(Reprinted from the Raleigh Register of May 6) JUST as our paper is preparing for the Press, the painful intelligence is verbally communicated to us, that WILLIAM W. CHERRY is no more! He died at Jackson, Northampton County, on Friday last, whither he had gone to Court, after a very brief illness. WILLIAM W. CHERRY was dear to the people of North Carolina, and their sympathies will be touched with the most painful fellowship of woe, as the intelligence of his death spread through the State. Loved by all who knew him, the State has not only lost one of her most gifted sons, and the legal Profession, one of its brightest ornaments, but society has been bereft of one of its most virtuous and upright members. Educated to the Bar, MR. CHERRY had the most enlarged conception of the duties of his Profession. MR. CHERRY had been nominated for Congress to succeed MR. RAYNER, and the proceedings of the Convention appear in this paper. Well may we exclaim in the language of Burke – “What shadows we are, and what shadows we pursue”?
