AULANDER - James A. Dickens Jr., 70, died February 1, 2005, at Three Rivers Health an Rehab Center, Windsor. He was the widower of Peggy Jean Dickens. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at the Chapel of Massey Funeral Home by the Rev. Lester Jarret. Interment will be at the Morris Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home, Aulander, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Dickens was a retired long distance truck driver and a veteran of the U.S. Army. Survivors include two sons, James A. Dickens III of Windsor and Steven E. Dickens; three daughters, Wanda Jordon of Cleveland Heights, Ohio, Lynn Pierce of Fayetteville and Betty Ann Garcia of Maryland; five sisters, Nellie Morris and Virgie Terry, both of Aulander, Sue Dunlow of Ahoskie, Betty Quellette of Aulander, Rosa McLaurin of Fayetteville; and sever grandchildren. QUEENIE E. BOND WINDSOR - Queenie Elizabeth Bond, was born to Aaron and Alvana Speller on January 25, 1920. She died February 1, 2005. Queenie was preceded in death by her parents, Aaron and Alvana Speller, her husband Willie Henry Bond, Sr., sisters, Marjorie Parker and Elsie Bond, brothers Euriah Speller and Aaron Speller, Jr. and two sons, Harvey Lewis Bond and Luther Bond, Sr. A funeral was conducted Saturday at St. Frances Baptist Church, Windsor, by the Rev. Dennis Cherry. Interment was in the Bond Family Cemetery. Gilliam Funeral Home was in charge. Survivors include one daughter, Jackie Garner of Washington; four sons, Willie Henry Bond Jr of Alexandria, VA, James Bond of Massillon, Ohio. Curtis Bond of Windsor and Randy Bond of Canton; two sisters, Fannie Williams of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla, and Lillie Howard of Portsmouth; a brother, Luther Speller of Windsor; 13 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. MADIE L. SPANGLER VIRGINIA BEACH - Madie L. Spangler, 76, formerly of the 4500 block of Good Adams Lane, passed away Feb. 2, 2005. A native of Bertie County, NC, Mrs. Spangler grew up in Berkeley. She was an avid gardener and retired as a nurse from Lake Taylor Hospital. Survivors include two daughters, Linda Scott of Chesapeake and Thelma Owen; four sons, Jon Spangler, Sidney Spangler, and Richard Spangler, all of Virginia Beach and Rober Brown Jr. of Roanoke, VA; a half sister, Deborah Shipe of Virginia Beach; a half brother, Joseph Ward of Georgia; 13 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, where a service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday by the Rev. Clayton Ritter. WATKINS WINDSOR - Elizabeth Ann Jones Watkins, 81, died in her sleep February 2, 2005, at Brian Center. She was born Jan 22, 1924, in Early Station, NC to the late Carroll Lyman Jones and Lydia Day Eley Jones. Mrs. Watkins grew up in nearby Aulander, where she attended Aulander High School. She graduated from St. Mary's School, Raleigh, NC in 1942, and Salem College in Winston-Salem, NC in 1944. Near the end of World War II she served as a decoder for the Military Intelligence Division of the War Department in Washington, DC. Mrs. Watkins returned to Aulander to teach school for a few years after the war. In 1951, while employed by Thalhimer's in Winston- Salem, she met and married Henry Carrington Watkins III. They lived in Winston-Salem, Omaha and Dallas, before settling in Kinston, NC in 1957. In 1980 they designed and built their home in Windsor, where they enjoyed their retirement, sometimes traveling and always together. Mrs. Watkins was preceded in death by her beloved husband in November 2003. Mrs. Watkins was a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Windsor. She is survived by her two sons, Henry Carrington Watkins IV of Creedmoor, NC and Thaddeus Jones Watkins and wife Rusty Walden of New York City. Her sister Cordelia Jones Blanchard of Ahoskie also preceded her in death. A private graveside service is being held today at Masonic Cemetery in Culpepper, VA. