He was born on October 19, 1922 in Bertie County. He was a retired custodian for Carolina Aluminum and a member of Conoconary Baptist Church. Survivors include four sons, Melvin Dudley, Jr. of Queens, NY, Johnny Dudley of Newark, NJ, Richard Dudley of New York, NY and Donald Dudley of Neptune, NY, four daughters, Margaret Twine of Astoria, NY, Theresa Gaskins of East Almhurst, NY, and Diane Powell of the home, and Jacqueline Melissa Dudley, one brother, Roy Dudley of Brooklyn, NY, two sisters, Fannie Cherry of Ahoskie, NC and Mary Dudley of Windsor, NC, twenty-five grandchildren and twenty seven great grandchildren. A funeral service took place at Conoconary Missionary Baptist Church on Saturday, August 9, 2003 at noon with Rev. Robert Sessoms officiating. A burial took place at Mitchell/Cherry Family Cemetery. James Festral High, Jr., was born to the late James Festral High, Jr. was born to the late James Festral High Sir and Addie High on September 4, 1952 in Windsor, North Carolina. On July 31, 2002 the Lord called James to come home. As a young boy he loved to sing. He was also an artist who's paintings were prominently displayed throughout his home where he was raised in "Springfield". James received his education at Bertie High School and continued his education at Williamston Junior College. He became a Master Welder traveling the world from Virginia to Venezuela. James, who is affectionately know as "Junior" by his family and friends, often like telling stories of his many adventures abroad. He leaves to cherish him memory four children; Christopher High of Philadelphia, PA, Damien High of Brooklyn, NY and Joshua and Jaquetta of Aulander, NC, three grandchildren, Tyrick, Damian, Jr., and Tre'Quan; two sisters, Verta McMillian of Brooklyn, NY, and Mary Cherry of Bronx, NY, a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends who will miss him dearly. WINDSOR - Irvin Pierce Jenkins, Sr., 84, of the 25200 block of Knoxville Road, died August 1, 2003 at Obici Hospital. Born in Isle of Wright County, he was the son of the late Rufus Andrew Jenkins and Eula Pierce Jenkins. He was also predeceased by his sister, Katherine "Ideal" J. Cope and his brother, Robert Andrew Jenkins. He was a retired farmer and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Colosse Baptist Church where he was a former deacon and board of trustee member. He was also a member of the Purdie Masonic Lodge No. 170 and Windsor Ruritan Club. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Sarah Ballard Jenkins; daughter and son-in-law, Margaret J. and Ronald E. Worrell of Windsor; sons and daughters-in-law, Irvin P. Jenkins Jr. and Angela W. Jenkins and William B. Jenkins and Linda L. Jenkins, all of Windsor; and grandchildren, Melissa J. Davis, William Christopher Jenkins and Adam Thomas Jenkins. A funeral will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at Sidney F. Harrell Chapel of the Harrell and Hill Funeral Home by the Rev. Tim Webb and the Rev. Mark Habecker. PURVIS WINDSOR - Orlean Hill Purvis, 71, a native of Bertie County, of the 600 block of Grabtown Road, died August 01, 2003, at Pitt Memorial Hospital. A funeral will be held Wednesday at Saint Francis Missionary Baptist Church, Windsor at 1 p.m., by the Rev. Dennis M. Cherry. Visitation will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Cherry's Funeral Home. Purvis was a member of St Francis Missionary Baptist Church, Windsor. Survivors include her husband, Benjamin Pervis; three brothers, Cofield Hill and Woodrow Hill, both of Windsor and Charles Hill of New York City; and one sister, Millie Williams of Bronx, NY THELMA M. MOORE Thelma M. Moore, 86, of Colerain, NC died August 1, 2003 at Brian Center Nursing Home in Windsor, NC. She was born February 9, 1917 in Bertie County. She was a retired custodian at Guardian Care Nursing Home and a member of Wynn's Grove Baptist Church. Survivors include: one son, Willie Williford of Colerain, NC, one daughter, Villia Thorower of Washington, DC, eight grandchildren and a host of great grandchildren. MATTHEWS COLERAIN - Jesse Allen Matthews, 69, of the 600 block of Morris Ford Road, died August 4, 2003 in Roanoke Chowan Hospital. A native of Bertie County, N.C., he was a farmer and member of Wakelon Baptist Church, Wakelon, NC. Mr. Matthews was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served during the Korean Conflict. Survivors include his wife, Edna Morris Matthews; a daughter, Rhonda Barber of Chesapeake; a son, Jeff Matthews of Colerain; a sister, Mary Jane Ruegger of Raleigh, N.C.; two brothers, R.D. Matthews and Spencer Matthews, both of Ahoskie; and four grandchildren, Bianna Matthews, Candace Barber, Alex Barber and Justin Matthews. Conner, 84, died at Roanoke Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie on Friday, Aug. 8, 2003. Mrs. Conner was a native of Bertie County and made her home in Aulander. Preceding her in death is her husband, Mr. Billy Conner and two sisters, Leona Jones and Icie Odom. Survivors include her daughter, Noyka Joy Conner of Ahoskie, two sisters, Annie Faris of Ahoskie and Jessie Mae Jenkins of Scotland Neck. