About 1815 Unknown George Washington King, son of George King and Lenora Ashford, is born. 3 January, 1816 Bladen County, NC Paragraph 5 of Street Ashford's will states the following: "I leave to the children of my daughter Lenora King and her husband George King three hundred acres of land more or less on White's Creek, also my Negro fellow Abram and I also desire that after all my lawful debts are paid with whatever funds may remain on hand I wish a young woman purchased which shall in like manor be the equal property of the children of George and Lenora King the portion intended for the children of George and Lenora King to remain with my wife Ann Ashford during her lifetime unless she chooses to sooner give it up." 10 August, 1816 Or between 1811 and 1820 based on census records. State of Georgia Street Ashford King, son of George King and Lenora Ashford, is born. Note: His census records indicate he could have been born anytime between 1811 and 1820. 3 April, 1823 Bladen County, NC Bladen County Deed Book 11, page 162 3 April 1823 - John McGill and Lenora King to John Owen for $500 - 3 negro slaves, Lucy about 27 yrs. of age, Betty age about 6 yrs. and Lucritia about 18 months old. Witness: Thomas Brown. May Term 1823. Alexander McDowell, Clerk. Note: Lenora King represents herself in this deed and that implies that George King has died. Late 1823 or Early 1824 Probably Bladen County, NC Lenora Ashford King, wife of George King, marries Aquilla Norman. It is assumed that George King has died. 16 December, 1824 Bladen County, NC Bladen County Deed Book 11, page 378 16 December, 1824 - Aquilla Norman of 1st part, Lenora, his wife of 2nd part - Jeremiah Norman of the 3rd part - whereas unhappy differences have lately arisen between Aquilla Norman and his wife Lennora, they have mutually agreed to live separate and apart from each other…and Aquilla for the separate use and maintenance of Leonnora his wife doth convey 1/3 of the proceeds of the rent of the plantation whereon the said Aquilla and Lenonnora lately resided… Witnesses: Mathew Laspyre, John Buie. McKay for $1000 - 200 acres being a moiety of two tracts of land formerly the property of Street Ashford and Ann Ashford, deceased, 1 tract conveyed by Street Ashford and Ann Ashford in their lifetime to the late James Bradley on S W side of the N W River…granted to Samuel Baker and by him conveyed to Edward Bryan on Sept. 1746…allotted to said Lenora Norman by commissioners duly appointed as her portion of the real estate of her deceased mother the late Ann Ashford. Witness: Will Cowan. 13 October, 1827 Bladen County, NC Bladen County Deed Book 8, page 172 13 October, 1827 - John McGill and Ann B. McGill in the division of the real estate of the late Ann Ashford between her 2 daughters and only heirs, Lenora Norman (then Lenora King) and Ann McGill - Lot #1 was assigned to the said Lenora and Lot #2 to said Ann…Lot #1 has been conveyed by the said Lenora and her husband Aquilla Norman to James McKay - to John McGill the husband of said Ann do hereby quitclaim to Jas. I. McKay. Witness: Will Owen. About 1830 Probably Bladen County, NC Anna D. King, daughter of George King and Lenora Ashford, marries Joseph Allen, son of William Allen and Martha Shuffel. 15 September, 1838 Estate sale of William Bryan, deceased, Bladen County, NC Washington King purchases 1 truck for 55 cents. Joseph Allen purchases 1 table for $1.15. Washington King purchases 1 saddle for $3.25. About 1841 Probably Bladen County, NC George Washington King, son of George King and Lenora Ashford, marries Amy Munce, daughter of James Munce and Sarah White. About 1842 Probably Bladen County, NC Street Ashford King, son of George King and Lenora Ashford, marries Celia Allen. 22 August, 1842 Bladen County, NC Bladen County Deed Book 9, page 431 22 August, 1842 - John Munce to James W. King son of Washington King for $100 - part of a 200 acre survey situated between the Black Swamp and Reedy Meadow joining the lands of John Willis and others……containing 82 ½ acres… Witness: N.H. Chesire, Willis Singletary. 31 August, 1844 Bladen County, NC Bladen County Deed Book 8, page 345 31 August, 1844 - Mary Norman, Sarah B. Norman, Thomas J. Norman, and Caroline E. Norman to Street Ashford King for $30 - An undivided moiety in 1 tract of land which they inherited as the heirs at law of Jeremiah Norman, deceased - beginning near the Lumberton Road…being part of 640 acre tract conveyed by D. Lewis, Sr. to J. Norman. Witness: Jas. G. Gillespie. February Term 1845. David Lewis, Clerk. 20 April, 1850 SW side of Cape Fear River in Bladen County, NC Washington King, age 35, is recorded on the 1850 census in household 128. He is a farmer with a real estate value of $200. He lists his place of birth as NC. He cannot read or write. Also listed in his household are Amy King, age 32, Jas. W. King, age 7, Sarah J. King, age 5, William D. King, age 4, and Harriet M. King, age 2. Next door neighbors of Washington King are James Munce, age 69, and Isabel Davis, age 61. 