Beverly was born February 27, 2001 to his surviving parents mother, Latoya Harrell and father Curtis Beverly both of Ahoskie, NC. DAVID ROCHA FLORES AULANDER - Mr. David Rocha Flores, age 66, of St. John Millenium Road, Aulander, died Friday, September 3, 2004 at his residence. Mr. Flores was born July 2, 1938 in San Antonio, TX. He was retired from the United States Coast Guard and employed with Eastern Fuel Corporation as a truck driver. Survivors include his wife, Pauline Jarvis Flores; his children, David R. Flores, Domingo Flores, Theresa Garcia and Anna Estrada, all of San Antonio, TX; his brother Daniel Flores of San Antonio, TX and a sister, Santos Luevano, also of San Antonio. Several grandchildren also survive him. Graveside services were held Monday, September 6, 2004 at Aulander Cemetery with Rev. Leland Clark officiating. HARRISON AULANDER - Lossie Bell Harrison, 81, of Aulander died September 4, 2004 at her residence. Harrison was born on January 25, 1921 in Tarboro Edgecombe county. Survivors include five daughters; Wanda Holloman of Aulander, Paula Munn of Waldorf, MC, Alice Burton of Capital Heights, MD, Carolyn Jackson of Washington, DC and Elouise Hutnell of Temple Hills, MD; three sons, Melvin Cobb of Clinton, MD and Andrew Harrison and Edward P. He was employed by Coastal Agrobusiness and was a member of Ross Baptist Church. He was a member of the Askewville Fire Department and a former member of the Bertie County Rescue Squad. Survivors include his father, Merle Hoggard; mother Thelma S. Hoggard; two sisters, Joy Hoggard and Deborah H. Dunlow; and four brothers, Donald Hoggard, Darrell Hoggard, Glen Hoggard and Gary Hoggard, all of Windsor. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Ross Baptist Church with Rev. ODIS HOGGARD Odis Willard Hoggard, 69, of 123 Vance Drive died Friday 10 Sept, 2004, at Duke University Medical Center. A native of Bertie County, he was the son of the late Wayland W. and Mildred Williford Hoggard. He graduated from West Bertie High School and was retired from Bell- Howell Copany. He served 24 years in the United States Air Force and was a Vietnam veteran. A graveside service with full military honors will be held Monday at 3 p.m. at Pikeville Cemetery. The Rev. Jerry Mitchell will officiate. Mr. Hoggard is survived by his wife Shirley Simpson Hoggard; three sons, Lawrence Hoggard, Gary Hoggard and wife Amber, and Warren Hoggard, all of Goldsboro; three sisters, Ophelia Campbell and husband Wilbur, of Washington, NC. Rosa Lee Baisey and husband, David of Roxobel, NC and Evelyn Humerickhouse of Rocky Mount; and two grandsons, Brandon and Wayland Hoggard. He also was employed as an electronic technician teacher at Norfolk State University for 20 years. He was a member of Doric Lodge No 98 Order of masons and the Olympian Sports Club, Portsmouth. Survivors include two daughters, Cynthia Cox (Roy) White of Portsmouth and Cheryl C. Bean of Washington, DC; a son, Larry Ward Cox of California; a sister, Verna Mae Diggs of Pennsylvania; brother E. ELIE LEE NORFOLK - Elie Lee, 62, known to all as "Chickenman" of the 900 block of Ingleside Road, passed September 12, 2004, in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. He was born Jan 30 1942, in Colerain, NC. Elie retired as a longshoreman for ILA Local 1248 and 1458 after 30 years of service. He was a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church, Colerain, NC, and also a member of St. Paul Lodge No. 71. he graduated from Charles G. White High School, Class of 1960, and was also a 2001 graduate of Virginia Union School of Technology. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, the Rev. Hazel Mebane Lee of Norfolk; two sons, Elie Carlton Lee and Donnie Scott Lee, both of Norfolk; his mother and stepfather, Alice and James Leary of Colerain; his father and stepmother, Daniel and Mae Perry, both of Colerain; six sisters, Loretta Perry of Colerain, Thelma Perry of Merry Hill, NC, Annette Beale (Roy), the Rev. LENDORA SMALLWOOD RYAN On Saturday, September 18, 2004, Lendora Smallwood Ryan departed her life at Three Rivers Rest Home. Lendora Ryan, daughter of the late Estella Walker Lathan and Lewis Smallwood, was born on June 12, 1932 On May 20, 1955 she was united in marriage to Weldon Ryan. She later joined the Tabernacle