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. A funeral was held at First Full Gospel Church of Woodland on Sunday, August 10, 2003 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Lee Thompson officiating. SOUTHERN SHORES - Haywood Gilbert Bland Jr., 84, died Aug. 12, 2003 in Chesapeake General Hospital. A native of Bertie County, N.C., he was the son of the late Haywood G. and Elizabeth Roane Bland. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. Before retiring to Southern Shores, he lived in Virginia Beach and worked in the shipping business. He was a member of Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church and Duck Woods Country Club. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Louise Carter Bland; three sons, Gilbert Bland and wife Carolyn of Chesapeake, Douglas Bland and wife Deirdre of Winston-Salem, NC, and David Bland and wife Marianne of Red Lodge, Mont; and seven grandchildren. BERTHA HINES-WATKINS MARIETTA, GA - Bertha Hines-Watkins, 62, formerly of Newport News, VA., died August 14, 2003. Memorial services were held at 4:30 p.m. August 16 at The Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses on Bell's Ferry Road in Marietta by James Gay, Sr. A local memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at The Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses at 111 Brown's Lane, Yorktown, Va. Born in Bertie County, N.C., Mrs. Watkins was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses since 1970. She retired in 1999 as a dietician. She was formerly employed with Washington Hospital in Washington, D.C., Vanderbilt Hospital in Tennessee and DePaul Hospital in Norfolk. She was a very loving person, loved to travel and always had an encouraging word to say. Survivors include her husband, John R. Watkins of Newport News; daughters, Belinda Pirtle of Washington, D.C., Brenda Rembert of Maryland, Sharon Owens, Cynthia Owens and Jennifer Hines, all of Marietta; father, John Willis Powell of Lewiston, N.C.; brother, Otis Powell of Chesapeake; and six grandchildren. Monterey Drive, departed this life August 15, 2003. A native of Windsor, North Carolina, he was employed with Colonial Chevrolet and other dealerships for more than 30 years until his retirement. He was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church where he was the president of noon day prayer. Also, he was past worshipful master, Cabella Lodge in Brooklyn, NY. He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Bobbi H. Williams of Chesapeake; three sons, Willie R. Williams II and his fiancée Denise Elliott of Virginia Beach, Timothy N. BESSIE RASCOE THOMPSON Bessie Rascoe Thompson, 73, of 1712 Indian Woods Road, Windsor, NC died suddenly Saturday, August 16, 2003 at Bertie Memorial Hospital in Windsor, NC. She was born to the late Josephus Rascoe and Jannie Walton in the Indianwoods-Springhill Baptist Church. She was married to Jeff D. Thompson, Sr. in 1953. Ms. Bessie was preceded in death by her sister, Lendora Rascoe; her brother, Benjamin Rascoe, Sr. and George Rascoe. Survivors include one daughter, Blanche T. White of the home, two sons, Jeff (Diana) Thompson of Indianapolis, IN and Jackson (Elnora) Thompson of Lewiston, NC, six grandchildren, one great grandchild, two brothers, Joseph Rascoe and Oscar Rascoe both of Windsor, NC, a host of nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. GRISSOM WINDSOR - Mabel Carroll Grissom, 89, died Aug. 17, 2003, in Windsor. Born Feb. 26, 1914, in Warrenton, NC, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Alberta Carroll and widow of the Rev. William Alphonso Grissom. Mrs. Grissom was a member of Liberty Spring Christian Church. She was very active in the churches that her husband served over the years including Liberty Spring Christian Church, Windsor Christian Church, and Isle of Wright Christian Church. Mr Sidney Stevenson Baggett Sr., 73, of 925 W. Main Street, Williamston, NC died after a long illness