ASKEW COLERAIN - David LaGray "Pos" Askew, 88, of the 300 block of North Main St., died March 1, 2005, in Chowan Hospital, Edenton. Mr. Askew was born in Bertie County and was a retired farmer. He was an avid checkers player and golfer, and played semi-pro baseball in the Albermarle League. Survivors include his wife, Mary Agnes Harrell Askew; a daughter Leah A. Newsome of Colerain; two sons, Garland L. Askew and Lynn M. Askew, both of Raleigh, NC; two sisters, Retha Mizelle of Colerain, and Lena Latham of New Bern; 11 grandchildren; and five great- grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Norleen A. Daniels. A graveside service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in Hillcrest Cemetery, Colerain, with Rev. Shelby Stephens officiating. The family will receive friends in the Colerain Community Center immediately following the service. Memorial donations may be made to the Colerain Rescue Squad or a favorite charity. Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, is serving the Askew Family. SARAH C. PHELPS WINDSOR - Sarah Cowanc Phelps, 76, a native of Windsor, died March 2, 2005 in Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie. Mrs Phelps was born in Windsor, NC on April 25, 1928 to the late Eugene and Minnie Wilson Cowand. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Walker Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Dennis J. Conner and the Rev. Jack Byrd. Memorial gifts may be made to Preschool and Sunday School Department at Cashie Baptist Church, 221 S. Queen St., Windsor, NC 27983 Mrs. Phelps was a child care provider and homemaker. She was a member of Cashie Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School. Survivors include her husband, Murray Phelps of Windsor; a son, Robert Phelps of Williamston; three daughters, Hazel Davis and Ann Phelps, both of Williamston and Ellen Davenport of Windsor; one brother, Luther Cowand of Jacksonville, Fla.; three sisters, Betty Hughes of Windsor, Ruby Harrison of Raleigh and Minnie Ridenour of Greenville; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral arrangements were handled by Walker Funeral Home, Windsor, NC. SARAH B. MITCHELL AULANDER - Sarah Bazemore Mitchell, 90, died March 3, 2005. Mrs. Mitchell was born March 13, 1914, the daughter of the late "Buddy" Vann Bazemore and Cora Bazemore. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William Mitchell. She attended Women's College at Greensboro, NC, and taught school in Bertie and Hertford County Schools for many years. She was a lifetime member of the Aulander Volunteer Rescue Squad and a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the John Finch Early VFW Post 11226. She was a faithful member of Aulander Baptist Church, where she served as the church historian. A funeral will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. in Massey Funeral Home, Aulander, with the Rev. Robbie Parker officiating. Burial will follow in the Aulander Cemetery. A visitation will be held Saturday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home. MITCHELL WINDSOR - Jacob "Jake" Brinkley Mitchell, 82, a native of Windsor, died March 3, 2005 at Pitt Memorial Hospital. Mr. Mitchell was born in Windsor, NC on November 13, 1922 to the late James Granderson and Rachel Powell Mitchell. WHITE WINDSOR - Archie Lathan White, 76, a native of Askewville, Bertie County, died March 3, 2005 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie. Mr. White was born in Bertie County on October 1, 1928 to the late Archie D. and Viola Johnson White. A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Askewville Baptist Church by the Rev. BUNCH WINDSOR - Joy Mizelle Bunch, 49, a native of Bertie County, died March 3, 2005 at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville. Mrs. Bunch was born in Bertie County on July 6, 1955. She was predeceased by her father, Woodrow Mizelle. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Walker Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Dennie J. Conner. Mrs. Bunch was a nurse at Martin General Hospital for 12 years. She was a member of the Askewville Baptist Church. RUTH L. WHITEHEAD WINDSOR - Ruth L. Whitehead, 91, of the 200 block of S. King St., died March 4, 2005. at Bertie Memorial Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Ruth M. and Charles F. Lyon and was preceded in death by her husband, Burgess U. Whitehead. She is survived by a son, Charles L. Whitehead and wife Neenie; a daughter, Susan W Harrell and husband Wendell; and four grandchildren, Judd and Chad Whitehead and Allison and Gray Harrell, all of Windsor. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the St. Thomas Episcopal Church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Walker Funeral Home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today. JOYNER AULANDER - Ruth Vann Joyner, 89, died March 4, 2005 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie. A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at St John Second Baptist Church by the Rev. ROSA WINSTON BOND NEW YORK NY - Rosa Winston Bond, 102, died March 4, 2005. A native of Bertie County, NC, Bond was born to Henry and Cora Spruill Bond of Windsor on November 12, 1902. She was the seventh of 11 children. As a child, she always ad an interest in church and family activities. After completing her education in Bertie County, she moved to Norfolk, Va., for two years. She returned to Windsor to be with her family. In 1935, she went to New York City. She received Christ at an early age at the Cedar Landing Baptist Church in Windsor. Once in New York City, she was married to David Mantley and continued to be very active in the church. Over the years, she attended The Friendship Baptist Church and The Little Missionary Baptist Church. In 1970, she joined the Downtown Baptist Church in Harlem, New York and served as President of the Praying Band, Gospel Chorus and Usher Board. She was the Treasurer of the Sunday School and Trustee of the Church and a Missionary. She was also the "Mother" of the church. She also was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and participated in civic and political organizations in the New York City area. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Pearl J. Allen of the Bronx, one granddaughter, two great- granddaughter, three great-great-granddaughters, a host of nieces and nephews; and one adopted daughter. Funeral services will be held at St. John Pentecostal Church in New York City on Friday, March 11 at 10 a.m. Repose will be at Florence E. Browne Funeral Home located at 436 Lenox Avenue in New York City on Thursday, March 10 from 3-8 p.m. AMANDA E. BOND WINDSOR - Amanda E. Bond, 82, was born on October 20, 1922 in Bertie County, NC. She was the daughter of the late Mamie Norfleet Bond and George Washington Bond. Amanda was the eldest of eight children. She departed this life on March 4, 2005 at Bertie Memorial Hospital to join hands with the Lord. She attended and graduated from W.S. Etheridge High School. At an early age, she joined Speller's Chapel Disciples of Christ in Windsor, NC. On June 2, 1942, she was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Walter Daniel Bond. To this union four children were born, who she leaves to cherish her memories, Emma Outlaw, Milton Bond, both of New York, Lois Bazemore,and Melvin Bond, both of Windsor, three grandchildren, Felicia Heath of Raleigh, Quashawna Bond and Jevonte' Brown, both of Windsor; three great grandchildren, Sakoyia and Shanair Heath of Raleigh, Tajherek Rhodes of Windsor, her sister Odell Davis of Virginia and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. To the family she was known as "Shu". She was a soft spoken person, yet strong, a fighter to the very end. Funeral services were held at Speller's Chapel Disciples of Christ in Windsor on Saturday March 12, 2005 at 1 p.m. with Elder John Armstrong officiating. Cofield, 88, died March 5, 2005 at Bertie Memorial Hospital. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. John Second Baptist Church by the Rev. Willie Best. She was a member of Ashland Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband, Lenard J. Cofield of Merry Hill; two sons, Earnhart L. Winborne and Athaniel Winborne, both of Windsor; two daughters, Verlie Lanier of Williamston and Andrea Tomlin of Philadelphia, PA.; one brother, Willie C. Downey of Portsmouth, Va.; 26 grandchildren, 39great- grandchildren; and 16 great-great-grandchildren. GLENN M. JACKSON AULANDER - Glenn Mayo Jackson, 65, died Saturday, March 5, 2005, at his home. Mr. Jackson was born in Bertie County on January 5, 1940, the son of the late Dan and Katie Wilkins Jackson. He was a member of Aulander United Methodist Church, a graduate of Aulander High School, and served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Conflict. He loved trading horses, mules and the stock market. Glenn had worked for Blue Bell Pajama Factory, Brown Oil Company, Freeman Metal Products, Parker Monument Company, and Branch Funeral Home. He loved to work and faithfully visited his aunts and cousins as long as he was able. Mr. Jackson is survived by many cousins, Marilyn H. Dixon, David C. Hardee, Raleigh Joyner, Jr., Faye H. Swanson, Thomas W. "Tommy" Joyner; their children and grandchildren; and his faithful friend, Wilson Mitchell. Besides his parents and grandparents, he was predeceased by his beloved aunts, Cozette Jackson, Sarah W. Hopkins, Helen W. Joyner, and Lyndall Hardee; and uncles, Graden Jackson and Robert "Bob" Wilkins. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 9, 2005 at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, with the Rev. She was born in Bertie County, NC and moved to Cleveland, Ohio and married Edward Freeman, who predeceased her. She leaves to cherish her memory four sisters, Geneva Askew of Dorchester, Mass., Connie Cofield of Fayetteville, Ga., Blanche Riddick of Portsmouth, Va and Ruth Mallory of Suffolk; three brothers-in-law, one sister-in-law; and nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. LARRY STANLEY NEW ORLEANS, LA. - Larry Stanley, 50, a native of Bertie County, died March 5, 2005 at Sentara Complex, Hampton, VA. Stanley was a head counselor for Art of Great New Orleans and a member of Evening Star Missionary Baptist Church. DIANA L. PEELE KELFORD - Diane Lewter Peele, 92, died March 7, 2005 at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville. Our beloved mother and grandmother, Diana Marie Lewter Peele, was born to her parents, the late Reverend Charles Hannah Lewter and Lula Boone Lewter on May 4, 1912 Knowing her suffering, the Lord called Diana Home at age 92 on Monday, March 7, 2005. She was preceded in death by her five siblings: Theodore, Charlie, Peter, Sr., Elizabeth Lewter Brooks, and Rugh Lassiter Askew. Also preceding her in death were nine nieces and nephews: Lula, Verna, C.H., Hattie, Harold, Ann, Peggy Kay (her second daughter) and Tommie. She leaves to cherish her memory; one daughter, Diane Peele Kimbrough; two granddaughters, Assata Kimbrough Buffaloe and husband Eddie Buffaloe, Jr., and Jamila Kimbrough; one great-grandson, Aren Kimbrough Buffaloe; two step great-grandsons, Bryan and Michael Buffalow; and two godsons, Jeffrey Felton and Ray Felton. OUTLAW COLERAIN - Alton Leon Outlaw, 59, died March 9, 2005 at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville. CHESAPEAKE - Leslie B. Harden Sr., 87, formerly of the 800 block of Byrd Ave., passed away March 12, 2005. Born in Bertie County, NC, he was the son of the late William D. Harden and Modie B. Harden and was the widower of Eunice V. Harden. Leslie was a foreman for J.G. Wilson Corporation for more than 40 years. Survivors include his son, Leslie B. Harden Jr. of Chesapeake; his daughter, Vivian C. Chumley of Elizabeth City, NC; and four grandchildren. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday (March 15) in the Hillcrest Cemetery, Colerain, NC. Baker Pollard, 68, died at the Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie on Saturday, March 12, 2005. She was a native of Emporia Va. She was married to Donald Ray Baker, Sr. from 1953 to 1982. She was married to Theodore "Ted" Pollard from 1983 to 2004. Mrs. Pollard worked for the Newport News Shipyard in Newport News, VA for some eighteen years. She and Ted moved to Roxobel, NC in 1992 following retirement. Preceding her in death are her two husbands and her mother, Clara Elizabeth Rawls and her father, Frank King White. Survivors include her daughter, Connie Sue Mitchum and her husband Joseph of Tyler, TX; two sons, Donald Ray Baker, Jr. and his wife, Helen of Roxobel, NC and David Roy Baker and his wife, Jean of Gloucester, VA; her