He entered into eternal rest on Thursday, November 3, 2005. Joseph was a patient at Hampton Veterans Hospital. His hobby was cutting and delivering wood throughout the neighborhood. He was employed by Lea Lumber Company of Windsor for thirty-five years. He was a member of Cedar Landing Missionary Baptist Church of Windsor. He served in the US Army from January 31, 1946 to April 3, 1948. He was married to Gladys Cherry Hill for fifty-eight years. To this union seven children were born. Two children, Norris and Reatha preceded him in death. Left to cherish his memories are his loving wife Gladys Hill of the home; four sons, Joseph Jr. of Fort Washington, MD., Jabez of Upper Marlboro, MD, Anthony of Windsor, and Patrick of Lewiston, one daughter, Jeannette Hill of Newport News, VA, thirteen grandchildren, three brothers, Jim Hill, Alexander Hill, and Ulysses Hill, all of Portsmouth, VA., two sisters, Georgia Pugh of Windsor, and Mary Nelson of Queens, NY, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held on Monday, November 7, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. at Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Shelton R. Barnes officiating. Burial followed in the Bazemore Family Cemetery. Gilliam Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. LILLIAN BRIDGERS SPIVEY WINDSOR - Lillian Bridgers Spivey, 89, a native of Bertie County, was called to be with the Lord on November 4, 2005 at the age of 89 at Three Rivers Health & Rehab. She was born April 24, 1916 to Thomas J. Bridgers and Mary Parker Bridgers, who preceded her in death. Other family members preceding her in death include her brothers, Bertram and Wayland Bridgers, sister, Alma Bridgers, daughter, Cleo Valinda Leary and granddaughter, Nashun Peele. At an early age Lillian accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior and was baptized at Mt. Ararat Baptist Church in Windsor, North Carolina. She attended public schools here in Bertie County. Later she married the late Abraham (Jep) Spivey. The moved to New York where Lillian lived for 66 years. While in New York, Lillian became a member of Mount Lebanon Baptist Church, where she was a faithful member for over 50 years. Left to cherish and treasure her loving memory are four sisters, Margaret Cherry of Norfolk, Va, Mary Todd of Portsmouth, Va, Verneice Bridgers and Earnestine Wesson of Windsor, three granddaughters, five great grandchildren, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at Mt. Ararat Missionary Baptist Church on Thursday, November 10, 2005 at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Robert Horton officiating. REBECCA SCOTT AULANDER - Mrs. Rebecca "Becky" Carolyn Murphy Scott, age 45 of Frances Mill Road, Aulander, NC, died November 7, 2005 at Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville, NC. Becky was born December 5, 1959. She was predeceased by her father, Daniel C. Murphy. Survivors include her husband, Gary Randolph "Randy" Scott; her sons, Gary Randolph Scott Jr. and his wife Bridget of Rich Square, NC and Adam Nicholas Scott of the home and his fiancé Amanda Gurganus; her mother, Carolyn Storey Murphy of Conway, NC; her sisters, Marcia Perry of Elizabeth City, NC and April Clark and Tonya Behrends, both of Conway, NC; also several uncles, aunts and cousins. Funeral services were held Thursday, November 10, 2005 at 11 a.m. at Ebenezer Assembly of God Church with the Rev. Steve Evans officiating. Burial followed at the Storey Family Cemetery near Conway. EDWARD BOND WILLIAMSTON - Edward Lee "Fuzzy" Bond, 46, a native of Bertie County, died November 7, 2005 in a traffic accident. Mr. Bond was born August 11, 1959 in Bertie County to the late Edward G. and Elva Creech Bond. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, November 10, 2005 at the chapel of Walker Funeral Home by the Rev. James Spencer. Burial will be in Edgewood Cemetery, Windsor. Memorial gifts may be given to the American Cancer Society. Bond was a construction worker for Mark M. Steel. Survivors include his wife, Tammy E. Bond of Bayboro; a daughter, Jennifer Lynn Bond of Williamston; four sons, Jonathan Bond of Florence, Jason Bond of Vanceboro, Preston Bond of Washington and Matthew Bond of Alliance; and one sister, Martha Bond Caraway of Oriental. VIOLET H. DAVIDSON COLERAIN - Violet Hoggard Davidson, 86, a native of Bertie County, died November 7, 2005. She was the widow of Johnnie Lee Davidson Sr. Mrs. Davidson was a member of Mars Hill Baptist Church and a homemaker. Survivors