A remarkable marriage occurred near Lewiston in Bertie county a few days ago. About two years ago some young girls in that section saw an advertisement in a newspaper asking for correspondence with a young lady, looking to matrimony. A young girl named Eliza Drew, who could neither read nor write, jokingly said she believed she would answer it. Some of her friends said they would write for her, and so they did. Her answer to the advertisement was responded to by a quarter master in the United States army at Fort Richey, Kansas. A correspondence was then commenced, in which it is said 150 letters passed between them. The young girl wrote him full particulars. She told him she could neither read nor write, was not good-looking, had worked in the field all her life, weighed 220 pounds and wore a No. 8 shoe. Notwithstanding, he came a few days ago with plenty of money, well-dressed, good-looking, accomplished and weighed 120 pounds. He gave the young girl the money to dress herself up, remained a few days, planned and carried out a big wedding, married her and took her off to Washington on a bridal tour. His name is Gaultz. He will show her a little of the world, bring her back to see her parents, and then carry her to Kansas. We have the story as related from a responsible planter of Bertie. [Now don't all go crazy, girls. This story is interesting but there is most probably not a word or truth in it, though of course the Democrat is honest about it.] +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ The Weekly Standard Raleigh, NC March 14, 1860 MARRIED, At the residence of William K. Swaney, of Castallan Springs, in this county, a Masonic apron that is one hundred years old. It is made of Irish linen with the Masonic emblems nicely embroidered on it with silk. It was made in Bartee county, North Carolina, by Miss Mary Spivey, for Henry Belote, about which time there was a great prejudice among the ladies against Masonry, and this young lady and her mother were the only ladies who would make them any regalia. galia. Miss Mary Spivey was married July 10, 1774, to James Bate. She was the mother[of] Col. Humphrey Bate and the great-grand-mother of Gen. Wm. B. Bate. The date of her marriage fixed the time she made the apron, as it was before Henry Belot died, in 1827, and while on his deathbed he gave this apron to John L. Swaney, requesting him to keep it as long as he lived. It is as perfect as it was when it was first made. John L. Swaney is perhaps the oldest Mason living in Tennessee. He was initiated in to Lodge No. 6. at Gallatin, in 1808. There is no such county in North Carolina as "Bartee county." Probably Bertie is meant.
