He was born on February 26, 1944 to the late Bettie and Charlie Bazemore in Windsor, NC. He was the baby of ten children, fondly known as “Buddy” or “Wy” and “Wyoming Kid”. He was educated in Bertie County Public Schools. At an early age he became a member of Cedar Fork Church of God in Christ, currently known as Bazemore Temple Church of God in Christ. After graduating high school, Wyoming relocated to New York where he met and later married Mary Ann Getter. To this union, two children were born. A funeral was conducted Tuesday at Bazemore Temple Church of God in Christ by Elder Maurice Davenport Sr. Burial was in the Bazemore family cemetery. Cherry’s Funeral Home was in charge. Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann Bazemore; three sons; David, Anthony Wyoming Sr. and Kevin Wyoming; four brothers, Charlie Jr., Herbert, Roosevelt and Joseph; three sisters, Queen, Marie and Foseva; and 10 grandchildren. GERALDINE P. SIMMONS AHOSKIE – Geraldine Perry Simmons, 51, a native of Bertie County, died July 2, 2005 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital. A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, Harrellsville, by the Rev. Timothy Brassell. Burial will be in the Perry family cemetery, Harrellsville. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge. Survivors include her husband, Louis Earl Simmons of Ahoskie; children, Timothy Lamont Cherry of Atlanta, GA, and James O’Neal Cherry of Kinston; her mother, Mary Winborne Perry of Harrellsville; four sisters, Peggy Winston of Hampton, VA., Mary Moore of Ahoskie, Frances Leary of Merry Hill and Joaney Perry of Richmond; and a brother, Benjamin F. Perry Jr. of Hampton. SHIRLEY P. “CUTT” BROWN COLERAIN – Shirley Poe “Cutt” Brown, 76, of the 700 block of NC Highway 42, died Sunday, July 3, 2005, in his home. Mr. Brown was born in Bertie County, a son of the late, Thomas C. and Nannie Virginia Miller Brown, and was a member of Mars Hill Baptist Church. He was a retired farmer and served eight years with the North Carolina National Guard. He was a member of the Board of Directors of Centura Bank in Colerain, Martin Community College in Williamston; a member of the Trap Fire Department and served for 20 years as the Compliance Supervisor for Bertie and Hertford County Agriculture, Stabilization and Conservation Service. “Cutt” is survived by his wife, Nita Parker Brown; daughters, Virginia Brown Greene and husband, William of Ahoskie, Shirley Brown Clark and husband, Jason of Woodland; a son, Charles Thomas Brown and wife, Teresa of Virginia Beach, VA; brothers, Ollie Miller Brown of Ahoskie, Stanley Wilson Brown of Columbia, SC; grandchildren, Tonia Miller, Lauren Goodwin, Nathaniel Brown, Gabriel May, Eve Greene, Logan Clark and Emma Kate Clark and great-grandchildren, Dylan and Deanna Miller and Caroline Goodwin. He was predeceased by sisters, Agnes McLemore, Annie Mae White, Louise Fortune and Sarah Penny and brothers, Louis Ray Brown and Bennie C. Brown. BUSH AULANDER – James Lee Bush, a native of Lewiston, died July 4, 2005. He was the widower of Bessie Burden Bush. He was born on January 29, 1934 to Archie and Maggie Bush of Lewiston, NC. Bush was retired from Perdue Farms and Town of Windsor. He was a member of Conoconary Baptist Church. BEULAH SPIVEY AULANDER – Beulah Donna Norfleet Spivey, 53, a native of Bertie County, died July 4, 2005 at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville. She was born on December 15, 1951 in Bertie County. DUNLOW WINDSOR – Rassie Willis Dunlow, 78, of US 13 North, died July 4, 2005 in his home. Mr. Dunlow was born in Bertie County, a son of the late Rassie and Chester Leary Dunlow and attended Bethel Assembly of God Church. Rassie was an army veteran of World War II and was retired as an auto body repairman. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, a lover of music and a talented musician. Survivors include his wife, Thelma Griggs-Dunlow; daughters, Brenda D. Jones and husband Steve and Spring D. A native of Bertie County, NC, she was the daughter of the late Raymond V. Todd and Olia Tillery Todd Vaughan. Surviving are a sister, Catherine Clinedinst and brother, William E. She was born in Bertie County on October 19, 1923. She was a member of Weeping Mary Baptist Church of Lewiston, NC. WILLIAM BAZEMORE SR. BROOKLYN, NY – William Earl Bazemore Sr., 62, a native of Bertie County, died July 7, 2005. He was born April 24, 1943 in Bertie County. Ralph was born August 9,1929, in Windsor, NC, a son of the late Edward Lee and Martha Amelia Speller Swain. He worked for Camellia Foods as a tire mechanic. He loved the game of baseball, coaching when his children were young and watching games on television in his later years. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Ralph is survived by his wife of 57 years, Ruth Wilson Swain; two daughters, Amelia Swain Goffigan and husband Rufus and Dianne Swain Edwards, both of Virginia Beach; three grandchildren, Sean James McCoy, Tiffany ReNique` Goffigan and Keith Brandon Goffigan; one great-granddaughter Amari London McCoy, and a host of relatives and friends. Mrs. Sary was born on April 24, 1918, to the late James and Bessie Perry Baker. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Walker Funeral Chapel, Windsor, by the Rev. Chris Lee. BRADLEY NORFOLK - Eunice Odell Bradley, 100, of Tarpon Place, passed away peacefully July 12, 2005, in her residence. Born in Bertie County, NC, she was the daughter of the late Starkey and Mammie Doughtie and was widowed by her husband of 45 years, William B. Bradley Sr. Mrs. Bradley, “NuNu”, as her family knew her, just celebrated her 100th birthday June 10, 2005. As a homemaker all of her life, she was a godly woman who put God first in everything. Mrs. Bradley cared for many people in her lifetime and was the last of 16 brothers and sisters. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her. Survivors include three stepsons, Arthur Bradley of Suffolk, Cecil Bradley and Ralph Bradley, both of Florida. She also leaves a host of grandchildren, great- grandchildren, nieces, nephews, great nieces and –nephews. Steve Tayloe Sr., 61 died at Roanoke Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie, NC, July 13, 2005. Mr. Tayloe was born and raised in Aulander. He graduated from Aulander High School and attended North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC. He returned to Aulander and continued farming with his family. He was married to Gail Wood in 1962 and raised three wonderful children. Steve has a great love and concern for all people. He showed this so wonderfully in the auto industry. All who knew him noticed his kindness and generosity. He has a great love for his wife, his children and grandchildren. His passion for the beach and fishing were a very important part of his as well. Preceding him in death were his mother, Hallie Rae Peele Tayloe and his father, Frank Raymond Tayloe. Survivors include his wife, Gail W. Tayloe of the home; two daughters, Dawne T. Hendrix and her husband Chris of Greenville, NC, and Mary M. Tayloe of Greenville, NC; one son, Ricky Tayloe and his wife Susan of Orlando, FL.; one brother, Ralph P. Tayloe and his wife Rachel of Franklin; and his mother-in- law, Margaret Wood. MIZELLE AHOSKIE- Nina Leigh White Mizelle, 77, died July 18, 2005, in Roanoke Chowan Hospital. Mrs. Mizelle was born in Askewville, Bertie County, NC. She retired from Belks with more than 25 years of service. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Ahoskie, where she served as a Sunday School teacher in the nursery for more than 30 years. She served as a volunteer for the Roanoke-Chowan Hospice. She received the Jack Stickley Fellow Award for Dedicated Humanitarian Services from the North Carolina Lions Foundation for 1998-1999, the Distinguished Service Award/Community Service Award from the Hertford County Council for Women for Dedicated and Loyal Services Rendered to the Citizens of Hertford County in 1998, and was named a “Woman of the Century” by Women of the Century and Women’s History Month in 1999. Mrs. Mizelle was the wife of the late Jesse C. Mizelle and sister to the late Julian White formerly of Askewville, Claxton White formerly of Chesapeake, Brinkley White formerly of Powellsville and John W. “Willie” White formerly of Askewville. Survivors include one daughter, Charlotte Mizelle and husband Sid Lawrence of Cary, NC; and one son, Doug Mizelle and wife Judy; a granddaughter, Jessi Mary- Lou of Ahoskie; and one sister, Faye White Bowen and husband Claude of Huntersville, NC. EMMA PUGH WINDSOR - Emma Pugh, 100, of the 100 block of Cooper Hill Road and a native of Windsor, died July 18, 2005. She was the widow of James “Foot” Pugh. She was the daughter of the late Ernest and Mary Elizabeth Greene and was born on June 3, 1904 in Windsor, NC. Emma attended Bertie County public schools. During the early years of her life, she joined Cedar Landing Missionary Baptist Church. She served as a member of the Young at Heart Club, the Missionary Ministry, the Helping Hand Ministry and the Senior Choir. She also served as Secretary of the Deaconess Ministry and was a Pastor’s Aide member. A funeral will be held on Saturday at 3 p.m. in Cedar Landing Baptist Church by the Rev. Shelton R Barnes. JOHN RASCOE JR Mr. John P. Rascoe Jr, 53, of Greensboro, died quietly on Monday, July 18, 2005 at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital after a courageous two year battle with brain cancer. A funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, July 22, 2005 at Woods Baptist Church in Windsor, NC. Burial followed in the church cemetery. John was born in Windsor, NC on May 5, 1952. John graduated from Bertie Senior High School and attended Elon University where he played football and graduated cum laude in 1974. He worked for the city of Greensboro for the past 20 years and retired as Collections Manager in February of 2004. John was an avid hunter and enjoyed spending vacations hunting and fishing near his birthplace in eastern North Carolina. John is survived by his wife Shirley Rascoe, daughters, Kelley and Carla Rascoe all of Greensboro. He is also survived by his parents John and Donna Rascoe, his five younger siblings, Vickie McGhee, Keith Rascoe, Deborah Rascoe, Carol Rascoe, and Donna Rascoe, three nephews and three nieces. She was the widow of Glover C. Bass Sr. Mrs. Bass retired from the Naval Regional Medical Center after 26 years. She was a member of Third Baptist Church, Portsmouth, where she was involved with the Loyal Workers Club and Feed The Hungry. Survivors include three daughters, Dorothy C. Oliver, Ruth C. Johnson and Delores B. Oliver; a son, Melvin E. Bass, 13 grandchildren; 19 great- grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. LEWISTON-WOODVILLE – Walter T. “Pete” Jernigan Sr., 71, a native of Bertie County, died July 22, 2005 at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville. A native of Aulander, she attended Meredith College and graduated form Mercer College in Macon, Georgia. She worked with the Bertie County Department of Social Services and later as a probation officer in Hertford County. She was a member of Aulander Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Hufham Watson Early and Blanche Godsey Early, her brothers, James Godsey Early, Harold McNeill Early, and Hufham Watson Early, Jr., and her nephews, Harold McNeill Early Jr. and James Godsey Early II. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Toni Early of Greenwood, SC, nieces and nephews, Chris and Jim Wiggs of Rocky Mount, Ann Early, Randy and Karen Early, all of Aulander, and Cora Early of Lewiston-Woodville, and by great nieces and nephews, Andy Wiggs, Harriett Early, Carol Early and Alden Early.