Pillar of Fire in Windsor. She had one son, Alton, who preceded her in death. BARBARA COBB FREEMAN Barbara Cobb Freeman, 74, of Windsor, NC died Monday, September 20, 2004. she was born in Bertie County on November 24, 1929 to the late Mr. Willie Cobb and Gracie Jernigan Cobb. She was predeceased by her husband Oscar Layton Freeman. Mrs. Freeman was a homemaker and member of Askewville Baptist Church. She is survived by her sons Butch Freeman of Winton, NC, Jeff Freeman of Edenton, NC, and David Freeman of Colerain, NC and her daughter Debbie Stevenson of Homossasa Springs, FL, eleven grandchildren, and eighteen great-grandchildren. MARGIE HARRIS ROXOBEL - Margie Harris, 74, a native of North Hampton county, died Sept 20, 2004 at Roanoke-Chowan Hosptial, Ahoskie. SPELLER PORTSMOUTH - Curtis M. Speller, 70, of the 100 block of Allard Road, passed away Sept 21, 2004. Curtis was born Nov 26, 1933, in Windsor, NC. He retired after 30 years of service as a supply clerk for the Naval Supply Center. He was a member of Antioch Baptist Church where he served as a former usher and former president of the male choir. LEORA CLARK Leora Clark, daughter of the late Early and Annie Cherry, was born on March 24, 1940 in Lewiston, NC. She departed this life on Wednesday, September 22, 2004 in Stratford, Connecticut. At the time of her demise, she was a faithful member of the Church of God For All People in Windsor, North Carolina for the past ten years, where The Reverand Joseph Watson serves as her pastor. Prior to joining Church of God For All People, she was a faithful member of Turner's Faith Temple, Church of God in Christ, Int'l, where Bishop J. C. White is pastor. During Mother Clark's membership of TFT she served on the Temple Choir and the Mother's Board. Mrs. Sawyer, a native of Colerain, NC, was the widow of James Shirley Sawyer. She was a member of Holy Angels Catholic Church and was active in its Sewing Club for many years. Survivors include two nieces, Triva Stanton and Marsha Wilks, both of Virginia Beach; a nephew, G. Jessel Curry of Danville; and great nieces and nephews, Michael Stanton, Patrick Stanton, Robert Stanton, Brian Stanton, Angel Stanton, Damon Wilkins, Steven Wilkins, Jessel "Bud" Curry, Lynn Hanson and Christy Curry Laing. She was predeceased by her sister, Stella Zollman. A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday in Holy Angels Catholic Church by the Rev. Romeo Jazmin. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Foster Funeral Home, Portsmouth, is handling arrangements. ARBA SHERWOOD GODWIN SR ROANOKE RAPIDS - Arba Sherwood Godwin, 78, of 111 Wicker Court, Apartment 21, Roanoke Rapids, died Wednesday, September 29, 2004 at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids. Mr. Godwin was born in Bertie County, the son of the late Arba Savage Godwin and Lela Jones Godwin. He was preceded in death by a son, Tony Godwin. He was retired Master Trooper with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. He is survived by a daughter, Lindsey Godwin of Goldsboro; three sons, Woody Godwin and his wife, Beth of Roanoke Rapids, Evans Godwin of Roanoke Rapids, and Kim Godwin of Chapel Hill; a daughter-in-law, Jenni Godwin of Roanoke Rapids; two sisters, Mary Ann Umphlett and her husband Tommy of Ahoskie and Kathryn Taylor and her husband Jack of Charlotte; and five grandchildren, Hunter Godwin of Roanoke Rapids, Megan Godwin and Kelly Godwin of West End, and Leslie Cahoon of Roanoke Rapids and Chris Cahoon of Hopewell, VA. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, October 1, at Highland Memorial Gardens in Ahoskie, with minister Randy Martin officiating. BARBARA FREEMAN WINDSOR - Barbara Cobb Freeman, 74, a native of Bertie County, died September 30, 2004. She was the widow of Oscar Laten Freeman. A graveside service was conducted Thursday (Sep 23, 2004) at the Cobb Family Cemetery by the Rev. Frank Stansberry. Memorial gifts may be made to the Bertie County Rescue Squad or Askewville Volunteer Fire Department. Mrs. Freeman was a homemaker and a member of Askewville Baptist church. Survivors include three sons, Butch Freeman of Winton, Jeff Freeman of Edenton and David Freeman of Colerain; one daughter, Debbie Stevenson of Homosassa Springs, FL; 12 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
