Mills, 76, of the 1500 block of Morgan Drive, died May 2, 2006, in Sentara Care Plex Hospital. A native of Roxobel, NC, she was the widow of Irvin Mills and a member and former usher of St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church, Portsmouth. Survivors include six daughters, Thelma Hardy and Patricia Mills, both of Portsmouth, Judy L. Mills of Hampton, Shirley T. Wilson (Kevin) of Delaware, Sherry J. O’Neal (Steven) of Chesapeake and Alfreda A. Lee (Marty) of Richmond, Va.; three sons, Eddie Bishop and Kenneth Smith, both of Norfolk and Lonnie Smith of Hampton; three sisters, Cherry Johnson of Washington, D.C., Bertha Bishop of Takoma Park, Md., and Margaret Whims of Silver Spring, Md.; 17 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends. A funeral will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. in St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church, Portsmouth, by Dr. Curtis E. Edmonds. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Chesapeake. COOPER WINDSOR - Ruby Mourning Cooper, 80, of the 900 block of Cooper Hill Road, died May 3, 2006. She was the daughter of the late Garfield and Gertrude Wilson Mourning and was born on June 15, 1925, in Bertie County, NC. During her early years she joined the Cooper Hill COGIC---now Refreshing Center COGIC. In 1942, she married John Cooper. To this union, eight children were born. She passed from this life on Wednesday, May 3, 2006 at Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville. She leaves to cherish her memory, her husband John Cooper, four daughters, Connie Smallwood of East Windsor, NJ, Alice Sutton of Raleigh, Melissa Cooper of Windsor, and Kimberly Cooper of Robersonville, three sons, Linwood Cooper of Upper Marlboro, Md., Horace Cooper of North Charleston, SC and Wallace Cooper of Savannah, Ga., two foster daughters, Juanita Montgomery of Durham and Bonita Perkins of Greenville, twenty-four grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; five sisters, Virginia Cherry of Litchfield, CT., Alice Griggs of Baltimore, Md., Bertha Parker and Minnie Cooper, both of Windsor, and Edith Scott of Williamston and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. LEGGETT WINDSOR - Garland Ray Leggett, 79, a native of Bertie County, died May 4, 2006 at his home. He was the widower of Jessie Mae Sanderlin Leggett. Mr. Leggett was born in Bertie County on July 2, 1926 to the late Lewis T. and Lony Ann Williford Leggett and was predeceased by his wife. A graveside service was conducted Monday at Edgewood Cemetery by the Rev. Michael Bailey. Walker Funeral Home, Windsor, was in charge. Leggett retired from Stubbs Veneer and Lea Lumber Company. He is survived by a brother, Robert Rudolph Leggertt of Aulander and several nieces and nephews. HORACE R. JEFFERSON COLERAIN - Horace Rudolph. Jefferson, 68, of Colerain, died May 6, 2006 in Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville. He was the son of the late Harry and Nettie Jefferson --- the fifth of nine children. He was born on September 7, 1937 in Bertie County. He was a farmer until his health failed. He joined Mt. Ararat Baptist Church at an early age. He leaves to mourn his wife Annie Watson Jefferson of Colerain, his children Horace Jefferson Jr. and Patrick Jefferson, both of the home, Sherman Jefferson of Portsmouth, Va., Donald Jefferson of Ahoskie, Anthony Jefferson of Middletown, Ct, Cheryl Jefferson-Winborne of Windsor, sister, Celia Cherry of Windsor, brothers Thomas Jefferson and Linwood Jefferson, both of Ossining, NY, and Donald Jefferson of Windsor, ten grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. A sister, Clara Cherry, three brothers, William and Archie Bazemore and George Jefferson, preceded him in death. GARRETT COLERAIN - Roger L. Garrett, 77, a native of Bertie County, died May 8, 2006 at his residence. Garrett was a member of Elm Grove Missionary Baptist Church. He was retired from Georgia Pacific, Ahoskie. Survivors include his wife, Catherine Moore Garrett of Colerain; three sons, Johnny Garrett of Ft. Belvoir, Va., Curtis Garrett of Raleigh and Cordell Garrett of Louisville, KY; three daughters, Brenda Garrett of Richmond, Va., Sophia Weaver of Colerain and Linda Moore of Aulander; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and three step- grandchildren. She was born in Bertie County on September 2, 1936 to the late Livingston J. and Lina Copeland White. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, May 12, 2006 at Askewville Baptist Church by the Rev. Freddie Harris. Burial will be in Edgewood Cemetery. Mrs. Jernigan retired from Askewville Elementary School as a Child Nutritionist. White of Edenton; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. VERNA B. FRANCIS WINDSOR - Verna B. Francis of Windsor, NC died Thursday, May 11, 2006 in Bertie Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Francis was the wife of Robert Gene Francis and the daughter of the late Elizabeth Wilson and Willie D. Billingsley. Mrs. Francis is survived by her two daughters Teri Williford of Edenton and Trasa White of Windsor, her three sisters, Jean Peay and Dot VanEick, both of Melbourne, Fla., and Bill Kent of Sparta, TN, her two brothers, Aubrey Billingsley of Orlando, Fla., and Willie Billingsley of Windsor, her nine grandchildren, Bobi Bobbitt, Dustin White, Lee Williford, Lynse Williford, Nate Harper, Gabe White, Luke Williford, Zack White and Bobby Kerns, and her two great-grandchildren, Jaden Bobbitt and Jack Bobbitt. Besides her parents, Mrs. Francis was also predeceased by her daughter, Kathryn E. Francis, her son Robert Francis, Jr. and her sister, Tizzy Noles. Mrs. Francis was a member of Cashie Baptist Church in Windsor. Her favorite activity was attending her grandchildren’s sporting events. A celebration of Mrs. Francis life will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, May 17, 2006 at Cashie Baptist Church with the Rev. John McGinnis officiating. Burial will follow in Edgewood Cemetery. MAGALINE MITCHELL PORTSMOUTH VA. - Magaline Mitchell, 79, a native of Aulander, died May 12, 2006, in Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center. She was the widow of George Mitchell. Mrs. Mitchell was a member of New Mount Olive Baptist Church, Portsmouth. Survivors include two sisters, Eunice Watson of Ahoskie and Myrth Ruth Evans of Oakland Park, Fla.; and a brother, Fred Allen Mitchell of Baltimore. POWELLSVILLE - Joseph Cling (J.C.) Holloman, Sr., 90, of the 400 block of Bethlehem Church Road, died May 12, 2006, at Albermarle Hospital in Elizabeth City, NC. Mr. Holloman was born September 20, 1915 in Powellsville, NC, the son of the late Cling and Essie Connor Holloman, and was a graduate of Powellsville High School, attended Wake Forest University, and Campbell College. Mr. Holloman grew up on his parents family farm n Powellsville, and after completing his education he worked with Swift and Company in Norfolk, Va. After World War II, he returned home and married Lillian Earl Mizelle and they opened the Office Supply Store in Ahoskie, NC. They later sold the business and J.C. began selling insurance for Mutual/United of Omaha Insurance Companies from which he retired. J.C. served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and fought in the Battle of the Bulge, where he received Infantryman badge Ex 30 Caliber Rifle. He also served in Ardennes Rhineland; Central Europe, and received the American Theater Service Medal; EAME Service Medal with 3 Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal; Distinguished Unit Medal; and World War II Victory Medal. Upon retirement he returned to the family farm and enjoyed working, hunting, fishing, and spending time with his family. Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Lillian Earl Holloman, one daughter, Julie Holloman Terry and husband Garry; one sister, Faye Hoggard of Chesapeake, Va. Besides his parents Mr. Holloman was predeceased by a son, Joseph Cling (JJqayay) Holloman Jr., a daughter, Vicky Holloman, one sister, Elma Pierce, and a brother, Bruce Holloman. WILLIAMS NORFOLK - Janett F. Williams, the widow of Bishop D. Lawrence Williams, went home to be with the Lord May 14, 2006. "Janie" was born July 21, 1911, in Bertie County, North Carolina, to Godwin and Rosa Smith Flood in a family of nine sons and two daughters. After graduating from Elizabeth City State, she moved to Norfolk where she worked at the Naval Supply Center. In 1951, she married the then Overseer D. Lawrence Williams, the pastor of The Mother Church of God In Christ (Mason Memorial Church). She immediately became the mother of 14 children. For 20 years, she was his co- laborer in the ministry. As a pastor’s wife, she influenced many lives for the Kingdom of God. She leaves a glorious spiritual legacy to her sister, Mildred; her sons, Robert, William Dove, David and Joseph; daughters, Lenora, Jessie, Helen, Gloria and Ruth; a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren; the Church of God In Christ; and the citizens of the kingdom of heaven. A wake will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday and a homegoing celebration will be at 11 a.m. Saturday. Both services will be held in Mason Memorial Church, 744 Goff St., Norfolk. He was the widower of Pola Reed Penwell. Mr. Penwell was born in Bertie County and was the son of the late Henry and Lena Peede Penwell. He was also preceded in death by sisters Elizabeth Early and Susie Faulkner. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home, Edenton, by the Rev. Greg Brinson. LILA B. PARKER MURFREESBORO - Mrs. Lila Brown Parker, age 75, of Benthall Bridge Road, Murfreesboro, died May 15, 2006 at Bertie Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Parker was born December 9, 1930 in Bertie County, NC, the daughter of the late Talbert and Susan Brown. She was also preceded in death by a son, Lloyd Wayne Parker. She was a member of Mount Tabor Baptist Church and a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. Survivors include her husband, Lloyd Alton Parker, her children, Wanda Elaine Parker Vinson and her husband W.C. of Murfreesboro, Timothy "Timmy" James Parker and his wife Lynn of Franklin, Va., Nicholas Dane Parker of Murfreesboro and Marlene Loraine Parker and her husband Tim Askew of Ashboro, NC. Born in Windsor, NC, he was retired from the ground keeping department at NORSHIPCO. He was a member of St. Paul COGIC and its Deacon Board, Male Chorus and Sunday School. Jones, Jr., son, Jimmy Gray Jones, daughter, Louise Harris, daughter, Peggy Jones, and her parents, Henry W. and Francis Baker Byrum. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother and a Baptist. She is survived by daughters, Dorothy Whitley and husband, Luther of Harrellsville and Bobbie Byrum of Woodland; sons, Wilma Jones and wife, Alice of Murfreesboro, Melvin Jones of Woodland, Dale Jones and wife, Connie of Conway, Robert Jones and wife, Diann of Merry Hill, Henry Kirkland Jones of Merry Hill, Thomas Jones and wife, Olivia of Merry Hill; 37 grandchildren; 61 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great- grandchildren. He was a native of Bertie County, a son of the late William H. and Emma H. Hill, a member of First Presbyterian Church, Ahoskie, an Army veteran of World War II, a retired roofer and was predeceased by his wife, Lucille Godwin Hill. Surviving is one daughter, Beck H. Hall and husband G.C. of Aulander; one sister, Elizabeth Robbins of Ahoskie; one brother, Arba Hill of Suffolk; one grandson, Gregory C. LEDELL DAVIS AHOSKIE - Ledell Davis, 79, a native of Bertie County, died May 18, 2006 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville. He was born on June 10, 1926 in Bertie County. Survivors include his wife, Naomi Speller Davis of Ahoskie; daughters, Maxine Davis of Murfreesboro, Cynthia Davis Martin of Snow Hill and Monique Soloman of Philadelphia, Pa.; brothers, Randolph Davis of Windsor and Walter Davis of Philadelphia; sisters, Velma Davis and Louise Privott, both of Philadelphia and Vasit White of York, Va; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. LESTER M. WARD WINDSOR - Lester Murray Ward, 66, of the 400 block of S. King St., died May 22, 2006 of cancer. He was born April 