6 August, 1850 Bladen County, NC Bladen County Deed Book 31, page 542-543 6 August, 1850 - James and Sarah Munce to Washington King for $25 - two pieces of land totaling 200 acres - first piece contains 140 acres, it being part of a 200 acre survey divided between Isham Singletary and the said William White - the second piece is part of a 400 acre survey granted to John Hillard, it being the tract of land on which the Arnette land laps and I the said James Munce sell that part of said tract which is clear of the laps lying on the south side of the black swamp and in the said swamp but as much of said tract as is lying on the north side of the said swamp is excepted the original courses and distance of the said 400 acres are as follows……to the river then to the meanders of the river to Harnets upper corner……the said pieces joins each other in part joining the lands of John Willis and Mep Purdie and others lying in the aforesaid state and couty situated between the Black Swamp and Ready Meadow… Witness: Daniel Evans, A. Melvin, Clerk. 20 August, 1850 SW side of Cape Fear River in Bladen County, NC Washington King is recorded on the 1850 slave schedule as owning the following 5 slaves: A black female, age 25, a mulatto female, age 16, a black male, age 4, a black male, age 3, and a black female, age 2. 23 August, 1850 SW side of Cape Fear River in Bladen County, NC Streety King, age 30, is recorded on the 1850 census in household 158. He is a farmer with a real estate value of $100. He lists his place of birth as Georgia. Also listed in his household are Cely King, age 31, William J. King, age 7, Geo. B. King, age 6, Mary A. King, age 4, Jas. W. King, age 2, and John D. King, age 10 months. Next door neighbors of Streety King are Daniel Willis, age 43, and William Harrel, age 47. 30 August, 1850 SW side of Cape Fear River in Bladen County, NC Lenora Norman, age 59, is recorded on the 1850 census as living in household 223 with Joseph and Anna D. Allen. Joseph Allen, age 64, is a farmer with a real estate value of $1000. Also listed in his household are Anna D. Allen, age 41, Lenora Allen, age 19, Maulsey A. Allen, age 17, Joseph Allen, age 14, Ann M. Allen, age 13, Mary E. Allen, age 11, Charles W. Allen, age 9, William R. Allen, age 8, Jane K. Allen, age 5, Nathan Allen, age 1, Lenora Norman, age 59, George G. King, age 8, and Catherine King, age 5. Next door neighbors of Joseph Allen are David Singletary, age 38, and Danl. Hester, age 34. Note: George G. King and Catherine King are presumed grandchildren of Lenora Ashford King Norman. 4 September, 1850 Bladen County, NC Bladen County Deed Book 28, page 525 S.A. King to J.M. Eady for $25 - A certain lot in Etown known as the Ashford lot and adjoins the lot that the Presbyterian Church now stands upon and also joins a lot of Lewis and others… Witness: Nathan Bryan. May term 1851. J.I. McRee, Clerk. 25 January, 1851 Bladen County, NC Bladen County Deed Book 31, page 544 John Munce to Washington King for $200 - two tracts of land lying on the Black swamp and Ready Meadow swamp containing by estimation 200 acres……from William Daniel and Archibald White to the before named John Munce for the same lands now conveyed by him to the said Washington King……I do hereby reserve to my father and mother a lifetime estate in said lands as was reserved in the deed to me from the Whites and after their deaths to the said Washington King… Witness: Daniel Evans, David Lewis. Geo. F. Melvin, Clerk. 1854 or 1855 Bladen County, NC George Washington King dies. His youngest child, Amelia Ann King, was born in October, 1854. It is assumed that Washington died in 1854 or 1855. 22 September, 1860 Elizabethtown Post Office, Bladen County, NC George G. King, age 18, is recorded on the 1860 census as living in household 1074 with Edmund and Catherine Hester. Edmund Hester, age 43, is a farmer with a real estate value of $400 and a personal estate value of $311. Edmund and Catherine were married within the year. Edmund cannot read or write. Also listed in his household are Catherine Hester, age 16 domestic, and George G. King, age 18, farmer. Next door neighbors of Edmund Hester are John T. Butler, age 36, and Daniel McNance, age 55. Note: Catherine Hester is apparently Catherine King, sister to George G. King. Their parents are unidentified. They were grandchildren of George and Lenora Ashford King. 25 September, 1860 Elizabethtown Post Office, Bladen County, NC S.A. King, age 45, is recorded on the 1860 census in household 1100. He is a farmer with a real estate value of $130 and a personal estate value of $147. He lists his place of birth as Georgia. He cannot read or write. Also listed in his household are Selia King, age 42, W.S. King, male age 17 in turpentine and attending school, G.B. King, male age 16 farmer and attending school, M.A. King, female age 14 attending school, J.W. King, male age 12 attending school, J.O.D. King, male age 10 attending school, T.N. King, male age 9 attending school, Eliza King, age 7, D.D. King, male age 5, S.J. King, female age 3, and Harriet King, age 5 months. Next door neighbors of S.A. King are Alexander White, age 34, and R.S. Gillipi, age 53. 