BRYANT WINDSOR - Elbert Ray Bryant, 68, of 109 Askewville-Bryant St., passed away suddenly Sunday, December 5 2004 at his home. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Martha Farmer Bryant, formerly of Robersonville; daughters, Cynthia Bryant Harrell of Salisbury, MD, Martha Bryant Lane of Rocky Mount; Roberta Bryant Cummings of Tabaccoville; and Gloria Bryant of the home; sons-in-law: Howard Harrell of Salisbury, MD, Paul Cummings of Tabaccoville, grandchildren: Vann Harrell of Monroe, Christopher Harrison of Williamston, Carla and Dave Pesce of Salisbury, MD, and Gregor Harrison of Bear Grass; great-grandchildren: David Pearce Jr. and Sarah Harrison: brother, Johnny Bryant of Williamston; sisters, Geraldine Todd of Askewville and Ann Taylor of Fort White, FL. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carlyle and Sarah Mizelle Bryant and a brother, Julian Bryant. Mr. Bryant retired from Georgia-Pacific after 32 years of service. After retirement, he started his own logger safety consulting business. He also was employed with Walker Funeral Home. Mr. Bryant rendered a lifetime of community service. He was currently serving as a board member of Askewille Assembly of God, a town commissioner of Askewville, and the Windsor Lions Club. He was a former Bertie County Commissioner, former mayor and police chief of Askewville. He was a charter member of the Askewville Fire Department, Askewville Lions Club, Askewville Elementary School PTA and Bertie County Rescue Squad, Unit 2. He formerly served as District Governor of District 31-J of the Lions Club, past president of the North Carolina Lions Association and Board member of the North Carolina Eye and Human Tissue Bank. His last contribution was the gift of sight as he was an eye donor. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 8, 2004 at 3 p.m. at the Askewville Assembly of God by the Revs. R.O. Denton, Jr. and R.O. Denton, Sr. Burial will follow in Edgewood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, December 7, 2004 at Walker Funeral Home and at other times from Mr. Bryant's home. Memorial gifts may be made to Askewville Fire Department or Windsor Lions Club. CHESTER STEPHENSON SPELLER Chester Stevenson "Steve" Speller, 80, died Sunday, December 5, 2004 at his home. He was born in Bertie County on November 30, 1924 to the late Thomas R. and Annie Leggett Speller and was predeceased by his wife, Virginia Corey Speller. Mr. Speller was retired from the NC Department of Transportation with 40 years of service. He was a member of Siloam Baptist Church and an Army Corps veteran of World War II. Funeral services were held Wednesday, December 8, 2004 at 11 a.m. at Siloam Baptist Church by the Rev. Jim Cox and the Rev. Roger Leggett. Burial followed in Woodlawn Cemetery in Williamston. Survivors include his daughters, Donna McGee, Dorinda Nicholson and husband Nick, Beth White and husband Joe, all of Williamston, his sons, Gary Speller and wife Bonnie of Williamston and Mike Speller and wife Karen of Bear Grass, his sisters Elsie Mobley of Williamston, Earle Lee of Merry Hill, Roberta Wagner of Chesapeake, VA and Lena Harry of Morehaven, FL, his brothers, James "Bogie" Speller, and Eugene "Bunk" Speller, both of Windsor, ten grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. SAXON AULANDER - William Leonard Saxton, died December 5, 2004 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital. Saxon was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church of Aulander and retired from the US Navy and Norfolk Shipyard. Arrangements are incomplete. Survivors include his wife, Nancy Saxon of Aulander; two sons, William G. Saxon of Chesapeake, Va., and David Saxon of Watertown, Wis., a brother, David Saxon of Kansas; two sisters, Mary Freeman and Kathy Armstrong, both of Oklahoma; and five grandchildren. EVIE N. OUTLAW Evie Marie Nichols Outlaw, 103, died Dec. 6 2004 at Guardian Care of Ahoskie. She