The North Carolina Star July 7, 1841 (Raleigh, North Carolina)
State of North Carolina,
Bertie County, 
In Equity-- March 1841
  John Ruffin, 
     vs
Whitmel B. Ruffin, Blount B. Ruffin, the children of Henry Ruffin, viz:
Henry, Robert, Catharine, John and Starkey, and the children of Jas 
Ruffin, viz: Richard, William, Thomas and James Ruffin.
  Petition to Sell Land
In this case, it appearing to the satisfaction of the court that Blount
B. Ruffin, Thomas Ruffin, and Robert Ruffin are inhabitants of
other States, so that the ordinary process of law cannot be served
on them: It is therefore ordered by the Court, that publication be
made in the Raleigh Star for six weeks, notifying the said persons
to be and appear before this Court on the third Monday of 
September next, in the town of Windsor, then and there to plead,
answer or demur, or the petition will be heard exparte,
and judgement pro confesso will be entered as to them.
