HOGGARD J.V. HOGGARD, JR, 65, of Aulander, died Sunday, June 29, 2003 at Roanoke Chowan Hospital. Mr. Hoggard was born in Bertie County, September 8, 1937, a son of the late Jesse Vernon Hoggard and Rachel Bazemore Hoggard. Prior to his retirement, he owned and operated Hoggard Super Market in Aulander for 45 years. He was a member and former treasurer an deacon at Aulander Baptist Church and had served as mayor and town council member, in Aulander. Surviving are, his wife, Janet Britton Hoggard, daughter, Angie Hoggard Draper, sons, Jeffrey Vernon Hoggard and Christopher A. Hoggard, all of Aulander, grandsons, Rick Draper, Steven Draper Jr., Ryan Draper and Ben Draper; sister, Brenda Hoggard Smiwick and husband Kenneth Smiwick, of Lake Royale, NC. He was preceded in death by a sister, Becky Hoggard Farrencopf. Funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 2, 2003 at Aulander Baptist Church, with the Reverend Robbie Parker and the Reverend Dow Welsh, officiating. Interment will be in Aulander Cemetery. The family received friends from 7;00 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, at Garrett Funeral Home, in Ahoskie and at other times at the residence. Garrett Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. WILLIAM T. SANDERLIN Mr. William Thomas Sanderlin, 86, of Stone Mountain, Ga., and formerly of Windsor, died Tuesday, July 1, 2003 at VA Atlanta Medical Hospital. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in Edgewood Cemetery with the Rev. Clifton Dunning officiating. Mr. Sanderlin was married to Patricia Woods Sanderlin, who survives. He served in the Army during World War II. He retired as a millwright from Weyerhaeuser Co. He was a member of Greens Cross Baptist Church. Survivors include three daughters, Gayle S. Russell and Joy S. Demofonte, both of Windsor, and Jean S. Sapp of Southport, Fla.; three sons, Russell Sanderlin of Charlotte, Larry Sanderlin of Windsor and Wayne Sanderlin of Edenton; two stepsons, Bobby Woods of Atlanta, Ga., and Billy Woods of Vidalia, Ga.; four sisters, Ruth Williams of Atlanta, Ga., Hattie White of Windsor, Sue Whitaker of St. Louis, Mo., and Thelma Matthews of Kempsville, Va.; 17 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. PIERCE POWELLSVILLE - Elma Holloman Pierce, 85, died July 2, 2003, at Roanoke Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie. Mrs. Pierce was born Feb. 12, 1918 in Bertie County, NC, the daughter of the late Cling Holloman and Essie Conner Holloman. Her first husband, George T. Jernigan Sr. and her second husband Mack Pierce, and a brother, Bruce Holloman also preceded her in death. She was a lifetime member of Powellsville Baptist Church and had retired for Pinewood Manor in Ahoskie. Survivors include her daughters, Martha Jernigan and husband Don of Tyner, NC., Gail Jernigan and husband, Everette of Colerain, NC., Linda Cartwright and husband, Ray of Belvidere, NC, Judy Mizell and husband Lin of Powellsville; her sons, George T. Jernigan Jr., and wife Sue, Richard H. Jernigan and wife, Julia,, all of Franklin, and Gene W. Jernigan and wife Nancy of Murfreesboro, NC, and Steve Jernigan and wife, Linda of Winton, NC; her brother, J.C. Holloman of Powellsville; and her sister, Faye Hoggard of Chesapeake; her step-children, Jimmy, Joe, and Charlie Mack Pierce and Faye Eure; 20 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren. Mrs. Robertson was born July 11, 1928 in Hertford County, NC. She passed away July 2, 2003 at the Brian Center in Windsor. She will be remembered for her genuine love of family and friends. TERRY AULANDER - Herbert Lee Terry, 85, died July 3, 2003, at his home. Mr. Terry was born Oct. 12, 1917, in Hertford County, NC, the son of the late William J. Terry and Elsie Farmer Terry. He was also predeceased by his wife, Ella Bradley Terry and several brothers and sisters. Survivors include two daughters, Shirley A. Hammonds of Norfolk, and Anita T. MEBANE WINDSOR - Clarine Cooper Mebane, 98, of Woodland Road, passed away quietly with family by her side July 3, 2003. She was predeceased by her husband, Simon L. WOMMACK CHESAPEAKE - Ida Estelle Wommack, 