The funeral service will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Immanuel Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Winterville Cemetery. Mrs. Mizelle, a native of Bertie County, was a graduate of Windsor High School. She had been a resident of Greenville since 1963. While her family was the highlight of her life, she had worked at Ronald McDonald House and was an avid volunteer at Pitt County Memorial Hospital. She was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church where she worked with the College Student Class, served as Library Director, church pianist and in other capacities. She was preceded in death by her parents, Hayes and Ellen Williford Dempsey. She is survived by her husband of 43 years, Cecil S. Mizelle, daughter, Janet M. Dohm and husband, Jason, of Raleigh, son Alan Mizelle and wife, Tanya, of Greenville, and seven grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Wilkerson Funeral Home. BRIDGETT PHILADELPHIA - Mamie Spivey Bridgett, 87, of the 100 block of Ghent St., died April 5, 2006 at Mercy Hospital in Philadelphia. A funeral will be Thursday, April 13, 2006 at 11 a.m. in St. Elmo Baptist Church, Windsor, NC. Visitation will be held Wednesday, April 12, 2006 from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Gilliam Funeral Home of Windsor, NC. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery in Windsor. ALTON BELL Alton Bell, son of the late King David Bell and the late Claudia Smallwood Bell, was born on March 20, 1918 in Bertie County. He departed this life on April 5, 2006 at 10:22 p.m. at Bertie Memorial Hospital. He was a resident of the Three Rivers Health and Rehabilitation Center in Windsor, NC. He attended the schools of Bertie County and joined the St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church at an early age, where he remained a faithful member. He was married to the late Elizabeth Mann Bell, who preceded him in death, along with his daughter, Thelma Mann, two sisters, two half sisters and seven brothers. He leaves to cherish his memory his six children, Mary Cooper and Peggy Bell, both of Windsor, Marie Askew, Clara Bell, and Rosella Grant, all of Brooklyn, NY, and John Mann of Manhatten, NY, two sisters, Carrie Riddick of New York and Louise Heckstall of Windsor, two brothers, Richard Bell of New York and John Bell of Windsor, seven sisters-in-law, three brothers-in-law, and a host of grandchildren, great- grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church on Monday, April 10, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Roy Sharpe officiating. Burial followed in Hillcrest Cemetery. ASKEW COLERAIN - Felica Anne Askew, 30, of the 300 block of Dilday Road, died April 6, 2006 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie. She was a member of Greater Wynn’s Grove Baptist Church, Colerain. Survivors include three daughters, Porsha Jenkins, Mercedez Askew and Alexis Askew all of Colerain; her father, Bryant Askew II of Powellsville; two brothers, Bryant Askew III of Colerain and Christopher Jefferson of Suffolk, Va.; and five sisters, Keisha Jefferson, Nicole Askew, and Angela White, all of Suffolk, Va., Doneisha Langford and Bryanna Askew, both of Ahoskie. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Today (Apr 11) in Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church by Rev. Nathaniel Thompson. Burial will be in Newsome Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. Hunter’s Funeral Home, Ahoskie, is in charge. WILLIA B. HUNT WINDSOR - Willia B. Hunt, 97, died April 6, 2006 at Plumblee Nursing Home, Plymouth. A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Wednesday at Cedar Landing Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery. Cherry’s Funeral Home, Windsor, is in charge. She was a retired school teacher. CPL SHAWN R. CREIGHTON COLERAIN - Shawn Ross Creighton, 21, was killed April 8, 2006 while on active duty with the U.S. Army in Iraq. Cpl Creighton was an honors graduate of Bertie High School and a leader of the school’s ROTC program. He was promoted to Corporal two days prior to his death. He is survived by his mother, Donna Drew Ward; father, Michael Creighton, Jr., grandmother, Nancy Drew; and great- grandmother, Mabel Jernigan. A funeral service with full military honors will be conducted Friday, April 21, 2006 at Bertie High School in Windsor at 3 p.m. Burial with military honors will follow at Edgewood Cemetery in Windsor. The family will receive friends Thursday, April 20, 2006, 7-9 p.m. at Massey Funeral Home, Aulander. MYRTLE B. WARD WINDSOR - Myrtle B. Ward, 91, a native of Bertie County