Charlotte, N.C., January 3. - [Special.] - A very remarkable accident occurred night before last at Mount Olive, in Bertie county. A merchant named W.H. Baremore [?Bazemore?] was in his store and threw a lighted fire cracker at a cat. The cracker fell on a keg of powder. There was a terrible explosion, the roof of the store was lifted up to a considerable height and the sides were blown outward. The roof fell almost intact. Its weight rested partially upon the counter, and thus saved Mr. Baremore from being crushed to death instantly. As it is he has sustained injuries which are considered fatal. ============================= This file was contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives by Marianne Nichols Ordway mordway@adelphia.net NOTES: John Cowand The western most intersection of the road from Republican and highway 308 from Windsor to Lewiston is know as Mount Olive.
