Bond. He, along with his other brothers and sisters was raised in the Cedar Landing area of Bertie County. He attended school at Merry Meta and some at W.S. Etheridge. He had to put aside the completion of his education, as well as any other education opportunities, in order to assist his parents with farming. On June 26, 1950, he was united in marriage to the late Mary Vaughan Bond and they were married for 52 years until her demise in 2003. God blessed their union with two daughters. His employment consisted of several jobs--Weyerhaeuser, Plymouth, Williamston Basket Factory, Martin General Hospital, and Carolina Aluminum Company, Winton, from which he retired in 1992. He was a member of Cedar Landing Missionary Baptist Church and enjoyed his worship times until this last episode of sickness prevented him from attending. He was a dutiful Trustee and thoroughly enjoyed singing in the choirs of the church---the Senior Choir, the Hallelujah Choir, and the Male Chorus. His interest in music came from the early days of being a part of one of the first male choirs in this area. He was also a part of the Pastor’s Aide Ministry, a member of Bertie County NAACP, and the Cashie Masonic Lodge. Those preceding him in death include is parents, George and Verna Bond, his wife Mary, baby daughter, Beverly and brothers, Lonnie, George Lewis and Henry Bond. His memories will be cherished by his loving and devoted daughter, Muriel, son-in-law, Carl, sisters, Mildred and Thelma of Windsor, and Bernice, brother and sister-in-law, William and Angenetta; sister-in-law, Naomi, al of Philadelphia, as well as many, many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral services were held at Cedar Landing Baptist Church of Windsor on Friday July 7, 2006 at 1:30 p.m. with Rev. Shelton Barnes officiating. Burial followed in Hillcrest Cemetery in Windsor. Cherry’s Funeral Home of Windsor was in charge of the arrangements. ELIZABETH CREECH VIRGINIA BEACH VA - Elizabeth W. "Lucy" Creech, 84, passed away peacefully July 4, 2006, in the comfort of her home surrounded by her loving family. Born November 6, 1921, in Powellsville, NC to William and Lillian Woolard, Lucy was a devoted loving person who always thought of others. She loved to craft work, making dolls and was an active member of the Thalia Chapter of the Kings Daughters and the Pioneers. She will always be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend who will be deeply missed. Left to cherish her memory is her loving husband of 36 years, John Creech; a son, Michael Waldroup and wife Debbie of Chesapeake; a stepson, Norman Creech and wife Sue of Virginia Beach; a granddaughter, Jamie Waldroup and fiancé Tony Williams; a grandson, Chad Waldroup and wife Barbie; and a very special niece, Diane Kemp. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today (Jul 6) at Kellum Funeral Home, Rosewood Chapel. A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Following the service, a reception will be held at the family’s home. ANGELIA SMALLWOOD COFIELD Angelia Smallwood Cofield of Great Mills, Md., the granddaughter of Lord Cornwallis Cherry and the daughter of Mrs. Lois Marie Cherry Smallwood and the late Bart Fearing Smallwood, passed from this life into her final reward at 7:48 a.m. on July 5, 2006. She was born May 26, 1962 in Bertie County. She graduated from Bertie High School and went on to receive her Bachelors of Science Degree in 1986 from East Carolina University. She moved to Maryland t work in the healthcare profession. At the time of her death, she was the Community Support Specialist for Southern Maryland Community Networks an The Rock Creek Foundation for Mental Health. She joined Spring Hill Missionary Baptist Church at an early age, following the path of her mother and beloved grandmother, Lottie Beatrice Walton Cherry, know affectionately throughout the community as Lottie "B" whom she loved and admired. She leaves her mother, Mrs Lois Marie Cherry Smallwood of Windsor; one sister, Tanya Watford of Williamston, three brothers, Anthony and Brady, both of Windsor; and Arwin of Memphis, TN, as well as a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Funeral services were held at