Mr. Howard, a Bertie County, N.C. native, had retired as a machinist with Champion International Paper Co. after 38 years. He was member of Beaver Dam Baptist Church and an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Blackwater Hunt Club and Franklin Moose Lodge 1573. Survivors include his wife, Irma Bryant Howard; a daughter, Nancy Lynn Howard of Franklin; two sisters, Edith H. Nicholson of Portsmouth and Ruth H. Meade of Franklin; and two brothers, Vernon D. Howard of Appomattox, and Lacy A. Howard of Franklin. A graveside service was conducted Wednesday in Southampton Memorial Park by the Rev. Richard L. Peerey. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society. Wright Funeral Home handled arrangements.
