EVELYN H. ELWOOD SALISBURY, MD. -- Evelyn Howard Elwood, 82, departed this life peacefully to be with Her Lord, June 1, 2003, at Chesapeake General Hospital, Chesapeake, Virginia. Evelyn was born in Aulander, North Carolina to Eva and Thurman Howard. She attended Roanoke Rapids High School, Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, and was a graduate of Salisbury State Teachers College, Salisbury, Maryland, Evelyn pursued her career in elementary education, teaching in Wicomico County for 22 years. She was a member of O.E.S. in North Carolina; Retired Teachers Association of Maryland; an active member of Allen Memorial Baptist Church; Evelyn participated in WMU, Senior Adult group. Evelyn was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and dear friend to many. She was preceded in death by her, husband of 32 years, Richard J. Elwood, her parents, Eva and Thurman Howard, and sisters, Dorothy Tyson Olsson and Lucille Howard. She is survived by three sons: Richard J. Elwood and wife, Margaret of Salisbury, James T. Elwood and wife, Sheri of Martinez, Ga. and W. Paul Elwood and wife, Vickie of Salisbury; a daughter, Susan E. Atkins and husband, Allen of Georgetown, Del.; seven grandchildren, Allison J. JUDITH P. HARRELL SUFFOLK -- Judith ``Judy'' Perry Harrell, 53, president of Suffolk Forest Products, died June 3, 2003. Born Dec. 24, 1949, in Suffolk, she was the daughter of the late Fermer and Louise Bradshaw Perry. Mrs. Harrell was a member of Oakland Christian Church, chairman of the Board of Deacons and a member of Circle Two and the choir. She was a past president of the American Cancer Society and former chairman of the Relay For Life in Suffolk. She served as a volunteer at Obici Hospital for 12 years and as a volunteer for Make-A-Wish Foundation. Mrs. Harrell was a former board member of Nansemond Suffolk Academy and the homeless shelter. Survivors include her husband, Richard Riddick Harrell; daughters and sons-in-law, Nicole H. and Alan Duke of Suffolk, Dena Y. and Tim Thomas of Windsor; son and daughter-in-law, Ryan E. and Camille Harrell of Suffolk; and granddaughter, Peyton A. He enjoyed raising watermelons, sweet potatoes and cows. He was retired from A&P Grocery Stores. WINDLEY GATES -- Harriett Virginia Byrum ``Jennie'' Windley, 92, of NC Hwy. 37, went to join her Heavenly family on Monday, June 9, 2003, from Nansemond Pointe Convalescent Center in Suffolk. Mrs. Windley was born in Chowan County and was the daughter of the late Richard Henry Sr. and Harriett Virginia Nixon Byrum. A homemaker, she was formerly a member of Alexander Baptist Church in Portsmouth and the Rocky Hock Baptist Church near Edenton, N.C., and was currently a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church in Aulander, N.C. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of over 50 years, Charles T. Windley; a son, Carlton R. Windley; and two grandsons, Mark Skeens and Dr. Jack Young. MARANGER VIRGINIA BEACH -- Doreen Harrell Maranger, 78, of the 500 block of Heather Drive, died June 9, 2003. Born in Merry Hill, N.C., Mrs. Maranger served as a nurse during the Korean War in the U.S. Air Force. She also served as a bio-feedback therapist and as a registered nurse at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, DePaul Medical Center and the Portsmouth Psychiatric Center. She was a member and served on the Alter Guild of Emmanuel Episcopal Church. Survivors include her husband of more than 50 years, George J. Monroe and Carl Funeral Home is in charge. AARON J. TRUITT PORTSMOUTH - Aaron Jackson “Jack” Truitt, 86, of the 100 block of Lynn Drive, died June 18, 2003, in his residence. A native of Aulander, NC, he retired from the fire department in Fort Story in December 1974 after 40 years of government service and was a courier supervisor for Central Fidelity Bank (now Wachovia) for more than 15 years. Mr Truitt was a member of the Park View Baptist Church for more than 62 years and served as a deacon. He was a member of the Portsmouth Civitan Club and was it president in 1975-1976. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife of more that 62 years, Margaret Bazemore Truitt; a daughter, Joyce T. Brennan and husband Richard of Herndon, VA; a son, Frederick J. Truitt and wife Emma V. of Portsmouth; a lifelong family friends, Rainell and Randy Rowell and their grandsons, Matthew and Andrew; three grandchildren, Courtenay Werner and husband Don of Portsmouth, Mark C. Brennan and Kate E. Brennan, both of Herndon; and three great grandchildren, Shelby Faye Werner, Caroline Elizabeth Werner and James Avery Werner. Besides her husband, she was predeceased by her parents, James Perry and Della Collins Bazemore and two brothers, Garvey Bazemore and Edgar P. Bazemore. Born in Kelford, NC Mrs. Francis had been a resident of Franklin for more than 50 years. She worked for many years at Parker Drug Co., and it was because of this employment that Mrs. Francis was well known by many area residents. Mrs. Francis was the widow of Jesse B. Coburn and James E. Francis. Mrs Francis is survived by three daughters, Sylvia C. Boykin of Franklin, Teresa L. Coburn of Easton, MD., and Michelle F. Williams of Greenville, NC.; a son, Craig B. Coburn of Franklin; two sisters, Bessie Shiflett of Franklin and Marry Lee Fees of Easton; three brothers, Edgar Edmonds of Jackson, NC., William Edmonds of Rocky Mount, NC, and James T. Edmonds of Gloucester, Va; four grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Mrs Francis was also the mother of the late Trula C. Price. Main St., Williamston, died Monday, June 30, 2003, in Martin General Hospital, Williamston. Mrs. Nicholson was born in Bertie County, the daughter of the late Bythal Stanton and Lucy Bullock Leggett. She was married to J.B. Nicholson, who preceded her in death. She was the owner and operator of Nicholsons Daycare. She was a 70-year member of First Pentecostal Holiness Church, Williamston. Survivors include three sons, Alton Nicholson Sr. of Laurel Hill, Lloyd Frank Nicholson of Alexandria, Va.; and Benjamin C. Nicholson of New Bern; two daughters, Alice Nicholson of Williamston and Evelyn Oliver of Orlando, Fla.; 15 grandchildren and 24 great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Carlton Nicholson; four brothers, Arthur Leggett, Dennis Leggett, Leonard Leggett and Jim Leggett; and one sister, Annie Mae Dunning.