Spring Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Lewiston on Sunday, July 9, 2006 at 2 p.m. with Rev. LeRoy Douglas officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. She was born on August 23, 1925 in Bertie County. A funeral will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the Church of God For All People, Windsor, by Pastor Joseph Watson. ANNIE BAZEMORE WILKINS AULANDER - Annie Ruth Bazemore Wilkins, of 2454 NC Hwy. 305, died July 6, 2006 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie, NC. Mrs. Wilkins was a native of Bertie County. She was a member of Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church and the Pastor’s Aide Ministry. She was preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Annie Cherry Bazemore and her husband, Ernest Wilkins Sr. Survivors include a son, Ernest Wilkins Jr. and his wife, Helen; daughters, Elsie Jean Williams and Brenda L. Wilkins; one brother, the Rev. Lassiter Bazemore and his wife, Versie; grandsons, Jimmie D. Williams, Antonio Williams Sr., James M. Williams, Jeffrey L. Williams and McKail A. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Walker Funeral Home Chapel, Windsor, by the Rev. Ron Gardner. Burial will be on Rocky Hock Ashley family cemetery. The family will receive friends at the homeplace 934 US 17 North Windsor. Snyder was a truck driver and an Army veteran. He was a member of the American Legion, and DAV. Survivors include a daughter, Tamara L. Campbell of Sumter, SC; three brothers, Curtis Snyder and Jarrett Ray Snyder, both of Plymouth and Donald "Billy" Snyder of Windsor; and two sisters, Shirley Barber and Sharon Halsey, both of Jamesville. JOSEPH MORRIS MERRY HILL - Jospeh Morris of Merry Hill, died on Saturday, July 8, 2006 at his residence. A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Thursday at Zion Hill Baptist Church, Colerain, by the Rev. Nathaniel Thompson. Burial will be in the family cemetery, Merry Hill. VIRGINIA HALL AULANDER - Virginia Jones "Betty" Hall, 71, of Aulander, died at her residence Sunday, July 9, 2006 following a lengthy illness. Born November 19, 1934 in Bertie County, she was a retired deli manager for Eastern Fuels, Inc. and a member of Woodland First Full Gospel Church. She is survived by one daughter, Brenda Bryant and husband, Shelton of Aulander; two sons, Gerald Wayne Jenkins of Aulander and Norman Dwight Jenkins of Richmond, Virginia; one sister, Marie Kornegay of Seven Springs; four brothers, Bob S. Jones and wife, Judy of Aulander, James W. Jones, Sr. of Aulander, Richard D. Jones of Aulander and Herman S. Morris of Siler City; nine grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 12, 2006 at Woodland First Full Gospel Church with the Rev. Evelyn Marie Jones officiating. Burial will follow at Job Cemetery. RALEIGH MOORE WINDSOR - Raleigh Moore, 64, of the 1400 block of Connor Drive, died July 11, 2006. A funeral will be at noon Saturday in Wilder’s Funeral Home Chapel, Aulander. RENA P. RASCOE WINDSOR - Rena Pearl Rascoe, a native of Windsor, died July 12, 2006. She was born on May 4, 1947 to the late Cora Lee Rascoe Hill in Windsor. She was the oldest of four children. She was preceded in death by her mother, Cora, and her brother, Larry. She attended public schools in Bertie County, where she received her early education. At an early age, she joined Beacon Light Baptist Church and was a faithful member until moving out of the community. She became a born again member of the Church of God For All People. She attended church there along with her sister as long as her health permitted. She wasn’t blessed to have children, but upon early death her mom, she took on the role of mother for Joseph, Pattie and their late brother, Larry. She even lived to help with her nieces and nephews. She was a good sister, aunt, and friend. She leaves to cherish her memory a sister, Pattie Watson, a brother, Joseph Hill, a father David Smallwood, Sr. of Windsor, one aunt, Lizzie Rascoe of Greensboro, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted at the Church of God for All People on Sunday, July 16, 2006 at 2 p.m. with Rev. John Watson officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Cherry’s