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to St. Thomas' Episcopal Church of Windsor or to the charity of one's choice. A memorial service honoring the lives of Elizabeth Jones and Henry Carrington Watkins, III will be held at St. Thomas' Episcopal Church of Windsor at a date and time to be announced. LOUIS CARLTON BUNCH Louis Carlton Bunch, 76, of Riverby Farm Road, died Wednesday, February 2, 2005 in Britthaven Nursing Facility. Mr. Bunch was son of the Dixie Harrell and Clarence Edward Bunch. Mr. Bunch was member of Rocky Hock Baptist and the Carey Evans Sunday School Class. He was a retired farmer and commercial fisherman. Survivors include his wife of almost 56 years, Naomi Boyce Bunch, his daughter Pam Collins and her husband Joe of Shelby, NC, his son Donald and his wife Janet of Raleigh, his sister Carolyn Rogerson of Winfall, NC, four brothers, Ralph Bunch of Windsor, Alvin Bunch, Lindsey Ray Bunch, and Edward Bunch, all of Edenton, five grandchildren, Chris Bunch, Cory Bunch, Emily Bunch, Sean Collins and Erin Collins, and two great grandchildren, Alex Bunch and Ethan Bunch. Mr. Bunch was preceded in death by his brother Thurrell Gray Bunch. A celebration of Mr. Bunch's life was held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, February 4, 2005 in Rocky Hock Baptist Church. JOHNSON EURE - Garnett Evans Johnson, 82, of the 100 block of Tinkham Road, died February 3, 2005, in Obici Memorial Hospital, Suffolk. Mrs. Johnson was born in Bertie County, NC and was the daughter of the late John W. and Julia Elizabeth Mathis Evans. She worked as a seamstress with the Ahoskie Manufacturing Co. and Dalure Fashions in Gatesville. A lifelong member of Cool Spring Baptist Church, she was active in its Women's Missionary Union and Grace Crawford Sunday School Class. She was a member of the Gatesville Chapter No 335, Order of the Eastern Star. In addition to her parents and all 10 of her siblings, she was predeceased by husbands, W. Melvin Harrell and Lewis P. Johnson. Surviving are one daughter, Olia Elizabeth Harrell and husband Stanley of Virginia Beach; one son, James M. Harrell and wife Inda of Eure; four grandchildren, Stan M. Harrell and wife Paige of Alexandria, Keith M. Harrell and wife Debbie of Louisville, KY; Cynthia A. Jeffers and husband John of Goldsboro and James C. LARRY MCCOY CHERRY Larry McCoy Cherry, better known as "Uncle Larry" was the son of Jarsie and Bleva Cherry. He was born on November 22, 1950. He departed this life on February 4, 2005 in Norfolk General Hospital. Throughout his life Larry was always a quiet and gentle person. He was always around to light up a room with his tender laugh and comforting smile. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Benjamin Earl, Robin Leonard and Eddie Garcia. He leaves to cherish his memories, his parents, Jarsie and Belva Cherry of Windsor; one sister, Judith Gordon of Norfolk, VA, one niece, Ayshiah Gordon, one nephew, William Gordon and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and close friends. CLARA BOLTON AHOSKIE - Mrs. Clara Bracy Tyler Bolton, age 89, died at Autumn Care Nursing Home in Rich Square on Saturday, February 5, 2005 Mrs. Bolton was a member of the Sandy Run Baptist Church in Roxobel, NC. She was born to the late Josie Smith Bracy and William Paul Bracy. She was married to Herbert Tyler and they settled in Rich Square where they raised three children. Following the death of Mr. Tyler she was married to Ashley Bolton. Mrs. Bolton worked for seventeen years for the Mylecraft Company as well as working for Pope's Dime Store. Preceding her in death besides her parents are two sisters, Mary Jane Duke and Louise Powell; four brothers, Claude, Clarence, Dick and Owen Bracy. Survivors include her three sons, Ted Tyler and his wife Kathryn of Rich Square, NC, Bobby Tyler and his wife Nancy of Newport News, VA and Donnie Tyler and his wife Jane of Nashville, NC; two stepdaughters, Rosie Jernigan and her husband Ronnie, of Colerain, NC, Susie Johnson and her husband Don, of Rich Square, NC; one stepson, Pat Bolton and his wife Jennifier of Wilmington, NC; and one sister, Sarah Williams of Ahoskie, NC. BARBER AHOSKIE - Inez Jernigan Barber, 81, of 202 South St. died at the home of her daughter in Elizabeth City, NC, February 5, 2005. HARDY AULANDER - Jannie Futrell Hardy, 73, of the 100 block of Teaster Shack Road, died February 5, 2005 in Newport News, VA She was born on May 5, 1931 in Bertie County. She was a homemaker and a member of Metropolitan Interdenominational Church of God, in Aulander. She is survived by her daughters, Deborah Applewhite of Newport News, VA, Jane Taylor of Cofield, NC, Linda Allen and Velma Horton, both of Aulander, her sons, Roy Futrell of Murfreesboro, Minister Willie Futrell of Rich Square, and Michael Hardy of Ahoskie, her seven brothers, George Futrell of Aulander, James Futrell and Walter Futrell both of Ahoskie, Alvin Futrell and Charles Futrell both of Newport News, VA, Joseph Futrell of Murfreesboro, and Edward Futrell of Kelford, her three sisters, Josie Fennell, Elnora Whitaker and Dolly Dukes, all of Aulander, her seventeen grandchildren, her great-grandchildren, great great- grandchildren, and her two aunts, Aleathea Vinson and Ivory