Magbe TYNER - Marie J. Magbe, 96, of the 100 block of Wingfield Road, died April 2, 2004. Marie was born on October 16 1907 in Windsor. She grew up there and attended and graduated from Elizabeth City State Normal School in Elizabeth City in 1928, followed by a two-year teacher's training course. Shortly after her graduation, she became a teacher in Bertie County. She eventually migrated to New York City where she met and married the late George Magbe in 1931. There union of 48 years produced two daughters, Joyce and Althea. In 1955 she joined Metropolitan Baptist Church and became a member of the North Carolina Club. She was an active alumni member of the New York Chapter of the Elizabeth City State University. She is survived by her two daughters, grandsons, David and Douglas, granddaughter Cynthia, great granddaughters Caitlyn, Kiersten and Jacqueline, cousin Katherine and cousin Sally Bond, as well as a host of other cousins, and many dear friends, including Mary Hyatt. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, April 6, 2004 at Gilliam Funeral Home Chapel in Windsor with Kelly Bond officiating. RENA J. PERRY WINDSOR - Rena Jernigan Perry, 91, a native of Bertie County, died April 2, 2004 in Guardian Care Nursing Home, Ahoskie. She was the widow of Lloyd Caswell Perry. Mrs. Perry was born in Bertie County on May 16, 1912 to the late Wright Pipkin and Emmaliza Hughes Jernigan. She was homemaker and member of Askewville Assembly of God. A funeral was conducted Monday at Askewville Assembly of God by the Rev. R. O. Denton, Jr., and the Rev. R.O. Denton Sr. Burial was in Edgewood Cemetery. Walker Funeral Home was in charge. Survivors include two daughters, Lois P. Stewart of Madras, India and Daisy P. Hill of Windsor; six grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren. CLAMON BROWN POWEELSVILLE - Clamon Brown, 84, of the 100 block of NC 42 East, died April 3, 2004, at Roanoke Chowan Hospital. Mary Drake of Powellsville; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. BOBBY PERRY DAVIS SR. Bobby Perry Davis Sr, 75, died Monday, April 5, 2004 at his home. Mr. Davis was born in Bertie County, the son of the late A.H. and Hazel Perry Davis. He was a member of Hickory Chapel Free Will Baptist Church, a retired farmer and farm equipment salesman. Survivors include his wife Gertrude Dempsey Davis, a son Bobby Davis, Jr. and wife, Delores, of Rocky Mount, a daughter, Tommye Anne Kidd and grandson Landen Kidd of Raleigh. HOGGARD SR. COLERAIN - Mark Daniel Hoggard Sr., 67, passed away April 6, 2004, in Roanoke-Chowan Hospital. He was a native of Bertie County and the son of the late Charney E. and Odell Cowan Hoggard. He was the founder of the Laymen Quartet which sang southern gospel music for the past 32 years. He was also the owner of Mark Hoggard Logging and Farming. Survivors include his loving wife of 50 years, Mary Lou Wilson Hoggard; daughter, Deborah Tinkham and husband Tommy of Colerain; two sons, Michael Hoggard and wife Vicky of Merry Hill and Mark Hoggard Jr. and wife Amanda of Colerain; three sisters, Emily Jackson of Colerain; Ina Dunning of Windsor, and Beatrice Smithwick of Currituck; a brother, Charney Hoggard of Windsor; five grandchildren, Michelle Chappell and husband Rodney, Will Hoggard, Daniel Tinkham, Birana and Trey Hoggard. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Bethel Assembly of God Church, Askewville, NC by the Rev. R.O. Denton Jr., the Rev. R.O. Denton, Sr., the Rev. Roger Leggett and the Rev. Al Jarrell. WILMA JENKINS EVANS Wilma Jenkins Evans, 94, of Merry Hill, NC died on Wednesday, April 7, 2004 at the home of her daughter in Henderson, NC. A native of Bertie County, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Samuel and Katie Matthews Jenkins and the widow of the late James Claude Evans. Mrs. Evans was a member of the Capeharts Baptist Church where she was active in Sunday School and the W.M.U. Funeral services were held on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at the Captharts Baptist Church by the Rev. Robert White. She is survived by one daughter, Betsy E. Rublein