Funeral Home of Windsor was in charge of the arrangements. ALTON JONES Alton Jones, 64, of Ahoskie, departed this life on July 12, 2006 at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville. He was born on February 3,1942 to the late Rufus and Estelle Askew Jones in Bertie County. He was a member of Piney Wood Chapel Baptist Church. He was a retired car salesman with Sunbury Finance. He leaves to cherish his memories his wife, Shelia Wynn of Ahoskie, one daughter, Angela Jones of Ahoskie, and a host of other friends and relatives. Services will be held on Sunday, July 16, 2006 at 3:00 p.m. at Piney Wood Chapel Baptist Church, Ahoskie, by the Rev. Matthew Silver. Burial was held in the Cherry Family Cemetery. Hunter’s Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie handled the services. ANNIE G. JENKINS AHOSKIE - Annie Gray Jenkins, 82, a native of Bertie County, died July 14, 2006 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital. She was the widow of Henry Jenkins. Mrs. Jenkins was a homemaker, and a member of Carpenter’s Shop Church. A funeral service was conducted Monday at Carpenter’s Shop Church by the Rev. Wallace Phillips. Burial was in Highland Memorial Gardens. Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, was in charge. Survivors include two sons, Henry Earl Jenkins and Charles Watt Jenkins, both of Ahoskie; two sisters, Della Elizabeth Swain of Hampton, Va., and Dorothy Jean Dunning of Ahoskie; one brother, Charlie L. Cobb of Ahoskie; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. JO JO ARCHER POWELLSVILLE - Jo Jo Archer, died July 16, 2006. A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Saturday at Roanoke Chowan Community College, Ahoskie, by the Rev. Thomas Lee. Burial will be in Philippi Baptist Church Cemetery, Cofield. FAYE SIMMONS MERRY HILL - Faye Brown Simmons, 51, a native of Bertie County, died July 17, 2006 at Pitt Memorial Hosptial. She was the widow of Benjamin Lee Simmons and her father L.E. LYONS DURHAM - Charlie Lester Lyons, 80, formerly of Lewiston, died July 23, 2006 at his residence. He was the widower of Julia Bohannon Lyons. A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church, Windsor, by the Rev. Robert Walton. A wake will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Woodville Plains Missionary Baptist Church, Lewiston. THELMA OUTLAW WINDSOR - Thelma Bazemore Outlaw, 84, a native of Bertie County, died July 20, 2006 at Bertie Memorial Hospital, Windsor. She was born in Bertie County on August 30, 1921. A funeral will be conducted at 2:30 p.m Sunday at Sandy Point Baptist Church, Windsor, by the Rev. Sammy Fields. Burial will be in the Outlaw family cemetery. CASTELLOE AULANDER - William Floyd Castelloe, 71 of the 200 block of Millennium Rd. died July 21, 2006 in his home. Mr. Castelloe was a native of Bertie County, he had retired from the North Carolina National Guard, retired as District Manager for President Baking Company, was a Deacon and Member of Carpenter’s Shop Church, and sang and played with Praise and Worship Team at the Church, and served as Church Superintendent. He was the son of the late Raymond and Edna White Castelloe. Surviving are his wife of 50 years Mary Ann Odom Castelloe, a daughter, Carla C. Ambrose and husband Brad of Ahoskie, NC, one sister Carolyn Hill, Windsor, NC; one brother, Merle Castelloe, Columbia, NC and also surviving brother-in-law, Robert Odom of Rocky Mount, NC; brother-in-law and sister-in- law, William Odom and wife Jean Odom, Hopewell, Va. Besides his mother and father he was predeceased by a daughter Julie Castelloe, and his father and mother-in-law, Wayland Odom and Nellie Odom Price. A celebration of Life Service will be held for Mr. Castelloe and 2:00 p.m. Sunday July 23, 2006 at Garrett Funeral Home and with the Rev. Wallace Phillips and Rev. William Odom officiating. A viewing for the family will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the chapel of Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie. Mrs. Sessoms was a member of St. Mark. Survivors include four daughters, Jeanette Doe of Savannah, Ga., Lucresa Fleming and Annie C. Rowe, both of Colerain and Shirley B. Sessoms of Fayetteville; two brothers, Foy Cherry of Ossining, NY and Sherman Cherry of Atlanta, Ga.; one sister, Shirley Johnson of Ossining; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. CAPITOLAR HARRELL KELFORD - Capitolar Wynn Harrell, 87, died July 26, 2006 at Bertie Memorial Hospital. She was the widow of Wilson Harrell. She was born September 12, 1918 to the late Norman and Bertha Hardy Wynn. