ROXOBEL HISTORIC HOMES ST. MARK'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH OAKLANA c. 1827 This 2-story, central-passage house with real ell takes a form typical of the region. Planter PERRY COTTEN TYLER built the house soon after he purchased the property in 1825, replacing a house erected in the mid 18th c.A large smokehouse of dovetailed planks and a small dairy survive. WOODBOURNE "Woodbourne" is near the Roanoke River in Roxobel, NC. The main body of "Woodbourne" was built in 1809 by Thomas Figuers NORFLEET and was a gift to his wife, Margaret Williams ANDREWS. The land on which Woodbourne was built was inherited by Margaret Williams Andrews from her grandfather, George Williams, and was a land grant to the Williams family. The two wings were added in 1811, that date being inscribed on the chimney of the east wing. The house is of the Federal style which was popular after the the American Revolution. A beautifully porportioned example of this archetecture is the "Simple House" in Williamsburg, VA. A much more grandiose example is "Homewood" in Baltimore, the home of Charles Carroll, "the signer's",son. Woodbourne contains some significant features such as the enclosed staircase, heart pine wainscoat and ornate ceiling plaster, (which has long since fallen). The layout is unusual in that the entrance hall is turned sideways rather than running from front to back. Woodbourne is owned and occupied by Thomas Figuers Norfleet, Jr., the great-great grandson of the builder. Molly Urquhart murquhar@bellsouth.net
