Rhodes Clerk of the Court of the County of Bertie - NC State of North Carolina, Bertie County Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions May Term 1842. On this 11th day of May AD 1842 personally appeared before the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions aforesaid Elizabeth Jenkins, a resident of Bertie County State of North Carolina, aged 78 years in August 1841, who being first duly sworn according to law doth on her Oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by the Act of Congress passed July (4th) 1836 granting provisions to certain widows. That she is the widow of Abraham Jenkins who was a soldier in the Revolution - that the said Jenkins first enlisted in the service and served about 2 years and one half, when he returned home to Bertie County, North Carolina. In something more than two years, he was again draughted into the service and served 3 months. She has heard her husband speak of being in one general engagement, she thinks Brandywine, and a number of small affairs. He served both in South Carolina and in the North - part of the time she has heard him say he was sergeant & when he came home the last time, she thinks he was a lieutenant. His Captain in the first service was John Pugh Williams of this County and in the last was John Folk. She can not state further as to the officers under whom he served, assessing that he served under General Washington in person during the first tour, after leaving the South. She has no documentary evidence of his service but has often seen his discharge which he kept up to his death, but she does not know what has become of it. She further states that her husband was a pensioner of the United States receiving Ninety Six Dollars a year - that he rec'd his pension about three years before he died - that she does not know where the pension certificate is, but supposes it was in the hands of (Hustads?) Reynolds Esq of Windsor, N.C. who is dead, and who (was?) to draw the pension of her husband. She further declares that she was married to the said Abraham Jenkins on the 30th of January 1781, after his first service and previous to his last - that she has no record of the said marriage nor was any made - that her husband the said Abraham Jenkins died the 12th day of September 1823. That she has never married since, but still remains a widow, as will more (factly) appear by reference to the proof hereto annexed. Sworn to and subscribed in open Court on the day and year first above written. Elizabeth Jinkins X (her mark) State of North Carolina Bertie County I Jonathan Taylor Clerk of the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions of Bertie County do certify that foregoing is the declaration of Elizabeth Jenkins made in open Court for the purpose therein stated. I do further certify that the said Elizabeth is a person of reputable character and as such entitled to belief. Given under my term and the seal of my office this 11th day of May AD 1842. Jon. L.(or S?) Taylor The affidavit of Lodwick Jenkins, the affiant saith that he is the son of Abraham and Elizabeth Jenkins - he has seen repeatedly the old family bible of his father's in which the ages of his children were kept - this now is an old book and the ages were copied into another book after the death of his father and he has searched for the old Book and cannot find it, but affiant himself has a copy of his own age taken from the original which was in the hand writing of his father - he never saw any record of the marriage of his parents and thinks none was made - but this affiant was recorded to have been born on the 5th of Dec'r 1781 and was always told by his parents that was the time of his birth - and he was always told by them that they married the last day of 1780 or first of 1781 - He further saith that his father often spoke in his life time to this affiant of his being drafted for (three) months (?) going to the great Bridge after he was married to this affiant's Mother - He has often heard his father and an old man named (Folmes), long since dead, speak of their trip to that great Bridge in the State of Virginia - affiant has always resided in Bertie County but knows of no one who can testify to the service of his father (?) those whose affidavits are hereto annexed.
