CURCIO AHOSKIE – Mary Cullipher Curcio, 88, a native of Bertie County, died December 2, 2005 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital. Mrs. Curcio was a textile seamstress and a Baptist. Survivors include her former husband, Jerome Pat Curcio of Ahoskie; two sisters, Evelyn Daniels and Beulah Grizzard, both of Ahoskie; one brother, Thomas Cullipher of Windsor; and a stepson, Everette Smithwick of Currituck. A graveside service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Highland Memorial Gardens, by the Rev. Robert M. May. The family will assemble at the cemetery at 2:45 p.m. Sunday prior to services. Brown, 87, of the 100 block of Cowan Lane, Windsor, NC, died December 3, 2005 in Bertie Memorial Hospital in Windsor, NC. She was born n October 5, 1918, the seventh of ten children to the late Alexander Raynor and Lettie Bond Raynor. She joined Cedar Landing Baptist Church at an early age. Mrs. Lettie, as she was lovingly called, attended public school in Bertie County and graduated from W. S. Etheridge High School. In 1941, she married the late Lewis Brown. She leaves to cherish her memories her daughters, Sadie Lodman an Maggie Parker of Bronx, NY, Catherine Foreman and Gwendolyn Bond of Chesapeake, VA, and Evelyn Brown of Windsor, her sons, Willie Brown and Otis Brown of Chesapeake, Augustus Brown of Charlotte, Lester Brown of Fayetteville, and Ronnie White of Windsor, her sister, Lucy Hopkins of Manhatten, NY, fourteen grandchildren, twenty- three great grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, four step grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends. LIZZIE ANDREWS VIRGINIA BEACH – Lizzie Andrews, 86, died December 4, 2005. She was born March 22, 1919 in Windsor, NC to the late Edward Rascoe and Maggie Epps. She was born to the late Hobert and Malvania Williams on July 20, 1932. She joined Weeping Mary Baptist Church at an early age and later moved her membership to Cedar Landing Missionary Baptist Church. She was a loving wife, mother, and friend to all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her husband, the late Isaac Williams. Unto this union, nine children were born, one of whom, Malvania Williams, preceded her in death. She is survived by her children Willie Williams of the home, James Williams of Greenville, Bettie Shepherd of Chesapeake, Margie Roulhac of Merry Hill, Shirley Smith of Williamston, Mary Duck of Como, NC, Saundra Stephenson of Murfreesboro, and Michael Williams of Windsor; nineteen grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, her sister Bernice Williams of Bronx, NY her brother Clyde Williams of Lewiston, and a host of nieces, nephews, and special friends Linda Harrell and Eva Watford. RICHARD W. SPIVEY KELFORD - Richard Wood Spivey, 88, a native of Bertie County, died December 8, 2005. He was the widower of Laura Peel Spivey. Spivey was a member of St. Marks Episcopal Church, and a retired meat inspector for the NC Department of Agriculture. Survivors include two daughters; Donna Wood Spivey and Rebecca Wood Uzzell, both of Winterville; three sons, John Vernon Spivey, Plymouth, MA, Richard W. "Dickey" Spivey Jr. of Wilmington and the Rev Doug Spivey of Washington; nine grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. ARMSTRONG CHERRY LEWISTON - Armstrong Cherry, 71, a native of Bertie County, died December 8, 2005 at his residence. He was born on March 24, 1924 in Bertie County, NC. GEORGE BRIDGETT WINDSOR – George Bridgett, 78, of the 500 block of Roanoke St. Windsor, died December 9, 2005 n his home surrounded by his family. He was born May 5, 1927 to the late Georgia and Edward Bridget. He was employed at Lea Lumber Company in Windsor until his retirement in 1989. He was well known for his sense of humor and being a hard working man who cared for his family. BENJAMIN STEWART WINDSOR - Benjamin Stewart, 53, of the 600 block of Woodard Road, died December 10, 2005 at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville. He was born on September 16, 1952 in Bertie County to Mr. Edward Charles Stewart and the late Amelia Barrow Stewart. He joined Cedar Landing Missionary Baptist Church at an early age. On April 27, 1975, he married Lorraine Bazemore. He was employed at Perdue, Inc. of fourteen years until his health failed. NANCY SMALLWOOD BUNCH Nancy Smallwood Bunch departed this life on Saturday, December 10, 2005, at her home. She was born November 10, 1963 to William T. Rascoe and the late Lacie C. Rascoe. Her brother, Alonza Smallwood and one sister, Emma R. Smallwood, preceded her in death. She attended Bertie County public schools. She was a member of the New Hope Pentecostal Holiness Church, Lewiston, NC. She was a devoted wife and caring mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt. She was a very sweet person to those who knew her. She was a native of Bertie County, the daughter of Johnny and Tiny Lassiter Cofield. She was preceded in death by her father. Ms. Askew was previously employed by the Human Service Center, Ahoskie, as a