and husband Walter of Henderson, one granddaughter, Melanie Dawn Rublein of Raleigh, and one grandson, John Claude Rublein of Durham. Arrangements were by the J. M. HOLLOMAN AULANDER - Elaine Felton Holloman, 74, of the 700 block of E Main St. went to be with the Lord, Saturday April 10, 2004. Mrs. Holloman was born in Gates County, NC, daughter of the late Joseph Benjamin and Maude Harrell Felton. She was the retired co-owner and secretary of Holloman Electric Company, Inc., and active member of Aulander Baptist Church and JOY (Just Old Youth) Club and a homemaker. Elaine is survived by two daughters, Patricia Godsey and June Siggins, both of Kingsport, NC and a son, Jerry Lee Holloman of Aulander, NC, and four grandchildren. ESSIE MAE PORTER AULANDER - Essie Mae Porter, 72, of Aulander, died April 13, 2004 at Three Rivers Nursing Home. She was born on January 3, 1932 in Hertford County. She was a homemaker and a member of Second Baptist Church Union. She is survived by her husband Arthur Porter, three daughters, Carolyn A. SHIRLEY BARKER GRANDY - Shirley Barker, 76, died April 13, 2004, in the Albermarle Hospital. He was born and raised in Colerain, NC and was the son of the late George W. Barker and Mable Felton Barker and the husband of Anne Catherine Harrell Barker of 57 years. He was a merchant Marine and served in the U.S. Navy. Besides his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Deborah A. Barker Wray of Grandy; a son, Danny Michael Barker and his wife Diane of Maple, NC; a sister, Jeanette Copeland of Virginia Beach; a brother George Felton Barker of North Port, FL; two grandchildren, Danny Michael Barker Jr. and Mary Catherine Dillard; and one great-granddaughter, Abagail Nicole Dillard. He was predeceased by one grandson, Christopher Jason Byrd. No funeral is planned at this time. ELSIE N. DESHIELDS NORFOLK - Elsie N. DeShields, 95, formerly of the 8000 block of Van Patten Road, went to be with the Lord April 15, 2004, in a local hospital. She had for the last five years been a resident of Thornton Hall Nursing Home. A native of Bertie County, NC, Mrs. DeShields worked with the Bakery and Candy Department of Sears and Roebuck and also a real estate agent with Ace Realty. She was the widow of Robert H. DeShields and a charter member of the Tidewater Central Church of the Nazarene. She is survived by her son, Irving L. DeShields and his wife Norma of Norfolk; two grandchildren, Sharon McDonald of Norfolk and Deborah Leverett of Hampton; two great-grandchildren, Matthew and Sara Leverette, both of Hampton; and several nieces and nephews in the area including Shirley Summerlin and Helen Barnes in Milton, Iowa and a nephew, the Rev. J.C. Summerlin of Minneapolis, Minn. She was predeceased by seven brothers and sisters. A funeral will be conducted Sunday at 2:30 p.m. in the Tidewater Central Church of the Nazarene, Parliament Drive, Virginia Beach with the Rev. William R. Dillon II, the Rev. Loren Gould and the Rev. Ron Wirth officiating. The burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. MIZELLE WINDSOR - Francis Willoughby "Buster" Mizelle, 67, died in Sterling, Va., April 19, 2004, following a courageous battle with emphysema. He was born Oct 2, 1936 in Askewville, NC to the late John Dewey and Emily Hoggard Mizelle. He is survived by his wife, Jo Carol; three daughters, Lori Hall, Krystal Collins and Renee Taylor; and a son, Doug Plamer. He is further survived by his first wife, Rachael White; a son, Oral Mizelle and two daughters, Frances "Frankie" Moore and Ruth Draper; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Grace Lewis of Roxboro, NC and Anne Mizelle of Chesapeake; two brothers, John "Junior" Mizelle of Locust, NC and Winston Mizelle of Chesapeake. Mrs. Robertson was born Dec. 6, 1923 in Suffolk, Va., the daughter of the late Julian C. Parker and Margaret Batts Parker. She was a member of Aulander Baptist Church and a homemaker. PHILLIP N. WATERS CARY - Phillip Nichlos "Nick" Waters, 60, died April 21, 2004 at his home. Nick was born in Bertie County Nov. 20, 1943, to the late Phillip and Mildred Gurganus