I, Edward Brantley of the County of Bertie and the State of North Carolina do make and ordain this my last will and testament in manner and form as follows to wit: Item: I give and bequest unto my beloved wife Clarissa Three hundred pounds of pork, Six Barrels of Corn, one Sow and pigs, Ten pound coffee, Ten pounds Sugar, Six Gallons Molasses and all the property she possessed before I married her, Seventy five pounds Flower; Item: I give to my beloved son Augustus Brantley all my Currituck tract of land where I now live and one Negroe man Stephen. I also wish all my stock, one grey mare, all my Cattle, Hog, Sheep, Household and Kitchen Furniture, Farming Utensils, all to be sold and the Money Equally divided between my wife Clarissa and son Augustus Brantley after my just debts is paid; one third to my wife and two thirds to my son Augustus Brantley. Item: I send? to my daughter Margaret Sorrell my Winton tract of land during her life and at her death to be equally divided between her children. Item: I give to my friend Charlton Rogers Fifteen Dollars at my death. Item: I give to my step daughter Mary Cail Ten Dollars in Money at my death. I also bequeath my Body to the dust from whence it came and my soul to that God that gave it. J Wilder Cullen(X)Askew I wish Josiah Holley, Edward Hardy and William A. Rarce?(Pierce?) To be Executors to my last will and testament. State of N. Carolina Bertie County Court, May Term 1837 This last will and testament of Edward Brantley decd was proved in after court by the oath of Michael J. Wilder one of the ? witnesses ? and ordered to be recorded at the same time William N. Pierce, one of the Executors therein named qualified as such. Jos ??? (writing is illegible) Additional Comments: On May 10, 1832, Edward Brantley and Clarissa Cole (Cale)were married in Bertie County, NC. It seems that Clarissa stayed in Bertie Co as she is found on the census there in 1850: Claresy Brantly,55, living with James Cale, 16, and Harriet Cale, 10. In 1860, James Cale was living in Washington County, TX working for the Hunt family as the overseer of their plantation. James served as a Private during the Civil War with the TX 10th Infantry, losing an arm in the Atlanta Campaign. He returned to Washington Co, TX after the war and married Maggie Hardy. James died in 1888 and Maggie in 1929. They are buried in Oak Rest Cemetery near Old Gay Hill, TX.