23, 1940 in Windsor, the son of Lester Ellsworth Ward and Elizabeth Murray Ward of Newport News. His fraternal grandparents were Nathan Q. and Cora Ward of Aulander, NC. He was raised in childhood by his maternal grandparents, Edward N. and Ella Selby Murray of Fairfield, N.C. At age 11, he was reunited with his mother and stepfather, Richard Cooper and moved to Windsor. Murray is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Katherine Sawyer Ward and two daughters, Mary Charles Ward Pawlikowski and husband Rick of Rocky Mount and Elizabeth Ward Holloman of Windsor; three grandchildren, Katie and Hunter Pawlikowski and Lofton Holloman; and a brother, Jerry E. Ward and wife Judy of Poquoson; and a brother-in-law, Dr. Charles J. Sawyer III and wife Lois of Ahoskie. He is also survived by a nephew, Jay E. Ward Jr. and wife Mary and their children, Trey III and Amber; a nephew, Jud Sawyer IV of Wilmington, NC; and a niece, Kathy Sawyer Mann, also of Wilmington and her children, Austin, Charlie and Mary Ashburn. After attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Murray served in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve for eight years. He was employed by Cooper Insurance Agency in 1961, becoming a partner and later a president of the corporation until his death. He was also owner of his own business, East Coast Finance Co. He was active all his life with the St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Windsor serving in early life with the Young Peoples Service League, Young Churchmen and choir. In later years, he served as a Sunday School teacher, twice elected as senior warden to the Vestry and as treasurer of the church for 30 years. He also served on the board of Roanoke-Chowan Community College and was a board member of Southern Bank and Trust Co., Windsor. A funeral and interment will be held at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Windsor, at 11 a.m. Thursday with a luncheon following at home after the service. CHERRY KELFORD - Celia Mae Bond Cherry, 68, of Harrell Siding Road, died May 22, 2006. A funeral will be Sunday at 3 p.m. in Conoconary Baptist Church, Aulander. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge. DAVID JOLAINE HOLLEY David Jolaine Holley (D.J) was known as "The Peacemaker" of his family. He was a man with a quiet, gentle, sweet humble spirit. He was also well mannered, shy and caring, but always of very few words. D.J. was born to David and Joyce on November 21, 1982. He attended school in Bertie County until he moved to Newport News, Va., to live with his father and stepmother and continue his education. He was employed at the Walmart Distribution Warehouse. He made Christ the Lord and Savior of his life just months ago, and now he has gone home to be with his Savior. SANFORD CHESAPEAKE - George Melvin Sanford, 64, of the 900 block of Brookmont Lane, passed away May 26, 2006 in Chesapeake. A native of Windsor, NC he was the son of George Edward and Ruby Spruill Sanford. He was the president and owner of Conforma Contact Lenses and attended Colonial Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Geraldine C. Sanford; two daughters, Teri Lynn Mackley and her husband Tommy and Becky Lynn Duenke and her husband Jeff, all of Chesapeake; two sons, Steve Sanford and his wife Kimberly of Atlanta and Kevin D. Sanford and his wife Julie of Virginia Beach; a sister, Joan Brandon and her husband David of Florence, S.C.; a brother, Terry Sanford and his wife Sharon of Virginia Beach; 12 grandchildren; a niece; and five nephews. BARBARA C. KING NORFOLK - Barbara Allen Cullifer King, 71, died at her home in Norfolk on Saturday, May 27, 2006. Mrs. King was a native of Bertie County. She moved to Norfolk at a very young age where she and her family made their home. Later in life she moved back to Roxobel for a period of about 10 years. She became very active in the Sandy Run Baptist Church, becoming a member of the church, the Sunday School and the choir. She also was an EMT in the community. Mrs. King lived her life for her family. Preceding her in death