PIERCE WINDSOR - Linda Harden Pierce, 56, of Windsor, NC, died Saturday October 2, 2005. Mrs. Pierce was born in Windsor on August 17, 1949 to Mrs. Bessie Cobb Pierce and the late Asa Harden. Mrs. Pierce was a homemaker and member of Windsor Assembly of God. Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, October 6, 2005 at Windsor Assembly of God with Rev. Chuck Gray and Rev. Allen Harmon officiating. She is survived by her husband Harvey Pierce of Windsor, her sons, Robert Pierce of Windsor and David Conner of Polkton, NC, her daughter Kitty Pierce of Florida, her mother Bessie Cobb Harden of Windsor, her brothers, Billy Pierce and William Harden, both of Windsor, her sister Donna Rhea of Windsor, and eight grandchildren. JEFF HARMON, JR Jeff Harmon, Jr., 64, of Portsmouth, Virginia died on October 6, 2005 in Maryview Hospital in Portsmouth. He was born on October 24, 1941 in Bertie County. He was retired from MD Nash Fench in Portsmouth. He is survived by his wife Gloria Harmon of Portsmouth, his son Daren Riddick of Portsmouth, his daughters Melvine Peele of Chesapeake, VA and Lisa Murphy of Hinesville, GA and his grandchildren Daren Brown, Jacwon Peele, and Jasmine Peele. Funeral services were held at New First Baptist Taylorville Church in Portsmouth on Tuesday, October 11, 2005 with Rev. Marcus Brown Sr. officiating. Burial followed in Meadow Brook Gardens in Suffolk, Va. Wilder's Funeral Home, Inc. of Aulander, NC was in charge of the arrangements. JAMES P. WEBB WINDSOR - James Phillip Webb, also know as Phillip Webb and as "Brother" Webb, 94, a native of Windsor, died October 6, 2005 at Bertie Memorial Hospital, Windsor. He was the widower of Mary Cofield Webb and Meta Bond Webb. Phillip was the youngest of eight, was born on May 17, 1911 in Windsor to the late Washington Webb and Sarah Ellen Webb. Phillip was the first trustee of the St. Luke Credit Union. In April 1956 he was raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason of Merry Hill Lodge #275. He worked at the Blue Ridge Shoe Company as a night security guard during the seventies. Phillip was educated in the Bertie County School system. In May 1966, he successfully completed 120 hours of coursework at Pitt Technical Institute in Greenville, NC. In 1932, Phillip married the late Mary Cofield. After her death, he married the late Meta Bond Clark in 1951. Phillip leaves to cherish his memory his children Willie Webb of Buffalo, NY, Thomas Webb, Mary Washington, Dorothy Elder and Betty Ajaye, all of Brooklyn, NY, George Webb and Myrtis Webb, both of Augusta, GA, Robert Webb of Queens, NY, William Webb of Windsor, two stepsons, Soloman Clark of Windsor and Charles Clark of New York City, thirty four grandchildren, twenty-five great-grandchildren, thirteen great-great-grandchildren, as well as nieces, nephews, cousins, his special friend Erma Harrell, and numerous friends throughout the US. Funeral services were held at Indian Woods Missionary Baptist Church in Windsor on Saturday, October 15, 2005 with Rev. Ralph White officiating. Gilliam Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. MAGGIE BONDS RASCOE Maggie Bonds Rascoe was born July 27, 1912 in Windsor, NC, the seventh child of the late Joseph and Eliza Speller Bonds. She attended public school in Bertie and Martin County. She joined St. Paul Church in the seventies to be with her niece, Eva Mae. She married Brock Rascoe who preceded her in death. A son, William Teel Rascoe also preceded her in death, aw well as her eight brothers, Dosie, James, Luther, Joe, Mack, Osbourn, Eugene, John and Reuben. She leaves to cherish her memory a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends. Funeral services were held at St. Paul Church of Christ in Williamston on Saturday, October 15, 2005 with Elder Luther Barnes officiating. Burial followed in Woodlawn Cemetery in Williamston. MIZELLE WINDSOR - Emily Ann Mizelle, 67, of Forest Lake Blvd., Daytona Beach, Fla., passed away at Ormond Memorial Hospital Oct 8, 2005. She was a native of Bertie County, born to the late John D. and Emily H. Mizelle of Windsor, Feb 1, 1938. She is survived by her sister, Grace Chambers of Florence, SC; two brothers, John J. Mizelle of Locust, NC and Winston Mizelle of Daytona Beach, Fla.; several nieces and nephews and several great-nieces and nephews. She attended Windsor