Previously served as a Private in Company F, Fifty-ninth Regiment North Carolina Troops (Fourth Regiment North Carolina Cavalry) (Confederate), from which he deserted about November 1862. Enlisted in this company at Wingfield, Chowan County, NC, on February 12, 1863, at the age of 22. Present or accounted for until mustered out on June 27, 1865, at New Bern, NC. Castellow, Truston, Private: Transferred from Company B, Second Regiment North Carolina Union Volunteers on February 27, 1865. Present or accounted for until transferred to Company G of this regiment on March 17, 1865. Clark, William E., Private: Born in Bertie County where he resided prior to enlisting on August 13, 1862, at Wingfield, Chowan County, NC, at the age of 24. Present or accounted for until reported as absent without leave July 17, 1863, through December 17, 1863. Had received a furlough to his home in Bertie County from July 1, 1863, through July 16, 1863, but was unable to return to his company because of "geurillas" in the county. Obtained transportation to Plymouth, NC, in early December 1863, and was restored to duty on December 18, 1863, per the order of Major General John J. Peck. Thereafter, was present or accounted for until mustered out of service at New Bern, NC on June 27, 1865. Harrell, John B., Private: Born and resided in Bertie County where, according to his Federal pension record, he was conscripted into the Confederate States Army and placed in the Thirty-third Regiment North Carolina Troops only to desert within a few days. Records of that regiment show that a John Harrell was discharged from Company F prior to April 1, 1862; however, sufficient information is not available from Confederate records to determine if that John Harrell and John B. Harrell were the same person. Enlisted in this company at Wingfield, Chowan County, NC, on February 16, 1863. Present or accounted for until mustered out on June 27, 1865, at New Bern, NC. Harrell, Mathias, Private: Born in Bertie County and enlisted at Wingfield, Chowan County, NC, on October 17, 1862, at the age of 28. Received a furlough to go to his home "inside enemy lines" in January 1864. Reported as deserting on January 26, 1864, at Washington, NC. Returned to the regiment on July 26, 1864. Returned to duty on August 12, 1864, in accordance with Special Orders Number 157, Headquarters, District of North Carolina. Thereafter, present or accounted for until mustered out on June 27, 1865, at New Bern, NC. However, a Federal pension affidavit by his widow, Asenath Cullipher (remarried Augustus Cullipher), dated August 5, 1889, indicates that he died on or about September 15, 1864, while confined at Andersonville, Georgia. In a Federal pension deposition dated October 20, 1899, he stated that he was captured by the Confederates at Plymouth and taken to Weldon, NC, and subsequently to Salisbury, NC. He further stated that he remained a prisoner of war until the end of the war and never returned to his regiment. He eventually received a discharge from the War Department in 1892. However, Confederate military records show that he enlisted in Company F, Sixty-eighth Regiment North Carolina Troops (Confederate) on June 25, 1864. Affidavits made in 1900 by George W. Shaw and James W. Langdale, former members of Company F, indicate that Capps enlisted in their company while it was stationed at Salisbury as prison guards. However, he apparently died at Andersonville, Georgia, on September 9, 1864, for on that date Robert H. Kellogg noted in his diary that one "Magill" (apparently Mizell) of the Second Regiment North Carolina Union Volunteers died under the "assumed role of a Pennsylvanian." The Atwater list of prisoners who died at Andersonville shows that a "H. Magill" of the One Hundred and Third Regiment Pennsylvania Infantry died on September 11, 1864. There were no "H. Magills" in either the Pennsylvania or North Carolina regiments. Therefore, it is assumed that the individual who died on September 9, 1864, (or September 11), was "H. Mizell," i.e. Henry T. Mizell.
