The Star

Died on the 27th ult. at his residence in Bertie, Doctor Samuel Garland, 
formerly of this city. Dr. G. has left an amiable young widow and an infant 
child to bewail a loss irreparable to them with many friends and acquantances 
who will long cherish the recollection of his virtures and genius. He was a 
native of Virginia, a medical pupil of Dr. Lucas and a graduate under Dr. 
Rush. His practice, for two or three years in which he resided at Raleigh, 
justified the expectations of his friends. But a tedious and dangerous malady 
attached him in the midst of his usefulness and at length drove him into 
retirement. There he was speedily called upon to close a life, which was spent 
by him in qualifying himself to ward off the blow from others and in 
sustaining with reputation and general respect, those social relations which 
belong to humanity.