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Roxobel-Kelford Cemetery by the Rev. Chris Lee and Rev. Doug Sivey. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Walker Funeral Home, Windsor and other times at the home of Wendell and Susan Harrell, 1222 Wayland Street, Windsor. Mrs. Harrell was a member of Kelford Baptist Church and retired from Golden Peanuts as an inspector. Survivors include a daughter, Charlotte H. Eubanks of Windsor; a son, Wendell Harrell of Windsor; and four grandchildren. MAUDE S. WILLIAMS HACKENSACK, NJ - Maude Etta Smallwood Williams, 94, of Hackensack, NJ died Thursday, July 27, 2006 at Bergem Regional Hospital, Paramus, NJ. She was born the daughter of Nat and Alice Smallwood on April 28, 1912 in Bertie County. She was employed at Bergen Pines County Hospital in Paramus as a Certified Nurses Assistant until her retirement. Her brothers and sisters peceded her in death. From her marriage, one child was born, Jean Williams, who preceded her in death on July 27, 2002. She leaves to cherish her memories a host of nephews, nieces, relatives and loving friends. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Gilliam Funeral Home Chapel, Windsor. Burial will be in Indian Woods Baptist Church Cemetery, Windsor. HILDA BYRUM COLERAIN - Hilda White Byrum, 82, died July 29, 2006. She was the widow of Lyman Woodrow Byrum. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Edgewood Cemetery, Windsor by the Rev. Jimmy Jarrell. Massey Funeral Home, Aulander, is in charge. Survivors include a son, Carlton Lee Byrum of Colerain; a daughter, Linda Joyce Byrum of Windsor; a sister, Goldie White of Windsor; two grandchildren; and six great- grandchildren. FRANCES A. BASS AHOSKIE - Frances Ann Bass, 83, passed away after an extended illness of many years on July 30, 2006 at Britthaven of Washington, NC. She was born in Powellsville in Bertie County on August 9, 1922, to Kadar and Blanche Harrell Bass and lived there on the family farm for most of her life. She was a member of Powellsville Baptist Church. Frances worked as secretary and bookkeeper for Jernigan Oil Company of Ahoskie most of her younger life and was an active member of the Ahoskie Kiwanis Club, the North Carolina Democratic Club and the Women of the Moose in Suffolk. She later worked until retirement with Charlotte Liberty Mutual Insurance. Frances was always devoted to her family; her mother, with whom she lived until her passing in 1965, and her sisters, Blanche B. Perry and Marjory B. Perry and brother, Kader W. Bass Jr., who all predeceased her. She is survived by her beloved sister-in-law and guardian, Helen W. Bass of Jamesville, NC., and by four nieces, two nephews and their families. A graveside service will be conducted Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Highland Memorial Gardens, Ahoskie, with the Rev. Robert May officiating. The family will receive friends at Garrett Funeral Home, from 9:30 until 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, prior to the services. JUNE MORRIS AULANDER - June Elizabeth Morris, 55, a native of Bertie County, died July 30, 2006 at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville. She was born on June 29, 1951. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Aulander First Baptist Church by the Rev. Vernon Lassiter. Burial will be in the Freeman Family Cemetery, Powellsville. She held an Associate Degree in Business Administration, A Certificate in Accounting, and a Diploma in Cosmetology. LEROY C. THOMPSON PHILADELPHIS PA - Leroy Carter Thompson, a native of Bertie County, died July 31, 2006 at Jefferson University Hospital, Philadelphia. A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Weeping Mary Baptist Church, Lewiston, by the Rev. Johnnie Cofield. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
