Better known as Branson's Business Directory, this little known and used resource is another genealogical resource and it gives by county, such information as county officers, hotels and boarding houses, lawyers, ministers, physicians, merchants, mills, manufactories, post offices (and postmasters), schools, churches, farmers and teachers. Even some historical facts are given. The larger directory has interesting advertisements and an alphabetical listing for the entire state and includes such as physicians, dentists, lawyers, schools, confectioners, grocers, druggists, apothecaries, hotels, butchers, auctioneers, barbers, notaries, wine and liquor dealers, milliners, watchmakers and jewelers, boot and shoe stores, furniture dealers, livery stables, merchants, tobacconists, house and sign painters, and nurserymen. While we may find an old City Directory in an antiquarian or used bookstore, it is highly doubtful that we would find a Branson's Directory, except maybe in a library in their rare book room, special collections, or reference collection. The only surviving Branson Directories that I am aware of are for the years 1866-1867, 1867-1868, 1869, 1872, 1877-1878, 1884, 1890 and 1896. Directories for these years are in microfiche format. A set of 42 cost in the neighborhood of $400. Some libraries have them. (These directories were not under any copyright protection.) As with all sources, the information is only as accurate as the persons supplying the data and those who entered the information into print format. This is only a business directory; it is not a listing of all Bertie County residents. I feel certain that many names are missing as the publisher had to rely on each business person to submit data. ======================== USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, data may be freely used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