High School and served for 6 ½ years in the "Old Women's Army Corps", receiving the Good Conduct Medal twice. She attended East Carolina University in Greenville, NC and the College of Albemarle in Elizabeth City. She was an x-ray technician. The family will receive friends today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Walker Funeral Home, Windsor. The funeral will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Edgewood Cemetery with military rites. Memorial gifts may be made to a charity of choice. JAMES SPELLER COLERAIN - James Bernard Speller, 67, a native of Bertie County, died October 9, 2005 at Roanoke Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie. He was born on March 26, 1938 in Bertie County. A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Cedar Landing Baptist Church, Windsor, by the Rev. Shelton Barnes. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Windsor. Survivors include his wife, Celestine Holley Speller; a daughter, Bettie Peyton of Norfolk, VA; brothers, Marshall Speller of Windsor, Henry Speller Jr of New Jersey and Lewis Speller of Brooklyn, NY; sisters, Bernice Harris and Elsie Morris, both of Windsor, Clara Roberson of Greensboro and Willie Mae Speller of Connecticut; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. GARNETTE P. WILLIFORD CHESAPEAKE - Garnette Phelps Williford, 85, of the 1300 block of Perry St. went to be with the Lord October 11, 2005, in her home. A native of Merry Hill, NC, she was the daughter of the late Raleigh Grand and Ethel Pearl Hughes Phelps and the loving wife of 62 years to the late Charlie Daniel Williford. She was a graduate of the Norfolk General School of Nursing and was a registered nurse with Dr. G. W. Simpson, retiring after 25 years of service. Garnett was a faithful member of South Norfolk Baptist Church for 56 years, where she taught Sunday School, was active in the Women's Missionary Union, Meals on Wheels and held other various offices during those years. A past worthy matron of Friendship Chapter No. 57, Order of the Eastern Star, she was also a member of the Chesapeake General Hospital Auxiliary, the Women's Club of South Norfolk and the Alumni Association of Norfolk General Hospital. Surviving are three daughters, Kay W. Bray and husband Larry and Patricia W. Bodner and husband Riley, all of Chesapeake, and Dee W. Ferris and husband Bill of Virginia Beach; four grandchildren, Missi Patterson and husband Troy, Nikki Yaba, Russell Ferris and wife Carol and Lauren Bodner; two great- grandchildren, Connor Ferris and MacKenzie Yaba; three sisters, Miriam White of Chesapeake, Audrey Riddick of Ahoskie, NC, and Annie Pearl White of Askewville, NC; and her loving and devoted caregiver, Angela Drewitt. IDA MAE WILSON PORTSMOUTH - Ida Mae Wilson, 80, of the 900 block of Suburban Parkway, died October 14, 2005. A native of Windsor, NC she was formerly employed at the Naval Air Station. She was the widow of Henry T. Wilson Sr. and a member of Third Baptist Church, Portsmouth. Survivors include four daughters, Dorothy Wilson, Cheryl Kareem (Rafee), Clara Wilson and Wanda Long (Ron); three sons, Henry Wilson Jr. (Sharon), Joseph Wilson, and Michael Wilson; a brother, Reuben Watford (Mary); eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Bessie Holland; and a host of other relatives and friends. RICKS PORTSMOUTH - Lillian Holey Ricks, 91, of Neville Street, died October 17, 2005 at Maryview Bon Secours Nursing Center, Suffolk. Mrs. Ricks was born in Colerain, NC. She was married to the late Wilbert Ricks Sr. She was a member of Noble Street Baptist Church, Portsmouth. Lillian was a member of the Deaconess Board, Missionary Board and the Cottage Prayer Band. She was born on November 1, 1914 in Windsor. She was a member of Indian Woods Baptist Church and a homemaker. She is survived by her sons Melvin Bryant of Baltimore, MD, William Bryant of Williamston, Clarence Bryant, Ernie Bryant and Bernard Bryant, all of Windsor, her daughters Delphine Walton of Elizabeth City, Pennie Bond and Alfreda Bonds of Windsor, and Patricia Bond of Williamston. Visitation will be held on Friday at Manson Mortuary from 7-8:00 p.m. ANDERSON M. PHILLIPS WINDSOR - Anderson McCoy Phillips, 63, of the 400 block of Morning Road, died Thursday, October 20, 2005. He was born January 13, 1942 in Bertie County to the late