Born on Dec. 13, 1919, in Indian Woods, N.C., he was the son of the late John W. and Mattie Bond. Preceded in death by his loving wife of 60 years, Helen; brothers, James and Edward and sister, Winifred. He is survived by daughters, Sarah Brown and husband, Robert of Williamsburg, Va., Betty Davis and husband, Steve of Grapevine, Texas; grandchildren, Sonja Carpenter, Scott Brown, and Stephen Brown and wife, Leah; great-grandchildren, Casey Lea Carpenter, Bailey Jane Carpenter, and Jocelyn Grace Lesperance; brother, John W. Bond and wife, Fay; half-brother, Earl Daugherty and wife, Lucille; and a host of nieces and nephews. A member of the greatest generation, he was a WWII veteran, who retired in 1960 as a Boatswain’s Mate Chief, after a 23 year career in the U.S. Navy. During his Naval career, he served as an instructor at the Officer Candidate School in Newport, R.I. He then joined the Special Police Force at the Norfolk Naval Base, rising to the rank of Sergeant. Retiring again, he joined United Technologies Corporation serving onboard the UTC Freedom. In this capacity he was a member of the solid rocket booster recovery team for the NASA shuttle program. His final mission was the recovery effort after the explosion of the Challenger. He was a member of Charity Lodge No. 5, the Masonic Lodge in Windsor, N.: Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 28, Norfolk Chapter, and the Fleet Reserve Association. The family wishes to express sincere gratitude to Dona Beckner, for her gentle loving care and friendship and Eric Shaver of Williamsburg Area Faith in Action, for his faithful and much enjoyed weekly visits with our dad. We also gratefully acknowledge the excellent nursing care and love from Diane Stephenson, a sweet and gentle soul. Funeral services will be held at noon Thursday, June 26, at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Road, Williamsburg, VA. Retired Naval Chaplain, Fred Rothermel will officiate. Visitation will be at the funeral home our hour prior to the services. Interment will be at 2 p.m. at the Wakefield Cemetery, Wakefield, Va. Donations in his memory may be made to the American Heart Association, the American Diabetes Association, or the charity of your choice.