was the widow of Bailey Outlaw. A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Garrett Funeral Home. Interment will be at Job Cemetery. Mrs. Outlaw was a homemaker and a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Survivors include several nieces and nephews. JEAN H. RACZ PORTSMOUTH - Jean Holloman Racz, 76, of the 5200 block of Bingham Drive, died Dec. 8, 2004. She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Andrew M. Racz; a daughter, Brenda R. Brett and son-in-law Robert of Portsmouth; two nephews, O.J. Womble III of Wrightsville Beach, N.C. and William L. Womble of Portsmouth. She was predeceased by a sister, Alyse H. Womble. Mrs. Racz was born in Bertie County, the daughter of the late Adrian Eugene Holloman and Myra Anne Myers Holloman. She had lived her most of her life. She graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in the Class of 1944 ½. She was a member of Port Norfolk Baptist Church. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery by the Rev. Terry Taylor. ELIZABETH CITY - Henry Carroll Robertson, 69, of the 200 block of South St., died Dec. 8, 2004, at Albermarle Hospital in Elizabeth City. Mr. Robertson was born Feb 2, 1935 in Bertie County, NC, and was the son of the late David Hillary Robertson and Amanda Evelyn Powell Robertson. He was a self-employed home improvement contractor, member of the Pasquotank-Providence Volunteer Fire Dept., and a former member of the Bee Keeper's Association. Survivors include his wife, Jane Jones Robertson; two sons, Henry Carroll "Hank" Robertson Jr. of Lillington, NC, and David Keith Robertson of the home; three stepdaughters, Lisa G. Austin and husband Joey of Elizabeth City, Keenen G. Broome and husband Chris of Lake Gaston, NC, and Sheila D. Grizzard of Chicago, Ill.; a brother, Carlton Robertson of Edenton; and two sisters, Myrtle R. Wynne of Ahoskie and Edna R. Joyner of Franklin, VA; and five grandchildren. Wilson, 88, a native of Bertie County, of the 200 block of Woodard Road, died Dec. 9, 2004. She was born to Silas and Geogiana Wilson on December 2, 1916. Her father and stepmother, Nonia Freeman Wilson, guided and directed her into adulthood. Her A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Saint Paul Missionary Baptist Church, Windsor with the Rev. James R. Wrighton, Pastor officiating. She was a member of St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church where she was a choir member, Mother of the Church, pastor's aide and deaconess. Survivors include her sisters, Ruth Swain, Leomi Holley, Beulah Parker and Mattie Brockers; and brothers, Alexander, Daniel, Luke, James and John Thomas and her sister-in-law, Annie M. Thompson Jr., a native of Aulander, died December 10, 2003, at Wesley Long Hospital. He was the widower of Veronica Thompson. While in Danville, Mr. Thompson was a charter member of Trinty United Methodist Church, co-founder of Tuscarora Country Club, a member of the school board, Director of the Chamber of Commerce, and a member of the Board of Directors of the First National Bank of Danville, serving as chairman of the Finance Committee. Survivors include his daughter, Susan Thompson Wrazen of Pinehurst; sons, John W. Thompson, III of Greensboro, David B. Thompson of Sophia and Brentley N. CECIL HOGGARD AULANDER - Cecil "Tack" Hoggard, 80, a native of Bertie County, died Dec. 11, 2004 at his residence. A funeral was conducted Monday at 3 p.m. at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, by the Rev. Alan Mizelle. Interment was in Aulander Cemetery. Hoggard was born in Bertie County, a farmer and a member of Horton's Baptist Church. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Survivors include his wife, Leona "Polly" Hoggard of Aulander; sons, Donald Austin of Aulander, Eugene Hoggard of Conway and Eddie Hoggard of Aulander; one daughter, Frances Bazemore of Windsor; a sister, Daisy Brown of Union; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. GWENDOLYN P. MIZELLE COLERAIN - Gwendolyn Pearce Mizelle, 79, of Colerain, NC, died Dec 11, 2004 in Richmond, VA. Mrs. Mizelle had retired from the Bertie County School System as a school secretary and was a member of the Colerain United Methodist Church. Surviving are her daughters, Judy M. Peterson of Richmond and Brenda M. Brown of Ahoskie; grandchildren, Virginia P. Smith, Elizabeth J. Peterson and Leigh Ann Wise; great-grandchildren, Zachary S. Wise, Catherine L. Wise, Catherine F. A native of Windsor, NC, he was a retired pastor from Phillippi Church of God in Christ, Portsmouth, and was a member and bishop of United Pentecostal Churches of America. Survivors include his wife, Thelma R. Small; six daughters, Mildred Small, Phenetha Wolf, both of Portsmouth, Pastor DeBorah Allen of Accokeek, MD, Ruth Harvey of San Diego, CA, Annette R. Jones of New Jersey and Mae Bell Ahmed of Dallas TX; three sons, William Small of Chesapeake, Bishop Thomas E. WILLIFORD AHOSKIE - Dinah Jean Cooke Williford, 69, died surrounded by her family Dec. 13, 2004, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Dinah was born April 5, 1935, in Aulander, NC. She was the daughter of the late John Richard "Dick" Cooke Jr. and Maybelle Ward Cooke of Aulander. Dinah was a graduate of Wake Forest College, a retired school teacher and a devoted mother and wife. She was a member of the Ahoskie Women's Club, the Ahoskie Book Club, First Baptist Church of Ahoskie, served on the Aulander Rescue Squad and Aulander Auxiliary for 21 years and was a Paul Harris Fellow with the Rotary Foundation. For more than 20 years she traveled the world with her husband as he served in the armed forces, finally settling in the place of her birth. She is survive by her husband, Charles J. Williford; a son. Charles "Rick" Williford; daughter Lynne Williford Stalls and her husband Bill; and grandchildren, Cameron and Chip Williford. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church of Ahoskie with the Rev. Jesse J. Croom Jr. presiding. Interment will follow in Aulander Cemetery. Born in Aulander, NC, Charles was a 1965 graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University. He was a founding member of the Pembroke Kiwanis Club, serving as past president with more than 30 years of perfect attendance. He was a devoted son, father, husband and brother. Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Carole M. Parks; his mother Rose L. Parks of Suffolk; a daughter, Heather P. Lee and her husband Scott of Virginia Beach; two brothers, Donald R. Mr. Stocks was born in Bertie County on January 28, 1938 to the late Rou Alton and Millie Leggett Stocks. A graveside funeral was conducted Sunday in Edgewood Cemetery, Windsor, by the Rev. J.N. GEORGE R. STARK KELFORD - George R. Stark, 88, a native of Bertie County, died December 16, 2004 at his residence. He was born on December 11, 1916 In Bertie County. WILLIAM S. CHERRY WINDSOR - William Sutton Cherry Sr., 76, a native of Bertie County, died December 17, 2004. He was the widower of this first wife, Betty Mardre Cherry. Sanders of Tampa, FL; and 13 grandchildren. JAMES SMALLWOOD PORTSMOUTH - James Smallwood, 97, of the 1200 block of Warfield Drive, departed this life on Dec 17, 2004. Born in Windsor, NC, he worked in civil service for more than 30 years at the Naval Amphibious Base, Little Creek, until his retirement. He was also employed with the Bank Of Virginia for 10 years and Virginia National Bank for five years. He was a member of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church for more than 50 years, where he served on the Male Usher Board. He was a World War II veteran. He was predeceased by his daughter, Eunice J. Stinson. Survivors include his loving wife, Helen L. Smallwood of Portsmouth; two daughters, Helen J. HARRELL CHESAPEAKE - Franklin Delano Harrell, 59, of the 1800 block of Persimmon Court passed away Dec. 