Ralph G. Wiggins Sr., 69, of Owings, Md., died on June 1, 2006 at his residence, He was born in Bertie County, North Carolina. He was a member of Spring Hill Baptist Church. He was a retired floor tile installer. Funeral services will be at Spring Hill Baptist Church in Lewiston on Saturday, June 10, 2006 at 2 p.m. with Rev. LeRoy Douglas officiating. JOHN PHILLIPS WILLINGBORO, NJ - John Phillips, 67, died June 1, 2006. A graveside service will be Friday at 11 a.m. in the Phillips Family Cemetery, Windsor, NC. Gilliam Funeral Home, Windsor, is in charge. EVA LEARY MERRY HILL - Eva Leary, 80, a native of Bertie County, died June 4, 2006 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville. She was a member of Ashland Baptist Church. Survivors include sons, Carlton Leary and James Leary, both of Merry Hill, Starkey Leary of Aulander, Bobby Leary of Greensboro and Tracy Leary of Edenton; daughters, Eva Leary and Wilheminia Leary, both of Merry Hill; a sister, Sarah Riddick of Merry Hill; grandchildren; and great- grandchildren. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery. JEWELL LAKE JOHNSON PORTSMOUTH VA - Jewell Lake Johnson, 94, a native of Roxobel, died June 6, 2006, in Seattle, Wash. She was the widow of Hugh "Red" Johnson and was the mother of the late Brenda J. Proffitt. She was predeceased by her parents, "Bessie" and Edgar Wimbrow; sisters, Kate, Millie and India; brothers, Jay and Donald "Tikki". She was a member of Western Branch Baptist Church. Survivors include her brother, Edgar McGee "Red" Wimbrow Jr. of Colonial Heights; grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mr. Joe Dunning was formerly of Lewiston, NC. He was born in Bertie County on June 3, 1946 to the late Edgar and Annie Mae Leggett Dunning. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Walker Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Roger Leggett officiating. LOTTIE WEAVER LEWISTON - Lottie Gilliam Weaver, died June 7, 2006 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville. DORIS DAILEY AHOSKIE NC - Doris Miller Dailey, 80, of 131 Center Grove Road, Ahoskie, NC, died Friday June 9, 2006 at the Roanoke- Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie, NC. Mrs. Dailey was born January 26, 1926 in Bertie County, NC, and was the daughter of the late Walter Miller and Lula Baker Miller. She was preceded in death by her husband Louis F. Dailey, Jr., on December 16, 2000. Survivors include her daughter Peggy Rodgers and her husband Dennis of Hopewell, Va.; step-daughter Sheron J. Dailey and her husband Thomas B. Tucker of Terre Haute, In.; her son Reid Daniels and his wife Jane of Harrellsville, NC; sister Rena Todd of Windsor, NC; two grandchildren and six great- grandchildren. WILLIAMS NORFOLK - Hannah Sue Williams, 83, of the 7000 block of Auburn Ave., passed quietly and peacefully into eternal rest June 10, 2006. She was a native of Windsor, NC and the daughter of the Willie and SMithie Cofield. She was the widow of Johnnie Williams Sr. Mrs. Williams was a faithful member of New Mount Zion Church of God Holiness where she was the Mother of the church, a member of the Prayer Band and a member of No. 8 Sunday School Class. She was a sweet and loving Mother and grandmother who will leave to cherish her precious memory, daughters, Mary M. Webster, (James Sr.) and Cora L. Elsbery; a son, Johnnie Williams Jr. (Mary). She will also be sorely missed by her eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held at noon Saturday in New Mount Zion Church of God Holiness, 1042 Philpotts Road, with Elder James Wilson officiating. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park. The family will be at 3721 Orange St., the home of Mr. and Mrs. Johnnie Williams Jr. NETTIE CHERRY Nettie V. Cherry was born in Windsor and departed this life on Saturday, June 10, 2006. She was the daughter of the late Arthur and Eleanor Cherry. She worked for the state of New York Department of Social Services for over twenty years. She retired with over 35 years of devoted service. She leaves to mourn her loss her brothers Simon Pete and Arthur Cherry, her sister Brittann Boston, and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services were held at Sandy Point Baptist Church on Saturday, June 17, 2006 at 1 p.m. with Elder Jeffrey Cherry officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Cherry’s Funeral Home of Windsor was in charge of the arrangements. JAMES F. SMALLWOOD PORTSMOUTH - James Frank Smallwood, 67, formerly of 87 Manly St., died June 11, 2006, in Rochester, Minn. Born in Woodville, NC, he was a member of the National Rifle Association. Survivors include his wife, Anna W. Smallwood of Wade, North Carolina; two daughters, Janine Smallwood and Malika Foster; three sons, Williams Sykes, Christopher Smallwood and Dwight Washington; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and aunts, cousins, in-laws and friends. Burial will be Monday at noon in Thompson Family Cemetery, Woodville, NC. Viewing at Corprew Funeral Home will begin at noon today. The