Vaughan of Ahoskie. THOMPSON ROXOBEL - Otis James Thompson, better known as Ted, 70, a native of Bertie County, was born September 2, 1934 to the late James and Georgia R. Thompson, died February 5, 2005. The family later moved to Northampton County where he attended the W.S. Creecy School He was a member of the Sandy Branch Baptist Church in Roxobel, NC. At an early age he married his High School sweetheart, the late Daisy Willliams Thompson and to this union they raised nine children. They lived and made their home in New York City. He retired from the New York City Transit Authority as the Deputy Superintendent before returning home to North Carolina. He was active in the community and the Masonic Family of Kelford. He was a member of Royal Lodge #471, Roanoke Consistory #248 Williamston, Rofelt Pasha Shrine Temple #175 Rocky Mount, NC and Dorcas #97 OES. He was a Past Potentate and a Past Commander-In-Chief. His work for Rofelt Pasha earned him Potentate of the year in 1998 for the Desert of North Carolina. At the time of his death he was serving as the recorder for the Desert of North Carolina. Most of all he was a beloved father, brother, uncle, grandfather, and friend to those who knew him. A funeral was conducted Thursday at Sandy Branch Baptist Church in Roxobel by the Rev. Lycurgus R. A native of Windsor, NC, formerly of York county, she has been a resident of Smithfield since 1998. Becki received, with honors, her bachelor's degree from East Carolina University and her master's degree from Old Dominion University. For some 30 years, Becki taught in the Newport News School system, where she taught accounting and business for 28 years at Ferguson High School. Preceded in death by her father, Mitchell Smithwick, Becki is survived by her husband of 41 years, Kenneth Congleton; her son, Gregory Congleton, his wife Jenny and grandson, Greg Jr. of Hampton; her mother Vashti Smithwick of Windsor, three sisters Dianne Dixon and husband Richard of Jacksonville, FL; Shirley Blake of Raleigh, NC, and Mickey Stanley and her husband Jack of Williamston, NC; and several nieces and nephews. WHITE MERRY HILL - Leonard Carson White, 79, of the 400 block of Farless Road, died February 7, 2005 at Bertie Memorial Hospital. Mr. White was born in Bertie County on March 28, 1925, to the late Paul and Beatrice (Addie) White and was predeceased by two brothers, Hubert and Vernon White and sister Grace Askew. Mr. White was retired from VEPCO after 28 years of service and also served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. Mr. White was a member of South Norfolk Moose Lodge No. 464 and a past governor and fellow of the order for 40 years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and gardening and was a member of Glade and Farless Hunting Clubs. Survivors include his wife, Blanche F. ASBELL WINDSOR - Gordon Bennett Asbell, 69, died Tuesday, February 8, 2005 at Chowan Hospital. Mr. Asbell was born in Bertie County on December 30, 1935 to the late Charnie Franklin and Julia Lawrence Asbell. Mr. Asbell was retired from Sprint. He also served his county in the US Navy. Mr. Asbell was a member of Greens Cross Baptist Church. A graveside service will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. in Edgewood Cemetery by the Rev. Michael Bailey. The family invites friends to the church fellowship hall after the service fotr food and fellowship. PAULINE B. ADAMS MILLENNIUM - Mrs Pauline B. Adams, age 90, died at Pinewood Manor Rest Home in Ahoskie, NC on Tuesday, February 8, 2005. Mrs Adams worked in the retail clothing business for many years. She and her husband made their home in Millennium and attended the Millennium Pentecostal Holiness Church. Prededing her in death is her husband, John Quincy Adams, her mother and father, Ellen and Elisha Brown, three sisters, Mae Parker, Penelope White and Martha Johnson and four brothers, Zeb, John, Sam and Hezzie Brown. MCLEMORE HENDERSON - Agnes Vann Brown McLemore, 98, died peacefully at Britthaven of Henderson on February 10, 2005. A resident of Henderson for most of her life, she and her husband also resided in Fuquay-Varina for a number of years. Mrs. McLemore was born in Bertie County, NC, the daughter of the late Thomas Cleveland Brown and Nancy Miller Brown. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Henderson. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 54 years, Amos Leslie McLemore; a grandson, Claude Swanson Dodd III; a son-in-law, David Thomas Ayscue Jr., two sisters, Louise B. Fortune and Annie Mae B. White; and two brothers, Louis Ray Brown and Bennie Cline Brown. A devoted mother, she is survived by her children, Amos Leslie McLemore Jr and wife Virginia of Rolesville, Agnes M. Dodd and husband Swanson of Henderson, Nancy M. Ayscue of Henderson, and Lena Kay Scarborough and husband Lee of Virginia Beach; eight grandchildren, Amos L. Agnes was the oldest of nine children. Her surviving siblings are Sarah Penney of Greenville, Stanley W. Brown and wife Lois of Columbia, S.C., Ollie M. Brown of Ahoskie and Shirley P. SMITHWICK MERRY HILL - Jean Hoggard Smithwick, 79, of Cypress Road, Blackbeard's Beach, passed away after a valiant struggle with cancer Feb. 11, 2005. Lloyd St., died February 12, 2005, in Roanoke Chowan Hospital. Mr. Pierce was born in Colerain, NC the son of the late Annie Lyon and Rev Loy Vann Pierce. Mr. Pierce retired from Belk's after 34 years of service, having began his career as a sales clerk in the Ahoskie store. He then assumed the manager position of the Belk Tyler Store in Murfreesboro. Form there he moved to the Belk Tyler offices as a division buyer for the 15 Belk stores in Northeastern North Carolina. Following his retirement, he began a second career in the rest home industry as co- owner/administrator of Willowbrook Center of Care, Wilson, NC, and as owner/operator of Carolina Rest Home in Roanoke Rapids, NC.' Following retirement from the rest home industry, he and his wife returned to their home in Ahoskie. Mr. Pierce was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II in the Pacific Theater. During his military service he received several awards including the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, Combat Infantryman Badge, and an Honorable Service Lapel Button World War II. After returning from service, Mr. Pierce became active in many community service organizations. He was a past president of the Ahoskie Jaycees, part president of the Ahoskie Chamber of Commerce, and was charter president of the Ahoskie Lions Club. He also served the North Carolina Lions of District 31-J as secretary and deputy district governor. Mr. Pierce was a member of First Baptist Church of Ahoskie and its Radio Bible Class. He is survived by his wife of 61 ½ years, Garnette Barnes Pierce; one daughter, Judy Gray Pierce of the home; three sisters, Ola P. Barbour of Elon College, Llewella P. Mizelle of Colerain; and one grandchild. ALDINE E. SNIPES MENOLA - Aldine Early Snipes died February 15, 2005. She was born July 15, 1923, the sixth of seven children to Hershey C. and Geneva B. Early of Aulander, NC. She was born in the home and raised on the farm with her brothers and sisters. She went from there to East Carolina Teacher's College from which she graduated to begin a 38-year teaching career, during which she taught English, history, and French. She taught in the Bertie County, NC school system. Her many students now widely scattered still hold "Miss Aldine" in highest regard. In 1950, Aldine was married to Raleigh Thomas "Charlie" Snipes and from that time maintained a household in Menola. From her union with Charlie was born Amy Annette Snipes. Aldine is survived by her daughter, Amy Annette Snipes of Winton, NC; her beloved poodle, Maggie; brothers, Milton R. Early of Gloucester, VA and Reginald S. Early and wife Joyce of Virginia Beach, VA; brother-in-law, Robert Finley Snipes and wife Evelyn of Wilson, NC; sister-in-law, Maggie J. Early of Virginia Beach; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased for 32 years by her beloved husband, Charlie; sisters, Foy Mae Bazemore and Helen Peele; brothers, H.C. Early and Roy Early. SPELLER WINDSOR - Marvin Murray Speller, a native of Bertie County, died February 15, 2005. Mr. Speller was the son of Clara Speller and the late Ervin Speller Jr. and was born January 21, 1943, the fifth of eight children. He was preceded in death by his father and only brother Ervin Jr. Marvin grew up in Windsor, spending is early years in Indian Woods, until his family moved to the Cedar Landing Community. He attended Bertie County public schools until his family moved to Brooklyn, NY in 1962. He later moved with his lifelong companion, the late Ms. Ornice Blanks to Meridian, Mississippi. Marvin became ill in September 2004 and in January 2005, expressed a desire to return home to North Carolina to visit his family. At an early age Marvin joined Indian Woods Missionary Baptist Church and on February 11, 2005, reinstated his membership. VIRGINIA BEACH VA - Harvey Kerr Slade Sr,, 71, passed away Feb. 22 2005 after a lengthy illness in the hospital. He was a native of Aulander, NC and the son of the late Goden and Elizabeth