A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church, Lewiston-Woodville, by Dr. James Baughan. Burial will be in the Hoggard Memorial Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lewiston- Woodville Rescue Squad or the American Heart Association. Massey Funeral Home, Aulander, is in charge. Peele was a retired machinist and farmer and a member of Lewiston Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Sharon Boswell Peele; his daughters, Justa Peele and Maria Peele, both of the home; three sisters, Gloria Moore of Wilson, Bonnie Peele of Greenville and Donna White of Askewville; and one grandson. MAGGIE S. SWANN CHESAPEAKE, VA - Maggie Gray Smithwick Swann, 79, a native of Merry Hill, died May 1, 2004. A funeral was conducted Monday in Loving Funeral Home, Churchland Chapel, by Dr. Mel Kunkle. Interment was in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to her church, Taylor road Baptist church, 2509 Taylor Road, Chesapeake, VA 23321 or to Bon Secours, Maryview Hospice Program. Mrs. Swann was a member of Taylor Road Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband, William G. Swann; three sisters, Gladys Swadley, Ethel Mae Cole, and Dorothy Stanton; and a brother, Edward Smithwick. MILTON E. HALL MERRY HILL - Milton Ellsworth. Hall, 77, died May 2, 2004. He was the son of James Alfred Hall and Maggie S. Hall and was born November 15, 1926 in Merry Hill, NC. He attended the public schools of Bertie County and worked for many years in the construction trade in the city of Philadelphia before moving back to Merry Hill with his wife of fifty-eight years. He was one of few black men to step out on faith by opening a business, Hall's General Store, in Merry Hill, NC, which he managed very well. He joined Peterson Chapel Missionary Baptist Church at an early age. After residing in Philadelphia for many years, he returned to Peterson Chapel where he was Chairman of the Deacon Board, a Trustee, President of the Usher Board, Assistant Superintendent of Sunday School, and President of the Male Choir. In 1999, Peterson Chapel presented him with a Certificate of Achievement for being the oldest active Deacon. In 2002, he was presented a Certificate of Recognition for dedicated service as chairman, and in 2003, Peterson Chapel presented him a plaque in recognition of 15 years dedicated service. He leaves to cherish his memories; his loving wife of fifty-eight years, Ethel C. Hall; four daughters, Yvonne Moorehead, Diann Bolden, Fay Tindal of Philadelphia, PA and Brenda Hall of Southfield, MI; four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, three sisters, Margaret M White, Miriam Burrell, and Estella Simons; three brothers, William Hall, Dennie Hall, and Samuel A. MURFREESBORO - William Jordan Lassiter Jr., 64, a native of Bertie County, died May 2, 2004, at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Massey Funeral Home, Aulander, by the Rev. Robert May and the Rev. Steven Curry. JOSHUA SPELLER SR WINDSOR - Joshua Speller Sr. was the fourth of nine children born to the late Tom and Mattie Craig Speller. He was born on November 10, 1938 and departed this life on May 2, 2004. "Lil Bro" was given the nickname "Lil Bro" by his parents because he was very small in size. His children affectionately called him "Josh". Joshua was educated in the Public Schools of Bertie County and was well known and liked by many. He married his childhood sweetheart, the late Sarah Jane Speller and was the father of four children. He relocated to New York and worked at Design Craft as a steel craftsman for 25 years. Josh was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He treasured his grandchildren and loved babysitting his granddaughter Tiayjsha Speller. He leaves to cherish his memories; one daughter, Jennifer Louise Speller of the home, three sons, Joshua Speller, Jr. of Ahoskie, NC, Jerry M. Bond of South Hill, VA, and Larry Mitchell of Windsor, NC, his mother-in-law Bettie Green of Manhatten, NY, three sisters Martha Speller Jones, Luhazel Speller Bunch of Windsor, NC, and Elsie Speller Williams of Manhatten, NY, two brothers, Curley Bradshaw Speller of Windsor, NC and Tom Speller Jr. of Apoka, FL; seven grandchildren, one great-grandchild. FREEMAN COLERAIN - Dorothy Peele Freeman, 77, a native of Bertie County, died May 3, 2004, at Bertie Memorial Hospital. She was a member of the Eastern Star, deaconess and missionary. ISMAEL BRONX, NY - Alfred A. Outlaw Ismael of Bronx, NY died May 3, 2004. He was a counselor for Greenwich Housing Support Staff and did medical billings in New York. He is survived by his parents Lottie Walton Isma-el and Hendricks Isma-el of Whaleyville, VA, two sisters Althea Reed of Norfolk, VA and Jessica Isam-el of Whaleyville. Burial will follow at the church cemetery in Lewiston, NC. GREGORY WIGGINS WATERBURY, CONN - Gregory Wiggins, a native of Bertie County, NC, died May 4, 2004. A funeral will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. in Reynolds Funeral Home, Ahoskie, NC. EUGENE SESSOMS BOND Eugene Sessoms Bond (Penny) was the son of the late Henry and Willie Bond. He was born in Bertie County on November 3, 1931 and departed this life at Mariner Nursing Home on May 26, 2004 in Lawrence, Massachusetts. He was educated in the public schools of Bertie County. Penny was employed at Malden Mill in Massachusetts for more that 40 years. He joined Spellers Chapel Disciples Church at an early age before he relocated to Massachuetts. He leaves to cherish his memory three children, Eugene Bond of Youngstown, Ohio, Tommie Gene Bond also of Youngstown, Ohio, Prenora Morris of Colerain, five sisters, Mary Smallwood, Alice Cox, Rachael Hill and Katherine Pugh of Windsor; Willie Ann Bond of Middletown, Connecticut, six brothers, Moses, Henry, and Charlie all of Windsor; Jessie of Williamston, and William David of Middletown, Connecticut, Robert Bond who preceded him in death. Eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. PEARL B. BERRY WINDSOR - Pearl B. Berry, 97, of the 600 block of Grabtown Road, died May 8, 2004. She was born April 15, 1907 to the late Charlie Bond and Clara Dudley Bond. She was the eldest of eleven children. Her siblings preceded her in death. Pearly, as she was so fondly called, attended Bertie County public schools. At an early age she joined Beacon Light Baptist Church. Pearly was united in marriage to the late Eason berry and to that union four children were born. Pearly came from a family of hard workers. She loved working in her garden, spending time with her family and fishing. She leaves to cherish her memory two daughters, Priscilla Joyner and Clara Speller, both of Windsor, nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, a host of nieces and nephews, relatives and friends. Her sons, Eason Berry Jr. and Roman Berry preceded her in death. A funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. in Beacon Light Baptist Church with Rev. Frank Hyman officiating. FREEMAN POWELLSVILLE - Rosebud Drake Freeman, 89, a native of Bertie County, died May 9, 2004, at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville. Mrs. Freeman was a homemaker. ROBERT BAZEMORE LEWISTON-WOODVILLE - Robert Wayland Bazemore, 94, of the 100 block of Piney Woods Road, a native of Bertie County, died May 9, 2004 at Guardian Care Nursing Home, Ahoskie. Memorial donations may be made to Lewiston Woodville Fire Department. Bazemore was a retired farmer and merchant. He was a member of St. Francis United Methodist Church. He was also a member of Davie Masonic Lodge #39 A.F.& A.M. and a Navy veteran of WWII. Survivors include his wife, Romona Jernigan Bazemore; three stepdaughters, Alice Pittman of Windsor, Virginia Ward and Jean McCain, both of Oriental; two stepgrandchildren; and two stepgreat grandchildren. WILLIAM BAZEMORE WASHINGTON DC - William Eddie Bazemore, 91, a native of Bertie County, died May 9, 2004 at his residence. A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Luella Baptist Church. MARY PENELOPE JAMES DOUGLAS Mary Penelope James Douglas, 82, a native of Bertie County, died on May 13, 2004 at her residence in Harrellsville, NC. She is survived by her children, David Douglas of Harrellsville, Zearl L. Watson of Brooklyn, NC, Ruby E. Briggs of Wyandanch, NY and Lois B. Winborne of Edenton, NC, thirteen grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren. The funeral was held on Sunday, May 16 at 4:00 p.m. at Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Fred