Medical Records Secretary. Survivors include her husband, Allen E. Askew Jr. of Gates County; two sons, SFC Troy L. Weaver and wife, Kelly, and Allen E. MARY J. WATSON WINDSOR - Mary J. Rascoe Watson, 73, of the 500 block of Ghent St, died December 14, 2005. Mary, who was affectionately known as and called "Bumpsy" by everyone who knew her, was born to the late Wash and Lizzie Rascoe. She received her formal education in the Bertie County Schools, Windsor, NC. She was baptized at Indian Woods Baptist Church at an early age. She served on the Usher Board until physically unable. She was retired from Blue Bell after many years of dedicated service. She was married to the late Lewis Watson Jr. From this union, four children were born. Her favorite pastime was quilting, a skill she learned at an early age from her grandmother. She was excited and looked forward to attending Senior Saints Bible Class. She enjoyed family gatherings and vacations. CHESAPEAKE, VA – Roy Lester Bond Sr., 85, a native of Bertie County, died December 14, 2005 at Maryview Hospital, Portsmouth. Roy was born March 20, 1920 to Willie H. and Mary A. Bond in Windsor, North Carolina. He was married to Vester Speller (deceased September 24, 1999). Four children were born to this union, Marie, Roy Jr., Judy and Eugene (deceased). Early in this marriage, Roy and Vester lived in Piney Woods and later moved to St. Francis where they raised their family. Roy spent his life farming. He enjoyed fishing and spending time with family and friends. ALFRED JAMES CLARK Alfred James Clark, A.J., son of the late Julia Sanderlin Manning Clark and the late Jerry Clark, was born September 6, 1915 in Windsor, North Carolina. A.J. joined Sandy Point Missionary Baptist Church at an early age. He attended school in Windsor, NC. He was a hard worker from a young age. Some jobs included construction and custodial work. He was also a veteran of World War II. A.J. was united in holy matrimony to Cora Bunch, who preceded him in death. They resided in Ossining, NY most of their lives. His hobby and pastime was fishing. He was preceded in death by four sisters, Pauline, Josephine, Oscola, and Margaret, as well as two brothers, John Henry and Jimmy. She was raised by foster parents Lillie and Jordan Mitchell. She was educated in Bertie County. She was untied in Holy Matrimony to Henry Leary. To this union was born one child, Roger Leary, who preceded her in death. She joined St. Paul Baptist Church at an early age. She later became a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church of Norfolk, Va. She was born in Lewiston, NC a daughter of the late Arthur and Vandora Powel Peterson. She was a longtime member and served on the usher board of New Bethel Baptist Church in Portsmouth and was a salesperson for K-Mart. He worked as a farmer for thirty years, at Perdue, Inc. for ten years, and as a caretaker for Indian Woods Missionary Baptist Church for twenty years. He was a faithful and active member of Indian Woods Missionary Baptist Church for over seventy years. He served on the Deacon’s Ministry, the Trustee Ministry, the John W. Eley Choir, The Gospel choir, the Faith, Hope, and Love Food Bank, the Bus Ministry, and the Intercessory Prayer Ministry. Cameron, 89, of the 1500 block of Melon St., departed this life Monday, December 19, 2005, in a local hospital. She was born in Windsor, N.C., to the late James and Reanie Mitchell. OLDHAM PORTSMOUTH – Ollie Willoughby Oldham, 90, passed away peacefully December 20, 2005. Ms. Oldham was born in Bertie County, North Carolina, and was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Willoughby. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Eugene Kenneth Oldham; sisters, Mary Atkinson and Naomi Giddeon; and brother, Hillary Willoughby. Mrs. Oldham was retired from Leggetts in downtown Portsmouth where she was a buyer. She was longtime member of Pincecrest Baptist Church. She is survived by her daughter, Gloria Ann Lawson of Mount Pleasant, SC; her sons, Kenneth Poe Oldham and wife June Ladd Oldham of Chesapeake and Robert Lynn Oldham and wife Theresa Phillips Oldham of Windsor, VA; one sister, Frances Moore and husband James of North Carolina; five grandchildren, Jeffrey Thomas Lawson and wife Vicki of Mount Pleasant, Christopher Bret Lawson also of Mount Pleasant, Lindsay Marie Oldham of Washington, DC, Jospeh Ryan Oldham of Portsmouth and Kristen Oldham Scribner and husband Nicholas of Suffolk; and three great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Ann Lawson, Benjamin Thomas Lawson and Rebecca Lynn Lawson, all of Mount Pleasant. Ms. Oldham will long be remembered for her love to cook for others until she could no longer cook for herself. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and will be deeply missed by all who knew her. WILLARD WALTON LEE PORTSMOUTH VA – Mrs. Willard Walton Lee, 89, of the 600 block of Confederate Ave., died December 20, 2005 at Maryview Hospital. He was a native of Bertie County, North Carolina. She was born on January 23, 1916. She was a secretary at Beautiful Zion Baptist Church for over thirty- five years. WINDSOR - Frank Speller Jr., 60, of the 500 block of Woodard Road, died December 22, 2005 at Chowan Hospital. He was born to the late Frank Speller and Claudia Heckstall in Bertie County on June 20, 1945. At an early age, he joined Macedonia Baptist Church. He is survived by his brother Edward Speller of Norfolk, Va., his children, Sandra, Frank Lee, Robert, and Glenn, his grandchildren Columbia Williams Jr., and Randolph Evans, and a very special niece Monique. He was employed with the Town of Windsor for fourteen years. Her also worked in farming, logging, and construction. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, cooking, walking and sitting under shade trees. A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in Gilliam Funeral Home Chapel, Windsor. MYERS COLERAIN - Icie Todd Myers, 95, of the 500 block of Meadow Road, died December 23, 20054 in Guardian Care of Elizabeth City, surrounded by her family. Mrs. Myers was born in Bertie County, a daughter of the late John and Mary Frances Hughes Todd and was the widow of Paul James Myers. She was a homemaker and a member of Elm Grove Baptist Church. Survivors include her son, Bill Myers and wife Ann of Chesapeake; a brother, Blackston Todd of Virginia Beach; and grandchildren, Sherri-Lyn, James, and Trenton Whitfield and Kendal and Jeremy Hulce. TOMMY R.WHITE SR. CHESAPEAKE – Tommy R. White Sr., 65, of the 900 block of Haledon Road passed away December 30, 2005, in Chesapeake. A native of Askewville, NC, he was the son of the late Gency and Benny Foster White. He was a member of Local Union No. 79 Iron Workers ofr 43 years where he was affectionately know as "Blue". BYRUM TYNER – Edna Mae Boyce Byrum, 77, of the 300 block of Sign Pine Road, died December 30, 2005, in Chowan Hospital. Mrs. Byrum was born in Bertie County and was the daughter of the late Vannie Ernest and Rosie Etta Byrum Boyce. A homemaker, she was a member of Warwick Baptist Church and its Adult Ladies Sunday School class. Surviving are her husband of more that 60 years, Isaac Byrum Jr.; two daughters, Florette Byrum Willett and husband Fred of Winston-Salem, NC, and Sheila Byrum Anderson and her husband Larry of Elizabeth City; a son, Gary Byrum and wife Jan of Winston-Salem; a sister, Naomi B. Bunch of Edenton; five grandchildren, Ashley Thomas, Brandon Willett, Cale Ward, Jody Ward and Chairty Byrum; and seven great- grandchilden. ISOLENE PARKER WINDSOR - Isolene Parker, 78, died December 30, 2005 at Bertie Memorial Hospital. She was born on October 25, 1927 to the late Clinton and Weta Parker. She is survived by three sisters and two brothers, Mary Parker of Windsor, Shirley Cherry, Inell Duggar, and Sammie Parker of New York, George Parker of Connecticut, as will as many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers, Lucy Parker, Lue Parker, Rosa Sutton, Walter Parker, and Felton Parker. Isolena will always be remembered. Franklin of the 400 block of S. Rosemont Road died December 31, 2005 in a local hospital. Born in Windsor, NC, she was a self-employed beautician, the widow of John G. Franklin and a member of Bibleway Holiness. Survivors include two daughters, Queenie Speller and Shirley Kwamina; one goddaughter, Elizabeth Mebane; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. JAMES LUTHER SPIVEY James Luther Spivey was born April 18, 1947 in Windsor, North Carolina to Budwood Spivey and Tullie Cherry-Spivey who preceded him in death. James received his education at W.S. Etheridge High School in Windsor. He received his spiritual guidance and spiritual guidance at Mount Ararat Baptist Church. In 2004, James rededicated his life to Christ at Bethel Church in New York, NY. James was a truck driver by trade for the majority of his life. He also enjoyed working on cars and trucks. He was very mechanically inclined. He was not a mechanic by trade; however, his work was as good as any professional. James moved to Newark, NJ as a young man. Shortly afterwards he met and married Barbara Jean Jones of Newark. From this union they had three children, tow of whom, Richard Jones and Danny Spivey, preceded him in death. He is survived by sons, Dwayne Jones-Spivey, Howard Timmons, Lawrence Thompson, Lavan Thompson, and James Spivey, seventeen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. James was the beloved brother of Catherine Davis, Eva Outlaw, Debra Watson, and Budwood Spivey Jr., who were called home before him. The siblings left to cherish his memory are Shirley Ryan, Wilma Campbell, Barbara Jean Spivey, Vivian Cummings, Wanda Marks, Charmaine Marks, Jenette Marks, Leon Spivey, Johnny Ray Spivey, and Rudolph Spivey. He also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends to cherish his memory. To truly know him was to love him. Funeral services were held at Mount Ararat Missionary Baptist Church on Saturday, December 31, 2005 at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Carnell Spivey officiating.
