Mrs. Harrell was born in Bertie County, a daughter of the late William Evans, Sr. and Mamie Fairless Evans. She was a member of Powellsville Baptist Church and was a retired sales clerk for Belk Tyler Company. She is survived by a daughter, Rose Marie Asbell and husband Thomas of Powellsville, a son William Harrell and wife Denise of Colerain, a sister, Edith Freeman of Blacksburg, VA, grandchildren, Thomas Asbell II, Joan Bundy, Michael Harrell, Stacy Harrell, great grandchildren Ava Grace Asbell, Emerson Asbell, Conrad Asbell, Taylor Bundy, Jenna Bundy, and Dylan Harrell. Mrs. Harrell was predeceased by her husband Riddick D. Harrell. A funeral service was held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 10, 2005 at Garrett Funeral Home in Ahoskie with the Rev. Ed. Davis and Rev. RIDDICK COLERAIN - Dora Elena Riddick, died May 8, 2005, at his residence. Riddick was a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church in Colerain; three sisters, Anna Slade, Novella Riddick and Daisy Leary all of Colerain; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. A funeral is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday, May 14 at Zion Hill Baptist Church with Rev. Nathaniel Thompson officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. Reynolds Funeral Home is in charge. NEZZIE P. HASTE ELIZABETH CITY - Nezzie Perry Haste, 89, died Sunday morning, May 8, 2005, in Carolina House of Elizabeth City. A native of Bertie County, she was the widow of Thomas Erie Haste Sr. and the daughter of the late Thomas and Lula Morris Perry. Mrs. Haste was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church in Elizabeth City. Survivors include two daughters, Chrystal Towe and husband Clifford P. of Hertford, Faye Lewis and husband Stanley P. of Williamsburg; one son, T. Erie Haste Jr. and wife Suzanne of Hertford; one sister-in-law, Bessie H. McKee and husband Paul of Raleigh; 11 grandchildren and 11 great- grandchildren. A funeral will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Swindell Funeral and Cremation Services. Burial will follow in Cedar Wood Cemetery. EDNA PARKER WHITAKER Edna Parker Whitaker, 89, died Monday, May 9, 2005 in Roanoke Chowan Hospital. Mrs. Whitaker was born in Bertie County and was a lifetime member of Connaritsa Baptist Church and the Women's Missionary Union. Survivors include her husband, Frank Whitaker, two sons, Carl Whitaker and wife Carroll of Suffolk, Larry Whitaker and wife Barbara of Raleigh, two sisters, Lucille Sylvia of Suffolk, Va, Evelyn Byrd of Aulander, a brother Roy Parker of Aulander, four grandchildren, Debora Brown, Amy Scott, Derek Whitaker, and Bradley Whitaker, and five great grandchildren. Funeral services were held at Connaritsa Baptist Church on May 10, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Hines Adams officiating. Burial followed in Aulander Cemetery. REX HARDY MELTON Rex Hardy Melton, 83, of Bronx, NY died on May 9, 2005 in Veterans Hospital in Bronx, NY. He was born on December 26, 1922 in Bertie County. He was a retired barber. He is survived by his wife, Lucrecy "Lucy" Melton of Bronx, his children, Columbian Amedee, Ricardo Amedee, and Michelle Amedee, all of Bronx, his grandchildren, Natasha Amedee, Omar Amedd, Terryanna Amedee, Shawana Amedee, Randy Amedee, Kevin Amedee, and Jamine Amedee, all of Bronx, his brothers, William Melton of Ahoskie, and Linwood Melton of Aulander, his sisters, Betty Jean Melton of Windsor, Ethel Marie Balance of Aulander, Louise Whitaker of Hampton, VA, and Elizabeth Cameron of Hartford, CT, and special friends. Funeral services were held at Aulander First Baptist Church in Aulander on Saturday, May 21, 2005 at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Stevie Lawrence officiating. JOHN NORBERT LEWTER John Norbert Lewter, 65, of Ahoskie, NC died on May 10, 2005 at his residence. He was born on July 28, 1939 in Bertie County. He was a member of Conoconary Baptist Church in Aulander. He was a veteran of the US Army, a former police officer with the Ahoskie Police Department, and a retired supervisor for Newport News Shipyard. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Simmons Lewter of the home, his mother, Lilliam Cherry of Hexalena, his children, Sharlene Flood of Upper Marlboro, MD, Troy Lewter of Los Angeles, CA, and Erica Lewter of Ahoskie, his brothers, Henry Lewter of Richmond, VA, Soloman Cherry, Jr. and Joseph Cherry, both of Hampton, VA, his sisters, Elaine Cherry of Kelford, Diane Calloway of Richmond and Peggy Ann Leary of Patterson, NJ, grandchildren, Maya Flood, Mason Flood, and Jaylen Williams, aunts, Annie Ruth Sessoms of Colerain, and Shirley Johnson of Ossining, NY, uncles, Sherman Cherry of Atlanta, Ga and Foy Cherry of Ossining. MURIEL JERNIGAN PERRY COLERAIN - Muriel Jernigan Perry, 72, of the 200 block of Elm Grove Road, died May 12, 2005. ANNIE PROUT COLERAIN - Annie Slade Prout of Colerain died Monday, May 16, 2005 in Colerain. She is survived by one brother, Mario Chamblee Slade of Ahoskie and three sisters, Ollie Slade Lee of Colerain, Carolyn Slade Watford of Portsmouth, Va. and Ivory Slade Jordan of Ahoskie. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 21 at Wynns Grove Baptist Church in Colerain with the Rev. Thomas Lee officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Reynolds Funeral Home, Ahoskie, is in charge of arrangements. DAVID LEE RANKINS David Lee Rankins, 86, of Edenton, NC, died on May 17, 2005 in Chowan Hospital in Edenton. He was born on February 22, 1919 in Bertie County. He was a member of Ashland Missionary Baptist Church of Merry Hill. He is survived by his daughter, Janice Arnold of Baltimore, MC and one grandchild. Funeral services were held at Whosoever Will Church of God in Christ in Edenton, NC on Saturday, May 21, 2005 with Rev. Willie J. Best officiating. OUTLAW COLERAIN - Annie Marie Outlaw, 74, a native of Bertie County, died May 18, 2005, at Guardian Care of Ahoskie. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hertford County Undertakers Chapel, Winton. Burial will be in the Sessoms family cemetery, Colerain. Survivors include one son, Russell Outlaw of Colerain; one brother, David Harrell of Suffolk, VA.; and three grandchildren. MARY GAYLORD COLERAIN - Mary Gaylord died in Greenville, N.C., May 18, 2005. She is survived by two sons, Joe Gaylord Jr. of Colerain; Leon Gaylord of Brooklyn, NY; two daughters, Clara McGlohne of Ahoskie; Cora Smallwood of New York, NY; one sister, Martha Sessoms of Ahoskie; 10 grandchildren, five great- grandchildren and one great-greatgrandchilden. A graveside service will take place at 12 noon, Tuesday, May 24, 2005, at Hillcrest Cemetery, with the Rev. Patrick Young officiating. In case of rain, the service will be conducted at Reynolds Funeral Home Chapel. Reynolds Funeral Home, Ahoskie, is handling the arrangements. JOHN MICHAEL THOMAS SR. John Michael Thomas Sr., 84, died Tuesday, May 24, 2005 at his home. Mr. Thomas was born in Bertie County on March 6, 1921 to the late Jeppy and Daisy Thomas and was predeceased by his wife, Mary Iris Thomas, and a sister Bessie Senn. He was a member of Republican Baptist Church, a farmer and World War II Army Veteran. A graveside funeral service was held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 26, 2005 at Edgewood Cemetery by the Rev. David Thompson. Military rites were observed. He is survived by his daughter, Cindy Massey and Kay Thomas, both of Windsor, his son J. Michael Thompson Jr. of Windsor, his sisters Daisy Younce of Washington and Helen Hoggard of Aulander, and his grandchildren Katie and Jobie Thomas of Windsor. Mizelle, 73, died Thursday, May 27, 2005 at Bertie Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Mizelle was born on August 31, 1931 to the late William and Delcie Hoggard. She was predeceased by a brother, Ethan Mizelle. Inetta was a member of Elm Grove Baptist Church and retired from Perdue. She loved to organize senior trips for her community. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 29, 200-5 at Elm Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Preston Jernigan and the Rev. Freddie Harris. Burial followed in Edgewood Cemetery, Windsor. She is survived by her husband Eugene Mizelle of Colerain, jer sons Michael Mizelle and Ronnie Mizelle, both of Colerain, her sisters, Christine Cowand of Merry Hill and Lillian Evans of Chesapeake, VA, her brother, William "Billy" Mizelle of Colerain, and her grandchildren, Leslie and Joshua Mizelle of Colerain. MILDRED CHAMBLEE Funeral services for Mildred Chamblee, 72, of Colerain were held on Saturday, May 28, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. at Saint Luke Pentecostal Healing Temple, Lewiston, NC. HELEN WHITE EVANS Helen White Evans, 87, died Saturday, May 28, 2005, at her home. Mrs. Evans was born in Bertie County on October 18, 1917 to the late Durant Ceaton and Bertha Baker White and was predeceased by her husband, Layton Gray Evans, Sr., a son, Layton Gray Evans Jr., and her sister, Ethel White. She was a charter member of Elm Grove Baptist Church, a retired farmer and homemaker. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, May 31, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. at Elm Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Paul LaPrevotte and the Rev. Preston Jernigan. Burial followed in Highland Memorial Gardens, Ahoskie. She is survived by her daughters Dale Mulder of Colerain and Bonnie Evans of Washington, NC, her sons, Bernard Evans and Donnie Ray Evans, both of Colerain, and Roger Lee Evans of Ahoskie, nine grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren. Roane Wilson, age 74, died at Autumn Care Nursing Home in Rich Square on Sunday, May 29, 2005. She is a native of Bertie County and a member of the Kelford Baptist Church. She was married to the late J.V. Roane, Jr. in 1957 and they made their home in Kelford, NC. Following the death of Mr. Roane she was later married to the late Charles E. Wilson of Williamsburg, VA. Survivors include three daughters, Rosemary Hester of Glouster, VA, Cindy Albertson of Wicomico, VA, and Cannie Hull of Glouster, VA, one son, Keith Roane of Rocky Mount, NC and one sister, Julia Cahoon of Kelford, NC. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and three step-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday at the Kelford Baptist Church in Kelford, NC with the burial following at the Roxobel Kelford Cemetery in Roxobel, NC. Officiating will be the Rev. Doug Spivey. Sykes Funeral Services of Rich Square, NC is handling arrangements.. VIVIAN WHITE Vivian W. White, 82, died Monday, May 30, 2005 at the Brian Center. Mrs White was born in Bertie County on June 25, 1923 to the late Daniel and Myrtle Phelps White and was predeceased by her husband, Cecil White. She was a dedicated member of Askewville Assembly of God Church for more than 50 years. As a member of that congregation, she served her Lord faithfully and continued to attend services until her health would no longer allow it. She was dedicated in her service to God and continued to attend services at the Brian Center where she was called a blessing by both preacher and congregation. For her entire adult life, she was a loving mother, grandmother and great- grandmother who helped raise nearly every one of her grandchildren. She continued to prepare huge Christmas meals for her entire family into her 70's because she loved to cook and be with her family. A retired grocery clerk, White was a hard worker her entire adult life, working on a farm and in the home before working many years at Lea Lumber Company in Windsor and at White's Grocery in Askewville. Funeral services were held Thursday, June 2, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. at Askewville Assembly of God Church by the Rev. R. O. Denton Jr and the Rev. R.O. Denton Sr. Burial will follow in the Edgewood Cemetery. Survivors include her daughter, Myrna Auttman of Bracey, VA, her sons, Norman "Hinkey" White and Thad White, both of Windsor, her sister Revie Allen of Chesapeake, VA, nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 1, 2005 at Walker Funeral Home, Windsor and at other times from Mrs. White's home. Burial will follow in Edgewood Cemetery. VENNIE CASPER WHITE Vennie Casper White, 92, a resident of Riversedge Nursing Home, died Tuesday, May 31, 2005. Mrs. White was born on June 11. 1912 to the late Joseph John and Milbra Dunning Early Casper and was predeceased by her husband, William Henry White, and a son Lacy Merle White. She was a member of Pritchard Road Baptist Church and a homemaker. Funeral services were held Friday, June 3, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. at the Walker Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Dave Thompson. Burial followed in Edgewood Cemetery. She is survived by her daughters Alice Bridges and Nancy Roberson, both of Windsor, her son William White of Wilmington, twelve grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.
