HARRELL RICH SQUARE - Mr. Arthur Edward Harrell, age 79, of Hwy 305, Rich Square, NC, died Sept 1, 2005 at his home. Mr. Harrell was born May 13, 1926 in Bertie County, NC, the son of the late Arthur Harrell and Beulah Parker Harrell. He worked for many years at Freeman Metal in Ahoskie, NC, and had worked in the saw mill. Survivors include his wife, Hazel Davis Harrell; his daughter, Marian H. Miles of Rich Square, NC; his grandchildren, Melissa Abrams and Mitchell Vann, also of Rich Square, NC; four great-grandchildren, Justin Michael, Stephanie and Caitlin; three sisters, Leila Edmonds, Margaret Davis, and Mildred White. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews, Betty, Ralph, Richard and Wayne. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Sept 3, 2005 at 2 p.m. at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC with the Rev. Adam King officiating. Burial will follow at Cedarlawn Cemetery in Rich Square, NC. JOYCE A CHAPMAN AHOSKIE - Joyce Ann Chapman, 55, a native of Bertie County, died September 4, 2005 at her residence. She was born December 28, 1949 in Bertie County. She was a homemaker. She is survived by her daughters Judith Perry of Harrellsville, NC, Latessha Chapman and Cassandra Outlaw, both of Windsor, her sons Stevie Chapman of Middletown, CT, Keavie Chapman of Windsor, Jerry Chapman of Powellsville, and Terry Chapman of Colerain, her sister Gloria Rankins of Boston, MA, and her brothers, Bobby Collins of Murfreesboro, Johnnie Morris of Colerain, Eddie Morris of Rich Square, Danny Morris of Boston, and Dennis Morris of Ahoskie. A funeral was conducted Wednesday at True Way Holiness COGIC, Windsor, by the Rev. Clarence Freeman. Burial was in the Morris family cemetery, Colerain. Wilder's Funeral Home, Inc, Aulander, was in charge. ROBERT H. RAWLS WINDSOR - Robert "Harold" Rawls, age 77, of Windsor, died Monday, September 5, 2005 at Pitt Memorial Hospital. Harold was born October 14, 1927 to the late Arthur and Sophia Mizelle Rawls. He was a veteran of Korea in the U.S. Army. He owned and operated Rawls Barber Shop in Rich Square where he cut hair for the past 35 years. Survivors include his wife, Faye Dickens Rawls; four sons, Harold Keith Rawls of Williamston, NC, Michael Glenn Rawls of Greenville, NC, Mark Stephen Rawls of Windsor, NC and David Bruce Rawls of Williamston, NC; five sisters, Irene Jenkins and Shirley Meeker, both of Portsmouth, VA, Jane Cullipher of Norfolk, VA, Betty Lyon of Powellsville, NC and Evy Hughes of Colerain, NC; a brother, Ralph Rawls of Aulander, NC; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. RICHARD ASKEW WINDSOR - Richard Askew, 89, a native of Bertie County, died September 5, 2005 at Bertie Memorial Hospital. He was born on September 27, 1916. He was retired from Weyerhauser Lumber Company in Lewiston, NC. He was a deacon at Woodsville Plains Missionary Baptist Church. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Woodville Plains Missionary Baptist Church, Lewiston, by the Rev. Robert Walton Sr. Burial will be in the Veale family cemetery. ALEXANDER BRIDGETT WINDSOR - Alexander Bridgett, 76, died Sept. 5, 2005. He was better known as "Munge or "Boss Man", and was the son of Ranson and Elenor Bridgett. He attended and graduated from W.S. Etheridge School in Windsor, NC. After graduation he entered the Army and served his country during World War II. After the war, he married Sadie Wilkins, and from this union four children were born. Dwight Bridgett of Hampton, VA; Beverly Silver of Trenton, NJ; Vernon Bridgett of Lewiston, and Lisa Bridgett of Windsor. Alex enjoyed music and talking with people. He earned his living as a professional painter. In addition to his children, surviving him are a sister, Thelma Hendricks of East Orange, NJ, eight grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren. WHITEHURST LEWISTON - Rosa Mae Whitehurst, 74, of the 200 block of Veale Field Road and a Windsor native, died Sept. 6, 2005. She was born on May 27, 1931 in the town of Windsor. She attended and graduated from Windsor High School. She took Jesus as her personal Savior in 1954. In her fifty-one years of service to the Lord, she pastured for 20 years. She married Ellis Whitehurst on December 181950. Their union was blessed with two children. She was preceded in death by her son Harvey and leaves behind her loving daughter Malinda Whtiehurst. ODOM PORTSMOUTH - Lena Newsome Odom, 71, passed away September 6, 2005. Mrs Odom was born in Bertie County, North Carolina, and was a longtime resident of Portsmouth. She was preceded in death by her mother, Okie Lee Newsome and her father Leslie Wood