died April 9, 2006 at Rivers Edge Nursing Home, Windsor. She was the widow of William Clifton Ward. Mrs. Ward was born in Bertie County on January 19, 1915 to the late Clem and Bettie Hewitt Bazemore. A graveside service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in Edgewood Cemetery, Windsor, by the Rev. Harvey Jackson. The family will receive friends at Walker Funeral Home from 7- 8:30 p.m. Memorial gifts may be given to Community Home Care and Hospice or a charity of your choice. Walker Funeral Home is in charge. Mrs. Ward worked for Blue Bell as a seamstress and was a member of Republican Baptist Church. Survivors include one son, Steve Ward of Raleigh; one daughter, Bettie Dunn of Kinston; one sister, Margaret Truitt of Portsmouth, Va., four grandchildren; and four great- grandchildren. MAMIE SPIVEY BRIDGETT Mamie Spivey Bridgett was born August 2, 1918 to the late Mamie and Lenwood Spivey in Windsor, NC. She was united in marriage to the late James E. Bridgett. She spent most of her adult life in Philadelphia, Pa., where she was a long time member of National Temple Baptist Church. She served on the Usher Board, Women’s Auxiliary Committee and the Missionary Circle. She was preceded in death by her siblings Doris Spivey, Christine Veal, Alice Bryant, Emily Jones, and Lenwood Spivey Jr., left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Eleanor White of Windsor; eight grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at St. Elmo Missionary Baptist Church in Windsor on Thursday, April 13, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Hoyt Cooper officiating. BETTY SCOTT AULANDER - Mrs. Betty Lou Harrell Scott, age 68, of Aulander, NC, died April 10, 2006 at Pitt Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Scott was born May 22, 1937 in Bertie County, NC. She was the daughter of the late Era Hall Harrell and Willie W. Harrell. She was a retired machine operator in the textile industry. She is survived by her husband, Joe Scott, Jr. of the home; daughters, Catherine Outlaw and husband, Scott of Aulander; JoAnn Lee and husband, Leslie of Aulander, Emma Theodorakis and husband, Jimmy of Clayton; sons, Jonathan Scott and wife, Pam of Roxobel, Randy Scott and financee, Rhonda of Francis Mill; a sister, Carol Bland of Roanoke Rapids; brothers, Morrison Harrell of Roanoke Rapids and Rueben Harrell of Portsmouth, Va.; grandchildren, Gary and wife, Bridgette, Michele, Nicholas and wife Mandy, Page, Ashley, Amanda, Victoria and Logan; and great-grandchildren, Megan, Andrew, Aaron and Brent. Holley, 23, died April 16, 2006 at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Saint Luke Holiness Church, Jack Branch Road, Lewiston. WHITE AHOSKIE - Robert Lawrence White, 62, of the 300 block of Vann Road, died April 17, 2006. He was a native of Hertford County, had retired from NCDOT Road Oil Department, a member of Creech Memorial Baptist Church, had served in the N.C. National Guard, and was the son of the late Ernest and Elsie Janice Peele White, both of Bertie County. He was also predeceased by a sister, Ada White Fornes. Surviving are his wife, Peggy Jean Askew White; one daughter, Rena Parker and her husband, Chris of Ahoskie, NC, one sister Gayle Moore of Scotland Neck, NC; two grandchildren, Shane Parker and Katie Grace Parker. A funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, April 21, 2006 at Garrett Funeral Home with the Rev. Lester Jarrett officiating, burial will follow in Ahoskie Cemetery. Mrs. Lee was born in Bertie County and was a member of Mars Hill Baptist Church. She was a homemaker. Survivors include her husband, Ernest D. Lee, Jr.; a daughter, Sheila C. Brinkley of Ahoskie; a brother, Donald Newbern and his wife, Earline of Conway, NC; a granddaughter, Amy Brinkley; a grandson, Paul Cherry and his fiancé, Crystal Simmons; a great granddaughter, Kaylie Simmons; and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 21, 2006 in Highland Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Tom Sees officiating. ALLEN CHESAPEAKE - Myrtle Revie Allen, 70, passed away April 20, 2006. She was born in Colerain, NC to the late Daniel White and Martha Phelps Williamson. Mrs. Allen was predeceased by her husband, Marshall Matthews Allen Sr. Left to cherish her memory are daughters, Debbie Sawyer of Knotts Landing, NC and Vivian Williams of Suffolk; sons, Marshall M. ROSETTA WARREN LEE Rosetta Warren Lee, 48, of Windsor, NC died on April 21, 2006 at her residence. She was born on October 18, 1957 in Bertie County. She was a member of Mt. Herman Baptist Church of Aulander. She was employed with Lea Lumber Company of Windsor. She is survived by her husband Charlie Lee, her daughters, Charlene Lee of Greenville and Monta Bunch of Colerain, her son Tyrone Warren of Greenville, her grandmother, Georgia Henderick of Aulander, her sisters Rosa Mae Bazemore of Lewiston, Patricia Hathaway and Willie Mae Perry of Windsor. Her brothers Henry Warren, William Warren, Pete Warren, Simon Warren and Alexander Cherry, all of Aulander, and her grandchildren Shykira Bunch, Shamara Bunch, and Janiah Warren. She was preceded in death by her parents Thomas and Rosa Warren and her sister Emma Warren. Funeral services will be held at Mt. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., of Aulander was in charge of the arrangements. GEORGE ANDREW HOGGARD George "Andy" Andrew Hoggard, 50, died Sunday, April 23, 2006 at his sister’s home in Plymouth. Andy was born in Bertie County on November 27, 1955 to the late Meredith Pritchard and Mary Hardison Hoggard. He was a lawn care contractor and attended the Carpenter Shop Church. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 26, 2006 at the Carpenter Shop in Ahoskie by the Rev. Wallace Phillips. Burial will follow in Edgewood Cemetery, Windsor. Survivors include daughter Tracy Ward of Ahoskie, sisters Stella Miller of Plymouth, Belinda LeFever of Pantego, NC, and Lucia Robertson of Williamston, brother, Meredith "Toby" Hoggard, Jr. of Clarendon, NC and two grandchildren. Memorial gifts may be made to University Hospital Hospice, PO Box 272, Ahoskie, NC 27910. MARIAN B. JOYNER AULANDER - Marian Bodiford Joyner, 76, of NC Highway 561, died April 29, 2006. Arrangements are incomplete at Garrett Funeral Home. ALMA GRAY ALLEN Alma Gray Allen was born to the late George and Marthena Gray on October 25, 1913 in Windsor. She was one of eight children born of this union and is the last of the siblings to be called upon. On April 29, 2006, Alma peacefully slipped away from this life at her home in Windsor. Alma received her formal education in North Carolina. On February 23, 1932, she married Ernest Owen Allen in Williamston. They moved north and settled in Philadelphia, Pa. Alma worked in the garment industry for many years while attending evening classes at Drexel University and the University of Pennsylvania. She achieved her desire to be a school teacher by receiving her degree from Cheyney University and going to work in the Philadelphia Public School System for more than 20 years until she retired. Alma joined and was an active member of the Mount Olivet Tabernacle Baptist Church in Philadelphia until she and Ernest returned to Windsor. She became a member of Indian Woods Baptist Church. She was a devoted mother to her only son and a wonderful grandmother as well. She was successful as an educator who gave a great deal of herself to her students. Alma was an avid reader and enjoyed traveling. She was a lifetime member of the NAACP. She leaves to cherish her memory he son, Ernest O. Allen Jr., and his wife Ruth, granddaughter, Michelle Allen, sisters-in- law, Cora Smallwood, Josephine Allen, Hazel Smallwood, and Lillian Gray, along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at Indian Woods Baptist Church on Friday, May 5, 2006 at 11 p.m. with Rev. Ralph D. White officiating. Burial followed in Hillcrest Cemetery in Windsor. RUBY CLARK CONNER FUTRELL Ruby Clark Conner Futrell, age 90 died peacefully at the Ahoskie House in Ahoskie on Sunday, April 30, 2006. Mrs. Futrell was a native of Bertie County. She was married to the late Carlton "Buddy" Conner in 1936. She was a member of the Kelford Baptist Church and a member of the WMU for a number of years. Mrs. Futrell also served on the Parents Teacher Organization. Following the death of Mr. Conner she later was married to the late Isaac Futrell. Mrs. Futrell worked for many years as a private duty caregiver lending aid to many people. Also preceding her in death are her mother, Lizzie Parker Clark, her father, Jamie Clark and her brother, Jay Clark. Survivors include her daughter, Carolyn Askew and her husband Arthur of Ahoskie, one son, James C. Connor of Rocky Mount, one sister, Tula C. Brigman of Enfield and a sister-in-law Allie V. Clark of Lewiston. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Scott and Chris Connor, Pam Askew, Victoria Schaefer and Arthur Askew, Jr. and three great-grandchildren, Zachary and Justin Connor and Arthur Luke Askew and two nieces, Linda Minton and Sadie Blackmon. Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. at the Roxobel-Kelford Cemetery in Roxobel on Tuesday, May 2, 2006 with the Rev. Tommy Kiker and Rev. Henry Boschen officiating.