Christopher Columbus Phillips and Voidy Watson Phillips. He was the youngest of ten siblings. Five brothers preceded him in death, Bernard, Ralph, William, Stephen, and James. He attended Bertie County Schools and graduated from W.S. Etheridge School. He was retired from Sara Lee in Tarboro. He was a member of the Trustee Board at Cedar Landing Baptist Church. He was married to the former Vivian Clark. He leaves to cherish his memory two daughters Kimberlee Natuzzi of Bari, Italy and Angelia Speller of Greensboro, two sons, Anderson Bell of Aulander, and Keevin Phillips of Easthampton, NJ, three sisters, Willie Joyner of Philadelphia, PA, Voidy Pillmon of Ahoskie, Mary Swain of Chesapeake, VA, one brother John Phillips of Willingboro, NJ, five sisters-in-law, six grandchildren, one godson, his loving aunt Betty Law of Hertford, and a very dear friend and neighbor, Rebecca Speller, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. DR MARY ROSE HOLLEY Dr. Mary Rose Holley was born on June 7, 1947, to the late Ruth and Cecil Holley in Merry Hill, North Carolina. She departed this life on Thursday, October 20, 2005 at Mountainside Hospital in Montclair, NJ. Mary Holley graduated from C.S. Brown High School in Winton, NC in 1967. In her quest for further knowledge she enrolled at St. Augustine's College in Raleigh, NC where she earned her BA degree in Sociology in 1971. She continued to pursue in the field of Sociology and obtained her Master's Degree in 1973 at Fisk University. In 1978 she received her PhD with a major in Sociology and a minor in Sociology Gerontology from North Texas State University (University of North Texas), Denton, Texas. Dr. Holley was an Assistant Professor of Sociology at Montclair State College in Upper Montclair, NJ. She achieved numerous accomplishments in the educational field, Some of her major accomplishments include the following: Research Assistant at Urban Observatory of Nashville- Davidson County, Assistant Project Director for Cultural Enrichment in Nashville, TN, Project and Research Assistant at North Texas State University, Teaching Fellow for the Department of Sociology at St. Augustine College, Fulbright Visiting Professor at National University of Lesotho, Roma, South Africa, Professor at Governor's School on Environment at Stockton State College, Pomona, NJ. Dr. Holley was an active member of several professional societies: American Sociological Association, Association for Black Sociologists, Eastern Sociologist Association, Gerontological Society of American and the National Council of Negro Women (Montclair Chapter. ). Due to her compassionate heart, Mary was a constant contributor to various organizations which included the State of NJ Employees' Charitable Campaign, UNICEF, Montclair Art Museum, United Negro College Fund, United Way of Essex and the American Cancer Society. Dr. Holley was an active member of St. Paul Baptist Church of Montclair, NJ, where she attended Bible Study regularly as well as taught Sunday School. She was also part of the Youth Education Aid Council. Mary was a compassionate, giving, thoughtful and intelligent person who will be truly missed by her family, friends, colleagues and students. FREEMAN CHESAPEAKE - Emma Grace Freeman, 94, of the 600 block of Kingsborough Square, went to be with the Lord October 22, 2005. A native of Aulander, NC, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Allen and Emma Jane White Pritchard and the wife of the late Arthur Raymond Freeman. She worked many years as a salesperson with Lerners' shops and was a member of Bethel Baptist Church. She is survived by a daughter, Donna Lowery and husband Butch of Chesapeake; a son, Joseph Raymond Freeman and wife Patricia of Virginia Beach; three grandchildren, Kevin Lowery, Korie Ann Tisdale and Amber Freeman; and one great- granddaughter, Alyssa Tisdale. ANN WILSON COLERAIN - Ann Perry Wilson, 47, native of Colerain, died October 22, 2005 in Gates County. She was a member of New Holley Grove Baptist Church. She was employee of Indalex in Winton and a Leader Operator. Survivors include two sons, Daryl E. Wilson of Durham and Dameon L. Wilson of Raleigh; two brothers, David S. Perry of Durham and Daniel Perry Jr. of Colerain; three sisters, Brenda White and July Simmons, both of Chesapeake, VA and Faye Stinson of Raleigh. Russell was a member