Bladen County, NC - 1850 Census - Homes 278-293 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This is the 1850 US Census for Bladen County NC, Houses 278-293. These were located on the NE Side of New River. All are born in NC except where noted. All could read and write except where noted. All are white except where noted. If employment or not if mentioned in the census it is put her. The format is house #, Name, age, race, occupation, $worth, where born, married in the last year, attended school in the last year, cannot read & write and 21 yrs & over. Misc such as insane, pauper etc. I have tried to spell the names to the best of my ability as spelled in the census. I have listed the date the information was obtained according to the census. The census was a hard thing for a census taker to do. He had to go out to places that were separated by large distances. The accent of the person and there ability to read and write took it’s toll. Also the people that could read and write were not always the best spellers so a lot the census in by phonetic sound. Also there were times the census taker took the information from a neighbor when unable to obtain it from the actual house. 14th September 1850 #278 Davis, Dempsy 24M Farmer 200 Can’t read or write Margaret 24F " Maulsey J. 6F Catharine 2F Blackwell, Jesse 65M Laborer Can’t read or write #279 Cain, John 36M Farmer 200 Married in last year Isabella 25F " #280 Bordeaux, Thomas 22M Laborer Rhoda A. 20F Rebecca A. 4F Hannah 2F #281 Reeves, Phillip 48M Laborer South Carolina Jane 38F Harriet 14F Robert 12M Daniel 11M Alexander H. 9M Margaret 7F Elizabeth 4F Smith, John 16M apprentice #282 Smith, Thomas 29M Farmer 75 Harriet N. 25F Lucy C. 3F Lyod McK 2M #283 Sutton, Toliner 35M Farmer 500 Damaris 58F #284 Reeves, William 67M Farmer 1,000 Elizabeth 31F can’t read or write Daniel 4M Jordan, Catharin 25F can’t read or write #285 Reeves, Wilie 35M Farmer 500 can’t read or write Margaret 30F Reeves, Hellen F. 1F #286 McDuffie, John 58M Farmer 2,200 Catharin 46F Mary 16F John 11M Smith, John 24M Farmer Robert M. 22M Farmer Murdoc 20M Farmer David T. 17M Farmer Arthur L. 16M Farmer Henrietta 14F 14th September 150 #287 Herring, John 43M Farmer 3,000 Mary 41F Eliza A. 15F Ellen E. 13F Mary A. 11F Isabella 9F Lucy L. 6F John B. 5/12M #288 Melvin, Ann 44F 2,000 Fitzrandolph, Amastatia 18F #289 Cromartie, Patrick L. 25M Farmer 9,000 Elizabeth 54F McDuffie, Worthly 60F Devane, Richard P. 27M Cooper #290 McMillan, Elizabeth 75F 500 Daniel N. 30M Margaret E. 18F #291 Cromartie, John 76M Farmer 8,000 Ann 66F William J. 26M Farmer Ellen M. 23F #292 Cromartie, Patrick 63M Farmer 5,000 Sarah 61F Mary 40F William K. 22M Farmer Elizabeth 19F #293 Melvin, John C. 29M Cooper 1,000 Ann 37F Loise E. 1F ______________________________________________________________________ Copyright.