Waters. He was the director of Orange County Emergency Management Services since 1989. Mr. Waters started his career as a deputy sheriff in Bertie County and then moved into civil defense. He wrote the first civil defense plans for Bertie County. He later became the fire marshal for Burke County and was promoted to director of Emergency Management Services there. In 1989, he took over management of Orange County EMS. Mr. Waters received statewide recognition in 1999 for implementing an innovative emergency medical service delivery model for Orange County. Nick served in the Army National Guard from 1965 to 1967. He is survived by a daughter, Gay W. Faella and her husband James of Windsor; a son, Phillip N. Waters Jr. and his wife Sharon of Windsor; three sisters, Peggy W. Bullock and her husband Edward of Kingsland, Texas, Jean W. Williamson and her husband Jeff of Washington, NC and Carolyn W. Craven and her husband Larry of Zebulon, NC; a brother Jesse Waters of Kitty Hawk; and three grandchildren, Logan Nichlos, James and Lindsey Faella. OUTLAW WINDSOR - Eva Elizabeth Outlaw, 77, of the 800 block of Cedar Landing Road, died April 22, 2004, at Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville. She was born on May 13, 1926 in Windsor, NC to the late Tulie Elizabeth Bond Eason. She was united in marriage to Elbert Leary Sr. in 1947. A daughter, Annie Rainey, preceded her in death. She leaves to cherish her memories two sons, Elbert Leary Jr. and David Leary of Philadelphia, PA, two step-children, Esther Harrell of Windsor and Roy Johnson of Philadelphia, six grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren and one great great grandchild, a brother figure in Robert Lee McClamy, a godchild, and an array of cousins and friends. WATSON PETERSBURG, VA - Lillian Whitfield Watson, 98, a native of Bertie County, died April 23, 2004 in Petersburg. A funeral was conducted at 12 noon Wednesday at Bland's Funeral Home, Petersburg. Burial will be in the Watson Cemetery, Aulander. Survivors include on daughter, Phardalis Watson Wiggins of Ahoskie; one son, Norman Watson of Hampton; 19 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren; 25 great-great-grandchildren; and four great-great-great-grandchildren. BASIL CASTELLOW Basil B. Castellow, 96, died Friday, April 23, 2004 in Southhampton Memorial Hospital's East Pavilion. Mr. Castellow was born August 15, 1907 in Bertie County, North Carolina, a son of the late Albert F. and Willie Frances Castellow. He graduated from Wake Forest College and for 40 years was a school teacher or principal. Most recently he was a principal in Conway, North Carolina and also in Franklin, Virginia. He was a member of the Franklin Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon and was particularly active as an usher. For many years he taught the Brunner Bible Class on fifth Sunday. He was also a member of the High Street Senior Citizens. Surviving are his wife of 69 years, Ruby Lee Castellow and a daughter Eunice and her husband Jesse Vick, of Courtland, VA; a sister, Betty Davidson of Newport News, VA, four grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, Willie T. Castellow. A funeral was held at 2 p.m. Sunday in Franklin Baptist Church with the Rev. James Hyatt and Rev. James W. Browder III officiating. High Street, Franklin, VA 23851 SARAH WHITE MIZELLE Sarah White Mizelle, 86, died Friday, April 23, 2004 at Three Rivers Nursing Home. Mizelle was born in Bertie County, NC of September 20, 1917 to the late Ed and Oakie White. She was predeceased by her husband, Joe Cephus Mizelle in 1963. Mizelle was a homemaker and a member of the Askewville Baptist Church. Funeral services were held on Sunday April 25, 2004 at Askewville Baptist Church. Survivors include her daughters Alease M. George of Chesapeake, VA and Earline M. Pineada of Walstonburg, NC, sons Eddie R. Mizelle and Robert W. Mizelle both of Chesapeake, ten grandchildren, and fourteen great-grandchildren. The family received friends on Saturday at Walker Funeral Home and at other times from Mizelle's home. Walker Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. LOUISE SMITHWICK TAYLOR Louise Smithwick Taylor, 94, died April 23, 2004 at Martin General Hospital. She was a retired homemaker and a member of Memorial Baptist Church. She was married to the late Hugh Hobson Taylor on November 28. 