Bunch, a member of the firm Bunch and Bridges, owners of a saw mill, attempted to step over the log carriage while the saw was in motion. His foot caught and he fell on the saw, which cut off his left arm, He was thus drawn against the saw, which cut his body completely in two across the chest before the machinery could be stopped. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ February 27, 1906 The Governor has refused to commute the death sentence of Jesse Mitchell, convicted of wife murder, and he will be hanged at Windsor, Bertie county, next Thursday. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ March 6, 1906 Bob Mitchell, colored, who killed his wife last June, and burned her body, was hanged at Windsor, Bertie county, Thursday, He made no statement on the scaffold, having previously admitted his guilt. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ August 21, 1890 The plague of Speaker Reed’s life during the present Congress has been Congressman Rogers of Arkansas, who has stood up in the House, time and time again, and denounced him for his tyranny and acts of usurpation as no speaker was ever denounced before in the history of the American Congress. One of his recent utterances - speaking of the attitude of the people of the Country toward Reed – was this: “May I tell you, Mr. Speaker, that they curse you, and despise you, and hate you, and when you are assailed in public they are silent.” Mr. Rogers is a native of Bertie county, N.C., and a first cousin of Mrs. J.T. Coke Dead – The Secretary of State Passes Away. Capt. Octavious Coke, Secretary of State, died at his home in Raleigh Friday afternoon of fever. He had been ill five weeks during nearly all of which time he was delirious. [Brief synopsis of a very elaborate tribute article: Born in Williamsburg, VA 1841 his father a wealthy planter there. Entered the Confederacy at the start of the Civil War fought gallantly attained the rank of Captain. Severely wounded at Sharpsburg. After the War became a lawyer located at Edenton NC where he married Miss Elizabeth Wood. In 1870, he was elected State Senator. In 1879, he married Miss. Kate Fisher of Raleigh, and made Raleigh his home. In 1880, he was elected Democratic State Chairman and thereafter was always a leading figure in State politics. ….. He was a brother of Senator Richard Coke, of Texas, J.A. Coke, prominent attorney of Richmond, Va., and Dr. C.L. Coke, of Bertie county, N.C., he leaves a widow, three sons, and three daughters. Capt. The younger beat the elder (nearly 60 years old) nearly to death with a gate latch. Wm. J. Mevens, a farmer, died near Windsor, Bertie county, a few days ago leaving an estate valued at $25,000. Winston, Seattle Wash., Attorney General of that State; Geo. T. Winston, former President State University, now president of the University of Texas; F.D. Winston of Bertie county; ex-Judge Winston of Durham, and Mrs. F.S.