include one daughter, Rebecca D. Mann, Murfreesboro; three sons, Johnnie Lee Davidson, Jr. of Portsmouth, VA., L. Edward Davidson of Chester, VA., and Howard C. Davidson, Colerain; two sisters, Mildred Beaman, Suffolk, VA., and Virgie Johns of Virginia Beach, VA.; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, by the Rev. Hines Adams. Burial will be in Highland Memorial Gardens. Walker Funeral Home, Windsor, is in charge. MARY MITCHELL WINDSOR - Mary W. "Mae Minnie" Mitchell, died November 10, 2005 at Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation Center in Windsor, NC. She was born in Bertie County on March 18, 1922 to the late George Winston. She attended Bertie County Schools and was a member of St. Elmo Baptist Church until her health failed. She was married to Otis Mitchell who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her son Johnny Winston and her brother George Winston. She leaves to cherish her memories five sons, A.J. Winston and Otis Mitchell, Jr., both of New York, Marvin Mitchell and Dennis Mitchell, both of Kinston, NC, and James Mitchell of Windsor, two daughters, Rosa Mitchell of Merry Hill and Annette Bond of Bronx, NY, ten grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, two sisters, Georgia Walker of Norfolk, VA and Rossetta Bonner of Windsor and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. MARTHA MARSH COLUMBIA - Funeral services for Martha Hollowell Marsh, 78, was held Monday at 11 a.m. at Eastminster Presbyterian Church. Burial will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Aulander Cemetery in Aulander, NC. The family received friends on Sunday from 6-8 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. Born in Aulander, NC, she was the daughter of the late Roy A. and Blanche Hinshaw Hollowell. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Colonial Dames of the 17th Century, the United Daughters of the Confederacy, the Forest Lake Club, and the Four Seasons and Dogwood Garden Clubs. Mrs. Marsh was a member of Eastminster Presbyterian Church. Surviving are her husband, William J. Marsh; sons, William H. Marsh, M.D. and his wife Pamela of Mt. Pleasant and Stephen S. Marsh, M.D. and his wife Karen of Zebulon, N.C.; and grandchildren, Courtney, Hannah, Roy, Samuel and Nathan. MARY E. HASTE WINDSOR - Mary Earl Haste, 95, a native of Bertie County, died November 12, 2005 at Three Rivers Nursing Home. Mary was born in Bertie County on November 22, 1909 to the late John H. and Olive Thompson Haste. She was a member of Cashie Baptist Church and the WMU. She was also a bookkeeper with the Richard Cooper Agency. A graveside service was conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in Edgewood Cemetery by the Rev. Dennis Connor and the Rev. Jack Byrd. DAVIS WINDSOR - James Thomas Davis, 81, a native of Bertie County, died November 12, 2005 at Bertie Memorial Hospital. Mr. Davis was born in Bertie County on April 13, 1924 to the late Aubrey Gilbert and Bessie Holloman Davis Sr. A graveside service was conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in Edgewood Cemetery by the Rev. LEROY PERRY AHOSKIE - Leroy Perry, 57, a native Bertie County, died November 12, 2005 at his residence. He was born on February 16, 1948 to the late Samuel Lee and Rebecca Moody Perry in Bertie County, NC. He was a retired farmer. A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Nathaniel Thompson. Cremation will follow services. MARILYN T. BATEMAN AYDEN - Marilyn Todd Bateman, 54, of the 200 block of 5th St., died Nov 13, 2005. Mrs. Bateman was born in Bertie County on June 2, 1951. She was predeceased by her father, Garvin Todd. Mrs. Bateman was a purchasing manager for Hardware Supply of America and a member of Peoples Baptist Church in Greenville, NC. She is survived by her mother, Audrey Hoggard Todd of Colerain; three sons, Timothy Bateman of Suffolk, Matthew Bateman of Winterville, NC and Stephen of Griffin, NC; three brothers, Greg Todd of Tarboro, NC, Jeff Todd of Southport, NC and Keith Todd of Winston Salem, NC; six grandchildren; and her longtime special friend, Paul Bateman. A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. today at People Baptist Church, Greenville, NC, with Pastor Max Barton and Pastor David Baker officiating. McGlohon, 93, a native of Bertie County, died November 15, 2005 at Guardian Care Nursing Home, Ahoskie. He was born on January 1, 1912 in Bertie County, NC to the late Willie and Mary Mitchell McGlohon. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. JOHN R. COOPER BRONX, NY - John R. Cooper, 71, of the 700 block of Riverside Drive, died Thursday, November 17, 2005. A funeral will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. in St. Luke Baptist Church in Windsor, NC. A wake was held Tuesday evening at Gilliam Funeral Home Chapel located at 706 Ghent Street in Windsor. FARMER AULANDER - Shirley Smith Farmer, 62, of Bruce Farm Road, died Saturday, November 19, 2005, at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Mrs. Farmer was born in Bertie County, a daughter of Bessie Ward Smith of Cofield and the late Cecil Lynn Smith. She was a member of the Carpenter's Shop Church, Ahoskie, The Red Hat Society and was a teller at Wachovia Bank & Trust in Ahoskie. Besides her mother, she is survived by her husband, C. H. She was the widow of John Thomas Hoggard Sr. She was born in Bertie County on May 18, 1924 to the late James Lawrence and Elizabeth Pollard Tripp and was predeceased by her husband, John Thomas Hoggard Sr. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. at Ross Baptist Church by the Rev. NEWTON CHESAPEAKE - Nonie Watford Newton, 97, of the 4700 block of Elizabeth Harbour Drive, died November 23, 2005 in her home. Born in Bertie County, North Carolina, she was a member, Church Mother, usher and Sunday School Treasurer for many years and member of the Pastor's Aid Club at Union Missionary Baptist Church, Suffolk. She was the widow of Eddie C. Newton Sr. She is survived by four daughters, Annie Mae Maddrey of Carrsville, Va., Elizabeth Newton of Portsmouth, Dasiel Thompson and Shirley Wilson (Woodrow), all of Chesapeake; four sons, Leroy Newton of California W.D. Newton (Shirley), Fred Lee Newton and Marvin Newton (Vanessa) all of Chesapeake; 22 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; 20 great-great-grandchildren; and other relatives, in-laws, and friends. JERNIGAN SUFFOLK - Walter Daniel Jernigan, 106, of the 1700 block of Holland Drive, died November 24, 2005, at Nansemond Pointe Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center. Born September 12, 1899, in Bertie County, NC., he came to Suffolk in 1948. He was the son of the late David and Ada Jernigan. Mr. Jernigan was a U.S. Army World War II veteran. A retired barber of many years in Norfolk, Franklin and Suffolk, he was the oldest member of Bethlehem Christian Church. He was predeceased by his siblings, Wright Jernigan, Jay Lester Jernigan, Bud Ed Jernigan, Evie Cherry and Ruth Warren, all of North Carolina. He was also predeceased by his former wife, Virgie Kissell Jernigan and his daughter, Janice Hodges, formerly of Richmond, VA. He will be sadly missed by his loving wife of 43 years, Ila Boyce Jernigan of Suffolk; daughters and sons-in-law, Gladys and Harold Becker of Eaton Rapids, Mich and Mary Agnes and Robert Byrd of Suffolk. ISABELLE COOPER Mrs. Isabelle Brett Perry Cooper, age 77 of North Little Rock, and formerly of Windsor, North Carolina died peacefully in her home surrounded by her family on Monday, November 28, 2005. She went to be with the Lord joining her husband Turner Bond Cooper Jr. and son Turner Cooper III She is survived by two daughters, Mary Moore and Husband Jim of Huntsville, Alabama, Monta Walker and husband David of Little Rock, Arkansas, six grandchildren, Sarah Todd, Matthew and Turner Moore, E.P., Catie and Libby Cooper and one great-grandchild, Isabelle Todd. Isabelle was a 50 year member of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, a member of the Colonial Dames and once active with the Centers for Youth and Family, and the Arkansas Arts Center. THOMAS ODER WINDSOR - Thomas Francis Oder, 81, a native of Bertie County, died November 29, 2005 in Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville. He was born in Bertie County on July 17, 1924 to the late Thomas Frank and Sophia Pearce Oder and was predeceased by his first wife, Essie Griffin Oder in 1984. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Lawrence Baptist Church by the Rev. J. N. Baggett, the Rev. Wint Hale and the Rev. Jack Byrd. Burial will be in Edgewood Cemetery. GEORGIA WILLIAMS LEWISTON - Georgia Thompson Williams, 90, a native of Lewiston, NC died November 30, 2005 at Brian Center, Windsor. She was born on February 7, 1915 in Bertie County. She was a member of Weeping Mary Baptist Church of Lewiston. A funeral will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, December 4, 2005 at Weeping Mary Baptist Church by the Rev. Johnnie Cofield.
