Mr. Wilson and his wife and son were at Colerain with a Sunday School and B.Y.P.U. picnic from the Courtland Baptist Church and had just finished eating their lunch in the pavilion at Colerain where the fatal accident occurred. Sykes and another life guard are quartered over the soda fountain in the pavilion, a thin partition inclosing their room. It was reported that Sykes was sitting on his cot attempting to clean the rifle when it went off, the bullet going through the partition and striking Wilson in the neck just as he had arisen from his lunch. The top vertebra in the neck was broken and the jugular vein severed by the shot. Stanley T. Holland of the local undertaking firm of W.J.M. Holland & Son answered a call from Colerain and brought the body back to Franklin, the accident having occurred at about 1:30 in the afternoon. A coroner’s jury absolved Sykes from blame after an examination of the accident. Mr. Wilson is survived by his wife, Mrs. Elsie Bradshaw Wilson; a son, Ernest Newton Wilson; a daughter, Sidney Elsie Wilson; five brothers, Perry, Gainwell, Tillman, Clifton and Herman Wilson, all of South Carolina; and four sisters, Mrs. Lelia Windham of Georgetown, S.C., and Mrs. Ada Shurlnight, Mrs. Viola Marlow and Mrs. Julia Ward, also of South Carolina. Funeral services were held this (Friday) afternoon at 3 o’clock at Mt. Carmel Church, Walters, Rev. Floyd P. Davis of the Courtland Baptist Church, pastor of the deceased, being assisted in the services by Dr. Elwood W. Jones of Franklin.