1939. Mrs. Taylor was born in Bertie County to the late William M. and Sue Britt Smithwick. She is survived by a daughter Winifred Griffin of Williamston, Gayle Roberson of Williamston, Judy Gardner of Jamesville; a brother, J. Britt Smithwick of Merry Hill; a sister Sue Davis White of Colerain; eight grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, one step-great-grandchild; and one step great-great-grandchild REWIE J. MIZELLE WARRENTON - Rewie Junior Mizelle, 78, died April 24, 2004. A graveside service will be held today at 2 p.m. in Mizelle Family Cemetery. Walker Funeral Home, Windsor, is in charge. HOLLEY NORFOLK VA - Alsavion McKinley Holley, infant son of Genika Askew of Ahoskie and Nicholas Holley of Colerain, died April 24, 2004, at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. MYRTLE E. JONES CHESAPEAKE - Myrtle Eva Jones, 92, of the 200 block of Mann Drive, went to be with the Lord April 25, 2004. A native of Bertie County, NC, she was the daughter of the late Charlie b. and Eva Lawrence Speller and was the wife of the late Willie Ray Jones. She was a member of Bible Baptist Church, Chesapeake, the Chesapeake First Senior Citizens Club and was involved with Meals on Wheels. She supported many active missionaries through Bible Baptist Church and Tabernacle Church of Norfolk and was a vibrant part of the quilting ministry of Tabernacle Church. She is survived by two sons and their wives, Charles R. "Charlie" Jones and Betty of Norfolk and Gerald W. Jones and Linda of Virginia Beach; for grandchildren, Charles "Wes" Jones and wife Kathy of Norfolk, Jennifer Jones and Justin Jones of Virginia Beach and Jan Jones of Florida; a brother, Leslie Speller of Williamston, NC and a special friend, Joan Lawson. A funeral will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. in Graham Funeral Home, Greenbrier Chapel, 1112 Kempsville Road, Chesapeake, with the Rev. Henry Johnson and Pastor Ray Bagi officiating. AUSTIN CHESAPEAKE VA - Anita Arnette Austin, a native of Bertie County, died April 28, 2004, at Chesapeake General Hospital. A funeral was conducted Sunday at Mt. WILLIAM C. COOPER PLYMOUTH - William C. Cooper, 80, native of Bertie County, died April 28, 2004, at his home. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Luke Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Cooper Family Cemetery. A wake will be held from 6-7 p.m. Tuesday at Gilliam Funeral Home. Cooper attended Bertie Schools and was a member of St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church. JESSICA LYNN HENRY Jessica Lynn Henry, 18, died Wednesday, April 28, 2004. Miss Henry was born in Hertford County on August 8, 1985 to Lynn and Rose Johnson Henry. She was a student at Bertie High School and a member of Ross Baptist Church. Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 1, 20043 at Ross Baptist Church by the Rev. Roger Kiker. Miss Henry was cremated following the service. Survivors include her parents, Lynn and Rose Henry of Windsor, NC, her brother Christopher Henry of Greenville, NC, and her maternal grandmother Elsie Johnson of Windsor, NC. ELLA WINBORNE MYRICK Ella Winborne Myrick, 67, of Aulander, NC, died on April 29, 2004 at Pitt Memorial Hospital. She was born on February 4, 1937 in Hertford County. She was a member of Conoconary Baptist Church where she served as an usher. She was retired from Bertie County Schools. She is survived by her children, Arnita Maxine Myrick, Melvin Myrick and Fred Myrick all of Aulander and Michael Myrick of Henderson, NC, three grandchildren, one brother, Thomas Winborne of Washington, DC; three sisters, Hattie Winborne, Mattie Riddick and Georgia Mae Sawyer of Portsmouth, VA. Funeral services were held at Conoconary Baptist Church on Sunday, May 2, 2004 at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Robert Horton officiating.
