She departed this life on August 1, 2006. She was the daughter of the late James Holley Jr. and Ernestine Outlaw Holley. She leaves to cherish her memories a son, Patrick Outlaw of Merry Hill, a grandson, Jaqwan Outlaw, two sisters, Linda Holley and Jonnie Mae Holley, both of Merry Hill, two brothers, Bernard Holley and Curtis Holley, both of Merry Hill, seven aunts, eight uncles, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his brother Bernard Holley and his stepfather Ernest Harrell. Funeral services were held at Peterson Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Merry Hill on Saturday, August 5, 2006 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Percell Whitaker officiating. BARBARA KEYS MIZELLE Barbara Keys Mizelle, 54, of Ahoskie died on August 5, 2006 in Nash General Hospital in Rocky Mount. She was born on March 31, 1952 in Bertie County. She was a poultry grader at Perdue, Inc., in Lewiston. She was a member of Luella Baptist Church in Kelford where she served as a member of the hospitality committee and senior choir. She is survived by her husband James Mizelle of Ahoskie, her mother Thelma Keys of Kelford, her daughters, Beverly Lee of Newark, NJ and Katina Mizelle of Paterson, NJ, her son, Tony Wilkins of Lewiston, her brothers, James Keys of Newark and Roger Keys of Lewiston, her sisters, Connie Garvin of Maryland, and Jennifer Hill and Margaret Keys-Jones both of Lewiston, and her grandchildren, Carnell Lee Jr. (CJ) and Tydeke Powell. Funeral services will be held at Luella Baptist Church in Kelford on Saturday, August 12, 2006 at 1 p.m. with Rev. Vernon Lassiter officiating. BRAT POWELL WINTON - Brat Cleveland Powell, 79, a native of Bertie County, died August 6, 2006 at his residence. A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday at New Beginnings in Murfreesboro by Chief Apostle Bishop Percy Cook Skinner. Burial will be in Carver’s Park Cemetery, Murfreesboro. MARAVENE TAYLOR Maravene Taylor, 89, of Merry Hill died Tuesday August 8, 2006 in Chowan Hospital. Mrs. Taylor was the daughter of the late Eure Phelps and John Cleveland Miler and the wife of the late Raleigh Sam Taylor. Survivors of Mrs. Taylor are her two sons; Johnny Taylor of Yorktown, Va and Larry Taylor of Merry Hill. She is also survived by her four grandchildren; Kelley, Curtis, Laurel and Laney. A celebration of Mrs. Taylor’s life was held at 11 a.m. Thursday, August 10, 2006 in the Capehart’s Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Bruce Dayton officiating. NELLIE RASCOE BRONX, NY - Nellie Gray Rascoe, 73, a native of Bertie County, died August 12, 2006 at Montfiore Medical Center, Bronx. She was born June 12, 1933 to the late Emma an Frank Rascoe. She was the third of seven children. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sim Rascoe and son, Sim Rascoe, Jr. Nellie grew up in Windsor, where she attended and graduated from Bertie County High School. She accepted Christ at an early age and joined Indian Woods Baptist Church. She later met and married her soul mate, the late Sim Rascoe n July 5, 1952. They relocated to New York City where she was a full time mother and loving wife. Nellie was a quiet yet outspoken woman. Her smile warmed the entire room. She had a generous heart and an adoring spirit. She truly cherished her husband and her children. She leaves to cherish her memories five daughters, Berice, Deborah, Angela Smalls, Patrina, Yvetter Monroe, and one son, Larry; two sisters, Janie Hyman, Mable Spivey, one brother, Frank Rascoe Jr., four grandchildren, four great- grandchildren, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other family members who will dearly miss her. JAMES BAZEMORE JAMAICA NY - James Earl Bazemore, 63, a native of Bertie County, died August 17, 2006 in Augusta, Ga. He was born on July 7, 1943 in Bertie County to the late Benjamin Bazemore Sr. and Georgia Bazemore. At an early age he joined the Mt. Olive Baptist Church. He attended John B. Bond School in Lewiston. During his young adult life, he moved to New York, where he lived for over 40 years. He shared 19 loving years with Emma L. Miles. To this union one child was born, Dena Miles. Her parents Joe and Willie (Thrower) Cherry along with her brother, Frank, predeceased her. She was born in Windsor, NC on Aug 3, 1953 Mrs Barnes was a registered nurse. Survivors include her husband, William "Pee Wee" Barnes; a son, Kieran "Andy" Barnes of Virginia Beach; a stepson, Shannon Chapman of Portsmouth; a stepdaughter, Donna Greer of Norfolk; a sister Lettie Riddick of Chesapeake; and five grandchildren. NAOMI PINDER WINDSOR - Naomi Pinder, 99, of the 1200 block of Cooper Hill Road, Windsor, died August 19, 2006 at the Brian Center. Naomi Pinder was born the third of seven children to William Martin Cooper and Nancy Reid Cooper in Windsor, March 10, 1907. She was preceded in death by her parents, five siblings, Ulysses, Ruth, Willie B., Miles, and James and husband Conrad. She was educated in Winton Schools In her early twenties she relocated to New York to live. There she met the love of her life Conrad Pinder. One of her many joys in her marriage was preparing the delicious Caribbean dishes for her husband and extended family. Naomi retired after many successful years as a seamstress. She was known for her beautiful workmanship and the attention to detail she gave to her