26 September, 1860 Prospect Hall Post Office, Bladen County, NC The family of Washington King is recorded on the 1860 census in household 1115. They are living with grandparents James and Sarah Munce. James Munce, age 79, is a farmer with a real estate value of $1000 and a personal estate value of $400. Also listed in his household are Sarah Munce, age 73 housewife, Amy King, age 42 domestic, J.W. King, male age 18 farmer and attending school, S.J. King, female age 17 domestic and attending school, W.D. King, male age 14 attending school, H.M. King, female age 12 attending school, J.W. King, male age 8 attending school, and P.A. King, female age 6. Washington's daughter, Loveley King, age 12 and attending school, is living in household 1042 with aunt Nancy Munce Brisson. Next door neighbors of James Munce are Bryant Cheshire, age 60, and W.O. Carroll, age 28. 28 September, 1860 Prospect Hall Post Office, Bladen County, NC Lenorah Norman, age 69, is recorded on the 1860 census as living in household 1134 with Joseph and Anna Allen. Joseph Allen, age 75, is a farmer with a real estate value of $2000 and a personal estate value of $1745. He cannot read or write. Also listed in his household are Anna Allen, age 51 domestic, M.E. Allen, female age 21 domestic, C.W. Allen, male age 19 turpentine, W.R. Allen, male age 18 farmer, J.K. Allen, female age 14, Nathan Allen, age 12, Narcissa Allen, female age 9, and Lenorah Norman, age 69. Next door neighbors of Joseph Allen are sons Joseph Allen, age 24, and Willis Allen, age 45. Note: Lenora Ashford King Norman died sometime after 1860 and prior to the recording of the 1870 census. 14 June, 1870 Elizabethtown Township, Bladen County, NC Street A. King, age 55, is recorded on the 1870 census in household 170. He is a farmer with a real estate value of $250 and a personal estate value of $150. He lists his place of birth as Georgia. Also listed in his household are Celia King, age 52 housekeeping, Eliza King, age 16 assistant, Sally King, age 14, David King, age 12 laborer, and Harriet King, age 10. Next door neighbors of Street A. King are William Hester, age 25, and A.M. McNeil, age 27. 18 August, 1870 Hollow Township, Bladen County, NC Joseph Allen's widow, Anna D. King Allen, is recorded on the 1870 census in household 53 as Anny Allen, age 62. Her occupation is keeping house. Next door neighbors of Anny Allen are her son Nathan Allen, age 21, and D__ Singletary, male age 27. 20 August, 1870 Hollow Township, Bladen County, NC Washington King's widow, Amy Munce King, is recorded on the 1870 census in household 185 as Amey King, age 53. Her occupation is keeping house. She has a real estate value of $100 and a person estate value of $100. Also listed in her household are Harriet M. King, age 21 assistant, Luvyd D. King, age 19 assistant, Parmella A. King, age 15 assistant, and John W. King, age 18 laborer. Next door neighbors of Amey King are Mary J. Evers, age 42, and her son James W. King, age 30. 4 June, 1880 Bethel Township, Bladen County, NC S.A. King, age 69, is recorded on the 1880 census in household 33. He is a farmer. He lists his birthplace as Georgia. He cannot read or write. Also listed in his household are his wife Selia King, age 62 keeping house, his daughter Eliza King, age 26, and his daughter Sallie J. King, age 22. Next door neighbors of S.A. King are Zach Lewis, black age 25, and his daughter Mary Bryan, age 38. Note: W.D. King and Ema King are neighbors to Mary Bryan. 4 June, 1880 Bethel Township, Bladen County, NC Washington King's widow, Amy Munce King, is recorded on the 1880 census in household 36 as Ema King, age 60. She is a widow and her occupation is keeping house. She cannot write. Also listed in her household are her daughter Amelia A. King, age 24, and grandson Sandy King, age 6. Next door neighbors of Ema King are her son W.D. King, age 35, and Thames Cain, age 24. 4 April, 1888 Bladen County, NC Bladen County Deed Book 15, page 142 M.D.A. Eiless of New Hanover County, NC to S.A. King of Bladen County, NC for $60 - ……beginning at the corner of the lot on which Singletarys Church is situated and runs thence with Kings line……containing 20 acres more or less; said land was conveyed by R.M. Lesesne to H.B. Eiless and deed was recorded in book AA, page 334……and the said M.D.A. Eiless covenant that she is seized of said premises… 25 December, 1898 Bladen County, NC Street Ashford King dies. He is buried in a private cemetery on land apparently owned by him. Directions to the cemetery were recorded by Nash Odom on February 12, 1968: "On SR 1106, approximately ½ mile from Bethel Church in open field, in an overgrown area, on the right from Dublin to Bethel Church." Note: I have never seen this cemetery but it is my understanding that it sits behind the former trailer home of James and Cathy Jackson on Bethel Church Road. 12 June, 1900 Bethel Township, Bladen County, NC Street King's widow Celia King, age 82, is recorded on the 1900 census in household 106. Her birthdate is given as April, 1818. She reports that she has 10 children and that 7 of them are living. She cannot write. Next door neighbors of Celia King are Marlsilah Lewis, black age 29, and her son-in-law Joseph Sessoms, age 43. Note: Celia Allen King died sometime after 1900 and prior to the recording of the 1910 census.
