Maarbjerg In the name of God Amen I James Cotton of the province of North Carolina in the County of Bertie being weak in Body but thanks be to God of Sound Disposing mind and memory Calling to mind the uncertainty of this Transitory Life am willing to make my will and Dispose of my worldly .... as follows. First I bequeath my Soul to almighty god who gave it me and my body to be buried at the Discretion of my Executors after the debts and funeral Expenses are Discharged I give and bequeath as followeth. Item. I give to my Son James Cotton the plantation where I now love with all the Land and appurtinences there to belonging to him and his heirs for ever. Item. I give unto my Son Henry Cotton won Negro Child called Dinah to him and his heirs for ever. Item. I give to my Son Solomon Cotton the first Child that my Negro wench Rosa shall bring if She Should live so long be it male of female to him and his heirs for ever. Item. I give to my Daughter Christen Cotton the second Child my Negro wench Rose shall bring if she should live so long be it male or female to her and her heirs for ever. Allso won young bay mare to her and her heirs for ever. Allso won pine Chest. Item. I give to my Son Theophilos Cotton the 3rd Child my Negro wench Rose shall bring if she should live so long be it male or female to him and his heirs for ever. Item. I give to my Son James Cotton the forth Child my Negro wench Rose shall bring if She Should live so long to him and his heirs for ever. Item. I give unto my loving wife Sarah Cotton my Negro wench Rose after she shall bring these before mentioned Children that I have Layiest away to my Children if she should live so long to her and her heirs for ever. I also leave to my loving wife all the Remainder part of my Estate both without Doors and within to enable her to bring up my small Children except two young Sows and pigs .....to my Son Solomon and James and Henry Cotton. During her Widowhood and after her Day of Marriage my will and desire is that all my Estate not given in Legacies shall be equally Divided between my wife and five Children and I doe Nominate and appoint my brothers Arthur Cotton and John Cotton and my Wife Sarah Cotton Executors of this my Last Will and Testament Revoking and Disalowing of all former wills by me made in Witness hereof I have hereunto set my hand and fixt my seal. This the fortenth Day of January one Thousand Seven Hundred and fifty Eight. James Cotton Witnesses: Sam’l Cotton Jurat Thos. North Carolina Bertie County April Court 1758 The Within Written Will was Exhibited into Court by Arthur Cotton and Sarah Cotton Exec’rs thereof and Proved by the Oathes of Samuel Cotton and Thomas Riche Two of the Subscribing Witnesses thereto, And at the same time the same Exec’rs Quallifyed for that office according to Law Which was ordered to be Certified.