of Harrellsville United Methodist Church, where he served as Superintendent of Sunday School, Church Secretary and Treasurer. He was a salesman for W.H. Basnight & Co., Inc. Survivors include his wife, Kaye Kepley Russell; a son, Martin Jennings Russell of Harrellsville; two sisters, Linda R. Baker of Windsor and Louise R. Simpson of Cofield; and a brother Walter Robert Russell of Washington. A celebration of life service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Harrellsville United Methodist Church by the Rev. Walter G. LENTON HOLLEY ROBERSONVILLE - Lenton Holley, 80, a native of Bertie County, died October 24, 2005 at Williamston Rehabilitation Center. He was born November 3, 1924 in the community of Merry Hill, Bertie County. In the year of 1943, he entered the United States Navy, World War II as a Steward's Mate, First Class. He was discharged in 1946. Two years later, he was united in Holy Matrimony to Arcenia E. Holley, who preceded him in death on December 2, 1979. This marriage created four beautiful children. Lenton was preceded in death by one brother, Ben Holley. A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Roy Sharpe. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Windsor. Cherry's Funeral Home, Windsor, is in charge. Holley was a retired supervisor with Personality Plastic Corporation, New York, and a member of Masonic Temple Cosmopolitan Lodge #72 since 1972.. Survivors include three daughters, Joyce M. Spivey of Robersonville, Catheline Holley of Harlem, NY and Peggy S. Holley-Grubbs of Raleigh; one sister, Willie Lou Parker of Merry Hill; 21 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. IRENE W. ELLIOT WINDSOR - Irene Bazemore White Elliott, 71, was born in Windsor, NC on October 10, 1934 to the late Corpel Bazemore and Hattie Bazemore. After the death of her parents, she was reared by the late Henry White and Betty Sue White. She died on Monday, October 24, 2005 in Pitt Memorial Hospital. Irene completed her education in Bertie County, graduating from W. S. Etheridge School in 1953. After graduation she married the late Junious James Elliott, and this union was blessed with five sons. Two sons, David and Tony, preceded her in death. She was a member of Sandy Point Missionary Baptist Church in Windsor. She was affectionately called "Barene." She worked in Bertie County Schools as a nutritionist. Those left to cherish her memory are her sons, Terry Elliott of Temple Hills, MD, William Elliott and Melvin Elliott Sr., both of Windsor, her sister Clara Outlaw of Temple Hills, and five grandchildren, Melvin, Sheresa, Marcus, Shanta, and Marlin, her one great grandchild, Shakiya, her three uncles, her two aunts, and a host of other friends and relatives. Funeral services were held at Sandy Point Missionary Baptist Church in Windsor on Saturday, October 29, 2005 with Rev. Samuel Fields officiating. Burial followed in Hillcrest Cemetery in Windsor. KELLOUGH CHESAPEAKE - Ola White Johnson Kellough, 87, formerly of Norfolk, passed away October 25, 2005 at her residence in Lafayette, Tennessee. Born in Bertie County, North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Woody S. and Eva Mae Matthews White. She was married to the late Rev. James E. Johnson Sr. and was later married to the late William L. Kellough. She was also predeceased by two sons, James E. Johnson Jr. and Will Rogers Johnson; and a daughter, Ellen D. Lohr; as well as three sisters (Audrey, Nettie and Elsie) and two brothers (Foy and Ernest). She was a retired dietitian retired from the Virginia School Board with 16 years of service. SLADE JR COLERAIN- Virgon Thomas Slade Jr., 62, a native of Bertie County, died October 27, 2005 at Bertie Memorial Hospital, Windsor. A funeral was conducted Monday in Ashland Missionary Baptist Church, Merry Hill, by the Rev. Willie J. Best Jr. Burial was in the Slade family cemetery, Colerain. Survivors include his wife, Mary Sutton Slade of the home; his father, Virgon Thomas Slade Sr.; sons, David Earl Slade and Marvin Kenneth Slade, both of Colerain, Tyrone Slade of Raleigh and Milton Slade of Windsor; daughters, Patricia Gale Slade of Newport News, VA, and Brenda Gilliam of Durham; a brother, Alexander Slade of Norfolk; sisters, Bessie Mae White of Merry Hill, Florence Swain and Catherine Rankins, both of Colerain, and Marie Rankins of Ahoskie; and 