BERTIE COUNTY INVENTORY - Ellis(Bryant),Catherine-1779 File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by Cathy Farris cfassir@netdex.com Will of Catherine____BRYANT/ELLIS born abt 1700-1777 This is from a book, not original. says Cathrine ELLIS 143, 144, 145 In the name of God Amen I Cathrine ELLIS of Bertie Co and State of North Carolina beingof sound mind and memory (thanks be to God) but calling to mind the mortality of mankind and know it is appointed for all men once to die do make and ordain this my last will and testament in the following manner (to wit) I give and bequeath unto my son John BRYAN his heirs and assigns forever one negro man named TONA, I also give my said son John BRYAN one yoke of draught stears and I lend my said son one fether bed and furniture during his natural lifetime and after his decease I give and bequeath to John BRYAN son of my said son John BRYAN his heirs and assigns the aforesaid fether bed and furniture. Item I give and bequeath unto my son George BRYAN and to his lawfull heirs of his one body forever and ever one negro woman named JUDETH and her futer increase and I also give my said son George BRYAN one looking glass and one linen wheale two peegers and one drawing knife. Item I give and bequeath unto my daughter Sarah GARDNER her heirs and assigns forever one negro girl named BARSHEBA and one ovel table. Item I lend to my son William BRYAN during his natural lifetime one fether bed and furniture three pewter dishes two D° basons six D° plats one chest one trunk one table four chairs two axes three hogs three sows and piggs and all my stock of cattle that is not afore given two sheep one linin wheale on woolin wheale one iron pott and hook one learge iron kittle one tea kittle. Item I give and bequeath unto my grand son William BRYAN SPIVEY (should be Wm SPIVEY BRYAN...he was step son to her dec'd son Jesse) his heirs and assigns for ever one pewter dish one D° bason three D° plats one iron kittle. Item I give and bequeath unto my grand daughter Morning BRYAN SPIVEY (should be Morning SPIVEY BRYAN, step daughter to Jesse) her heirs and assigns one iron pott and hooks one pewter dish and D° bason two d°plats. Item I give and bequeath unto my grand daughter Cathrine BRYAN daughter of my son Jesse BRYAN her heirs and assigns forever one fether bed and furniture.(this daughter was born of Jesse and Elizabeth SPIVEY-cathy) Item I given and bequeath unto my son Michael BRYAN one Shilling starling money Item I given and bequeath unto my daughter Catherine MARSH one shilling starling money. Item I give and bequeath unto my three aforesaid sons John BRYAN, George BRYAN, William BRYAN, and to my said daughter Sarah GARDNER all the remainder of my estate that is not before given in legacies and lent othem fore to be equally divided between them shair and shair alike. Item I give and bequeath unto my two grand sons Henry BRYAN and Hardy BRYAN sons of my son William BRYAN their heris and assigns forever after the death of their father William BRYAN all the house hold furniture and stock I heretofore lent him. Lastly I nominate constiture and appoint Noah HINTON, Martin GARDNER, Robert GREGORY. executors to this my last will and testament and I doe utterly revoke and disalow all other testaments wills or bequeaths heretofore by me made in witness whereof I the said Cathrine ELLIS hath hereunto set my hand and seal this twenty sixth day of December one thousand seven hundred and seventy seven. She and William are parents of Michael BRYAN. Her daughter Sarah BRYAN married Martin GARDNER. Catherine has appointed Martin to handle her affairs...this record does not lend anything new to my research, but I thought since I spent the time to obtain it, I would send it for the record...Cathy 1779 11 August " Estate Records Bertie County" "Court of Pleas" NCArchives April 2002 A Letter of Testamentary from Martin GARDNER State of No. Carolina Bertie County By order of the Worshipful Justices of the court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions of the Peace for the county of Bertie. It appearing to them that Cathrine ELLISS late of the county is dead and hath made and put her Last Will and Testament in writing and therein did appoint Noah HINTON Martin GARDNER and Robert GREGORY Execution thereof, and the said Martin GARDNER having prayed Letters Testamentary thereon the same is accordingly granted-These are therefore to impower the said Martin GARDNER to enter into and upon all and singular the good and chattles kites and credits of the said deceased and the same unto his possession take wheresoever in this state to be found and Inventory on oath return into the clerks office within ninety days from the date hereof and all the just debts of the deceased to pay so far as the Estate will extend or amount to. Given under my hand and seal at Bertie the 11th of August 1779 and in the fourth year of our Independence.