Wiggins delivering the eulogy. Burial followed in the church cemetery. A wake was held o Saturday, May 15 from 5 to 8 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Services of comfort were entrusted to Hertford County Undertakers. JACQUELINE C. DAVIS COLERAIN - Jacqueline Curling Davis, 65, of the 200 block of East River Road, died May 14, 2004. She was born in Norfolk to the late Curtis Lionel and Miriam Webster Curling. She was also predeceased by brother, James E. Curling. She was the wife of Victor Lynn Davis Jr. of the home. Besides her husband, Mrs Davis is survived by a son, Victor Lynn Davis III and wife, Denise of Wanchese, NC; two daughters, Robin Leigh Davis of Chapel Hill, NC, and Jill Marie Szalaj and husband, Jeff of Garner, NC; a sister Carol Curling Ransdell of Virginia Beach; and five grandchildren. AYSCUE AHOSKIE - Roy Earl Ayscue, 64, a native of Bertie County and a resident of Ahoskie House, died May 14, 2004, in Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville. He was born in Bertie County on August 14, 1939 to the late Haywood Lee and Lizzie Hoggard Ayscue. A funeral was conducted Monday at Walker Funeral Home Chapel, Windsor, by the Rev. J.R. Thomas. Burial was in Stoney Creek Cemetery. The family received friends from 7:00-8:00 p.m. on Sunday May 16 at Walker Funeral Home and at other times from the home of Dorothy Copeland. Ayscue was a farmer before retirement. Survivors include a daughter, Rebecca Lynn Ayscue of Greenville; a son Kenneth Earl Ayscue of Rocky Mount' a sister, Dorothy A. Copeland of Windsor; a brother, Robert Lee Ayscue of Concord; and four grandchildren. EMMIE WHITE ASKEW Emmie White Askew, 95, died Friday, May 14, 2004. She was born to the late Martin Lafayette and Claude Todd White in Windsor on June 12, 1908. Her husband, William Askew and son William "Bill" Askew Jr. preceded her in death. She loved her church and community. Mrs. Askew was the oldest surviving member of Dortches Baptist Church. Mrs. Askew had a private showing of her paintings several years ago at the Cultural Arts Center in Nashville. She is survived by a daughter, Betty Jane Tharrington of Greenville, seven grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and special in-laws. A gathering to celebrate her life was held on May 16, 2004 at Rocky Mount Memorial Park with Dr. Chet Rains officiating. Arrangements were made by Johnson Funerals and Cremations of Rocky Mount. TOMMY ROGERSON AULANDER - Tommy Lee Rogerson, 86, a native of Bertie County, died May 16, 2004 at Guardian Care of Ahoskie. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Garrett Funeral Home by the Rev. Paul Edwards. Interment will be in Job Cemetery. Rogerson was a retired longshoreman and a US Army veteran having served in World War II. Survivors include nieces and nephews. LEWIS CARTER WINDSOR - Lewis Carter, 94, a native of Bertie County, died May 21, 2004 at Bertie Memorial Hospital. He was born on September 20, 1908 from the union of the late William and Sweetie Carter in Windsor, NC. During his formative years, he attended Bertie Academy. As a young man, he relocated to Norfolk, VA where he was gainfully employed at the Naval Shipyard for a number of years. Upon his return to Windsor, NC he met and married Emeline Cherry who preceded him in death. From this union no children were born. With great fervor and astuteness, he embarked upon a career as a building contractor where he not only constructed sound buildings, but he also encountered, influenced, and built many lives through his generosity and his palatable personality. Using his talents to bring glory to God, he served as the general contractor for the New Cedar Landing Missionary Baptist Church, becoming a blessing to the church. Lewis's Christian walk was untainted as he served as a devoted trustee, treasurer, and member of the Cedar Landing Male Chorus. He was always dutiful to his church obligation, serving as a faithful member until his demise. Lewis was preceded in death by his wife; five brothers, Andrew, William, Soloman, Joseph, and Wade; seven sisters, Meta Small, Sarah Carter Goode, Frankie Carter Barnes, Johanna Carter Wilson, Mary Carter Bond, Annie Carter Bond and Penny Carter Small. He leaves to