WILLIAMS LEWISTON - Hamp McCoy Williams died Sept. 26, 2003. A funeral will be held today at 1 p.m. at Springhill Baptist Church, Lewiston. Reynolds Funeral Home is in charge. JANNETT SKINNER ASKEW VIRGINIA BEACH - Jannett Skinner Askew of the 5400 block of Scholarship Drive was born October 1, 1921 in Windsor, NC, Bertie County and departed this life on the afternoon of her birthday, October 1, 2003. She was the daughter of the late Mills Sandberry Skinner and Fannie Skinner. Jannett received her formal education in Bertie public schools. On May 24, 1941, Jannett was united in Holy Matrimony to the late William Askew. God blessed this union with two children. Norfolk public schools employed Jannett where she worked for several years. She leaves to cherish her memory a son, William Askew Jr. of Norfolk; a daughter, Jannette Ferguson of Virginia Beach; a daughter-in-law, Barbara Askew; seven grandchildren, Chriscela Hicks, Larry Hargrove Jr., Jonathan Woods, DeJon Askew, Torriano Askew and Janeen Askew; 15 great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild. Jannett also leaves three brothers, John Skinner and William Skinner of Portsmouth and Joseph Skinner of Norfolk; three sisters, Fannie Brown of Suitland, Md, Barbara Partee of Alexandria, Va and Ethel Horton of Bowie, Md' two sister-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Her siblings who predeceased her are Marie Wright, Charlie Skinner, Mills Skinner Jr. and Lewis Skinner. A funeral will be held Monday at noon in Second Calvary Baptist Church by the Rev. Geoffrey Guns with burial in Roosevelt Memorial Park. Graves Funeral Home is in charge. AL R. WIGGINS KELFORD - Al Revelle Wiggins, 34, a native of Hertford County, died October 3, 2001. A funeral will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, November 2, 2003 at Mill Branch Baptist Church by the Rev. Ronald Dolberry. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wilder's Funeral Home, Aulander is in charge. Wiggins graduated from Ahoskie High School in 1988 and was a member of Mill Branch Baptist Church. Survivors include a son, Da'Monta A. Wiggins of Lewiston, his mother and stepfather, Mary and Willie Johnson of Kelford; a brother, Tim Wiggins of Raleigh,; a sister, Michelle Wiggins of Kelford; his grandmother, Janie Hardy of Kelford; four stepsisters, Karen Johnson of Kelford, Mary Johnson, Venessa Teal and Julius Teal, all of New Yorkk; and two stepbrothers, Willie Johnson Jr. of Colerain and Cornell Parker of New York. Robert E Perry Sr. WINDSOR - Robert "Bob" E. Perry Sr., 80, died October 4, 2003, at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville. A graveside service was conducted Sunday at Capehart's Baptist Church with Tim Parker. Perry was a self-employed farmer, a veteran of WWII, a member of Capehart Baptist Church and the VFW. Survivors include his wife, Hallie Perry; a son, Robert E. Perry Jr. of Merry Hill; two daughters, Pam Miller of Windsor and Julia McEachern of Wilmington; two sisters, Dannie McClenney of Merry Hill and Thelma Forehand of Colerain; and six grandchildren. Lew F. Lassiter WINDSOR - Lew Ferebee Lassiter, 81, a native of Bertie County, died October 4, 2003, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center, Goldsboro. A funeral was conducted Sunday at Elm Grove Baptist Church, Colerain, by the Rev. Hugh Mizelle. Burial was in Edgewood Cemetery, Windsor. Walker Funeral Home was in charge. CLEVELAND MITCHELL NEWPORT NEWS - Cleveland Mitchell, a native of Bertie County, NC, died October 8, 2003. A funeral will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. at Conoconary Baptist Church, Aulander. Reynolds Funeral Home is in charge. WRIGHT RAYNOR NORFOLK, VA - Wright "Dick" Raynor, 80, of the 3000 block of Bapaume Ave, son of the late Judge and Lena Raynor, and predeceased by his wife Rosa e. Raynor, died October 9, 2003. A native of Windsor, NC he retired from the Naval Supply Center after 30 years of government services. He was preceded in death by his son, Wright Raynor Jr. and daughter Shirley Hagans. A service will conducted at noon Wednesday at The House of Prayer For All People. MILLER COLERAIN - Joseph Daniel Miller died Oct. 12, 2003 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital. A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. Mark Baptist Church, Colerain, by the Rev. Lloyd Gatling. PERRY COLERAIN - Letiesha Carlice Perry died Oct. 12, 2003, at Roanoke Chowan Hospital. A funeral will be at 11 a.m.. Friday in Wynns Grove Baptist Church, Colerain by the Rev. Thomas E. Lee. AULANDER - Harold McNeill Early Jr., 55, of Pine Drive, died Oct. 14, 2003. A graveside service will be held today at 4 p.m. at the Early Family Cemetery. LEWIS E. "PETE" ASKEW AHOSKIE - Lewis Edward "Pete" Askew, 68, of Highway 561 East, died Tuesday October 14, 2003, at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital. Mr Askew was born in Bertie County, the son of the late William and Mary Hughes Askew. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, 3rd Armored Division and was retired from the North Carolina Department of Corrections. He was a member of the American Legion Post 102, the Davie Masonic Lodge #39 AF and AM, was a 32nd Degree Scottish Rites Mason and a member of the Sudan Shrine Temple of Newborn. Survivors include his wife, Pamela H. Askew; two sons, Bill Askew and Gary Askew, both of Ahoskie; a step-daughter Leslie Ratskowi of Wisconsin; two brothers, Jerome "Slick" Askew of Ahoskie, Marshall Askew of Winton; and a step grandson, Michael Dillon Ratskowi of Wisconsin. A funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, October 17, 2003, at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, with the Rev. Lester Jarrett and Rev. Robert May, officiating. Burial followed in Highland Memorial Gardens. The family received friends at Garrett Funeral Home from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday. ROGERSON AULANDER - Lucy D. Rogerson, 83, of St. John-Millennium Road, died October 15, 2003. A funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. in Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie. ETHEL MAE HOGGARD Ethel Mae Hoggard, 80, of Norfolk, VA died on October 15, 2003 at Sentara Norfolk General. She was born on August 23, 1923 in Bertie County. She was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church. She is survived by two sons, Larry Hoggard of Augusta, GA and MacArthur Hoggard of Norfolk, VA; five daughters, Lillie Tarrants of Norfolk, VA, Betty Hoggard, Shelia Hoggard and Jamie Hoggard all of Patterson, NJ and Shirley Hoggard Colerain, NC; twenty-four grandchildren and a host of great grandchildren. The funeral was held at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church on Saturday, October 18, 2003. Rev. Thomas Lee officiated. The burial took place in the church cemetery. DANTICE GATLING ROXOBEL - Danitce "Dant" Gatling, 58, a native of Bertie County, died Oct. 16, 2003 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie. WILLIE T. POWELL ST JOHN - Willie Tom Powell, 81, a native of Bertie County, died Oct 18, 2003, at his residence. A funeral will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Greater Harvest Fellowship Church. Burial will be in Wilder-Cherry Family Cemetery. Wilder's Funeral Home, Aulander, is in charge. NORA S. COOPER WINDSOR - Nora S. Cooper, 85, died Oct 18, 2003. A funeral will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Cedar Landing Baptist Church. Gilliam Funeral Home is in charge. Powell was a retired mechanic from Easco Aluminum Co. Survivors include two sons, Michael Powell of Florida and Louis Stewart of Newport News, VA; three daughters, Vera Powell, Annette Powell, and Sandra Powell, all of Florida; two sisters, Blanche Powell of Kelford and Lucille Gatling of Ahoskie; several grandchildren; and great grandchildren. PEARL W. JOYNER KELFORD - Pearl White Joyner, 79, of the 100 block of South Main St., died October 18, 2003, in Pitt Memorial Hospital. She was born on July 14, 1924 in Bertie County to the late Willie J. and Ruth Cobb White and was predeceased by two husbands, Hersey Edward Pierce and Aubrey Joyner, a sister, Evelyn Casper; two brothers, James White and Cecil White. Mrs Joyner was an active member of Kelford Baptist Church and retired from Ladd Lumber Co. Survivors include two sisters, Ruth Madeline Davis of Windsor and Grace W. Parks of Hampton; a brother, Lewis Carrol White of Windsor; stepdaughter, Jen Pruden of Gloucester, Va; several nieces and nephews, three of them she loved as if they were her own children, Peggy Mizelle of Elm Grove, Betty Venters of Edenton and Miles Davis of Raleigh; and a step grandchild. A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Kelford Baptist Church by the Rev. Henry C. Broschen and the Rev. David Rimel. Burial will follow in Edgewood Cemetery, Windsor. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Walker Funeral Home, Windsor, and following the funeral at Mrs. Joyner's home. CHARLES PRESTON BURDEN "BUDDY" Charles Preston Burden, 53, of Murfreesboro, NC, died on October 23, 2003 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville, NC. He was a retired truck driver. He was a member of St. John Second Baptist Church. He leaves to cherish his memory two sisters; Alice M. Burden of District Heights, MD and Gloria J. Burden of Aulander, NC. Two brothers Clarence E. Burden and Alphonso Burden both of Aulander, NC. Two aunts Viola Soloman of Ahoskie NC and Louise Revelle of Newark, NJ. Two sisters-in-law Wyland Burden of Aulander, NC and Ruby Burden of Ahoskie, NC. His devoted caretaker niece Barbara Jean Vaughan. Three step-children Brenda Langford (John) of Murfreesboro, NC, Cheryl Williams (Cola) of Woodland, NC and Addrian Bishop (Treshia) of Hampton VA and five step grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. BRACK SESSOMS SR. CHESAPEAKE, VA - Brack G. Sessoms Sr., died October 24, 2003, at his residence. A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church Powellsville by the Rev. Lafayette Riddick. Burial will be in the Sessoms family cemetery, Powellsville. A wake will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Graves Funeral Home, Norfolk, Va. EWELL G. PEARCE HARRELLSVILLE - Ewell Gaylord Pearce, 58, died Oct 24, 2003. A funeral will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Christian Harbor Baptist Church. Massey Funeral Home, Aulander, is in charge. ALYSE H. WOMBLE PORTSMOUTH - Alyse H. Womble, 81, died October 25, 2003. Alyse was born April 16, 1922 to Adrain and Myra Myers Holloman of Bertie County, NC. In 1946 she married O. Jordan Womble, Jr. who preceded her in 1969. They had two sons, and both survive her, O.J. Womble III of Wrightsville Beach, N.C., William L. Womble of Portsmouth; a granddaughter, Sarah Womble of Portsmouth; a sister, Jean Racz and husband Andrew of Portsmouth. She retired from civil service, NAVSEADET, Naval Inactive Ship Maintenance Facility, as a financial analyst. She was involved with numerous civic and community efforts. She was a tireless volunteer worker for the March of Dimes, during the postwar period, and served as local chairman. She assisted in planning the Nannie Bland David Missionary Circles for the 35 Baptist churches in the city, and served as president. She became a member of Port Norfolk Baptist Church in 1930, and was active in BYPU, Girls Auxiliary, Summer Camps, and Senior Adult Groups. She was active in Town-N-Gown, an organization of Old Dominion University, Woman's Club of Portsmouth, a member of NARFE 1293, AARP and Portsmouth Scottish Rite Ladies. A graveside funeral will be conducted by the Rev. Terry Taylor at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 7 to 8 p.m. in Foster Funeral Home, Portsmouth. Those desiring to may make memorial donations to a charity of their choice. RUSSELL P. MOORE BERTIE - Russell Paige Moore, 88, died Oct 26, 2003. A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Cashie Baptist Church. Walker Funeral Home, Windsor, is in charge. SHARON H. BROWNE COLERAIN - Sharon Anne Horn Browne, 48, of the 200 block of Chowan Shores, died October 26, 2003. Mrs. Browne was born in Bergen County, NJ and was a Catholic. She received an A.B. degree and a master's degree in library science from East Carolina University and served as librarian at Southwestern Middle School in Bertie County for 24 years. Sharon is survived by her husband, Joseph Malcolm Brown Jr.; her mother, Elsie Bellenot Horn Moore of Richmond VA; a sister, Elaine Louise Midkiff of Mount Pelier, VA; a brother, Reymond Clement Horn of Bozeman, Mon; a stepdaughter, Johnna Rebecca Browne Chapman of Havelock, NC; a stepson, Joseph Malcolm "Sonny" Browne III of Alexandria, VA; and two stepbrothers, Michael Calvin Moore of Norfolk and David Bradley Moore of Carlsbad, CA. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie. Burial will follow in Pineview Browne Family Cemetery, Roxobel, NC. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today and will assemble at the funeral home at 10 a.m. prior to the service. Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army. DAVID OUTLAW WINDSOR - David Outlaw, died October 28, 2003, at Bertie Memorial Hospital, Windsor. A funeral will be held Monday at 1 p.m. in Indian Woods Baptist Church. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge. GLADYS B. OVERTON WINDSOR - Gladys B. Overton, 76, a native of Bertie County, died October 31, 2003, at her home. A funeral will conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in Walker Funeral Home, Windsor. Burial will be in Edgewood Cemetery. Mrs. Overton was a homemaker and a member of Siloam Baptist Church. Survivors include a daughter, Betty Dunlow of Windsor; three sons, Melvin Overton and James Overton, both of Windsor and Richard Overton of Macclesfield; two sisters, Helen Todd of Windsor and Jean Copeland of Williamston; eight grandchildren; and 10 great- grandchildren.
