Sessoms was born in White Oak, Bladen County, North Carolina in 1839. He served in the Civil War from November 4, 1861 until his capture at Fort Fisher, January 15th 1865 and was released from prision at Elmira, New York, June 12th 1865 and returned to Harrison Creek his home. He was in Company I, 2nd North Carolina Artillery, 36th NC State Troops and recieved the Roll of Honor on December 20, 1862 at the age of 21.