Slade. Mr. Slade served in the US Air Force where he played football in the European theater and Omaha Mustangs. He was in the car business for 26 years and moved to Virginia Beach to semi retire and purchased Pine Tree Inn. In 1978, he sold the restaurant and purchased Seashore Bike Shop where he and his wife were an integral part of the community. He is survived by his beloved wife of 32 years, Janie D. Slade; five children, Chip Slade, Colleen and husband Eric Messick, Kevin Dugan, Kathleen and husband Reed Plate, Dre and wife Carrie Dugan; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille Hughes Pierce; brothers, Roy Pierce, Tommy Pierce, Ed Pierce, and Billy Pierce; two infant brothers; and half brother, Clyde Outlaw. Surviving are a daughter, Mary P. Williams and husband Harvey of Edenton; two sons, Robert G. Pierce and wife Iris of Merry Hill and Elbert F. Pierce and wife Mary Ellen of Edenton; a sister, Ruby Hughes of Edenton; nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. BRACY CHESAPEAKE VA - Sallie Mary Tyler Bracy, 71, of Fontana Ave., passed away February 25, 2005, in Chesapeake General Hospital. Mrs. Bracy was born April 15, 1933, in Roxobel, NC, a daughter of the late Walter Whitmal and Mary Cordelia Lassiter Tyler. She was a homemaker and an avid reader. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and aunt who loved her family and children. She is survived by her daughter, Jami Carol Bracy of Chesapeake; her son and daughter-in-law, Jack Edward and Teresa Bracy of Chesapeake; her sister-in-law, Marie S. Tyler of Elizabeth City, NC; two grandchildren, Jacob Tyler Bracy and Emily Rose Bracy; two nieces; two nephews; and 10 great-nieces and great- nephews. WHITE ASKEWVILLE - Phillip Spencer White, 81, of 107 Askewville-Evans Street, died Sunday, February 27, 2005 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital. Mr. White was born in Bertie County on September 30, 1923 to the late Shelton and Henrietta Harden White and was predeceased by a son, Kirt White. He was a member of Askewville Baptist Church and Charity Lodge #5. Phillip was a farmer and for 29 years the owner of Phillip White's Grocery. He served in the Army during World War II. Burial will be in Spring Hill Church Cemetery, Lewiston. JAMES EDWARD GILLIAM James Edward Gilliam, 73, of Washington, NC, died Monday, February 28, 2005 at Beaufort County Hospital in Washington. A funeral service was conducted at 12:00 noon on Friday, March 4, 2005 at Mount Calvary Free Will Baptist Church, Greenville, NC with Bishop Henry Brown Sr. officiating. Burial followed at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Washington. Mr. Gilliam was born November 18, 1931 in Bertie County. He was the son of the late Pearl Gilliam and Bryant Gilliam. He attended public schools of Bertie County. His employment was as a truck driver with the NC Department of Transportation. In Windsor, he was a member of Sandy Point Baptist Church. He later became a member of Mount Calvary Free Will Baptist Church in Greenville. He was first married to Gladys Cherry Gilliam. He was later married to Ella Mae Freeman Gilliam who preceded him in death. He is survived by his four daughters, Nellie Grandy of Windsor, Sharon Spencer of Washington, Barbara Lawrence and Sebrena Sharpe, both of Greenville, one son, Larry Gilliam of Richmond, two sisters, Helen Wesson of the home and Mary Rascoe of Windsor; two brothers, Earl Gilliam and Roy Gilliam, both of Windsor; eighteen grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren. Arrangements were by Randolph Funeral Home, 219 North Bonner Street, Washington, NC HOWARD GLENN BUNCH Howard Glenn Bunch, son of Pearl Bunch and the late Henry Bunch, was born on September 3, 1957 in Windsor, North Carolina. He was the third child of five children. Howard was reared in the Washington Metropolitan area and was educated in the District of Columbia Public School System; in addition he was trained and employed in a variety of vocational skills such as carpentry, electrical and plumbing. Howard married Tina Dickerson in the summer of 1998. He was baptized at an early age at New Canaan Baptist Church. Howard had a special passion for writing, especially poems. Howard was a peaceful and humble man who had a loving and giving heart. His family was most important to him. Cherishing his memory are his loving mother Pearl Bunch, two brothers, Henry Bunch and Reginald bunch, two sisters, Veronica Bunch, who preceded him in death, and Vernita Holifield, four nieces, four nephews, aunts, uncles, and a host of other relatives and friends.
