I John Mitchell of the state of North Carolina in the county of Bertie, being sick and weak in body, but of perfect mind and memory thanks be to the almighty God; therefore calling to mind the mortality of my body and knowing it is appointed for all men once to die make and ordain this my last will and testament that is to say principally and first of all I give and recommend my soul into the hands of Almighty God that gave it and my body I recommend to the earth to be buried at the discretion of my executor Nothing doubting but at the general resurrection I shall receive again by the mighty power of God and as touching such worldly estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me in this life I give the same in the following manner and form. First my will and desire is that my new patent land and as much of the old as with the new shall make two hundred acres all which I have not given to William Barradall Wood may be sold to the highest bidder for as much as fifty dollars to be paid in ready money and what it will sell for more to be twelve months credit and all this money ariving as coming from that land to be paid away and given as followith Item I give unto my loving wife Sarah Mitchell all the ready money mention to wit fifty dollars which is to be raised by the sale of the two hundred acres of land that is left to be sold to her her heirs and assigns for ever Item I give unto my daughter Judah Thomas five pounds to be raised and levied out of the said land that is left to be sold Item I give unto my dughter Sarah Hopkins five pounds to be paid her by the money arising by the sale of the above land tht is to be sold Item My will and desire is that all the money that may arise from the sale of the land that is left to be sold except what is before given may be equally divided between my five daughters Elizabeth Tart Susanna Hollomon Penelope Hoggard Anna Harrison and Mary Mezel to them their heirs and assigns forever Item I lend unto my loving wife Sarah my plantation and land on Red Bird which I bought at publick Vandus while the said land is paid for and after it is paid for I lend the said land to George Cownd and his wife during their lives and after their deceasse I give the said land and plantation to my grandson Alsey Cowand to him his heirs and assigns forever N.B. If this land that is mentioned lent to my wife and George Cowand and his wife and given to Alsey Cowand is not paid for in twelve months from the date hereof I desire as much of it shall be sold as will pay for it and the remainder part stand fast as sbove mentioned Item I lend unto my daughter Winifred Cowand one feather bed and furniture one chest two pewter basons two pewter dishes and three pewter plates during her live and after her decease I give the same to Phebe Cowand forever.