cherish his memory and to carry on his legacy one son, Rev. Zachariah Wilson, two grandchildren, Christy and JeLisa Wilson, a long devoted companion, Mrs. Mable Outlaw, a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. BLAND ROCKY MOUNT - John Henry Bland, 56, a native of Lewiston, died May 22, 2004 at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville. A funeral was conducted Wednesday at Bowling Funeral Home, Rocky Mount. MARGARET FUTRELL MURFREESBORO - Margaret Baggett Futrell, 56, a native of Bertie County, died May 22, 2004, at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville. A funeral was conducted Tuesday at Massey Funeral Home, Aulander, by the Rev. Robert Baggett. Burial was in Ahoskie Cemetery. Survivors include her husband, Carroll Futrell Jr; daughters, Candy Hall, Kim Christina Futrell and Crystal Dawn Futrell of Kunsan Air Base, Korea; sister, Shirley Baggett Deans of Ahoskie; three brothers, Curtis Earl Baggett of McCormick, SC, Talmadge Eugene Brown Sr. of Roanoke Rapids and Stanley Ray Baggett of Murfreesboro; and nine grandchildren. LUELLA WILLIAMS WINDSOR - On May 24, 2004, the Lord in his infinite way called Luella B. Williams (Sug) home to eternal rest. Luella was born to the late William H. and Roxanna Bond of Windsor, NC on February 28, 1917. She joined Cedar Fork Church of God at an early age. In 1944, she moved to Brooklyn, NY, where she was later joined in Holy Matrimony to Earl Williams. She later returned to Windsor, NC and continued her service with Bazemore Temple Church of God in Christ, formerly known as Cedar Fork Church of God in Christ. She served as a devoted member on the "Mother's Board" until her health failed. She leaves to cherish her memory her devoted husband of fifty eight years, Earl Williams, two children, Thomas Earl Williams and Barbara Williams, ten grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, two sisters, Queen Gordon and Ollie King, one brother, William Bond, two brothers- in-law, and one sister-in-law, a host of loving nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends that were devoted to her. GILBERT HENDRICKS SR. AULANDER - Gilbert Hendricks Sr., 72, a native of South Boston, VA, died May 25, 2004, at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital. A funeral will be conducted at 8 p.m. Saturday at Wilder's Funeral Home Chapel, Aulander. Burial will follow at 1 p.m. Sunday at Rose Garden Cemetery, South Boston. Survivors include his wife, Marie Parker of the home; three sons Gilbert Hendricks Jr. and Kelvin Wynn, both of Bronx, NY and Derrick Smith of Philadelphia, PA; seven daughters, Darlene Barksdale of California, Vanessa Tyler and Karen Wynn, both of Manhatten, Leslie Wynn of Bronx, Sherita Foreman of Richmond, Jackie and Stephanie, both of Phildelphia; and a host of grandchildren. MARIE LASSITER COLERAIN - Marie Lassiter, 84, died May 27, 2004, in her residence. Mrs. Lassiter was born July 23, 1919 in Aulander, NC, a daughter of the late James Caudie Davidson and Ethel Bozeman Davidson. The widow of Robert Edward Lassiter, she was a homemaker and a longtime and active member of Colerain Baptist Church. Surviving are her son, Dr. Richard Lassiter and wife Mary of Chapel Hill, NC' daughter Carolyn Jenkins and husband Donald of Wilmington, NC' grandchildren, Cathy Marie Hartley, Ed Pierce, Leigh Hall, Anne Kapeluck, Rob Lassiter and Kate Lassiter; great grandchildren, Robbie Hall, Emmaly Hartley, Russell Hall, Richard Hall, Rachel Hall, Eliza Kapeluck, Branwell Kapeluck and Crevans Kapeluck; sisters, Fannie Carlisle of Norfolk, June Culpepper of Portsmouth and Shirley of Florida. Mrs. Lassiter was predeaceased by her son, Russell Lafayette Lassiter; brothers and sisters, Nellie Cowan, William Davidson, Hubert Davidson, Jessie Davidson, Helen Monroe, Sarah Elliott, George Davidson, and Jim Davidson. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Colerain Baptist Church with the Rev. Garland Cline and the Rev. Rob Hall. Interment will be in Highland Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie. Memorials may be sent to Colerain Baptist Church or to the American Heart Association. MARY ASKEW AULANDER - Mary Askew, died May 28, 2004 at her residence. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Conoconary Baptist Church, Aulander, by the Rev. Alton Edwards. Survivors include three sons, Alexander Askew of Smithfield, Va., Calvin Wade Askew of Ahoskie and Ricky Askew of Greensboro; two daughters, Mary Ann Futrell of Hampton and Joyce M. Edwards of Norfolk; two sisters, Nonnie Bea Cherry of Suffolk and Ella Mae Saunders of Wilmington; 21 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. MICHAEL L. WILSON COLERAIN - Michael Lee Wilson, 34, of Colerain, NC died on May 28, 2004 at his residence. Hr was born in Bertie County on January 27, 1970. He was a farmer and a member of Wynn's Grove Baptist Church. He is survived by his mother Dora Wilson of Colerain, his father John Lee Wilson of Colerain, two daughters, Shattericks Slade of Colerain and Alexus Wilson of Ahoskie, one brother, Cardell Wilson of Killeen, TX, his grandparents, Herman and Agnes Moody of Colerain, two grandchildren, Ja'Keise Freeman and Kei'Asia Watson of Colerain, ten aunts, four uncles, a special friend Catherine Miller and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at Wynn's Grove Baptist Church on Saturday, June 5, 2004 at 1:00 p.m. with Bishop Thomas Lee officiating. He departed this life May 28, 2004. Fat Albert was born and raised in Bertie County. He was a very nice guy who was always known to greet the ladies with "What's Up Pretty Ladies?" He leaves to morn his father, William T. Rascoe, Sr of Lewiston, NC, his fiancée, Teresa Wiggins; six children, Jaz'neek, Jonnell and Antonio, all of Rocky Mount, NC; Alonzo Jr and Janeekqua, both of Newport News, VA and Jasmine of Williamston, NC; four brothers, William Jr. of Newport News, VA, Willie K. of Elizabeth City, NC, Gregory of Roxobel, NC, and Larry of Aulander, NC; thirteen sisters, Annie Cherry Rose of Lewiston, NC, Lacie of Kelford, NC, Priscilla, Tassie, Valerie, Alice, Nancy all of Windsor, NC; Doretha of Bronx, NY, Valerie Thompson of Aulander, NC, Betty Powell of Newport News, VA, Candance of Rich Square, NC; his mother, Lacie Rascoe and sister Emma Ruth, both preceded him in death. He will be missed by a host of nieces and nephews, loving aunts, uncles, and friends that loved him so much. Cherry's Funeral Homes was in charge of the arrangements. JOSEPH E. RAYNOR SUFFOLK VA - Joseph Edward Raynor, 95, a native of Powellsville, died May 29, 2004 in Ovici Hospital. He was the widower of Christine Biitner Raynor. A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens with Dr. David Chauncey. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Diabetes Association, Nansemond Suffolk Volunteer Rescue Squad, or a charity of one's choice. Harrell and Hill Funeral Home is in charge. Survivors include two nephews and a niece. GEORGE ARTHUR VEALE George Arthur Veale, departed this life on Sunday, May 30, 2004 in Roanoke Chowan Hospital. He was born to the late Richard and Tamma Veale on November 28, 1904 in the Veale Field area of Lewiston, North Carolina. He was the youngest of eight children, all of whom preceded him in death. George attended Bertie County Schools. Later in life he met and married Maggie Outlaw on November 25, 1923. To this union six children were born into this family, one son and five daughters and one adopted daughter. George and Maggie also raised Daisy V. Cherry, William R. Veale, and Mary V. Smith, all of whom preceded him in death and Flossie V. Wilkins of Lewiston, NC, Florence V. Lee of Aulander, NC and Fannie V. Thompson and Mary Ellen Thompson both of Lewiston, NC. George and Maggie also raised four grandchildren, Audrey Jean Ingram, Carolyn V. Higgs, and Lisa Carr all of Atlantic City, NJ and Nelson Veale of Lewiston, NC. He was also the father of Sammy Cherry of Windsor, NC. George joined Mt Olive Baptist Church at an early age. Later in his elderly years, he rededicated his life under the leadership of Rev. William Davis, where he remained faithful until his health failed. George leaves to cherish his memory; three daughters, one son, one adopted daughter, thirty two grandchildren, forty-nine great grandchildren, nineteen great-great- grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church on Friday, June 4, 2004 at 1:00 p.m. with the Rev. William L. Davis officiating.