92, formerly of Waterfield Ave, joined her family and the Lord in heaven, Friday, July 4, 2003 in Chesapeake. Born in Colerain, NC, Feb 4, 1911, she was the daughter of the late George T. and Lucy Adell Jernnigan and was predeceased by her husband, Cecil D. Wommack. She was a member of the DeBaun Baptist Church and was active with the South Norfolk Seniors. Ida was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She is survived by two sons, Durvin Wommack and wife Margaret of Chesapeake and Alton Wommack and wife Barbara of Mechanicsville, Va; four grandchildren, Katherine Wommack Winslow and husband Bennie, Carolyn E. Wommack, Michael Wommack and wife Rachel and David Wommack and Fiancee Nicole; and two great- grandchildren, Jordan M. Winslow and Kirsten B. Winslow. A native of Baltimore, MD, she was the daughter of the late Frank Breaski and Tillie Kirhasit Breaski and the widow of Theodore Pine, Sr. Mrs Pine was a retitred seamtress. Survivors include her daughter, Frances Butts of Windsor; son, Theodore Pine Jr., of Glen Burnie, MD; a granddaughter and four grandsons; two greatgranddaughters and two great great granddaughters; and her sister, Frances Como of Baltimore. Cummings, of the 500 block of Avondale Road, died July 9, 2003 at Portsmouth Naval Hospital. A native of Windsor, NC, she was a member and deaconess of New Bethel Baptist Church, Portsmouth. She was first president of the Female Usher Board No. 2 and a member of many other organizations and activities at the church. LINDBERGH SMALLWOOD WINDSOR - Lindbergh Smallwood, 71, of the 1500 block of Indian Woods Road, died July 11, 2003. He was the son of the late Glossie and Estee Smallwood, and was born on May 2, 1932 in Bertie County. Lindbergh attended the public schools of Bertie County. He had several jobs, the last was with Lea Lumber Company, from which he retired. He was a member of the Spring Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Lewiston, NC. On December 15, 1951 he was united in marriage to Sadie M. Smallwood. Together they raised 15 children. One son Charles Smallwood and a brother and sister Bart and Georgia, all preceded him in death. Those left to cherish his memory include: his wife of fifty one years, Mrs. Sadie M. VIOLA B. BROWN AULANDER - Viola Bazemore Brown, 75, of Aulander died on July 12, 2003. She was born in Bertie County on January 1, 1928 to the late Pete Bazemore and Beatrice Cherry Bazemore, She was a homemaker. Viola was a member of Conocanary Baptist Church. VIRGINIA BEACH - Walter R. Brown Jr., 75, passed away on July 13, 2003. He was born in North Carolina to the late Walter R. Brown, Sr., and Mae Brown and was the widower of Irene Gelardi Brown. He was also predeceased by two grandchildren, Shawn William Doran and Diana C. Commander. Mr. Brown was a charter member of the St Gregory the Great Catholic Church. He retired from the Virginia Army National Guard and was a veteran of World War II. He also retired as an equipment specialist from NADEP in 1989. He was a member of the Masonic Temple, Norview Lodge No 113, AF&AM and the Khedive Temple where he was glockenspiel player for the Drum and Bugle Corps. He is survived by two daughters, Jane Cordovana and husband Nick of Chesapeake and Joyce Steele and husband Richard of Norfolk; four grandchildren, Marie Marant, Angela Davis, Nick Cordovana and James Cordovana; three great-grandchildren, Anthony, Joshua and Goku; a niece, Michelle Henderson and family, a nephew, Steve Henderson and family; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins in Gatesville County and Bertie County, NC. Mr. Joyner was born Sept 10, 1917 in Portsmouth and soon moved to Roxoble, NC with his parents, the late Percy Joyner and Ivy Dunning Joyner. For many years, he operated a dairy farm and then owned Rich Square Florist before his retirement. He was a member of the Sandy Run Baptist Church in Roxobel. Survivors include his wife of almost 55 years, Alverta Parker Joyner; a sister, Sophronia Barham of Mufreesboro, NC; a brother, Auvin Joyner, also of Mufreesboro and formerly of Pawling, NY; and many nieces and nephews. Mrs Morris was born Oct 1, 1932, in Martin