Pages 139 and 140 Bertie County was formed in 1722, from Albemarle county (since abolished), and derives its name from James and John Bertie, who surrendered ther proprietary rights to the English in 1729. The county is situated at the head of Albemarle Sound, and on the north of Roanoke river. Windsor is the county-seat. It is 100 miles east of Raleigh, and has a population of 500. Surface-----Low and level; the soil is generally good, and quite productive when well drained. Staples-----Bertie is eminently adapted to the growth of cotton and corn---the great staples of the county. Sweet potatoes are also profitable. Shingles and staves are also exported in quantities. Fruits-----Apples, peaches, grapes, melons, &c. Timbers-----Pine, cypress, oak, juniper, gum, &c.
