Thomas (2018) “Our debt to the heroic men and valiant women in the service of our country can never be repaid. They have earned our undying gratitude. America will never forget their sacrifices." President Harry S. Truman Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those individuals who have died in military service of the United States. Memorial Day was borne out of the Civil War and a desire to honor the country’s military dead. Gen. John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, officially proclaimed by his General Orders No. 11 (May 5, 1868) that “The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land.” The date of Decoration Day was chosen because it was not the anniversary of any particular battle during the Civil War.1 New York was the first state to officially recognize the holiday (1873). By 1890 the day of remembrance was recognized by all of the Northern states, but the South refused to acknowledge the day, honoring their Confederate dead on separate days. After World War I the holiday was changed from honoring just those who died in the service of the United States during the Civil War to honoring Americans who died in any war. Memorial Day is now observed in every state on the last Monday in May pursuant to the Uniform Monday Holiday Act of 1971 (Public Law 90 – 363).2 Throughout the history of the United States, Bertie County residents have served in the nation’s military forces during every war. Hundreds of Bertie County’s sons and daughters departed their beloved homes, leaving family and friends to risk their lives for the country. More than 265 service members from the county have died during wartime from the Revolutionary War (1775 – 1783) through the Iraq War (2003-2011). The following list includes the names of individuals who were killed in action, died of wounds received in combat, were last reported as missing in action and thereafter never accounted for by military authorities, died as prisoners of war, and died of non-battle causes. No county citizens have died during the current war in Afghanistan.3 Due to lost and destroyed records for certain conflicts and limitations in some extant records, unfortunately the compiled list does not contain the name of every Bertie County resident who died during wartime.