12 grandchildren. NANCY T. RICE RALEIGH - Nancy Tadlock Rice, 97, formerly of Ahoskie, died peacefully at Rex Rehabilitation and Nursing Care Center, Raleigh, October 27, 2005. A native of Bertie County, Mrs. Rice was the daughter of the late Lewis B. and Willie R. Tadlock formerly of Windsor, NC She was a graduate of East Carolina Teachers College with a degree in elementary education. She taught school for 33 years and was one of the first teachers to introduce special remedial reading for North Carolina State Schools. Nancy lived in Ahoskie for more that 60 years and was an active member of Ahoskie United Methodist Church. She was a former member of the Junior Women's Club and was a charter member of the Thursday Book Club. She is survived by her loving husband of 69 years, Lester Burney Rice of Rex Rehabilitation and Nursing Care Center, Raleigh; one daughter, Patsy R. Overton and husband Charles of Raleigh; two grandchildren, Margaret O. Spears and husband Raymond of Benson and Kathryn O. Wright and husband Bob of Garner; three great-grandchildren, Amanda Spears, Bradley Wright, and Blair Wright. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Garrett Funeral Home, 205 NC Highway 42 West, Ahoskie, with the Rev. John Dutton officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Gardens, Highway 13 South, Ahoskie. The family will receive friends for 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday prior to the service. She was born in Bertie County on April 2, 1930 to the late Willie and Mary Perry. She attended Bertie County Schools and joined Wynn's Grove Baptist Church at an early age. She was a devoted wife and mother and she loved to cook. She was married to the late Frank Bond of Windsor. She leaves to cherish her memories her children Dorothy White of Greenville, Francis Perry of Middletown, CT, Hazel Perry of Colerain, Annie Perry, and Evangeline Outlaw, all of Windsor, her sisters Agnes Moody, Zelda Dempsey, and Gracie Leary, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her son Floyd Perry, her sisters, Essie Perry, Elizabeth Perry, Edna Chamblee and a brother, Melvin Raynor. GEORGE DEMERY NEW BERN - George Washington Demery "Duke", 66, a native of Bertie County, died October 28, 2005 at Craven Regional Medical Center, New Bern. He was born on July 8, 1939 in Bertie County NC. Demery was a retired farmer. He is survived by a brother, Clyde Demery of New Bern, NC; special nephew Ricky Cooper of Ahoskie, NC and Special niece in law, Yolanghi Cooper of Ahoskie, NC; a host of other relatives and friends. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Hunter's Funeral Home Chapel, Ahoskie by Rev. Larry Cooper. Cremation will follow the services. KATHRYN B. PERRY MERRY HILL - Kathryn Britt Perry, 52, of the 100 block of NC 45 South, died October 30, 2005 in the Skilled Nursing Facility of Chowan Hospital in Edenton. Kathy was born in Merry Hill and was the daughter of Irene Britt Perry of the home and the late George Frank Perry. She was a member of Capehart's Baptist Church. Surviving other than her mother are two sisters, Sue Perry Holland and husband Stuart and Amelia Perry Moore and husband Ron, all of Virginia Beach; a brother, Robert Frank Perry and wife Jane of Merry Hill; four nieces, Michelle Roberson and husband Ray, Kim Jordan and husband Joey, Susan Reed and husband Robert and Britt Thompson and husband Matt; three nephews, David Holland and wife Mary, Chris Moore and wife Kristyn and Ross Moore and wife Emily; 10 great-nieces, four great-nephews, and a host of extended family and special friends. A celebration of Kathy's life will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Capehart's Baptist Church by the Rev. Bruce Dayton. THELMA HURDLE AULANDER - Thelma Jones Hurdle, age 83, died October 31, 2005 at the Ahoskie House in Ahoskie, NC. Ms. Hurdle was born October 3, 1922, daughter of the late Solomon and Betty Sharpe Parker Jones. She is preceded in death by her husband, Thurman A. Hurdle. She was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church, a homemaker, and a native of Bertie County. Survivors include three sons, Thomas E. Burch of Rocky Mount; Jerry K. Mr. Weeks was born in Windsor, NC, to the late Lally Harrison and Willam Gary Weeks. He worked as a machinist for the Norfolk Naval Shipyard and was an avid fisherman.
