Phelps is Penelope Edward Watson (Bird/Byrd) Phelps (1857-1908), wife of Miles Thomas Phelps (1855-1915), both of Bertie, NC. Her death is also noted in the church records of Bertie County Holly Grove Baptist Church Membership Records 1893, 1901/1902, as “Edward W. Phelps died aprl 27 1908” in "List of Sisters Names at Holly Grove Oct 1893," Transcribed by Lynn C. McCarthy Call No: 133- 01-3 Microfilm entitled Holly Grove Baptist Church Minutes 1822 - 1910 (2 vols.) - Duke University Library, Durham, NC. Both Edward and her husband Miles were longtime members at Holly Grove Baptist. Mrs. M. T. Phelps' nicknames include Edner and Edy. Her surname is spelled Bird in earlier records, especially census records, and increasingly as Byrd in later records, i.e., on her marriage, and on her childrens' vital records. She was the daughter of Henry Bird (c. 1819-Bef. 03 Sep 1870) and Caroline (Miller) (Castellaw/Castellow) Bird (c. 1820-Aft. 03 Sep 1870), both of Bertie. Miles Thomas Phelps was the son Reuben L. Phelps (1817-Aft. 01 Sep 1870) and Harriett (Bowen) Phelps (1813-Aft. 10 Jun 1880), both also of Bertie.