Newsome. Mrs. Odom was retired from Citizen Trust Bank/Sun Trust Bank. Survivors include her husband, Eddie Odom; a sister, Kay Leslie Smith and her husband Tom of Winter Park, Fla.; a brother, Larry W. COPELAND MERRY HILL - Daphne White Copeland, 94, of the 700 block of Blackrock Road, died Sept. 7, 2005, in Chowan Hospital. Mrs Copeland was born in Bertie County, North Carolina, and was the daughter of the late Isaac J. and Cordelia White. A homemaker, she was a member of Riverside Baptist Church. In addition to her parents and six siblings, she was preceded in death by her husband, Carlton N. Copeland. Surviving are two sons, Carl "Cotton" Copeland and wife Julia and Woody R. Copeland and wife Phyllis, all of Merry Hill; a granddaughter, Wendy Davenport; three grandsons, Carroll, Dean and Kevin Copeland; and seven great- grandchildren. WILLIAM EARL SKINNER William Earl Skinner, 75, of Huntsville, Al went to be with his Heavenly Father September 7, 2005 in a local hospital. He was born in Bertie County, son of the late Ioma Mae Overton Skinner and Levi Gray Skinner. He was the husband of Joyce Helms Skinner. He was retired with 30 years of service in the United States Army. He was a member of the American Legion where he served on the Honor Guard, he was also Past Commander of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 26 in Huntsville. Survivors besides his wife of 2 years is four sons, Jerome Key of Texas, Ronald Skinner of Geneva, AL, Donald Skinner of Huntsville and Dennis Skinner of Ardmore, AL; one daughter, Ann Jelomas of Huntsville; two brothers, J.E. Skinner of Williamston, NC, and Lonnie Skinner of Murfreesboro; one sister, Alice Faye Lassiter of Aulander, NC; 17 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren. HUGHES CHESAPEAKE - William Daniel "Dan" Hughes, 65, passed away Sept. 9, 2005 at a local hospital. Mr. Hughes was born in Colerain, NC to the late William Matthew and Josephine White Hughes. He was a retired part owner of Cedar Roads Auto Parts and a disabled veteran of the U.S. Army. He is survived by his wife, Jeannie Hampton Hughes; daughters, Dana E. Coburn, Missy G. Gill and Holly M. Gay, all of Chesapeake; a son, William Daniel Hughes Jr. of Manteo, NC; and six grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, Joseph D. Hughes. EARNEST CHERRY WINDSOR - Earnest Linwood "Little Baby" Cherry, died September 10, 2005. He was the fifth child born to the late George W. Cherry and Mary F. Bunch Cherry. A funeral was conducted Saturday at Cherry's Funeral Home Chapel, Windsor, by the Rev. Ralph White. Burial was in the Cherry Family Cemetery. Cherry was a member of Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church. He worked as a porter until retirement. JOE CHERRY COLERAIN - Joe Cherry, 47, a native of Bertie County, died September 11, 2005 at Guardian Care Nursing Home, Ahoskie. He was born on June 24, 1958. HALL AULANDER - Elvin "Peter Rabbit" Pete Hall, 63, died September 11, 2005 at the Medical College of Georgia. He was a native of Bertie County, the son of the late Claude P. and Emma Rogerson Hall, and was predeceased by a brother, Kenny Hall. He was a member of Aulander Baptist Church, an Army veteran having served three tours in Vietnam, and was 100 percent disabled. Surviving are two sisters, Claudette Harris of Hephzibah, GA., and Sandra Grange of Aulander; four brothers, Ray Hall and Danny Hall, both of Aulander, Charles Hale of Eure and Jimmy Hall of Winton. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, with the Rev. Jimmy Ward officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Gardens with military honors. RUBY BRIGHT CHESAPEAKE - Ruby Bright, 93, of the 400 block of Neck Road, went to be with the Lord on September 13, 2005, in her home. She was born in Windsor, NC to the late George and Lucinda Minix. The first born of seven girls, her siblings included: Catherine White, Queenie Swain (deceased), Ella Mae Harvey, Braddie Conyers (deceased), Calmetter Edwards (deceased) and Beatrice Minix; and one brother, Peter Minix (deceased). Ruby wed Robert Bright in 1932 and they remained married until he passed in 1990. From this union, Robert Bright Jr. (deceased) and Joe W. Bright (Etta McPherson) were born. She is also blessed with two grandchildren, Bertrille B. Lomas (William) and Joe W. Bright Jr. (Janie). She has six great-grandchildren, Bria, Brainque, Author, Joe III, Malcolm and Nicholas; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Ruby was a member and mother of Christian Home Baptist Church, Moyock, where she served on numerous auxiliaries over the years. She was the daughter of the