Sunday, 17 August 2003, at Martin General Hospital. Mr. Baggett was born December 4, 1929, in Bertie County to the late James A. and Sallie White Baggett. Mr. Baggett was a member of the First United Methodist Church and a retired electrician. He played steel guitar with many groups in and around Williamston, with the last being the "Oldest and Boldest." ROSA THOMPSON WILLIAMS WINDSOR - Rosa Williams, 84, of the 100 block of Cypress Lane, died August 18, 2003 in the Bertie Memorial Hospital, Windsor, North Carolina. She was born on October 16, 1918 to the late David and Maggie Ruffin Thompson. A funeral will be Sunday at 3 p.m. in Springhill Baptist Church, Lewiston. She attended the public school in Bertie County and worked at Hamilton Beach and Gilliam Brothers Peanut until her illness. She joined Spring Hill Baptist Church in Lewiston, NC at an early age and attended faithfully as long as she could. In 1936 she was untied in Holy Matrimony to the late King Soloman Williams. To this union nine girls andeight boys were born. He was born in Bertie County on October 26, 1939 to the late Tommy L. and Annie White Mizelle and was preceded in death by a daughter, Donna Kay Mizelle. Mr Mizelle was a farmer and a member of Askewville Assembly of God Church. A funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, August 24, 2003 at Askewville Assembly of God Church by the Rev. R.O. A native of Bertie County, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Charney and Emily Cowan Hoggard and the widow of Lloyd M. Bell and Alton G. Conner. Mrs. Conner was a member of the Living Waters Church of God, Chesapeake, an Avon representative for 35 years and an employee of Dixie Farms for 15 years. She was also a mail clerk with CBN for four years. A special mother, grandmother and sister to her family, she is survived by a daughter, Annie B. Beck and her husband, George; a son, Lloyd E. Bell and his wife, Claudia, all of Chesapeake; two grandsons, Mark T. Beck and his wife, Heidi, of Souderton, PA., and Matthew D. Beck of Chesapeake; three sisters, Emily Jackson of Colerain, N.C., Beatrice Smithwick of Currituck, N.C., and Ina Dunning of Windsor, N.C.; two brothers, Mark Hoggard of Colerain and Charney Hoggard of Windsor. AULANDER - George Clinton Hendricks Sr. died August 22, 2003 at his residence. He was born May 2, 1935 in Bertie County. He did maintenance and was disabled. Mr. Hencricks was a member of Mt. Herman Baptist Church. Survivors include his mother, Georgia Cherry Hendricks of Aulander, NC, one son David Hendricks of Aulander, NC. Survivors include one son, Macon Pierce of Greenville, two grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Mrs. Pierce was born in Bertie County on September 27, 1917 to the late Edward and Roxie Evans and was preceded in death by her husband, Claude M. Pierce. Mrs. Pierce was a homemaker and a member of Cashie Baptist church. A native of Colerain, N.C., he was employed with the Norfolk public school system until his retirement. He was a 1978 graduate of Norfolk State University. He is survived by his wife, Nancy C. Holley; three sons, Michael Holley of Maryland, Daniel Holley and Angelo Holley (Paulette), all of Chesapeake; an aunt, Lillian Ricks' seven grandchildren; several great grandchildren; and a host of other friends and relatives. THOMAS JEFFERSON MORRIS Thomas Jefferson Morris, recently of Wilmington, NC, formerly a long time resident of Greenville and Pine Knoll Shores, died Thursday, August 28, 2003. He was born August 22, 1912 in Colerain, NC to Charlie Morris and Mattie Baker Morris. He graduated from N.C. State University in 1932 and served in the Pacific during WWII. After the war, Mr. Morris returned to Greenville and established General Heating and Air Conditioning, Inc., which he operated for 37 years. Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Marjorie Whitehurst Morris, his son, Bernard J. Morris and his wife, Noell of Wilmington; his daughter, Jane Morris Hines and her husband, Mac of Rocky Mount; five grandchildren, Bernard J. HOLDER WINDSOR - Ruby Smith Holder, 91, of US 13 North, died August 30, 2003 at Tandem Health Care, Norfolk. She was born September 1, 1911 in Bertie County, NC to the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Smith and was predeceased by three daughters, Rebecca Holder, Esther H. Burleson and Janet Swain. Mrs Holder was retired from the ASCS office in Bertie County and a member of Cashie Baptist Church. Survivors include a daughter, Frances H. Bell of Norfolk; grandchildren, William F.