family will be at the funeral home from 5 to 6 p.m. Saturday. MARY BERTHA MITCHELL Mary Bertha Freeman Mitchell was the daughter of George and Emma Freeman. She was born on March 28, 1931 in Windsor. She passed away in Pitt County Memorial Hospital on June 11, 2006 from a recent illness. She retired from the U.S. Postal Service after many years. She returned to North Carolina in 1997. She leaves mourn her passing, two brothers George Freeman of Windsor and Haywood Freeman of Norfolk, Va., four sisters, Fannie Williams, Emma Green, Ida Wynn of Norfolk, and Rebecca Grandy of Windsor; and other relatives, friends and neighbors. Graveside services were held at the Freeman Family Cemetery in Windsor on Thursday, June 15, 2006 at 1 p.m. with Dwight Williams officiating. Gilliam Funeral Home of Windsor was in charge of the arrangements. GLENDA RYAN WINDSOR - Glenda Faye Ryan was born in Bertie County on March 18, 1964 to Edward Lee Ryan and the late Sarah Ryan. She was 42 and died June 12, 2006 in her home. She attended the Church of God For All People until her health declined. She was employed at Perdue Farms for nine years until she left to enroll in Roanoke Chowan Community College where she received her Nursing Assistant II license. She was employed with the Roanoke-Chowan Hospital ICU Department for eight years, Quality Home Staffing for eight years and the Bertie County Health Department for numerous years. She received her Early Childhood Credential from Roanoke-Chowan Community College. She leaves to cherish her memory, a loving father, Edward Ryan of the home, her sisters Georgia Etheridge of Lewiston and Sarah Bond of Windsor; six brothers Milton Ryan and William Ryan of Windsor, Jerry Lee Ryan of Ahoskie, Andrew Ryan of Greenville, Paul Swain of Williamston, and James Ryan of Hampton, Va., seven aunts, seven uncles and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. WHITE WINDSOR - Rosa Asbell White, 85, a native of Bertie County, died June 14, 2006 at Chowan Hospital, Edenton. She was the widow of Henry White, they were married 48 years. Mrs. White was born in Bertie County on June 18, 1930 to the late William and Mary Mizelle Asbell. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Walker Funeral Chapel. Perly Asbell of Los Vegas, NV; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. JOHN WILLIAMS GREENVILLE - John Williams, 60, of the 2300 block of Ethel St., died June 14, 2006. BELCH COLERAIN - Mr. Lewis Edward Belch, age 75, of Colerain, NC, died June 17, 2006 at Guardian Care in Ahoskie, NC. Mr. Belch was born May 9, 1931 in Bertie County, NC, the son of the late Arlie T. Belch and Collie Davenport Belch. He was a retired electrician. Survivors include his sisters, Arline B. Riddick of Colerain, NC and Dorothy M. Phillips of Dallas, Texas. His brothers, Donald R. PHILIP CHERRY Philip Cherry was born in Windsor on October 16m 1917 and departed this life on Friday, June 9, 2006. He was the son of the late Arthur and Eleanor Cherry. He served in the U.S. Navy and was honorably discharged after WWII. He was then employed by Lea Lumber Company where he retired with over 30 years of faithful service. He was married to Clara Ruth Cherry for seventy years. To this union, three sons were born. He was preceded in death by his sons Willie James and Philip. He leaves many fond memories to his son Arthur Cherry, his brothers Simon Pete and Arthur Cherry, his sister Brittann Boston, and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. ERMA HOGGARD AULANDER - Mrs. Erma Lee Williams Hoggard, age 85, of Aulander, NC, died Thursday, June 22, 2006 at Bertie Memorial Hospital in Windsor, NC. Mrs. Hoggard was born July 10, 1920, the daughter of the late Jospeh "Billy" Williams and Amelia Mae Williams. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James Bruce Hoggard. She was a member of Connaritsa Baptist Church. Survivors include her son, James Bruce Hoggard Jr. and his wife Donna of Dudley, NC. Two grandchildren, Tammy Cartagena and her husband Wilson of Dudley, NC and Gary Hoggard and his wife Judy of Pikeville, NC. BAZEMORE LEWISTON - Mary Urguhart "Aunt Haley" Bazemore, 108, a native of Bertie County, died June 23, 2006 at her residence. She was born May 18, 1898 in Bertie County. WILLIAM WHITE BALTIMORE, MD. - William Horace White, 63, a native of Bertie County, died June 24, 2006 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie. He was born June 8, 1943 in Bertie County. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Zion Hill Baptist Church, Colerain, by the Rev. Nathaniel Thompson. Burial will be in the church cemetery. LYON WINDSOR - Janice Phelps Lyons, 78, a native of Bertie County, died June 24, 2006 at Pitt Memorial Hospital. She was the widow of Henry Wise Lyon Jr. She was born in Bertie County on December 19, 1921 to the late C.E. and Annie Sue Lawrence Phelps and was also predeceased by her daughter, Jan Lyon Ashley. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Cashie Baptist Church by Dr. Carroll Tarkington. Burial will be in Edgewood Cemetery. MAHLON JERNIGAN AULANDER - Mahlon Jernigan, 80, of 307 Broad Street, died Monday, June 26, 2006 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville, NC. Mr. Jernigan was born in Bertie County, a son of the late G.D. and Moell Jernigan. He was a graduate of Aulander High School and worked as a telegraph operator for Atlantic Coastline Railroad. He was also a farmer and a local businessman in Aulander for many years. Mahlon was a former member and deacon of Connaritsa Baptist Church and was presently a member of Aulander Baptist Church where she served on the finance and building and grounds committee. Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Margaret Cobb Jernigan; a son, William Mahlon Jernigan and wife, Judy of Matthews, NC; a daughter, Cecelia Todd and husband Tony of Aulander; grandchildren, Sue Ann Lester and husband, Ted of Suffolk, Va., Meredith Lee Griffith and husband, Heath of Thomasville, NC; two great-grandchildren, Bayleigh Griffith and Taylor Lester; a sister, Jane J. Baker and a brother, Joe R. Jernigan, both of Aulander, and several nieces and nephews. THOMAS JOHNSON WINDSOR - Thomas "Tom" Edgar Johnson, 86, a native of Bertie County, died June 27, 2006 at Three Rivers Nursing Home. He was the widower of Dorothy Arant Johnson. He was born in Bertie County on January 16, 1920 to the late Robert Lee and Lydia Bonds Johnson. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Windsor Assembly of God by the Rev. David Baker and the Rev. Chuck Gray. Burial with military rites will be in Edgewood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Walker Funeral Home and other times from the home of Peggy and George Cobb, 403 Taylor St., Windsor. He attended Windsor Assembly of God an was a WWII Army veteran with the 117th Infantry 30th Division. Survivors include three daughters, Marion J. Cale and Peggy J. Cobb, both of Windsor and Dianne J. Davis of Rocky Mount; one son, William Robert Johnson of Merry Hill; six grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. OPAL LEWIS VAUGHAN Opal Lewis Vaughan, of Roanoke Rapids, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, June 27, 2006 at the age of sixty. Mrs. Vaughan, an employee of Weldon City Schools, was a native of Bertie County and the daughter of the late Grady Sawyer Leicester and Nova Asbell Leicester. Mrs. Vaughan was a Certified Professional Secretary member of the Professional Secretaries Association, former President of the Women’s Auxiliary of the AmVets, Post 320. Opal was a longtime representative of AVON, and was attending Halifax Community College pursuing an Associate Degree. She was a member of the First Baptist Church. Mrs. Vaughan was preceded in death by her husbands, Danny Lewis and Harvey Vaughan. Surviving are a daughter, Beverly Cooke and her husband, Floyd of Raleigh, a son, Cary Lewis and his wife Dothie, of Windsor, a sister Catherine Asbell and her husband, Travis, five grandsons, Daniel, Joey, Trey, Grady and Cameron and one great-granddaughter, Alexis. ISAAC PARKER Mr. Isaac "Bud" Parker, 79, died at Roanoke Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie on Wednesday, June 28, 2006. Mr. Parker is a native of Bertie County. He retired from the US Army following some twenty years of service. Preceding him in death are his mother and father, Betty Sue Parker and George Washington Parker, as well as his two sons, David and Joe Parker. Survivors include his wife, Alice P. Parker of the home, five daughters, Margaret Ann of Wyoming, Carol Talbott of Louisville, KY, Cindy Baker of Hepzibah, Ga., Barbara Ann Bristow of Farmville, and Hazel Jean Romans of Louisville, Ky; one son, Chris Parker of Pekin, In; five sisters, Betty Joyner of Williamsburg, Va, Shirley Askew ad Deanna Bunch, both of Eure, Syvia Lee of Whaleyville, Va. and Mamie Ellen White of Windsor, three brothers, George Parker of Roduco, Frank Parker of Canitullo, TX and Tommy Harrell of Kelford. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in New First Baptist Church of Taylorsville by the Rev. Marcus D. Brown Sr. Burial will be in the Wilder Family Cemetery, Hexalena Road, Ahoskie. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge. HELEN TODD WINDSOR - Helen Butler Todd, 74, died June 29, 2006 at Bertie Memorial Hospital. She was the widow of Johnnie Washington Todd. Mrs. Todd was born on May 7, 1932 to the late Clinton Hartwell and Tessie Todd Butler. A funeral was conducted Sunday at Siloam Baptist Church by the Revs. Jimmy Cox, Ashby Browder, Preston Jernigan and Michael Bailey. Burial was in Coburn Family Cemetery. Survivors include her daughters, Carol T. Holley, Helen T. "Sissy" Pierce, Terry T. Smith, Tammy T. Anders, Bonnie T. Hoggard and Bobbi Jo T. White, all of Windsor; sons, William J. "Shorty" Todd of Windsor, G. Ray Todd of Greenville, Johnnie F. Todd of Africa, Jimmie L. Todd of Washington, Dannie W. Todd of Greenville, S.C., Russell N. Todd of Windsor and Van Q. Todd of Lusby, Md.; a sister, Jean B. Copeland of Williamston; 32 grandchildren; and 22 great- grandchildren.