late Johnny Bond and the late Mrs. Ada Outlaw Bond and was born on December 21, 1942 in Windsor, North Carolina. A funeral was conducted Saturday, September 17, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. at Speller's Chapel Church of Christ by the Rev. John Evans. Burial was in the Bond Family Cemetery. EVA MILLER HARRELL COLERAIN - Eva Miller Harrell, 82, a native of Bertie County, died September 14, 2005 at Guardian Care Nursing Home, Ahoskie. She was the widow of Maynard A. Harrell, Sr. Mrs. Harrell was born in Bertie County on March 3, 1923 to the late Erasmus and Mary Mizelle Miller. Mrs. Harrell was preceded in death by her husband, Maynard A. Harrell Sr and her daughter Barbara H. Copeland. A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday September 18, 2005 in Hillcrest Cemetery by the Rev. Gary Kline. AHOSKIE - Pete Hudson Bazemore Sr., 77, of the 400 block of South Pembroke Ave, died Thursday, September 15, 2005, in his home. Mr. Bazemore was born in Bertie County, the son of the late Garvey and Louise Baggett Bazemore and was a member of First Baptist Church, Ahoskie. He attended Wake Forest University and was a graduate of East Carolina University and a Navy veteran of World War II. Pete was a member of the Ahoskie Rotary Club and a past recipient of the Paul Harris Fellow Award. He was retired as a government employee with the Department of Health, Education and Welfare. FRANCES JILCOTT BENSON BATTLEBORO - Frances Jilcott Benson, 89, passed away Sunday, September 18, 2005. She was born November 11, 1915, in Bertie County, daughter of the late Paul and Julia Watson Jilcott. She graduated from Roxobel-Kelford High School and earned her baccalaureate degree from Chowan College. She married and raised a family in Edgecombe and Nash Counties. She coached women's basketball at Whitakers High School and taught school for 31 years primarily in Edgecombe County. She was a member of Battleboro United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, the Worthwhile Club, the Nash- Edgecombe Retired Teachers Association and the Nash County Senior Citizens Group. She cherished her family, her children of three generations, and her dear friends. Mrs. Benson embraced with devotion her chosen role in service to others. Special to her were her Alma Mater and her Bertie County roots. After retirement, she took great pleasure in traveling. She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas Paul Benson; one daughter; one daughter, Frances Elizabeth Benson; and her twin brother, William Joseph Jilcott. She leaves to cherish her memory two daughters, Patricia Watson Benson Brogden of Wilmington and Mary Ellen Benson of Lakewood, Colo.; one son, Thomas "Tommy" Paul Benson Jr. of Battleboro; one granddaughter, Julia Caroline Brogden Wheeler and husband Charles Wesley Wheeler of Wilmington; and gone great-grandson, Zachery Brandon Wheeler. PARKER PORTSMOUTH - Frank Edward Parker, 79, of Coltrane Drive, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, September 20, 2005, at Maryview Medical Center. Frank was born December 28, 1925, in Lewiston, NC, a son of the late Arther Peterson and Della Parker Sumner. He served in the Army during World War II, was a past member of First Baptist Church, Elm Avenue, Portsmouth, and was a driver for Camelia Dairy. Frank was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife of 59 years, Mildred H. Parker, his daughters, Laura A. Cofield and Belinda S. Avery; his sisters, Lendora Boyd, Selesta Ferrell and Sellioes Tatum; his brothers, Johnny and James Peterson; his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. TERRY AULANDER - Heidi Lynn Terry, infant daughter of Angie and Coy Terry, died at Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville on Thursday, September 29, 2005. Little Heidi lived for only five days following birth, but she has provided a lifetime of cherished memories for her family and friends. Preceding her in death is her sister, Samantha Lynn Terry. BETSY DIAL COLERAIN - Mrs. Betsy Hughes Dial, age 59, of Colerain, NC, died Friday, September 30, 2005 at Bertie Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Dial was born October 15, 1945 in Bertie County to the late Jesse Yates Hughes and Magnolia Hoggard Hughes. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Carl Gene Hughes. Survivors include her daughter, Lynnette M. Castellow and her husband, Herbert; a son, Tim Mizelle and his wife Margaret, all of Colerain, NC; a brother, the Rev. ANNIE RIDDICK MERRY HILL - Annie Francis "Goodie" Riddick, a native of Bertie County, died September 30, 2005 at Brian Center, Windsor.
