I Powell Harrell of the County of Bertie and State of North Carolina, being sick and weak in body, but of sound and disposing mind and memory, do this 14th day of June in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred & thirty seven, make and ordain this my last will and testament in manner and form following, viz, Item 1st - I lend to my beloved wife Harriot Harrell for and dureing her natural life my house & land whereon I live to be bounded by a line beginning at Lewis M Jiggitts & Henry Harrells corner in the lane thence down the lane & to include the Barn, then to continue the lane to a sycamore tree standing on the right side of the lane, thence a southeast course across the field to an oak thence the same course to Cashy Swamp & across the swamp to my line, then down the swamp to the falls(?), then up the main run of Cashy Swamp to Henry Harrells line, then his line to the first station. Also my negro man, Boson and his wife Lady to be by her freely enjoyed dureing the term aforesaid, and after her death to be equally divided between my four children mentioned below, but if either one or more should die before the end of said term then and in that case the aforesaid land & negroes I wish to be equally divided between the survivors & these heirs to be by them freely enjoyed forever. Item 2nd - I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Harriot Harrell to her & to her heirs & assigns forever the following negroes, viz, two negro boys, viz, Tom & Peter and two negro girls, viz, Harriot & Mariah also one third part of my household & kitchen furniture, two horses such as she may choose, and five cows & calves, five sows & pigs, ten head of sheep, also one years provision for herself and family to be furnished her out of my Estate, to her heirs and assigns forever. Item 3rd - I give and bequeath unto my daughter Ann P Harrell, my son John P Harrell children by Celia Willowby, and to my daughter, Mary P Harrell & my son Powell H Harrell, but in case of the death of either of my said children before the approval of lawful age or marriage, then and in that case the share so alotted to the one dying to be equally divided between the survivors their heirs or assigns forever, all the balance of my Estate both real and personal not before given away. Item 4th - I lastly nominate and appoint my friend and neighbor William Bishop my executor to this my last will and testament in witness whereof I have hereto set my hand and affixed my seal the day and year first above written.
