OVERTON WINDSOR - Gladys Butler Overton, 76, a native of Bertie County, died October 31, 2003, at her home. A funeral was conducted Monday at Walker Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Edgewood Cemetery. Mrs. Overton was a homemaker and member of Siloam Baptist Church. Survivors include a daughter, Betty Dunlow of Windsor, three sons, Melvin Overton and James Overton, both of Windsor and Richard Overton of Macclesfield; two sisters, Helen Todd of Windsor and Jean Copeland of Williamston; eight grandchildren; and 10 great- grandchildren. RUTH C. JOHNSON COLERAIN - Ruth Cherry Johnson, 92, a native of Bertie County, died November 1, 2003, at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Hertford County Undertakers Chapel, Winton, by the Rev. Shirley Johnson. Burial will be in the Sessoms family cemetery, Colerain. She is survived by one sister, Lula Sessoms of Colerain. AARON OUTLAW MERRY HILL - Aaron "Eric" Outlaw, 34, of the 100 block of Old Merry Hill Road, died November 1, 2003. LAWRENCE PORTSMOUTH - Gracie Cherry Lawrence, 77, of the 500 block of Roosevelt Blvd., died Nov. 1, 2003, at Virginia Shores Healthcare Center. She was born in Windsor, N.C., to the late Moses and China Cherry. She was a member of Noble Street Missionary Baptist Church, Portsmouth. She was a member of the Sunday School, Cottage Prayer Band and Davidson Circle Club. She was married to the late Lee M. Lawrence. She leaves to cherish her memory two sisters, Annie Ruth Cowan and Tempie Bazemore, both of Portsmouth; a brother, Hubert Cherry of Aulander, N.C. and a host of nieces, nephews, in-laws, cousins, other relatives and friends. A funeral will be held Friday at noon at Noble Street Missionary Baptist Church. Pastor Henry P. Jones officiating. Burial will be held at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. COLERAIN - Eschew Linton Minton Jr., 86, of the 1000 block of Meadow Road, died Nov. 4, 2003 in Roanoke- Chowan Hospital. Mr Minton was born in Hertford County and was a member of Brantley's Grove Baptist Church. He was a retired farmer and a member of Woodmen of the World. Survivors include his two daughters, Eloise M. Jernigan of Colerain, Carol Ann Davidson of Roanoke Rapids; his son, Frank Sumner Minton of Colerain; a sister Vivian M. Deck of Lake City. Fla; three grandchildren and three great grandchildren. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, with the Rev. Robert May officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today and other times at the home of Eloise M. Jernigan, 522 Cremo Road, Colerain. CATHERINE E. BAZEMORE WINDSOR - Catherine Estell Bazemore of the 1800 block of Windsor Oaks died November 4, 2003. Catherine was born January 7, 1937 in Windsor, NC. She was the daughter of Soloman and Sarah Cooper. She departed this life in her home doing her favorite pastime -watching TV. Catherine was married to Frank Douglas Bazemore. She was a member of St. Paul Baptist Church where she sang in the choir. She attended school in Bertie County and worked for may years at Gilliam Brothers Peanut Factory and Perdue Chicken Farm. She was loving, kind and gentle spirit. Her smile could make you feel like you had known her for years. She never met a stranger. She loved to be the life of the party, making you laugh and feel better. She leaves to cherish her memories: two sons, Larry Bazemore of Virginia Beach, VA and Melvin Bazemore of Portsmouth, VA; two sisters, Celesta Rose Silver of Baltimore, MD and Barbara Ann Cherry of Chesapeake, VA; two brothers, Henry and Edward Brown of Chesapeake, Va; a very special friend, Eula Pugh of Windsor, NC; ten nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. A funeral was held Saturday, November 8, 2003 at 1 p.m. in St. Paul Baptist Church in Windsor. The eulogy was given by Rev. James Wrighton. Interment occurred at Hillcrest Cemetery in Windsor. Gilliam Funeral Home is in charge. JAMES A. PUGH JR. VIRGINIA BEACH - James A. "Fatman" Pugh Jr. of the 200 block of Birdneck Road, died November 6, 2003. He was born March 1, 1943 to Emma Green Pugh and the late James (Foot) Pugh Sr. He attended Bertie County Schools. At an early age he joined Cedar Landig Missionary Baptist Church. At the age of 18 he decided to make his home in Virginia Beach, VA. The funeral was held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Cedar Landing Baptist Church. Gilliam Funeral Home, Windsor, N.C., is in charge. RUTH M. BARNES BOYKINS, VA - Ruth Mitchell Barnes, 81, a native of Windsor, died November 8, 2003. She was the widow of Henry Amos Barnes. Mrs. Barnes attended Chowan College and was a co-owner with her late husband of Oak Lumber Co. Mrs. Barnes was a member of Boykin's Baptist Church where she was an active member of the WMU and active with the youth as a Sunbeam's leader, GA's, RA's and youth Sunday School teacher. She was a member of the Tarrara Woman's Club. Survivors include her daughter, Martha B. Felts of Boykins; a son, Charles S. Barnes of Courtland; two brothers, Pat Mitchell and George Mitchell, both of Windsor, NC; four grandchildren; and four great grandchildren. A graveside service was conducted Sunday in Beechwood Cemetery with the Rev. Raymond Bunn. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Boykins Baptist Church, P.O. Gilliam Funeral Home, Windsor, is in charge. BLANCHE B. PERRY COLERAIN - Blanche Harrell Bass Perry, 83, passed away after a brief illness Nov. 14, 2003, at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh. Born in rural Bertie County on Aug. 6, 1920, she grew up on a tobacco farm in Powellsville, the oldest of four children. She trained as a registered nurse at Gallagher Hospital in Washington, DC, during World War II, then returned to Bertie County, married and moved to Colerain. An active member of that small community and Colerain Baptist Church, she worked as a nurse and as a bookkeeper and was always available to friends and neighbors needing medical care. Blanche loved to play bridge, to travel and in later years, to try her luck at the slots in Las Vegas and Atlantic City. Mrs. Perry is survived by her husband, Murray G. Perry of Colerain; a daughter, Sharon Perry and husband Robert Cooper and their daughter, Perry of Raleigh; a son, Scott Perry and wife Margaret and their son, Matthew of Raleigh; and a sister, Frances Bass of Britthaven in Washington, NC. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in Highland Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Shelby Stephens officiating. The family will receive friends at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Monday prior to services. HATTIE PARKER WINDSOR - Hattie Sanderlin Parker, 76, died November 14, 2003 at Brian Center, Windsor. She was born to the late Frank Sanderlin and the late Mary Lizza Spruill Sanderlin on October 22, 1947 in Windsor, NC. She joined Sandy Point Missionary Baptist Church at an early age and remained faithful member until her death. She loved with all that she had. She leaves to cherish her memory three sons, George of Raleigh, NC, Raymond of Tillery, NC, and Dennis of Newport News, VA, two daughters, Florita (Willie) and Terri (Albert), both of Windsor, one sister, Ada of Philadelphia, two brothers, David (Vivian) and Philmore (Rosa), one aunt, Lena Smith of Alliance, NC, six grandchildren, Dianna, Cheryl, Jeremiah, KaTria, Hattie, and Lonnie, two sisters-in-law, Rosa and Meta, one daughter-in-law, Charlotte, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins, as well as a host of friends. LOUISE EDWARDS FARMER AULANDER - Louise Edwards Farmer, 88, of Aulander, NC, died Nov 15, 2003, at Guardian Care in Ahoskie, NC. Mrs Farmer was born Aug. 24, 1915 in Edgecombe County NC the daughter of the late Marson and Anna Edwards. Her husband, Clinton Hill Farmer, also preceded her in death. She was a homemaker. Survivors include her children, Lou Cooke Bridgers of Conway, NC, Linda Farmer Lassiter of Asheville, NC, Clinton Hill "C.H." Farmer, Jr. of Aulander, NC and David Lane Farmer of Windsor, NC, a sister, Mildred Turner of Pinetops, NC, thirteen grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren. Mrs. Nowell was a member of Aulander Baptist Church and Order of the Eastern Star Chapter No. 291 and a graduate of East Carolina University and was retired as a home economics teacher for Bertie County Public Schools. Survivors include her husband, John Albert Nowell and two brothers, Robert Evans of Edenton, NC, and Roy Evans of Suffolk. MARY H. CALE COLERAIN - Mary Louise Harrell Cale, 91, a native of Chowan County, died November 17, 2003 at Three Rivers Nursing Home. She was the widow of Johnnie Hartwell Cale. A graveside funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hillcrest Cemetery, Colerain, by the Rev. Dennis Conner. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Walker Funeral Home, Windsor and at other times from the home of Jo Vann Meyers, 148 Ashland Church Road. JULIUS "JUBOY" CHERRY This is to certify that Julius cherry departed this life on Monday, November 17, 2003. He was born December 14, 1960 to Luzetter Cherry and the late Cornelius Cherry Sr. in Lewiston, NC. He attended the public schools of Bertie County. Julius attended St. Luke Healing Temple of Lewiston, North Carolina. He worked at Perdue and the Shipyard before encountering back injuries that led to early retirement. He was united in Holy Matrimony to Sylvia Murphy on May 15, 1982. To this union two daughters were born, Fontasia and Sha'kya Cherry. Two brothers preceded him in death, Joe A. Cherry and Jesse J. Cherry. He leaves to cherish his memories a loving