REVOLUTIONARY WAR PENSION APPLICATION - John Hoggard File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives on Sept 1977 by Robbie Burnett rburnett@sheltonbbs.com State of North Carolina Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions County of Bertie began & held for the County aforesaid at the Court house in Windsor on the 2nd Monday of November in the year of our Lord 1833 On this 13 day of November in the year 1833 personally appeared before the Justices of the said Court now sitting for the County aforesaid in the State aforesaid, John Hoggard, a resident of the county and State aforesaid aged seventy three years, who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provision make by the act of Congress passed June 7th 1832. That he enlisted in the army of the United States in the month of July in the year 1778 with Capt. Redding Blount, and served in the 10th Regiment of the Continental line, under the following named officers viz: Col. Hogan, a field officer, Capt. Redding Blont and Lieutenant Reuben Wilkenson company officers: that he left the said service on or about the last of April 1779- that he resided in the County of Bertie and State aforesaid when he entered the service, that he was engaged in no battle- that he marched from the town of Windsor to the town of Halifax, North Carolina- that he encamped near the town of Halifax for a short time an was marched then to Petersburg in Virginia where he rendezvoused and was marched thence through the State of Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey to West Point in the State of New York. at which place he arrived sometime in the summer of 1778 and worked on the fort, kept guard and discharged military duty until the 9th of December 1778 when he was ordered to Trenton, New Jersey to which place he marched under the said Captain Redding Blount and then to winter quarters- and had the small pock which was amongst the Soldiers at that place. That about the first of April 1779 he was ordered to Halifax N. C. to which place he marched with the said Capt. Blount and where he arrived about the last of that month and was discharges by Major _______ whose name he does not recollect, Having served out the term for which he enlisted. The said John Hoggard further saith that he hereby relinquishes every claim whatsoever to a pension or annuity except the present and he declares that his name in not on the pension roll of any agency in any State. his John x Hoggard mark Sworn to & Subscribed before me in open court this 13 November 1833 Jon ___ Tayloe Clk State of North Carolina Bertie County Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions - November term 1833--- I, William Watford, residing in the County of Bertie N. C. do hereby certify that I an well aquatinted with John Hoggard, the individual who has subscribed and Sworn to the above declaration for a pension, that I believe him to be 73 years of Age as he has stated. I know of my own knowledge that the said John Hoggard was a soldier in the United Sates Army in the time of the revolutionary war- I served with the said John Hoggard for the term of nine months during that war, as a soldier- were enlisted at the same time, served the same length of time, and were discharged at the same time. He thinks the name of the said John Hoggard must have been entered on the muster Rolls- but that there may have been a mistake in entering it correctly. He never knew nor heard of any person, named John Hoggard in Bertie County nor elsewhere although such a name appears on the muster rolls. He thinks the ____ name was the identical John Hoggard the declarant. Sworn to and subscribed before me in open court this 13 Nov 1833 Jon __ Tayloe Clk William Watford State of North Carolina Court of Pleas & Quarter sessions Nov term 1822 Bertie County The aforenamed John Hoggard, the declarant, personally appeared in open court and being first duly sworn according to law answered the following interrogatories as herein stated. 1. Where and in What year were you born? Ans- I was born in Bertie County N. C. in or about the year 1761. 2. Have you any record of you age? Ans- I have not: my parent had no learning, and did not keep a family record. 3. Where were you living when called into the Service, where have you lived since the revolutionary war, and where do you now live?- Ans-I lived in Bertie county N. C. when called into the service and have lived in said County since that war and now live in said county. 4. How were you called into Service, were you drafted, did you volunteer, or were you a substitute? Ans- I enlisted for nine months and served under Lieutenant Wilkinson, Capt. Redding Blount and Col. Hogan for that time. We were called nine months Soldiers. We camped at West Point in the Sate of New York for most of the time we were in the service. In answer to the 5th interrogatory- I do not now remember the names of any regular officers who were with the troops where I served, other than those I have before mentioned, nor do I recollect the names of any continental or militia regiment except the one in which I served. The circumstance of my service so far as is deemed material I have before stated. I do not recollect any other thing of importance. 6. Did you ever receive a discharge form the Service: if so by whom was it given and what has become of it? Ans- I received a discharge but cannot remember the name of the officer who gave it-nor do I know what has become of it. I have no learning and did not know it would be of any service to me. I served out my time faithfully and no fault was found of me that I know of. My discharge cannot now be found. It has no doubt been lost or destroyed long ago. I served in the same company with William Watford of this County, and went through the same service that he did and for the same term of nine months we set out together & marched together to West Point, and returned together as private Soldiers ______. I am known in my neighborhood by the said William Watford, Henry White, a clergyman, Elijah Rayner, and many others who can testify to my veracity & their belief of my services as a Soldier of the revolution. his John x Hoggard mark Sworn & Subscribed in open court this 13 day of November 1833 Jon __ Tayloe Clk We, Henry White a clergyman, and Elijah Rayner, a Justice of the Peace, both residing in the county of Bertie N. C.; hereby certify that we are well acquainted with John Hoggard who has subscribed and sworn to the above declaration, that we believe him to be 73 ears of age, that he is respected and believed in the neighborhood where he resides to have been a soldier of the revolution, & that we concur in the opinion. And the said court further certifies that it appears to them that Henry White who has signed one of the preceding certificates is a clergyman resident in the County of Bertie N. C. and that Elijah Rayner and William Watford who have also signed certificates on thy paper are residents of the same county of Bertie and are all credible persons and that their statement is entitled to credit. Jon S. Tayloe clk The application of Mrs. Penelope Hoggard for a pension under the provision of the new act of Congress of 1838. Penelope Hoggard maketh oath that she is the widow of John Hoggard, a pensioner for Revolutionary service under the act of Congress of 1832 at the rate of thirty dollars per annum which will fully appear by reference to the pension act No. 23230 that he has been dead upwards of three years that she was married to him in the year 1784 that the nature his Revolutionary service was proved previous to his receiving a pension under the act of Congress of 1832. her Penelope x Hoggard mark State of N.