stepdaughter, Lori Marie Trievel and her husband, Tom of Norfolk, VA; and her stepson, Richard Allen Pollard and his wife, Joanne M. of Fort St. Lucie, Fl; two sisters, Annie Mae Castagna and Virginia Lee Jilcott, both of Tarboro, NC; two brothers, James White and his wife, May of Stem, NC and Charles White and his wife, Charlotte of Roxobel, NC. ELLA P. JERNIGAN WINDSOR - Ella Pritchard Jernigan, 89, a native of Bertie County, died March 14, 2005. She was the widow of Jay Lester Jernigan. She was born in Bertie County on January 11, 1916 to the late Tom and Fannie Jenkins Pritchard. Mrs. Jernigan was preceded in death by her husband Jay Lester Jernigan and daughter Judy Carrano. FREEMAN COLERAIN - Chester David Freeman, 74, a native of Bertie County, and of the 700 block of Sally Freeman Road, died March 14, 2005 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital. He was born December 30, 1921 in Bertie County. A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Wilder's Funeral Home Chapel, Aulander. Burial will be in the Cherry family cemetery, Aulander. Freeman was a retired machine operator for Coulbourn Lumber Co., Inc. He was a member of the Piney Woods Chapel Baptist Church. Survivors include two brothers, Bobby Freeman and James Freeman, both of Colerain; and a sister Mattie Watford of Colerain. JOHNNIE G. HARRELL JR AHOSKIE - Johnnie Gurley Harrell Jr., 79, of NC Hwy 461, died March 14, 2005, in Roanoke-Chowan Hospital. Mr. Harrell was born in Bertie County, a son of the late J.G. and Mary Overton Harrell. He was a member of Union Baptist Church, where he served as deacon and former Sunday School teacher. He was a former member and secretary of the Union Fire Department and a Wildlife Club. Johnnie had retired as head asphalt inspector with the North Carolina Department of Transportation. Survivors include his wife, Mary Liverman Harrell; a daughter, Nancy Harrell Gunnells of Conway; a son, John Robert Harrell of Cary; a sister, Ann Hollowell of Murfreesboro; a brother, Ray Harrell of Murfreesboro; two granddaughters, Kelly Peele Vann of Conway and Megan Gunnells of Ahoskie. He was predeceased by a granddaughter, Kayla Gunnells. A celebration of life will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, with the Rev. Randy Miller and the Rev. BEATRICE MOORE PORTSMOUTH - Beatrice Moore, 88, of the 2100 block of Chestnut St., died March 15, 2005, at DePaul Medical Center, Norfolk. Born in Lewiston, NC, she was a member of Luella Baptist Church in Lewiston and was the widow of Frank Moore. She is survived by three sisters, Etta Smith (William), Nadine Bunch, both of Portsmouth, and Marion Lightner (John) of New Jersey; two special nephews, William D. Smith and John Askew; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in Fisher Funeral Home Chapel, 1520 Effingham St. Portsmouth. JAMES GREENE JR WINDSOR - James Greene Jr., 72, died March 16, 2005. A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in Cedar Landing Baptist Church. Gilliam Funeral Home is in charge. He was the son of the late Kennie and James Greene and was born January 9, 1933 in Windsor. It was here he spent his youthful years in the Bertie County School System. Mr. Greene was a devoted member of the Cedar Landing Baptist Church. In 1950, James Greene married Eva Leary and relocated to New York. To this union two children were born. While in New York, he was employed as a construction worker under the Local 95 Union, which he retired from. In 1999, James Greene married Minnie Brown and relocated back to his birthplace. Upon his return to Windsor, he attended Cedar Landing Church where he was still a member. He continued to attend church until his health started to deteriorate. He leaves to cherish his memories, his wife Minnie Brown-Greene of Windsor, two children, Juanita Pugh and Curtis Greene, both of Windsor, one step-son, Tyrone Brown, one sister, Lucy Hoggard of Windsor, four brothers, Johnny Greene of Windsor, Edward Greene of St. Albanes, NY, William Greene of Peachtree, GA and David Greene of Brooklyn, NY, five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, his aunt, Emma Pugh of Windsor, a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends. IRMA HILLIARD RALEIGH - Irma