were her mother and father, Olive Sarah Allen and Robert G. Cullifer Sr.; her daughter, Susan M. King and her son, Donald R. King Jr. Survivors include her husband, Donald R. King Sr. of the home; two sons, Michael E. King of Norfolk and Mitchell A.R. King and his wife Rhonda of Suffolk; one sister, Janet C. Boschen and her husband the Rev. Henry Boschen of Roxobel, NC; and one brother, Robert Glenn Cullifer and his wife Margaret of Surf City, NC Also surviving are four grandchildren, Jerome D. King, Jason D. King, Justin M. King, and Jesse B. King, as well as one great-grandchild. BURNETT WILLIAMS MERRY HILL - Burnett Williams, 93, died May 28, 2006. He was born on April 5, 1913 in Merry Hill, his home for most of his life. He was the son of Richard and Pauline Williams who raised their children in Peterson where the Williams family owned land since the end of the Civil War. Burnett was a lifelong member of Peterson Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, originally built by his grandfather and former slaves. He served on the Board of Trustees for many years, on the Deacon Board, and as a member of Masonic Lodge #275. He was the devoted husband for over fifty years of the late Rosetta Williams and an exceptional father to their children. He died peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, May 28 at Winchester House in Libertyville, IL, surrounded by loving family. He was preceded in death by his son Burnett Jr. of Bowie, Md. He is survived by four daughters, Ella Cherry of Waukegan, II, Dr. Dandra Rodriguez of Teaneck, NJ, Dr. Brenda Sentor of Zion, IL, and Sue Pitts of Fort Washington, Md., six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, two brothers, Samuel Williams and John Williams, both of Merry Hill, two sisters, Magora Taylor of Washington, D.C. and Theresa NcNeil of Mt Vernon, NY, many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. ALICE WATFORD COLERAIN - Alice Faye Watford, formally of Colerain, died May 28, 2006. "SHORTY" BAKER AULANDER - Carrington Earl "Shorty" Baker, 77, of the 600 block of Carroll Street, died suddenly on Monday, May 29, 2006, at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville, NC. At the time of his death, he was surrounded by all members of his immediate family. Mr. Baker, was the son of the late Maylon and Gladys Baker. He graduated from Ahoskie High School and Wake Forest University and served in the U.S. Marine Corps for two years. "Shorty" was a farmer and local businessman in Aulander for many years. He was a former member of Connaritsa Baptist Church where he served in many roles and was presently a member of Aulander Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and church clerk. Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Jane Jernigan Baker; daughters, Peggy Clayton and husband Carl of Ahoskie, Holley Drew and husband David of Aulander; a son, Garry Baker and wife, Amy of Aulander; and grandchildren, Chad Cayton, Garrett Baker, Dustin Baker, Kristen Cayton, Bryan Drew and Brittany Drew. Besides his parents, Mr. Baker was preceded in death by a brother, Maylon S. MERRY HILL - William Henry Taylor Jr., 85, died May 30, 2006 at his home. He was the widower of Amelia Cale Lawrence Taylor and Edna Leggett Taylor. PHILLIP SANDERLIN VIRGINIA BEACH - Phillip Sanderlin, 84, of the 3700 block of Sentara Way, passed away May 31, 2006, at Sentara Nursing Center. Phillip was born Feb 9, 1922, in Windsor, N.C., to the late Martin and Percy Sanderlin. He was a graduate of W.S. Etheridge High School, Windsor. He was a member of Mount Gilead Pentecostal Holiness Church where he served as a deacon. Phillip retired after 20 years of service as a landscaper. He leaves to cherish his memory two nephews, John Skinner Jr. and Linwood Skinner (Claudia); five nieces, Barbara James, Jacqueline Collins (Milton), Katie James, Melanie James and Chery\l Elliott; and a host of other relatives and friends. She was born on April 22, 1945 in Bertie County. She was a 1964 graduate of R. L. Vann High School and a Pastor’s Aid at Elm Grove Baptist Church.
