A native of Aulander, NC, he retired as the superintendent of Buildings and Grounds at Tidewater Community College. Mr. Burden was a member of Westhaven Baptist Church and an Army Veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife, Verlie H. Burden; a daughter, Vicki A. Burden and husband Richard C. Lester of Virginia Beach; two grandchildren, Courtney Allen of Chesapeake and Travis Lester of Kill Devil Hills, NC; and two great-grandchildren, Connor and Spencer Allen. A funeral will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Bennett's Creek Chapel, by the Revs. Tom Wood, Tim Dixon and Don Sheffield. Entombment will be in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. CULLIPHER MERRY HILL - Merlin Vance Cullipher, 51, of NC 45 North, died Saturday, Jan 1, 2005, at Chowan Hospital, Edenton. Mr. Cullipher was born in Hertford County and was the son of Alice Riddick Cullipher of Merry Hill and the late Milton Vance Cullipher. A mail carrier for the US Postal Service with 21 years of service he was also a farmer. Mr. Cullipher was a member, deacon, and choir member at Riverside Baptist Church. In addition to his mother he is survived by his brother, Jack Cullipher an wife Betty of Columbia, SC; three nieces, Mary Daniels and husband Mark of Colerain, Martha Kirby and husband Don of Union, KY, and Elizabeth Pollard and husband J.B. of Falmouth, KY; a nephew, Jimmy Cullipher and wife Dreama of Creedmoor, NC; four great nieces, three great nephews, and many extended family members. Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 6, 2005 at 11 a.m. in Riverside Baptist Church by the Rev. Al Jarrell. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery in Colerain with Miller Funeral Home of Edenton handling arrangements. Friends may join the family at the residence. VERNICE VINSON AULANDER - Vernice "Vernie" Vinson, of Aulander, died January 1, 2005, at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville. WHITE ASKEWVILLE - Myrtle Thompson White, 75, a native of Bertie County, died January 2, 2005. Mrs. White was born to the late Luther and Gertrude Jernigan Thompson. She was the widow of Herman F. White. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday by the Rev. R.O. Denton Jr. Memorial gifts may be made to either the Bertie County Rescue Squad or to the Askewville Fire Department. Survivors include a son, Martin White; a daughter, Shellie Mitchell; a sister, Page Smirk, all of Windsor; one grandchild and one great-grandchild. JOE R. WARD SR. NORFOLK - Joe Randolph Ward Sr., 79, of the 4500 block of Colonial Ave., passed away Jan. 2, 2005, at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. He was born April 1, 1925, in Bertie County, N.C., and was educated in the Hertford County Public School System, N.C. He retired from Consolidated Freight Line in 1982 after 22 years, where he was a foreman/team master. He was entrepreneur for Wards Lawn Service. Joe was a member of New Hope COGIC where he served as a deacon. He was previously a member of Mason Memorial COGIC where he served as an usher and deacon. He also served as a Red Cross volunteer (1982-2002) and Team Master Local Union No. 22. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Hattie Morris Ward; one daughter, Jo Ann Ward Obie of Gainesville, Va.; six sons, Larry Junior Ward, Randy Ward, Chester Lee Ward, Kelvin Eugene Ward, Steven Ward and Joseph Anthony Ward, all of Norfolk; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at New Hope COGIC, 3232 Brest Ave., Elder Calvin Durham officiating. Interment will be at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, Norfolk. RAWLS WOODLAND - Marie Conner Rawls, 84, a native of Bertie County, died January 2, 2005 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie. Mrs. Rawls was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband, Fred S. Rawls of the home; and a sister, Viva Hoffman of Currituck. WILLIAM J. JILLCOTT ROXOBEL - Robert William "Bill" Jillcott, a native of Roxobel, died January 2, 2005. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday by Dr. David Rimel. Burial will be in Roxobel Kelford Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Sykes Funeral Service from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Jillcott was a veteran of the US Army. He was a member and served as a deacon on two occasions at Sandy Run Baptist Church. Survivors include his sister Frances Jillcott Benson; a nephew and two nieces. EDWARD L. WOMBLE RICH SQUARE - Edward Lee Womble, age 86, devoted husband, father, and grandfather, died Sunday, January 2, 2005 at Roanoke Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie. A native of Bertie County he was born January 12, 1918. He was the son of the late Irving Cree Womble and Ivie Lee Shoulars Womble. He was retired from the United States Postal Service after thirty-four years of service, during which he was postmaster at the Rich Square Post Office for 20 years and Postmaster of the Year for Northhampton County. A member of the Rich Square Baptist Church, he served as a member of the board of deacons. He was a member of the Rich Square Lions Club, Rich Square Rotary Club, and the American Legion. Mr. Womble served his country during World War II as a member of the United States Army and was part of the US occupation forces in the Philippines. Survivors include his wife of fifty-two years, Margaret Martin Womble; a daughter, Mary Lee Bailey and husband Jeff of Durham; two sons, Edward Franklin Womble and wife Gloria of Suffolk, Va., and Wayne Lewis Womble and wife Sylvia of Raleigh; and two grandsons, Edward Bradley Bailey of Greensboro and Matthew Charles Bailey of Durham. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, January 5, 2005 at 2 p.m. at the Rich Square Baptist Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Bob Rogers. MARY L. HOLDER MERRY HILL - Mary Louis Holder, 99, of the 1300 block of NC 45 North, died Jan. 4, 2005, in her home. Mrs. Holder was born in Bertie County and was the daughter of the late James B. and Mary Britt Cullipher. She was a homemaker, a member of Riverside Baptist Church and would have celebrated her 100th birthday on Jan. 20, 2005. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Ira Holder, who was a veteran of World War I; a sister, Edith Aldridge; and brothers, Edwin, Roger and Milton Cullipher. Surviving are a daughter, Elaine H. Taylor of Merry Hill; granddaughters, Patsy McCulley, Sandy Douglas, Emmie Taylor and Cherry Ann Shuey; and six great-grandchildren. ELWYN THOMPSON Mr. Elwyn B. Thompson, 80, of Walkertown, died Thursday, January 6, 2005 at his home. Mr. Thompson was born February 18, 1924 in Bertie County, NC to William Luther and Beulah Mae Cobb Thompson. He was the owner and manager of grocery stores in both Morehead City and Grifton, NC. He was a member of Bethany Baptist Church. Mr. Thompson is survived by his wife, Arlene Smith Thompson, of the home, two daughters, Sylvia Bell Bridges and husband Guy of Winston Salem and Dianna Carter and husband Bob of High Point, one son, Elwyn B. (Tommy) Thompson, Jr. and wife Jane S. of Winston Salem; six grandchildren, Elwyn B. Thompson III, Michael Thompson, Brian Carter, Gayle Carter, Katherine Bell McCorkle, and Tim W. PORTLAND, Conn. - Benjamin Franklin "BJ" Flood Sr., 66, of Portland, Connecticut died Jan. 7, 2005 in Portland Care Rehabilitation Center. He was born January 26, 1938 in Bertie County. He was a retired laborer of Perma Tree Corp. in Durham, NC and a member of Piney Woods Chapel Baptist Church. He is survived by his sons, Benjamin Flood Jr. of New York and Stanley Flood of Williamsburg, VA, his daughters, Nika Lynch of New York and Becky Flood of Florida, his brothers, William Flood of New Haven, Connecticut, Thomas Flood of Middletown, Connecticut, Joseph Paul Flood of Newport News, Va and Lonnie Flood of Greensboro, NC, his sisters, Mildred Turner of Lewiston, Dorothy Pugh, Carolyn Sharpe, and Mattie Mae Moore, all of Colerain, and Tonetta West Dove of Raleigh, and one grandchild, David Lynch of New York. EVELYN M OTT VIRGINIA BEACH - Evelyn Mitchell Ott, formerly of the 7300 block of Glenroie Ave, Norfolk, passed away January 8, 2005. She was born in Aulander, NC, to the late William Gordon Mitchell and Evelyn Dunning Mitchell. She was raised by her mother and stepfather, Vivian L. Ott, after her father died when she was very young. She was also predeceased by her husband of more than 30 years, Robert Pully. Evelyn founded the Evelyn Ott School of Dance in 1940 and worked there until her retirement in 1980. She was a lifetime member of the Dance Masters of America; a lifetime member of the Dance Educators of America; a member of the Sarah Constant Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Tidewater Daughters of the American Revolution Regents Club; a member of the Virginia Symphony League; and a former board member of the Algonquin House. She is survived by a niece, Denise Ott Land of Norfolk; a nephew Daniel L. Ott and wife Sandra of Norfolk; a great nephew, Ryan C. Land of Norfolk; and many close friends to include the "Knit Wit" group. A funeral will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Epworth United Methodist Church in Norfolk, with the Rev. MADELINE GILLIAM CHERRY WINDSOR - Madeline Gilliam Cherry, a native of Bertie County, was called to do a better service for God on January 11, 2005. She was born on July 4, 1935 to the late Bessie Eva Gilliam and George L. Cooper, Sr. of Bertie County, Windsor, NC Madeline was a wonderful wife and loving mother, sister, grandmother, and friend. She made and kept many friends during her stay here. She was kind and generous to all who knew her. She attended the public schools of Bertie County. At an early age she joint St. Elmo Missionary Baptist Church and remained a faithful member until her health began to decline. Mrs. Cherry was a dedicated member of the Deaconess Board, Missionary Circle, Usher Board and Church Secretary. Madeline was united in holy marriage to Augustus L. Cherry. To this union, four children were born - two sons and two daughters. Survivors include her husband, Augustus Lindbergh; two sons, Melvin of Portsmouth, Va., and Darrell of Lewiston; two daughters, Myra of Raleigh and Robbins of the home; seven brothers, Melvin Gilliam of Windsor, Johnnie Lee of Pleasantville, NJ, Hubert Cooper and Herbert Cooper, both of Windsor, Earl Cooper and Pete Cooper of Edenton and Bennie Cooper of Arvonia, Va.; two sisters, Irene Phelps of Edenton and Laura Mae Logan of Baltimore, Md.; and five grandchildren A funeral was conducted Saturday at St. Elmo Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. HOLLOMAN RODUCO - Joseph Hilton Holloman, 77, of the 1400 block of Hwy. 158, died Jan. 12, 2005, in his home. Mr. Holloman was born in Bertie County, N.C., and was the son of the late Vernon Holloman and Addie Miller Holloman Davis. A retired machinist from Franklin Equipment Company, he was a member of Eure Christian Church, the White Oak Hunt Club and Ray's Beach Fishing Club. Mr. Holloman served in the U.S. Army. Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Beulah Phelps Holloman; three daughters, Reba H. Bailey and husband Glenn of Fountain, N.C., Becky H. Edwards and husband John of Gates and Rose H. Jarman and husband David of Smithfield, N.C.; two sons, Jimmie R. Holloman and wife Dianne and Ernie B. FREEMAN PRINCETON, N.J. - Archie Bertrum "Pop" Freeman, a native of Colerain, died January 17, 2005 at Merwick Rehab Hospital & Nursing Care Facility in Princeton. He was the widower of Dorothy Sloan Freeman. Freeman retired from the USPHS in 1969 after 30 years of service, and returned to Princeton to live, he then worked for the NJ State Department of Health until 1974, when he permanently retired. Survivors include two sons, Archie B. Jr. of West Trenton and John Freeman of Charlottesville Va., two brothers, Olney Ray Freeman of Wake Forest and Donald Norman Freeman of Raleigh; two grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 am, Friday at the Niles Chapel of Nassau Presbyterian Church, 61 Nassau Street, Princeton NJ. Interment in Princeton Cemetery is private. CONWAY - Mr. Clyde Robert Davidson, Jr., age 57, of Hwy. 158, Conway, NC, died January 17, 2005 at his home. Mr. Davidson was born August 30, 1947 in Bertie County, NC, the son of the late Clyde Robert Davidson Sr. and Lois Cobb Davidson. He was a correctional officer with the State of Virginia. Survivors include his brothers, Michael Davidson and his wife, Mary Ann Bonnano of Conway, NC, Gerald Davidson of Ahoskie, NC, and Brad Davidson of Minnesota; his niece Amy and his nephews, Wood, Paul and Jason. WILLIAM P. BARNES AHOSKIE - William Perry Barnes, 79, a native of Bertie County, died January 19, 2005 in Roanoke Chowan Hospital. ANNE T. HOLLEY GREENVILLE - Anne Tynes Holley, recently of Greenville, died on Sunday, January 23, 2005 at the age of 84. Mrs. Holley was born and raised in Kelford, making Colerain her home following her marriage to Thomas Holley in 1943. She was a homemaker and a "farmer's wife" who enjoyed long distance travel as well as jaunts all over Bertie and adjacent counties. She was a member of Colerain United Methodist Church and also attended Colerain Baptist Church before moving to Greenville in 1998. She was active in her community through the United Methodist Women, the Colerain Civic Club, and the Order of the Eastern Star. She was also a volunteer with the local hospice. Her father and mother, Ernest Earl and Jennie Cobb Tynes, a brother, Earl Tynes, a sister, Mamie Tynes Roane, and her husband of 61 years, Thomas Holley, precede her in death. Surviving her is a brother, Charles H. Tynes and wife Jimmie Joy, of Marietta, GA; a son, David Holley and wife, Kathy, of Meridian, ID; three daughters, Theresa Holley of Greenville, Anita Holley of Boise, ID, and Margaret Holley Farmer and husband Gerald of Greenville; a nephew, Robert Shield Holley, Jr., of Big Fork, MT; a niece, Joy Lynn Tynes, of Marietta, GA; and four grandchildren, Luke and Seth Holley of Boise, ID and Ashley and John Worthington of Greenville. GRIFFIN NORFOLK - Eula W. Griffin of the 1400 block of Halstead Ave., died January 24, 2005, in Autumn Care. A native of Bertie County, NC, she retired from the Naval base as a cook and was a member of New Horizon Outreach Ministries. LEWISTON - John W. Powell Jr., 87, of the 300 block of Hwy. 11, died January 25, 2005 at Three Rivers Nursing Home, Windsor. He was born to the late John Willis Sr. and Estella Powell in Bertie County. He was a devoted family man who always tried to help others in need. During his life, John Powell was a sharecropper and a logger. He was predeceased by his daughter, Bertha Watkins, his sister, Lucy Ann Cherry, his brothers, Lincoln Aaron, Sr., Zionah, Paul, and George. White was a graduate of the University of Richmond and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He pastured Baptist churches in North Carolina, Texas, and Virginia, including Highland Baptist Church in Hickory, First Baptist Church of Spindale, and First Baptist Church of Clayton. He served as a trustee of Gardner-Webb University, and served for 18 years on the staff of Baptist State Convention of North Carolina in the field of Stewardship education and promotion. Survivors include his wife, Sue Minton White of the home; two sons, Harold M. White, Jr. of Pensacola, Fla., and Mark T. White of Garner; two sisters, Elizabeth Williams of Greenville, SC, and Whit Montague of Windsor; and two grandchildren. Services were held at First Baptist Church of Clayton on Wednesday.
