PATRICIA LIVERMAN-GRIMES WINDSOR - Patricia Faye Liverman-Grimes, 43, died Nov 2, 2004 at the Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation. A graveside service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the Highland Memorial Gardens, Ahoskie, with the Rev. Tommy Hays officiating. Patricia was a member of Union Baptist Church in Ahoskie. She had worked at Bertie Memorial Hospital as a radiologist. She was preceded in death by her father, C.J. Liverman. She is survived by her husband, George F. Grimes of Robersonville; daughter, Caroline Faythe Grimes of Robersonville; stepsons, George Taylor Grimes of Robersonville and David Paul Grimes of Raleigh; her mother, Fay Lewis Liverman of Ahoskie; a sister, Teresa Edwards and husband, Greg of Branchville, VA; and a brother, Douglas Liverman of Ahoskie. A funeral was conducted Friday at Wilroy Baptist Church by the Revs. Carter Dey and Charles W. Thompson. Entombment was in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens Mausoleum with military honors. Evans retired after 25 years as manager of Knight Finance Company. He was a member of Wilroy Baptist Church. He was a lifetime deacon and part chairman of the deacon board, teacher and member of the Faith Walkers Sunday School class and served on many boards. He was also a U.S. Navy veteran after serving in WWII. Survivors include his wife, Cenith Hobbs Evans, sons; Larry Evans and Wayne Evans, both of Suffolk; a daughter, Brenda E. Garrett of Suffolk; a brother, Joe P. Evans of Pulaski; eight grandchildren; and five great- grandchildren. SUSIE P. FAULKNER CHESTER SC - Susie Mae Penwell Faulkner, 79, a native of Aulander, died November 2, 2004. She was the widow of Ellis Faulkner Sr. Survivors include her children, Ellis Jr., Mike, Audrey, and Donna, all of South Carolina; and brothers, Mack Penwell, formerly of Aulander and now of Pinehurst and James Robert Penwell of Edenton. DICEY GILLIAM WINDSOR - Dicey Gilliam, 81, died November 3, 2004 at Three Rivers Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was the daughter of George E. Wesson and Annie Laura Heckstall, was born January 8 1923, the youngest of nine children. She attended Bertie County public schools and joined Mt. Ararat Baptist Church at an early age. She remained there until her health declined and she was unable to attend. She married James L. Bazemore in 1943. To this union were born two sons, James L. Bazemore, Jr., who preceded her in death, and Benjamin Bazemore. She leaves to cherish her memories, one son, Benjamin Bazemore, eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, six nieces, three nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Gilliam Funeral Home Chapel, Windsor. Burial will follow in the Mt. Ararat Church Cemetery. Survivors include one son, Benjamin Bazemore; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. DOROTHY M. BAKER SUNBURY - Dorothy Matthews Baker, 70, a native of Bertie County, died November 3, 2004, in Louise Obici Memorial Hospital, Suffolk. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in Beulah Baptist Church by the Rev. Ron Parr and the Rev. Walter G. Johnston III. Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens, Suffolk. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, is in charge. GEORGE A. CHERRY AHOSKIE - George A. Cherry, a native of Bertie County, died November 3, 2004 at his residence. DEVIN S. LEARY HEXLENA - Devin Shamar Leary, 54 days, infant son of Kevin and Angela Leary, died November 9, 2004. A funeral will be Saturday at 10 a.m. in True Way Holiness Church. FLORENCE R. BUNCH MERRY HILL - Florence Rebecca Bunch, 76, a native of Bertie County, died November 12, 2004 at the Brian Center. She was the widow of Edward Benjamin Bunch. SPELLER WINDSOR - Virtle Hoggard Speller, 93, a native of Bertie County, died Nov 12, 2004. She was the widow of Willie Edison Speller. OUTLAW COLERAIN - Markevion Damon Outlaw, 2 months old, the son of Markee Outlaw and Kimberly Dembry of the 1200 block of NC 42, Colerain, died November 12, 2004. VIRGINIA C. HARRISON CHESAPEAKE - Virginia Christine Harrison went to be with the Lord November 13, 2004. She was surrounded by her family when the angels took her away. She was born July 17, 1925, in Windsor, NC, to James Vernon Byrum and Harriett Ollivia Byrum. Devoted wife of Ernest Hill Harrison for 55 years, she was predeceased by her parents and first-born son, James Ernest Harrison. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her three sons, Ernie Howard and wife Cindy, Danny Wayne and Davy Hill and wife Cynthia of Chesapeake; six grandchildren, Jennifer, Jeffery, Julie, Steve, James and David Harrison; three sisters, Allene Sawyer, Alice and Mary Jones; and a brother, William Byrum, all of North Carolina; and a much loved friend and sister-in-law, Lilly Mae Harrison. She was a devoted follower of Christ and a member of Living Water Church of God for 44 years. She was a longtime Sunday School and Children's Church Teacher, giving much of her time teaching other that love of Christ. She had many friends and a great and very much loved church family. Her memorial service was conducted by her longtime friend, brother in Christ and her pastor, the Rev. Jack D. Sawyer. Her internment was at Chesapeake Memorial Gardens on Cedar Road. Words cant describe how much we'll miss you. We love you. MARY J. SPELLER WINDSOR - Mary J. Speller, 92, (May Jane) was one of ten siblings born to the late Will and Elizabeth Bond on May 11, 1912 in Windsor, NC. She was reared on a farm in the Cedar Landing Community. She attended school in Bertie County. In 1933, at the age of 21, she married her sweetheart, the late John Calwell Cooper. To this union, eight children were born- two of whom preceded her in death (Lewis "T-Baby" Cooper and a baby girl who died at birth). At a young age she was baptized and joined Cedar Landing Baptist Church in Windsor, where she remained a member and attended regularly until her health no longer permitted. May Jan was called from labor to reward on Monday morning, November 15, 2004. She leaves to cherish her memory four daughters, Maggie Smallwood and Bertha Outlaw, both of Windsor, Barbara Carroll of Bronx, NY, and Armaza Johnson of Brooklyn, NY, two sons, Earnest Cooper of Staten Island, NY and Elisha Cooper of St. Albany, NY, one sister, Mamie Speller of Elizabeth City, NC, one sister-in-law, Serena Gray of Brooklyn, eighteen grandchildren (Four preceded her in death), twenty-one great-grandchildren, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Funeral services were held at Cedar Landing Missionary Baptist Church in Windsor on Sunday, November 21 at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Shelton Barnes officiating. Gilliam Funeral Home of Windsor was in charge of the arrangements. DAVID E. GILLIAM WINDSOR - David Herbert (Tom) Gilliam, 55, died November 15, 2004. He was born on November 24, 1948 in Bertie County to the late Edward and Viola Gilliam. He attended public school in Bertie County and worked for many years manufacturing timber until his illness. "Tom" as everyone called him, was a loving, kind and giving spirit whom would do anything to help a fellow human being. His smile and presence will truly be missed. He leaves to cherish his memories, five brothers, Thomas Gilliam, George Gilliam, both of Windsor, John Gilliam of Lewiston, Joe and Frank Gilliam of Atlantic City, NJ, two sisters, Lucy White of Windsor and Nellie Little of Ahoskie. Tom also had a special family who loved him dearly. The late Catherine Ford and the children that he took pride in helping to raise, Luvenza Mosley, Jeffery White, Glean White, Wesley Ford, all of Windsor, Clara McNeil and Patrick Ford of Robersonville, four grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. Brown, 76, a native of Aulander, died November 15, 2004, in Maryview Medical Center, Portsmouth. CATHERINE WHITE WINDSOR - Catherine Matthews White, 96, a native of Bertie County, died November 15, 2004, at Bertie Memorial Hospital. She was born in Bertie County on October 27, 1908 to the late Jake O. and Lucy Parker Matthews and was predeceased by her husband Delmar C. White. Mrs. White was a homemaker and a member of Cashie Baptist Church. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Walker Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Dennis Conner. DENNIS JAMES VEAL Graveside service for Dennis James Veal of Philadelphia was held Sunday at the Hendrix Family Cemetery in Windsor, NC. He was born on April 3, 1954 in Bertie County to the late Nancy Ann Veal and Leon Veal. He loved his field of work as a Pharmacetical Technician. He leaves a sister, Diane Greene and a brother Leon Veal; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and host of cousins. Dennis departed this life on November 16, 2004. She is survived by one brother, Herbert "Rock" Ramsey of Philadelphia, PA. KATHERINE SHORES AULANDER - Katherine Lassiter Shores, 79, died November 21, 2004 at her residence. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Millennium Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Revs. Raymond Potter and Lotus Joyner. Burial will be in Job Cemetery. Shores of Aulander; one daughter, Donna Marie Woodford of Warren, OH; one brother, James W. She was a retired site manager for Harrington Manufacturing. She was a member of Evening Light Church of Christ Jesus and Mother of Metropolitian Interdenominational Church of God in Christ. JOHNSON CHESAPEAKE - Will Rogers Johnson, 65, of the 2400 block of Payne Road, passed away Nov 23, 2004, in Chesapeake General Hospital. A native of Windsor, NC, he was the owner and operator of W. Johnson Towing Company. He was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose, Lodge No. 898 and Legion No. 199. He is survived by his wife, Deborah Dozier Johnson; his mother, Ola Johnson Kellough of Grandy, NC; a daughter, Cynthia Johnson Goley and husband Leon of Portsmouth; and four sisters, Esther White of Lafayette, TN, Gwendolyn C. RUSSELL VIRGINIA BEACH - Vernelle Brickell Russell, 90, of the 5400 block of Wesleyan Drive, formerly of the 700 block of Arvin Road, entered into eternal life, Nov 24, 2004. Born in Bertie County, NC, she was the daughter of the late Joseph L. Brickell and Carrie Williford Brickell, was the widow of George E. Russell Sr., and was predeceased by sisters, Clarence B. Davis, Reva B. Doughtie and brothers, Joseph Brickell and Loyden C. Brickell. Mrs.Russell spent most of her adult life in the Hampton Roads area where she retired from Coca Cola Enterprises after many years of service. She was a member of Virginia Beach Free Will Baptist Church as well as various organizations. Mrs. Russell is survived by a niece, Gale B. Harris of Chesapeake; three nephews, Charles W. Brickell of Waldorf, Md., Elmore W. "Bill" Doughtie of Chesapeake and William L. Brickell of Norfolk; great-nieces and - nephews, as well as great-great-nieces and -nephews. The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Great Bridge Chapel of Oman Funeral Home & Crematory, 653 Cedar Road, Chesapeake. The interment will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Norfolk. BERNICE PARKER TAYLOR NORFOLK - Bernice Parker Taylor, 92, passed away Nov 27, 2004. She was a native of Bertie County, NC, and the widow of James B. Taylor. She was a longtime and extremely active member of Miles Memorial United Methodist Church and Ocean View Chapter Order of the Eastern Star, where she held many stations including Worthy Matron. She is survived by her daughter, Shirley Taylor Byrd and husband Robert of Chesapeake; her son, James Robert Taylor and wife Judith of Columbia, SC; four grandchildren, Shelley Byrd White and husband Jeffery, Michael A. Byrd and wife Lori, all of Chesapeake, Susan Taylor Sprawls and husband Lanier, James E. Taylor and wife Britney, all of Columbia; and six great- grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Miles Memorial United Methodist Church by the Rev. James McClung. Burial will be private. The family will received friends at the Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel today from 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Miles Memorial United Methodist Church.