sewing projects. After the death of her husband, she relocated back to Windsor. Cherishing her precious memory and gentle ways are one sister, Mrs. Annie M. Walston, of Windsor, a dear nephew with whom she lived. She was a homemaker and the widow of Herbert C. Turner. Survivors include her three daughters, Rachel H. Davis of Ahoskie, Juanita H. Dover of Williamston, and Gretchen H. Rodda of Winston-Salem; three sons, Jimmy White of Hallwood, Va., Ashley Harrell of Colerain, and "Drap" Harrell of Ahoskie; and two stepchildren, William H. Turner and Jo Marie Turner, both of Greensboro. She is also survived by three sisters, Susie Miller of Colerain, Myrtle Ward of Williamston, and Elizabeth White of Raleigh, a brother, Jessie White of Tarboro; sixteen grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. Pauline was predeceased by her first husband, Leroy Harrell and siblings, Hubert, Grace, Leonard, and Vernon. James was a longtime resident of Chesapeake and was retired from the Navy Supply Center after 36 years. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 55 years, Margaret C. She was preceded in death by her son, Haywood Craig, Jr. and Bryant Bond, who she had raised as her own. He furthered his education by attending Johnston Community College where he obtained a certificate in Practical Masonry Construction work. Mrs. Motley was a retired Extension Home Economics Agent who worked in Hertford County from 1944 until her retirement in 1976 with a specialization in 4-H clubs for youth and extension homemakers for adults. Prior to coming to extension she taught in the public school system of Fairmont, Roanoke Rapids and later at C. G. White School in Powellsville. She also served several religion and professional organizations including First Baptist Missionary Church Powellsville, the Women’s Auxiliary of the General Baptist Home and Foreign Missions, the American Home Economics Association, National Association of Extension Home Economics, NC Association of Extension 4-H Agents, Epsilon Sigma Phi, the Order of the Eastern Star, Bertie County Senior Citizens, and was on the board of the Atlantic District Fair. She is survived by one son, Columbus Eugene Motley Jr. of Wilmington. CATO L. WATSON JR. CHESAPEAKE VA - Cato L. "Snap" Watson Jr., 66, a native of Windsor, died August 25, 2006, in his brother’s home in Chesapeake. He was born in Windsor, NC to the late Cato L. Watson and Annie R. Gray Lundy. Watson completed his government service with the Department of Agriculture as a management analyst in Washington, DC. Survivors include his twin brothers, Albert and Allen Lundy; and one sister, Ruth Ann Carter. A funeral was conducted Monday in Celestial Baptist Church, Portsmouth, by the Rev. Leon J. Boone. Pugh, 77, of Windsor died August 26, 2006 at Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville. She was born August 26, 1929 to the late Mildred Smallwood Lee and Edmond Bond. She moved to Atlantic City, NJ in 1968. She was employed at the Senator Nursing Home as a Nursing Assistant until 1988 when she returned home to care for her sick father. She was united in marriage to Richard Pugh. A native of Colerain, NC, she was the widow of Roosevelt Miller and a self-employed beautician. She had been retired for 15 years after 60 years of service. She was a member of Mount Lebanon Baptist Church, Norfolk Registered Beautician Association and Chesapeake Garden Civic League, Norfolk. She was a graduate from I.C. Norcom High School, Portsmouth and graduated from APEX school of beauty culture in 1935. She was a member of Theta Nu Sigma Sorority and received a Bachelor of Arts in 1966. She opened her own beauty school, known as Robert Park Beauty School on Majestic Avenue in Norfolk. She is survived by a son, Lamott Harris of Norfolk; three grandchildren, Vernette Jones of Virginia Beach, Erica Land of Norfolk and Dwight V. Smith of Charlotte, NC; and a host of many other relatives, friends and neighbors. WINDSOR - Deacon James Madison Ryan was taken from the earth to be in the arms of our Almighty God on Wednesday, August 30, 2006. Five siblings preceded him in death, Alice Bond, Esther Skinner, Isolene Cherry, Willie Ryan, and Lawyer Ryan. His wife, Bessie Watson Ryan, a daughter Armetha Ryan, and a stillborn child also preceded him in death. On June 20, 1939, he was joined in holy matrimony to Bessie Watson. He was a member of Community Temple C.O.G.I.C. for many years. In 1985, he joined Free Temple Ministries. Later the church was renamed to Tabernacle Pillar of Fire. He loved being in church and has been a deacon for over forty years. He continued to remain faithful until his passing. He leaves to cherish his memories four sons, James Ryan, Jerry Ryan, Maurice Ryan and Kenneth Ryan, five daughters, Bertha Outlaw, Emma Smallwood, Cleo Cooper, Geraldine Williams and Shelia hardy, all of North Carolina, tow sisters Gladys Berry of Windsor and Teresa Elliott of Bronx, NY, two brothers, Edward Lee Ryan and Weldon Ryan of Windsor, thirty- two grandchildren, twenty four great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Funeral services were held at Tabernacle Pillar of Fire Ministries in Windsor on Sunday, September 3, 2006 at 2 p.m. with Elder Edward Conway officiating. Burial followed in the Ryan Family Cemetery. Cherry’s Funeral Home of Windsor was in charge of the arrangements.
