She was the widow of James Austin Cherry. A funeral was conducted Saturday at Cedar Landing Baptist Church by the Rev. Shelton Barnes. Burial was in Hillcrest Cemetery. Gilliam Funeral Home was in charge. Survivors include seven children, Shirley of Philadelphia, PA, James of Iraq, Wallace, Russell and Barbara, all of Windsor, Ervin and Jane, both of the home; one sister Rachel, three brothers Ernest and Daniel, both of Philadelphia and Edward of Deleware; 16 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. JONES WINDSOR - Mary Gertrude Jones died July 1, 2004 at Three Rivers Health & Rehabilitation Center, Windsor. A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. Luke's Baptist Church, Windsor by the Rev. JAMES CAPEHART COLERAIN - James "Randy" Capehart, 54, of the 100 block of Meadow Road, died July 1, 2004. A funeral will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Greater Wynn's Grove Baptist Church. Wilder's Funeral Home, Aulander, is in charge. GEORGE LEWIS MARDRE IV George Lewis Mardre, IV, died Friday, July 2, 2004. He was born on November 23, 1931 to the late George L. Mardre III and Helen Roberson Mardre. He was predeceased by sister Helen Cowper and Betty Miller Cherry. George graduated from Windsor High School and then attended Fishburne Military Academy. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill after proudly serving in the AFROTC and Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity. After university, George served five years in the US Air Force and was stationed successfully at Donaldson Air Force Base in Greenville, SC, Burtonwood Air Force Base in Warrington, England, Munich, Germany, and Wiesbaden, Germany. Returning home to Windsor from military duty, George served as the Civil Defense Director for Bertie County. For forty-three years, George was a proud farmer. George is survived by his wife, Mary Jeannette Shaw and children and grandchildren: son, George Lewis Mardre V, his wife Hope Brown Mardre and their children of Alabama; daughter, Mary Jeannette Moseley, her husband Theodore O. Moseley, III and their children of Kill Devil Hills, NC; daughter, Barrett Roberson Mardre of Durham, NC; sister, Harriett Mardre Woolard and her husband, John Hyman Woolard and ten nieces and nephews. The funeral was held on Monday, July 5, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at St.Thomas Episcopal Church, Windsor, NC. Burial was in the church cemetery. The family received friends from their home. ROSA MARY SUTTON Rosa Mary Sutton departed this life on July 2, 2004. She was employed with AMSEC LLC and she was a faithful member of St. Thomas AME Zion Church. She is predeceased by her parents James "Rat" Sutton and Mary Smallwood Sutton. Survivors include a host of cousins and friends. She was born in Bertie County on January 12, 1924 to the late Claude Franklin and Nellie Pierce. She was predeceased by her husband, Woodrow Carson Pierce, Sr. and son, Woodrow Carson Pierce Jr. Mrs Pierce was a membe of the Windsor Assembly of God and a homemaker. Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 6, 2004 at Windsor Assembly of God by the Rev. Chuck Gray. Burial followed in Edgewood Cemetery. She is survived by her daughters Barbara Castelloe of Columbia, SC and Peggy Lawrence of Williamston, NC and her sons Billy Pierce of Windsor and John Paul Pierce of Edenton, NC. CAROLYN GOFFIGAN Carolyn Goffigan, 58, of Kelford, NC died July 4, 2004 in Louise Obici Hospital in Suffolk, VA. She was born on October 30, 1945 in Nansemond County, Virginia. GEORGE THOMAS BRITTON George Thomas Britton, 87, of Lewiston, NC, died Sunday July 11, 2004, at Pitt Memorial Hospital. Mr. Britton was born in Bertie County, March 23, 1917, a son of the late James Ellis Britton and Mary Elizabeth Lodge Britton. Prior to retirement he was employed as a purchasing agent for Harrington Manufacturing Company and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Lewiston. Surviving are his wife, Lucille Britton, of Lewiston, daughter Brenda Barger of Greenville, NC, son, Tommy Britton of Roanoke Rapids, three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, brother, Robert Britton of Lewiston, and sister, Mary Bazemore of Newport News, VA. KATHERYN "KITTY" JOHNSON BARNES Katheryn "Kitty" Johnson Barnes, 65, died Tuesday, July 13, 2004 at Norfolk General Hospital. Kitty was born in Bertie County on March 13, 1939 to Lillian McGraw Johnson and the late Jesse David Johnson. She was a member of Cashie Baptist Church where she was secretary of the WMU. Kitty was an administrator with Gilliam-Ivey Woodcrafters. Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 17, 2004 at Cashie Baptist Church by the Rev. Dennis Conner. ANNIE MAE PHELPS TAYLOR Annie Mae Phelps Taylor, 91, a resident of Three Rivers Nursing Home died on Tuesday, July 13, 2004. She was born in Bertie County on August 28, 1912 to the late Julian and Maggie Keeter Phelps and was predeceased by her husband M.H. Taylor, Sr. Mrs. Taylor was a former homemaker and member of Capeharts Baptist Church. A graveside funeral service was held at 11:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 15, 2004 at Capeharts Church Cemetery. Cherry, 71, was born to the late Joseph and Willie Lee Jenkins on March 10, 1933 in Bertie County, North Carolina and entered into eternal rest of June 7, 2004 after a long illness. She graduated from John B. Bond High School in Lewiston, NC and moved to New Rochelle, NY, where she worked as a domestic engineer. She married James Cherry in 1963 and moved to Connecticut where she worked at GE as a home health aide for many years. She attended Antioch Pentecostal Church in Bridgeport. She later attended Holiness Church of Jesus Christ as the mother of the church, under the leadership of the Overseer Victoria Edwards until her death. She is survived by her husband James Cherry; two sons, James Cherry and Anderson Cherry, three daughters, Darlene Battle, Evangelist Christine Cherry, and Arlene Cherry; seven grandchildren, one brother, Allen Jenkins; five sisters, Mildred Jenkins, Aedelia Siegle, Eldora Wilcox, Hortense Caul, Coreatha Cook, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, family friends and godchildren. IDA MAE FREEMAN NORFOLK - Ida Mae Freeman, 87, of the 5500 block of Bricknell Road, died June 8, 2004, died June 8, 2004, in Sentara Leigh Hospital. Known as "Mama Ida" or "Mama", she was born in Bertie County, NC, and attended Bertie County Training School. She retired after many yeas as a housekeeper. Mrs. Freeman was predeceased by her first husband, Herman Lee Curtis, and later by husband, Mathew L. Hagans Sr. She was also predeceased by her daughter, Ida Lee Patick. Survivors include a daughter, Prentis Pretlow-Davis of Portsmouth; three sons, Mathew Hagans II of Portsmouth, George Hagans Sr. (Gloria) and Charles Freeman Sr., all of Norfolk; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. ASKEW POWELLSVILLE - William Fleetwood Askew, 87, of Powellsville, died June 9, 2004 at his residence. Askew was born, July 22, 1916 in Buena Vista, NC, a son of the late William Jesse Askew and Ruth Tayloe Askew. Prior to his retirement, Askew had been employed as a new car service technician with local Ford Dealerships, was a contract mail carrier, a peanut grader with the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and a farmer. He was a 1934 graduate of Powellsville High School, a member of Powellsville United Methodist Church, a volunteer fireman with the town of Powellsville, a member of Woodmen of the World and the Scrub Club. He is survived by his wife, Bernice Askew, his daughters, Emily Shinaberry of Richmond, VA and Glenda Basnight of Colerain, NC, his sister, Lucille Freeman of Powellsville, three grandchildren, and three great- grandchildren. She received her education in the Bertie County School System. Early in her adulthood, she became a member of St. Elmo Baptist Church in Windsor. She later joined The Church of God For All People in Lewiston where she maintained faithful until illness would not permit her to attend. Tine was a beautiful, graceful and classy woman inside and out. She loved to help her family and friends. She leaves to cherish her memory her husband, Carswell Spivey Jr.; two daughters, Lisa Cherry of Ahoskie, and Lakesha Lee of Windsor; her grandson Keshawn Lee, whom she raised and loved deeply, four step children, Andrea Anthony of Brooklyn, NY, Dr Netasha McLawhorn of Henderson, Tracee Spivey of Greenville, Alpolonia Spivey of Brooklyn, twelve grandchildren, four sisters, Louise Lee of Windsor, Rosa Payton of Norfolk, VA, Jesse Vivians of Brooklyn, Diann Futrell of Flushing, NY, two brothers, Willie Lee of Brooklyn, Jimmie Lee of Greensboro, and a host of nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. Ms. Peace was born on May 9, 1945 to Donald and Barbara Cullifer King. A graveside funeral service was held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, June 17, 2004 at the Roxobel-Kelford Cemetery by the Rev. GLORIA JEAN BLAND Gloria Jean Bland was born October 3, 1965 to Addie Winborne of Windsor, NC. She attended Bertie County Schools where she graduated in 1983. She left Bertie County at the age of twenty-one and moved to Atlantic City, NJ where she could get a better job and make a better life for herself and her children. She was employed at the Showboat Casino for almost 18 years. She was a hard worker and did all she could to help others. On May 26, 2004, Gloria accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior. He