and devoted wife, Sylvia Cherry; two daughters, one godson, Antwon (Shawn) Hill; one God daughter; Cherry Baxter; mother, Luzetter Murphy of Lewiston, NC; five brothers, Willie C. SIMON SPELLER Simon Speller, the son of the late James Speller and the late Hazel Gorham Speller, departed this life on November 17, 2003. He was born November 30, 1936. He attended school in Windsor and was a native of Windsor. He resided at the Three Rivers Rest Home for a number of years before his passing. He was married to Ethel Lee Pugh Speller on May 12, 1958. Simon was preceded in death by one daughter Janice Speller, one sister, Rosie Ryan and one brother, Leon Speller. COBB MERRY HILL - Viola Castelloe Cobb, 94, of the 1300 block of NC 45 North, died Nov. 18, 2003 at Guardian Care Nursing Home of Ahoskie. She was born in Bertie County Feb. 10, 1909 to the late Willie and Rowena Davis Castelloe. Mrs. Cobb was predeceased by her husband, William Martin Cobb; daughter, Katherine C. White; son, William Martin Cobb, Jr.; brother, Raymond Castelloe; and grandson Martie White. Mrs. Cobb was a member of Riverside Baptist Church and a homemaker. MARGARET WILSONIA WINBORNE WATFORD Margaret Wilsonia Winborne Watford was born November 25, 1934 to Earnhart Winborne and Mary C. Downey Winborne. She departed this earthly home on Thursday, November 20, 2003. She attended the public schools of Bertie County and graduated from W.S. Etheridge High School. She worked as a teacher's aide in the Bertie County School System, Hamilton Beach, and Kiddie World Child Development Center. She also attended the local community college. She was a member of the Cedar Landing Missionary Baptist Church where she sang in the Senior choir, Mass Choir, and was a member of the Missionary Circle. She leaves to cherish her memories her husband of forty-nine years, Eddie N. Watford, two daughters, Diane James of Philadelphia, PA and Margaret Askew of Windsor, NC, two sons, Eddie T. Watford, Sr. and Emerson Ricardo Watford, both of Windsor, NC; her mother Mary C. WELFORD V. ALLEN WINDSOR - Welford Vincent Allen, a native of Bertie County, died November 22, 2003 at Atlantic City Medical Center, Ponoma. Survivors include five adopted children, Diane Robertson, Stephanie Robertson, Esther Robertson, Ethel Robertson and Clarence Robertson; and six sisters, Rosa Mae Nelson, and Doretha Overton, both of Alexandria, VA, Louise Garrett of Hampton, Addie Powell of Nyack, Alice Wilson and Lillian Gray, both of Windsor. JAMES LEROY WATSON On Saturday, November 22, 2003, God dispatched an angel to escort James Leroy Watson, a loving son, father, and brother home. Leroy was born to the late Julius (Pie) Watson and Lola Watson on February 8, 1951 in Bertie County, North Carolina. He attended Bertie County Schools. In 1969 Leroy was joined in Holy Matrimony to Barbara Spivey. This union was blessed with two daughters. He resided in the Bronx, New York for over 30 years, and was employed with Deer Park Spring Water Company for over 20 years. Leroy loved his job, his cars, sports and most of all he loved people. He was a friend to many as he showed himself friendly. He also loved his family dearly/ His absence will be felt by all that knew him. MIZELLE WINDSOR - Dathel Dunlow Mizelle, 82, of the 100 block of Askewville Road, died Nov 28, 2003, at the Brian Center in Windsor. She was born in Bertie County on July 20, 1921 to the late Robert Lee and Seattle Leary Dunlow and was predeceased by her husband, Alex Mizelle. Mrs. Mizelle was a member of Askewville Baptist Church and a homemaker. Survivors include sisters, Mae D. Wallace of Plymouth, N.C., Vivian D. Baker and Betty D. Castello, both of Windsor and Lina D. Jernigan of Colerain, N.C.; and a brother, Jake Dunlow of Windsor. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Walker Funeral Home, Windsor. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Mizelle Family Cemetery, Askerville Road, by the Rev. R.O.Denton, Jr. ALICE NICHOLS MERRY HILL - Alice Nichols, 86, died Nov. 28, 2003. A funeral was held Dec. 1, 2003 at Peterson Chapel Baptist Church, Merry Hill. Gilliam Funeral Home is in charge. WILLIAM R. WARD WINDSOR - William Randolph Ward, 62, a native of Bertie County, died Nov. 30, 2003 in his home. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in United Outreach Ministry by the Rev. J.R. Thomas. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Walker Funeral Home, Windsor. Was was a retired mechanic, a member of the R&B Cook Club. He was also a member of United Outreach Ministry. Survivors include a son, Horace V. Ward of Potecasi; a daughter, Denise W. Mizelle of Ahoskie; two sisters, Barbara Reed of Whitakers and Ellen Bell of Ahoskie; and three brothers, Cola Ward of Windsor, Richard Ward of Hassle and Eugene Ward of Elizabeth City.