18, 2004. Born in Aulander, NC, he was the son of the late Luther and Lucille Cox Harrell. Frank was the owner and operator of F.D. Harrell Plumbing Co. Survivors include his loving wife of 30 years, Lucy Rebecca Harrell of Chesapeake; five children, Delores Lewis, James Harrell, Charity Moore, Frank Harrell, JR. and Paul Harrell; 11 grandchildren; one great grandchild; as well as four brothers. Mr Hill was a member of Perrytown Assembly of God and retired from the North Carolina Department of Transportation as a traffic service foreman. He is survived by his wife Leslie Hill of Windsor, NC; three brothers, Joe Hill and Haywood Hill, both of Windsor and Jim Hill of Virginia Beach; two sisters, Nadine H. Bazemore and Alease H. Mr. Hill was a member of Perrytown Assembly of God and retired from NC Department of Transportation as a traffic service foreman. COLERAIN - Thomas Williams Jr., 58, a native of Bertie County, died December 25, 2004/ A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at Wilder's Funeral Home Chapel, Aulander. Burial will be in the Wilder-Cherry Family Cemetery. Williams was a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church, Colerain. Survivors include sons, Thomas Williams Jr. III of Virginia Beach, VA., and Gregroy Privott of Afghanistan; two daughters, Sherritta Fentress and Cheryl Freeman, both of Chesapeake; two sisters, Patricia White of Smithfield, VA., and Everlee Wilson of Washington, DC; and nine grandchildren. FRANKLIN D. RUSSELL WINDSOR - Franklin Deleno Russell, 60, died December 26, 2004. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Edgewood Baptist Church by the Rev. Chris Lee. EARLY II LEWISTON-WOODVILLE - James Godsey Early II, 58, a native of Atlanta, Ga., died December 26, 2004 at his home. A memorial service will be conducted at Grace Episcopal Church on Saturday with the Rev. Noah Howard officiating. Early was a farmer and a member of Grace Episcopal Church. He was Town Commissioner for the town of Lewiston-Woodville and a member of Roanoke-Chowan Bass Masters. He also served in the National Guard. Survivors include his wife, Cora Urquhart Early of Lewiston; daughters, Harriett Simmons Early of Greensboro and Carol Urquhart Early of Charlotte; and a sister, Chris E. Wiggs of Rocky Mount. LEON EDWARDS AHOSKIE - Leon Edwards, 87, a native of Bertie County, died December 28, 2004, at his residence. Mr. Edwards was born on April 13, 1917. He was a farmer and member of Conoconary Baptist Church in Aulander, NC. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 2, 2005 at Conoconary Baptist Church with Rev. Robert Horton officiating. Burial followed in the Edwards Family Cemetery in Aulander. Wilder's Funeral Home, Aulander was in charge of arrangements. Survivors include his wife, Willie Mae Knight Edwards of the home; sons, James Edwards and Henry Edwards, both of Hampton, VA, Kenneth Edwards, David Louis Edwards, and Elton Lee Edwards, all of Hexalena, and Johnny Edwards of Smithfield, VA.; daughters, Rosemary Edwards, Joann Harris, Linda Cowan and Juanita Cowan, all of Hampton and Judith Cox of Fayetteville; 18 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. ROSA H. WILLIAMS ROXOBEL - Rosa Harris Williams, 76, died Dec 30 2004 at Roanoke Chowan Hospital. A funeral service will be held at noon Thursday in Wilder's Funeral Chapel, Aulander. Burial will be in the Cherry Family Cemetery, Aulander. Mrs. Williams was a homemaker. Survivors include one daughter, Annette Harvey of Roxobel; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. TERRY L. BROWN AULANDER - Terry L. Brown, 30, died Dec 31, 2004. Survivors include his mother, Jane R. Brown; and his brothers, Jerry and Danny Brown all of Aulander. A graveside service will be held at 4:30 p.m. Sunday at Cedarlawn Cemetery in Rich Square. The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Aulander from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today.