Elizabeth Hilliard, a native of Roxobel, died March 16, 2005 at City of Oaks Rehabilitation Center, Raleigh. She was the widow of Richard Alford Hilliard. Lauderdale, Fl; sister, Violet Harrell Williams of Ahoskie; a brother, Karl Harrell of Tennessee; nine half-siblings; four grandchildren; four great- grandchildren. Mrs. Hilliard served as a Pink Lady at Raleigh Memorial Duke Hospital for many years and also crocheted blankets for cancer patients in hospital. Freeman Sr., 62, died March 18, 2005, at Albermarle Hospital. Mr. Freeman, born in Bertie County, NC, was the son of David M. and the late Ruth M. Freeman. Mr. Freeman, a graduate of Elizabeth City State University in 1961, was the owner and operator of Walson Funeral Home in Elizabeth City. He is survived by his wife, Mabel B. Freeman; one son, David C. Freeman Jr.; two daughters, Demetria F. Davis and Monique F. Jones, DVM; his father, David M. Freeman; two brothers, Howard L. Freeman and the Rev. William M. Freeman; and nine grandchildren. A funeral will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Cornerstone Missionary Baptist Church, Elizabeth City. Remains will lie in repose form 11 a.m. to the time of service. MARGARET BRYANT KNIGHT CHESAPEAKE - Margaret Bryant "Peggy" Knight passed away at her son's home in Maryland on March 19, 2005. Monna, as she was known by her grandchildren and many of her family, was born in Roxobel, NC, moved to Norfolk where she married Bill, her husband of 55 years and later moved to Chesapeake. She retired from civil service and kept up with many of her friends. She was a longtime active member of Squires Memorial Presbyterian Church in Norfolk, where she served as an elder and chairman of the Membership Committee. She was also an active member of many clubs, such as her church circle, The Newcomer's Club, the NSC Luncheon Group, Young at Heart and a pinochle group. Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, William E. Knight III, her mother and father; and two brothers. She is survived by a loving son, William E. "Billy" Knight IV and wife Rebecca of Upper Marlboro, Md.; six precious grandchildren; A great- grandchild; her twin sister, Marie B. Lytle of Chesapeake; sister Alice B. Dupree of Kill Devil Hills, NC; sister-in-law, Marian Bryant; nephew, Chuck Leach and wife Sharon of Virginia Beach; her former daughter in law, Barbara Knight of Kensington, Md., the mother of three of Peggy's granddaughters; and a host of other relatives and friends. Mr. Bryant was born March 15, 1948 and was the son of the late James Henry Bryant and Maggie Sue Futrell Bryant. Mr. Bryant worked for many years with the NC Dept of Correction. At the time of his retirement, he was a Staff Sergeant, with the North Carolina National Guard, He also served in the US Army during the Vietnam War. HORACE CLENT BAZEMORE Horace Clent Bazemore, 63, passed away quietly on Tuesday, March 22, 2005 at Mary Immaculate Hospital, Newport News, Virginia. His parents, Luther and Bessie Bazemore, and a brother, James C. Bazemore, preceded him in death. He was born in Lewiston, North Carolina, where he attended public school. He graduated in the "Ain't No Stopping Us Now" Class of 1959, where he met most of his lifetime friends. Horace joined Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Windsor, NC at an early age. He was employed at the Newport News Shipyard until his health caused him to retire. Left to cherish his memories are" two children, Wesley Williams (Demertria) of Hampton, VA. And Kimberly Washington (William), also of Hampton, VA; five grandchildren, two sisters, Marva B. Farrish and Laverne Britt, both of Hampton, Va., and a host of other relatives and friends. EDDIE LUTHER MORRIS Eddie Luther Morris, 53, died Wednesday, March 23, 2005 in Duke University Medical Center. Mr. Morris was born in Bertie County on November 30, 1951 to the late Carrie Belle Hoggard Morris and Aubrey Wilson Morris, Sr. He was a former employee of Proctor & Gamble, Inc. and a member of Bethany Baptist Church. MARGARET BERNICE CHERRY Margaret Bernice Smallwood Cherry was all of the above to everyone she touched. She entered into eternal life on Monday, March 28, 2005, when her season here on earth ended. Born July 5, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Atha and Jessie Smallwood. She began her education at the Indian Woods School and continued at W.S. Etheridge High School. She joined Indian Woods Missionary Baptist Church at an early age and remained until her passing. She was a member of the Senior Choir. On October 16, 1948, she was united in marriage to her husband and soul mate, Morse R. Cherry, Sr. They were blessed with four children. Everyone she met enjoyed her love and warm spirit. Her willingness to work unselfishly in her community and church was evident in her affiliations and friends. She was a member of the Excelsior Temple #692, Willing Workers Fez Club #70, District #2 Elks, County State President Council, Former Tri County GRAND DAUGHTER RULER CIRCLE. She was a mentor and leader while a part of Boy Scouts (89) Cub Scouts (82) and Young at Heart. Her legacy will be carried on in memories by her husband, Morse R. Cherry Sr., of the home; three daughters, Ether Gilbert of West End, NX, Rita Cherry of Atlanta, GA, Ann Cherry of Hempstead, NY; one son, Morse Cherry Jr.; four grandchildren, Cosgrove Gilbert of West End, NC, Kirtley Gilbert of Atlanta, GA, Tandia Freeman of Windsor, NC, Glendia Williams of Atlanta, GA and Tarin Cherry of Greenville, NC; six great-grandchildren, Khadijah, Davontee, Michelle, and Jayla; four sisters, Lottie Smallwood of Windsor, NC, Catherine Speller of Atlanta, GA, Irene Ruffin of Atlantic City, NJ, and Elaine Harrell of Newark, NJ; one aunt, Sarah Smith of Brooklyn, NY and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Mr. Peede was born on February 12, 1936 to the late Oscar and Blanche Newsome Peede and was predeceased by two brothers, Oscar and Tom Peede and one sister Garret Mizelle. JOSEPH WAYLAND VAUGHAN Joseph Wayland Vaughan, a native of Bertie County, died March 28, 2005. He retired from Newport News Shipbuilding in 1982 with 38 years of service. He was a graduate of Lewiston Woodville High School, class of 1937. He is survived by three daughters, five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Mr. Mizelle was born in Bertie County on December 23, 1934 to the late Stephen T. and Mary Miller Mizelle and was predeceased by a brother, Linwood Mizelle. Graham was a proud farmer, a member of Colerain Baptist Church and former President of the Colerain Lion's Club. EURE AHOSKIE - Alice Faye Pierce Eure, 59, a native of Bertie County, died March 31, 1005, in Roanoke Chowan Hospital. Mrs. Eure was a member of Mars Hill Baptist Church and Woodmen of the World. She was a graduate of Bertie High School and was retired from the binding department at Pierce Printers. Survivors include her husband, Bobby Eure; a son John Eure of Murfreesboro; three brothers, Jimmy Pierce and Joe Pierce, both of Macon, GA, and Charlie Pierce of Menola; and three granddaughters. CROOMS WINDSOR (March 31, 2005) Betsy Smallwood Crooms was born on April 5, 1922 n Indian Woods, NC to Richard Smallwood and Nancy Smallwood Bond. She attended school in Bertie County and graduated from W.S. Etheridge School in Windsor. As a child, her parents instilled strong Christian values. She was baptized at Indian Woods Baptist Church. Betsy relocated to New York where she met and married Frank Crooms of Hastings, FL on November 10, 1946. She worked at Pap Garments and was a talented seamtress who often designed clothing for her children. Betsy fulfilled her desire to help others by successfully completing a nursing assistant program. Betsy was a tireless wife, a loving mother of five children, the late Gene Angel, Barbara, Tina, Frank, and Vernal. "Mom" was a true reflection of a Godly woman. She offered words of wisdom and a sense of security to her family. She was a pillar of strength, a woman of dignity and a lady of distinction. We are all blessed for having known her. She leaves to cherish her memory her four children, Barbara Johnson, Tina Nelson, Frank Crooms Jr., and Vernal Crooms-Holder, eight grandchildren, Monica, Nicole, Gene, Jenea, Cherly, Krystle, Philip, and Maya; three great-grandchildren, Kamau, Genecia and Jalen, two sisters, Annie Williams and Pollie Lee Capehart, one brother, David Smallwood and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.