County, NC the daugher of the late Joe John Scott and Cleman Scott Scott. She was a homemaker. Survivors include her husband, Sidney Ray Morris; a daughter, Joyce Mizelle Morris of Ahoskie; a son, Ernest Lee Mizelle of Williamston; her sisters, Dora Leicester of Waverly, Cindy Zeimet of Iowa and Ann Powell of Eure; her brothers, Jim Scott of Garysburg, Joe Scott Jr. of Aulander, Clyde Scott of Lewiston and George Scott of Woodbridge, VA; three grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. REBA MAE SYKES PORTSMOUTH VA - Reba Mae Sykes, 44, of the 100 block of Kirby St, was called home to be with the Lord on July 28, 2003 at Maryview Medical Center. A native of Bertie County, NC she was retired from Beverly Manor of Portsmouth after 17 years as a certified nurses assistant. Survivors include a daughter, Tonya, two sons, Christopher and Antoine; mother and father, Joan Standifer and Homer Standifer; and a host of other relatives, in-laws and friends. EMMETT WYNN BURDEN Emmett Wynn Burden of Raleigh passé away peacefully Wednesday morning, July 30, 2003, just four days after his 80th birthday, following several years of declining health and complications of Parkinson's diease. Emmett was born July 26, 1923 in Aulander, NC, the son of Marion Clyde and Belle Mitchell Burden. He studied business administration at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill until entering the USNR Midshipman School at Columbia University in New York in 1943. Upon graduation he was commissioned an Ensign in the United States Navy. He served with distinction in the Pacific Theater during World War II and was honored with a Presidential Citation for service in the first wave at Iwo Jima. He was one of the youngest skippers in the Navy, Commanding Officer LCI (G) 473, at the age of 21. In August 1946 he returned to his beloved hometown Aulander. Back in Aulander he operated his family's department store and farm holdings, established a general insurance business and real estate office. He organized the fire department and rescue squad (as well as rescue squads throughout eastern North Carolina), an served as fire chief, building inspector, and civil defense director. In 1963, he was elected to the North Carolina General Assembly and served in the House of Representatives until November 1967, when he accepted the position of Executive Director of the NC State Employees Association. He led the NCSEA until his retirement in 1984, with the association growing from 12,000 members and merging with the State Government Employees Association to create SEANC, the largest association of state employees in the country (44,000 members at the time). Emmett was married to Lila Sumrell Burden for 40 years, until her death in 1990. He was also predeceased by his parents. Surviving are his daughter, Kaye Wynn Burden Champion and husband Mark Champion; one son, Anthony Clyde (Tony) Burden and Barry Mangum; granddaughters Jamie, Melissa, and Michelle Champion; several nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews, cousins and many friends. Funeral Service will be held at Ridge Road Baptist Church, 2011 Ridge Road on Saturday, August 2, 2003, at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Murl Randolph Jarvis, 80, a resident of Winston Park Rest Home, died July 31, 2003 in Guardian Care of Elizabeth City. He was born in Beaufort County to the lare Edward and Gladiolus Norfleet Jarvis an was married to the late Rebecca Hill Jarvis. The Rev. Jarvis was a member of Askewville Assembly of God and very active in missions. He served in Africa an preached in many area churches. He was a member of the Bertie County Ministerial Association and was a WWII Navy veteran. He also served in the National Guard. He retired from the Norfolk Naval Base. Survivors include daughters, Cora J. Reid of Elizabeth City, Murrell McCulley of East Africa, Ida J. Finch of Mobile, Ala and Becky J. Hoggard of Windsor; sons, Leon Jarvis of Henderson, NC, Wayne Jarvis of Muskegon, Mich, Clifton Jarvis of Leland, NC and Timmy Jarvis of Springfield, MO.; stepdaughters, Sue Jarrett and Teresa Barnes, both of Windsor; sister, Doris J.