was born in Bertie County on June 11, 1928. He was a retired sawmill worker and a member of Zion Baptist Church. He is survived by his children, Minerva Moore of Lewiston, Wendell Bazemore, Kenneth Bazemore, Daniel Bazemore all of Windsor. KENNETH COOPER Kenneth Cooper quietly exchanged time with eternity on Saturday, June 19, 2004, at Southern Maryland Hospital in Clinton, Maryland. Born in Windsor, NC on January 12, 1954, Kenneth was the son of Henry and Clara Cooper. He was a graduate of Bertie High School class of 1972. At an early age Kenneth joined Indian Woods Missionary Baptist Church. He was an active member until he relocated to Maryland. In Maryland, he became affiliate member of the Ebenezer African Methodist Episcopal Church in Fort Washington, Maryland where he attended as long as his health prevailed. Kenneth met and married Joyce Keels Cooper, his wife of 19 beautiful years, whom he loved and cherished. Kenneth began his career as a diesel mechanic in 1972 and continued until 1996. He leaves to cherish his memories: his wife, Joyce Keels Cooper; daughter, Ebonie Keels; parents, Henry and Clara Cooper; three sisters, Sandra Cruickshank, Pleasantville, NJ, Sharon Cooper, Windsor, NC and Anita Cooper, Atlantic City, NJ; three brothers, Kevin Cooper, Windsor, NC, Grover Cooper, Johannesburg, South Africa, and John Cooper, Aberdeen, MD; one aunt, Bernice Gilliam, Norfolk, VA; four sisters-in-law, Audrey Briscoe, Janice Lewis, Manning, SC, Barbara Smith and LaVerne Taylor, Columbia, MD; one brother-in-law, James Keels, Manning, SC; a close and dear friend, Willie Pugh, Foresrville, MD; and a host of nieces, nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews, friends and acquaintances. She was born in Martin County on July 16, 1910 to the late Joel and Etta Lilley Gibson and was predeceased by her husband, Richard Worth Mizelle and was a member of West End Baptist Church and a homemaker. Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. on Friday, June 25, 2004 at Walker Funeral Home in Windsor. Burial followed in Edgewood Cemetery. She is survived by her daughter Janice M. Taylor of Williamston, NC, her daughter-in-law, Doris W. Mizelle of Colerain, NC, ten grandchildren, twenty great- grandchildren, and eight great great-grandchildren. Main Street, died June 23, 2004 at Nash General Hospital in Rocky Mount, NC. Mr. Terry was born Oct 2, 1921, the son of the late Kelly and Gracie Harrington Terry. Mr. Terry was self-employed brick contractor for more than 40 years. He was an outdoorsman who loved to hunt. He was preceded in death by his wife, Estelle Minton Terry and brother, Wallace M. Terry. Survivors include his son, Alex Terry and wife Sue of Aulander, NC; four daughters, Frances Lassiter and hubby bobby of Aulander, Rita Morris and friend David Byrd of Seaford, VA, Laverne Dempsey and husband Connie of Painter, Va. and Brenda Brooks and husband Bobby of Aulander; sister Juanita Hurdle of Aulander; 13 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. PHELPS Mrs. Katie W. Phelps, 82, of North Charleston, SC, died Friday, June 25, 2004, in a local hospital. Born October 13, 1921, to the late William and Florence Phelps in Bertie County, North Carolina., Mrs. Phelps was a widow of the late Thomas Woodrow Phelps and a member of Cooper River Baptist Church. LEONHIRTH VIRGINIA BEACH - Berta Ennis Leonhirth, of Virginia Beach, formerly of Aulander, NC, died June 28, 2004, her 95th birthday in Virginia Beach, where she had made her home for the past 18 years. Mrs. Leonhirth retired from Stanley Home Products and as manager of Aulander Senior Citizens Nutrition Center. She was a member of Aulander Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, her husband George Leonhirth, and two sisters, Eva Fleming, formerly of Enfield, NC and Mary Lloyd formerly of Greenville NC, preceded her in death. LOVIE VIRGINIA BARROW CHERRY Lovie Virginia Barrow Cherry, 79, of Windsor, died June 28, 2004 in Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville, NC. She was the daughter of the late Edison and Eliza Barrow. She was born on July 1, 1925. She joined Cedar Landing Baptist Church at an early age. She met and married James Austin Cherry, who preceded her in death after nearly 50 years of marriage. To this union seven children were born. She leaves to cherish her memory seven children, Shirley of Philadelphia, James, now serving in Iraq, Wallace, Russell, Barbara of Windsor, Ervin and Janie of the home, one sister, Rachel, three brothers, Ernest, and Daniel of Philadelphia, PA and Edward of Deleware, a special cousin, Lucy Hoggard of Windsor, an aunt, an uncle and sixteen grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, a host of other family and friends.
